I have seen people who became vegetarians who lost their teeth and / or hair. Even though they ate a very high calcium and protein diet. This is because not everyone has the genetics to go all vegetarian. Dr. Greger also mentioned that cereals can sometimes contribute to arthritis but he zipped right past it. There are also some vegetables that can contribute to arthritis. This topic is a lot more complex than presented. I gave the video a thumbs up because many people need to reduce their animal protein intake, but some people cannot completely eliminate it. Dr. Greger should be a little more cautious and not make the issue sound so simplistic.

(I feel that these studies could show that it just might not be from eating meat itself, but possibly from what these chicken and fish are being fed. You picked on beef as if it was the highest methionine culprit or something. Even by your own bar graph you can see that it isn't. Anyways, I eat beef once a week. I think it's common knowledge that beef should only be eaten about once a week. Especially if it is higher fat beef. Once a week of having beef along with eating plant based foods everyday seems that it would put beef right around the same level or even less than some plant foods for weekly intake of methionine.)
Cholesterol is necessary for the production of steroid hormones, cell membranes and brain tissue. It is produced by the liver. People with very low cholesterol levels become depressed. If oxygen were to promote growth of a certain tumour, would you suggest asphyxiation as prevention? There must be more to the story than "let's blame cholesterol". Cholesterol is supposed to be there.
Yes - cholesterol has important biological functions in the human body. And the human body produces its own supply of cholesterol to fill those needs. What Dr. Greger is saying is that there is no need to consume cholesterol in our diets, because our bodies make their own supply. There is no RDA for cholesterol. He is not saying that cholesterol has no role in the human body, so what is your concern with what he is saying?
I LOVE listening to these presentations. Dr. Greger has a phenomenal talent for speaking and presenting. I can't stop watching his videos! I'm emboldened in my decision to eat a vegan diet every time I learn something new about it. Just imagine what modern medicine could achieve with all of this preventable disease lessened! So much of healthcare is suffocated by chronic illness that it's all but paralyzed to progress...
I am Jane the only diet that's been proven to reverse atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes is a low fat whole foods plant based diet. So, how can somebody cherry pick, when there is only 1 cherry to pick? a LFWFPBD should be the standard until proven otherwise. Dr. Greger is the least biased researcher out there. Just because you personally disagree or read some industry funded studies doesn't make him biased.
Sydney Conrad it's just like smoking. Sure you can smoke a cigarette per week and you most likely won't get cancer, but there's other effects such as lung inflammation and so on, so why do it in the first place? it's not necessary for survival nor health, same with animal products. Just avoid them all. Eat a low fat whole foods plant based diet, and if you think you can only eat salads all day, then check out some vegan cooking channels, they'll change your mind in minutes and you won't doubt the diet in the first place. A plant-based diet is the healthiest, yes. A meat "based" diet can still be relatively healthy in terms of longevity if it is done properly, but there's too much to sort through to ever do it properly, I suppose.
Does whey protein supplement have the same negative effects on the colon as whole dairy? I was always under the assumption that it would be healthy because most of the fat and sugars have been removed leaving only protein but I do consume 2-3 scoops a day. I couldnt find any study correlating high whey supplement intake to higher colorectal cancer risk.
Really?? Africans' meat consumption is low? If you met only 1 African person (really from Africa not an African American!) in your life you would know that the meal that does not include meat is not counted as a meal for an African. Still they out live North Americans, in fact, anyone on the planet would outlive a North American. Why? look at what's in your meat (i.e burger, radiated, GMO soy fed, hormones and antibiotics filled) vs. almost the rest of the world's meat (i.e wild caught, grass fed, quickly slaughtered and well bled)! I don't see you mentioning the fact that most of the meat in the USA (if not all) is radiated before reaching the consumer. Your government is killing you to make some extra money! Dr Greger, my husband is 59-years-old. In April of this year he underwent open heart surgery for blocked arteries. He has also been diagnosed pre-diabetic, has diverticulosis, has lupus, has rheumatoid arthritis and hypertension. All of his doctors said diet has little or nothing to do with his diseases and that all his diseases are incurable. After studying you, Dr McDougall, Dr Barnard and Dr Esselstyn, we eliminated red meat and dairy 4 months ago. Two weeks ago we became strict vegans. My husband's angina and shortness of breath are completely gone. He threw away his methotrexate and prednisone. He goes to the gym four hours a week and has lost ten pounds so far. I doubt he will need his lisinopril a year from now. I'm positive he won't need stents down the road. Veganism is nothing short of a miracle.
Dear Dr.Greger , having the bigger picture view of things using epidemiological data is awesome but what would you advise i study to get a better idea of the pathophysiology behind diet-induced disease and the pathophysiology behind dietary interventions to cure and or prevent these diseases?
What a heroic person. One of the best and most important lectures I have ever seen. What if this talk was rotated among the top 10 television stations so that once a week it was aired on one of them, in perpetuity. I think it would have a big impact on our meat infused diet and save tens of thousands of lives, and many more animal lives. I'm gonna watch it again!

Awesome! I have been waiting to hear someone like him! I knew being a Adventist was right! Ellen G White was a prophet and had visions from God in the 1800's. He told her that meat would be unsafe in the last days. That is why she promoted meatless diets in days when no one spoke of being a vegetarian. So, Dr. Gregor was not the first person to promote a healthy, meatless diet.
What do you do if you're someone with Wilson's Disease? Those with WD are advised to eat a low copper diet. Copper is found primarily in dried beans, dried fruits, nuts, mushrooms, peas, whole wheat products, shellfish, and chocolate.
Is this all still true when on a ketogenic diet, where you're in ketosis? I've been following a ketogenic diet for a little while now to help control blood sugars (I have type 1 diabetes, unfortunately) - although it is still quite a struggle to control even when all conventional carbs are out of my diet, I do feel a lot better on it - though that might be due to improved (but by no means perfect) blood sugars. This diet consists of quite a lot of saturated fat in the form of butter from grass-fed cows, and organic double cream - apart from these things, the rest of my diet is plant based, apart from some fish. Thoughts?
I have a question regarding shingles. My mom has been suffering from the shingles virus for months (around 5 months) now. The blisters have gone away but there's this painful band that wraps around her abdomen and it just will not go away. Do you have any suggestions as the pain is getting to be unbearable. It's an interesting meta-analyses, but your central argument was refuting claims made by Dr Greger. I would like to deconstruct that by asking you to tell me which claim exactly he made which had no basis behind it. Dr Greger typically provides a multitude of sources for his claims, and I want to know if those can be trusted. I'm trying to understand why you believe those are bad sources. Please specify a claim.
I fucking specified my claim, about the effect on humans of taking animal products, i asked you three times now. This should be not that hard to answer now is it? You're not willing to answer, and that is accaptable since it's probably impossible to come with a decent response. If these claims lack an amount of repeatability, stand aloner a double blind study, and there are very few to none other researchs to cover them, then i say yes.
