We did not have 30 years of nutrition knowledge. Since the 1970's we had the same scientists funded by the same people producing the same false crap for years so we can all feel good about eating so many fucking carbs.
This is no different than the tobacco industry. Same law firms.
Guess where they are now? Plastic companies. Enjoy that BPS, it's way worse for you than BPA (allegedly).

this lecture is 1.5 hours long and at times hard to understand (may even appear to be boring) BUT.........do we not spend endless hours to see a doctor, stay in hospitals, wait for medication at the pharmacy? Do we not spend hard earned money for stuff that makes us sick (often unknowingly) and forces us to spend all those hours "getting healthy" again?
I would like everyone who reads this to motivate you to set aside this hour+half and listen/absorb deeply what this Professor of Pediatrics is trying to teach us. I know, you know and probably everyone knows that sugar is bad for us.
BUT........this lecture takes it to the next level. I am glad I "suffered" through the entire thing. I WILL NOT EVER LOOK AT FOOD THE SAME WAY. It deals with the chemistry, statistics, medical information, historical knowledge, corporate/business info, specific product details, eating habits, and references to specific populations (sports, students, small children, age groups, ethnic issues).
Don't give up, it is interesting to the very last minute. I was aware of a lot of things discussed. The one fact that shocked me most, was the information about baby formula and skyrocketing obesity numbers for 6-month old babies and eating habits during pregnancy. I hope that my little comment motivated you to listen and forward this post.

Well, you can also say that kids these days are spoiled. When I was a kid, I didn't get much candy or pop. I didn't get free lunches at school. Let's see, Oatmeal for breakfast, a peanut butter sandwich and an apple or orange for lunch, and dinner was dinner, but no desert. Desert came on birthdays only. Halloween was minimal. Christmas was minimal for treats. I guess I owe not being "fat" to my mom, who freaked out when I had 4 cavities when I was 5 or so. That was it, no more sugar. I was a bean pole then. Now, I still don't have much sweets or pop because I never really did. I like very dark chocolate, but that's as far as the sugar goes. I'm trying to make sure my kombucha is properly done too, so there isn't much sugar left. An occasional cookie passes my lips, but I control that too. Nobody is perfect I figure.

+Andrew Think Just because there is a discernible cause to obesity(intaking more energy than spent, then storing excess) doesn't mean it's not a complicated issue. Hunger, satiety, hormones, TDEE/Energy levels, education, socialization, market, accessibility are all factors that contribute to the epidemic. It is a very complicated issue that is very individualized to boot. What possesses you to think it's not a complicated issue other than being under-educated on the topic?
+Lilith Black he addresses caloric intake within first ten minutes. Shows how people eat more now which why people are obese, the reasons behind that are more likely than not social. Obesity isn't a complicated issue.
It's not natural fructose found in fruit that is the problem... sadly the term fructose has been given a bad reputation based on the "high fructose" label. Fruit juice is not sucrose.
Classic fake juices contain no true fructose from fruit. Cool aide, Hawaiian Punch, Sunny D, a and other sugary drinks are the high "fructose corn syrup" type 'food' products that are not good for us. Our brain uses 100% glucose for food. Glucose comes from sugars are eat. The best source is from fruit. Natural fruit sugar is fructose.
He says that the issue with LDL is that both A and B (good and bad) are being measured together because it is too hard to distinguish the two. But then he says that good LDL (A) has the following profile : low TAG and high HDL. How do we know that low TAG and high HDL = good LDL if it's very hard to measure?
I am not saying he is wrong I am just trying to understand the science behind it and will be grateful if someone could explain. (min 37)
Great speaker. He should go and open the next big rheumatology conference, and tell the gout specialists to get their act together. They are still pushing a diet where the most recommended foods are cereals without fibre, jam, sugary soft drinks, and sweets!
Wow powerful stuff, makes you look at food in a completely different light. Despite the complexity of the metabolic process that is discribed in the lecture, they did a great job in breaking it down and making it understandable for everyone. I will definetly take a closer look at what i buy in the stores from now on and i think one of the key messages is to make a effort to introduce more fiber to your diet. Fiber meight be the thing that makes limited fructose consumption acceptable, because i regard it as pretty much impossible to completely avoid consuming fructose, since it's in pretty much everything.
It's ridiculous to demonise sugar. We never had such high rates of obesity in the past. But, as kids, we used to go out to play. We didn't just sit on our arses, on facebook, &twitter, & instagram & snapchat & whatever the hell else banal, so called social media. Or just playing computer & console games. I am 6 feet tall & weigh just over 70 kilos. I was 60 kilos until a year or so ago. (I'm aged 55).
I NEVER drink water. It just makes your mouth like blotting paper. I drink 5-8 cups of coffee a day. Each has at least 4 heaped teaspoons of sugar in. Apart from that, I only drink sodas, all full fat. Mostly regular coke. I put sugar on all sweet things. Frosties. In premade, already sweetened custard. I also eat bags of sweets, candy in American language. I'm not overweight. The above has been my diet, all through my adult life. I don't have diabetes, or heart disease. Why should my diet have to change, because a bunch of lazy, fat kids won't get off their arses and actually do some real living. Not the virtual bullshit they are all addicted to?
don't bother to go to sweetsurprise.com... i guess the industry saw this coming and deleted the site. i tried to stop eating sugar about 2 months ago... had to settle on <8-10 gm/ day or i think i would starve. 95% of everything in the store i go to has added sugar. by the way, since i started... without changing how much i exercise, i've not only dropped 7 lbs (starting BMI at about the center of overweight), but i find i am not hungry most of the day. i now have a light breakfast and eat one more time around 4pm. btw, the mentioned book Pure, White and Deadly is online (pdf), just Google it.
15:12 presenting results of meta-analyses (yes, plural) and mentioning "statistically significant associations" - these are extremely low correlation coefficients, realistically contributing to 3-4% of the overall effect. Plus, including cross-sectional studies is not a good idea at all - you cannot conclude whether obese people tend to drink more pop or those who drink more pop tend to be obese.
PS. I'm totally pro keto, just pointing out that this kind of "science" is doing more harm than good.

Great lecture, but please stop calling everything and everyone "guy". When females have to hear everything male-genderized, we are psychologically left at disadvantage because femaleness is left out of the life question altogether. Neutrality is preferred. People think this is unimportant, but it creates consciousness, which creates the world we live in, which is a male-created hellhole at the moment. It matters. Also I do not expect to hear "God/He" referred to in a science talk. No "god" made anything.
This is not epically new, however it is science based, and I for one, have been on low carb, diet, and my blood sugars are finally in the normal range after ridding my diet of sugar, and un healthy carbs.

Um maple syrup, agave, honey, and even stevia spike your insulin. The first 3 are practically pure sugar. Just get rid of all that stuff and learn to enjoy natural whole foods like fruit. If you want something sweetened crush some grapes or a chunk of watermelon, and mix the whole thing in, fiber and all.

I am so grateful for Dr. Lustig going into the detail and depth he has here in this talk. We only have one body and I intend to take care of it, regardless of the push to consume unhealthy, adulterated foods.
Wow thanks for posting UCTV, this brings back memory of 'DIETING MAKES YOU FAT' from the 1980's written by a journalist. Politics of food marketing was all there just like this, which was about WHITE SUGAR.
Its understood you're against processed foods and high sugar diets so how do you propose we change it? Foods outside of that circle are extremely expensive and not bountiful. My grocery stores only offer 5 all natural aisles (including produce) and the other 17+ are a combination of gmo, processed, and frozen slop that sells for a dime a dozen
The point is that the whole system is corrupted to the core with all powerful corporations giving us the cheapest most profitable crap they can legally get away with so they can get suitable returns for the shareholders with no regards to the adverse effects !

That's frustrating. That someone would say that. It's just not true. People don't require milk at all. The only important thing about milk is the things we add to it like vitamins and stuff. But the milk on its own is harmful and useless. It's just sad that our society still believes to this day that milk is necessary or important. It's really not.
