Your time in Iraq makes you a threat to society: Andrew Chambers at TEDxMarionCorrectionalSalon 2013

Оценок: 6485 | Просмотров: 569298
Speaking from prison, Iraqi war veteran Andrew "Sarge" Chambers tells the story of how he got there. As the judge told him when he sentenced Chambers to 10 years at Marion Correctional: "Your time in Iraq makes you a threat to society." Chambers reminds us of the sacrifices that linger with soldiers -- and simply asks us to listen. Andrew "Sarge" Chambers proudly hails from Pickerington, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army and has maintained the habit he acquired there of cursing just a bit too much. Throughout his service, Sarge was also able to maintain and hone his sense of honor and kindness, but the experience did slightly alter his sense of humor. While categorically not a morning person, when he is able to finally pry his eyes open, he always thinks to himself that he would rather be fishing. Most of his days are filled with coaching softball, Garth Brooks songs and thoughts of the family he hopes to be able to start soon. He is taking the stage to tell his story, parts of which can be seen in the documentary Operation Resurrection: The Warrior Returns. After TEDxMarionCorrectional he will work on his next unique thing. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I just retired after 20 years in the Marines and retired in 2015. First and foremost never forget that the military has one job and that is to train you to be a killing machine. You will never turn that off. Once you learn it that's it. You cant turn it off ever. Dice it up how you want but that's why it exists. The biggest change is America society itself. America changed more in 20 years than it had in the 60 years previous to that. Look outside and tell me how many kids you see playing. How many public place gatherings?. Every kid is in front of a video game or this thing we are all on right now a smart phone. We have become slaves to our own technology while at the same time alienating our fellow man. Meanwhile the military preaches commraderie, respect, brotherhood, trust and is very close knit. I only can speak for the USMC but on sure to some degree it exists in all branches. American society nowadays teaches you the complete opposite. Respect is laughed at, commraderie is a waste of time, brotherhood is not even thought about and doing the right because its the right thing to do isnt taught anymore. How do you expect someone who has had these traits pounded into them for 4 years or more be able to instantaneously turn them off? That in a nutshell is what makes me angry and honestly there isnt a damn thing a pill, therapist, wife or husband can do to fix that

Actually, this is a first-world problem. We 🇮🇳ns and people in so many other developing countries witness so much violence everyday and there is so much extreme poverty everywhere - everyday our soldiers get killed in Kashmir, we have faced so many terror attacks, the last big one being in Mumbai and so, we have learnt to cope up with stress

WHEN will people realize that war is not good vs bad, us against them. War is one of the most efficient ways to make unbelievable amounts of money. And where there is alot of money being moved around, there is corruption. A soldier is just a pawn in a chess-match where both (often one) sides are making money just by playing.

I'm a veteran of Iraq 2003, infantryman and I'm fighting in court now looking at 10years for nothing close to this soldiers story. I was and am called and deemed "a threat and danger to society". I don't understand where it all went wrong with being a combat veteran that fought to protect the rights of others but ours are so easily taken.

+Terry Omalley I am now on my third lawyer and the case has been dragging on for over a year. Served about 15 months now, the incident occurred August 8/7/2017, I'm now out on bond now with a new attorney, the VA has done NOTHING to help! It's been the worst thing I've yet gone through, and I've seen and been through a lot already. What's your situation?

The military and the generals knew most of those soldiers weren't going to make it out of those suicide missions. It was by design to send them into hot zones and get soldiers messed up in the head. I don't see any good general would do such a thing.

Israel and the United States did 9/11 and our country just went and murdered innocent people to make it look believable and to steal tax payer's money for themselves. These excuses to why you took innocent life are just pathetic. When you stand before Jesus Christ, "I was just following orders," or "I thought they flew planes in a building," or whatever other excuses you use to get by won;t be good enough for a perfect righteous holy God. You have to admit you were wicked and wrong and that you need a savior. If you can;t swallow your pride and deny your ego and see what you did was wrong you will never get better. This is the truth. I plead you read the word of God. I use to just think it was a story as well. But please trust me once you humble yourself and read it it will transform you into a new creation wth new desires. I'm speaking from personal experience of the miracle that happened to me. We are all wicked and walk in darkness without Jesus Christ and we can all come to have a relationship with him and be forgiving. It doesn;t happen over night. It's in a way like working out. It's not about how much you can do in one day. It's about the consistency and keeping up with it everyday. Start reading the bible maybe a chapter a night or a couple verses a night. And you will begin to transform and see how the word of God plays a part in your life. Jesus Christ is the way the truth and the light and no man come's to the father but by him.

Meanwhile the elites that profit from war and stage terrorism upon themselves themselves = their country to invade and profit foreign countries not personally of course but the US military = the elites gang accompanied by Europe's elites gang = Europes military to profit and remain the ones who control the world. this is what happens to the young soldiers who think they are honoring their country and people by being brave and putting their lives on the line to be inserted into foreign countries to play as a chess piece for all the wrong reasons and have their lives destroyed even when they are still alive because they are not the same person that signed up to the military years prior because that is what war does ALWAYS it changes every single soldier that is unfortunate enough to join the military and go play a deadly game of war and all WHILE the elites remain comfy safe rich playing golf spending time with family and friends and use these soldiers and militaries the same way those cruel sick bastards that use dogs in dog fighting operations and the dogs suffer and die while their masters fill their pockets.. Thank you for sharing this. It is not easy dealing with PTSD and it takes guts to bring it out into the open and make people aware that there are things in this world that mess up your head. Things most people will never see, hear, taste, smell, and touch, and by touch I don't mean with only the body. The mind can touch things too and the emotional toll of war is not easy to deal with. Coming home is hard, who is there talk to? Who will listen? The VA system is a farce and of little help for so many of us vets. Thank you brother for sharing your story. You gave this old vet and first responder a reason to keep fighting PTSD and if for no other reason it is to listen to another vet tell their story. Thank you Sarge. Would love to fish with you one day.

Good luck with your struggle, wish ya the best. Gotta say, tho - your sentencing sounds abnormally heavy and unjustified. I've worked in criminal justice for quite a while. The offender pulled a deadly weapon, you opted NOT to shoot with the weapon you had readily available. That is NOT an attempted murder. Was he permanently disfigured? If not, at most, you should be looking at a battery and agg assault for drawing on the other party goers. Bad judge.

This was hard to watch after my time in the Army. To often as soldiers we embrace the easier way of rage and forget the hard way of discipline. Rage will help you service the short game to to return to the world and survive you have to be disciplined. That means knowing yourself and doing the right thing. It's hard to admit we have problems but the only person in this world that will help you is you. The VA is a shameful organization that gives vets pills but no real help. I had to identify my issues and seek help this was out of my own pocket.

For your consideration; Any properly trained soldier is by definition a threat to society. Soldiers are not trained to serve, protect or assist. Their job, is to locate, close with and destroy their enemy. That's not a skillset or mindset that translates easily to "society". A properly trained soldier is a killer. Trained, tested and maintained, fully operational and ready for immediate use. Lets not forget what soldiers are. I am former, 0331 USMC.

I have PTSD. (I was trained as an infantry soldier) I was put in jail for going into combat, not realizing I was home, and not at war. In my mind I was at War. For three weeks I went through three shifts of guards, broke two out of three restraint chairs, as the guards beat me, broke my nose...etc. etc..I was covered in blood. Finally I came to.. and wondered why I was in jail. My family even told them, "He has PTSD", they didn't listen, nor did they care. The point is why are we the protectors of the world and our oath of enlistment never ended, put in jail and not sent to the VA hospital for care? Why aren't the police educated about PTSD so they can identify the symptoms and send us to a VA facility where they know how to deal with us? We come home after serving the civilians of our Homeland, only to be treated as a threat. Wounded Warriors is a program that helps people after serving after 9/11. The Veitnam Vets are just now receiving benefits for Agent Orange. In between these two time periods, they call it the lost soldier. We don't even receive full benefits, sit on the VBAs desk to have decions made after years, or even decades. Animals receive better protection and benefits in society than we do!

a very bad idea in America is hiring combat vets as patrol police officers. Combat and policing should share zero common ground. Hiring combat vets as SWAT or as weapons or hand to hand trainers is a great idea. We are not supposed to be a "police state", yet that is what we are. You are governed AT, which was never meant to be the case.

the judge did NOT have a "civil obligation to lock him up" in a max sec prison. he had a civil and MORAL obligation to demand the DoD take custody and put him in their psychiatric care, which they OWE combat vets. The judge shirked his obligations for his convenience.

What a country! It makes its own people go to a horrible war, kill people, loss people, almost die and when you return home it never goes away, because humans are not meant to be killing each other! If you go and ask for help you only get sleeping pills... that is terrible... and then because you didn't receive the needed help, you are a danger to others and the same country that made you go through all that experience locks you up in jail and makes you an underdog forever. It is really sad. Stop war!!!

Frankie Boyle said that ; "The USA is the only place that will go to a country , kill everyone , then return to that same country and make a movie about how it made *their* soldiers *SAD*. Its the equivalent of a serial killer complaining that stopping for hitch-hikers damaged his clutch". That was funny because its bloody true. " Lets drop 9 million tonnes of bombs on Vietnam, and then fell sorry for the pilots " Yeah ? *NO* !!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is there a production I can watch about the parents of 500,000 children under 5 years of age, who were killed DIRECTLY by Sanctions on Iraq ? Id like to hear about *their* PTSD. Im sure even some Nazis and SS had PTSD. In fact they definitely did. "Andrew Chambers" ...ok .......sad story. He even has a name !! But do ANY of you know the names of a single Iraqi child ? I know of one, 4 year old girl who was screaming for her mother , not being able to make sense of the fact that her mother was in small chunks dripping from her face and hands. Or are they simply not relevant ? 1/2 a million under FIVE !!!!!! (that does NOT include 6 year olds or 7 year olds ) Described by the United Nations as (Quote) " *Genocide of an entire society* " And *HE* is sad ? Indoctrination yes , not his fault. etc etc. But I think he should be a bit more than sad. Ive no doubt that if he wanted out of his cell for 5 minutes , he was forbidden to ask *WHY* ? , or mention the impact on the ENTIRE MIDDLE EAST

Regardless of the truth of any of this particular story, the basic problem is real. Every army in the world puts HUGE amounts of effort into turning civilians into soldiers, and little, if any effort into turning soldiers back into civilians. Governments should have SOME kind of process in place before flying service people home and straight out onto the streets.

That is why mainland/central European law considers every case unique. There's no such thing as a former decision of a judge determining the outcome of a current trial. Well, it does exist but only for very minor issues (stuff like running red light). Every case should be considered unique and all, even the tiniest, details should be gathered and examined. Also, how was he not diagnosed with PTSD and how this was not an extenuating circumstance? Vets should be followed up and helped by the government. It's nice when people thank for these people's service and all but this thankful feeling should manifest in real help as well. Vets should be given money enough to live, offered government jobs and receive medical care for their problems. People don't seem to understand how war/fighting can ruin soldiers. Physically and mentally as well. Often both ways. When someone gives everything they have (physical and mental health) they should deserve to get as much help as they need.

The idea of nuclear weapons being some sort of deterant is considered only in a fools world. Russia knows this and says so, have for the last twenty years tried hard to talk sense to America. Regretfully America makes its living from wars. Despite having signed agreement, to date America is the only country in the wor.d to continue usi g nuc,ear weapons in mostly every conflict THEY have started. Nuclear weapons not only inc,ude ICBMs but also any weapkn that uses nuclear effect such as depleted urainium weapons,, ans in the last twenty years America has used enough of these to have created s situation whereby the mess cannot be cleaned up, but they still continue to use them, which totally goes against the agreement they signed. Secondly the a greement signed at Yelta at the end of the last world war ended the agreement by saying that "NO NATO MEMBER would increase its boarders by one inch, Almost laughtable when one studies the present situation. America since that day has totally ignored that agreement to the point where it now has over 180 bases in most countries thousands of miles from America, it is the only country to do so, and the one country it likes to demonize, Russia, it has ONE base outside of its own boarders BUT ACCORDING TO AMERICA, IS THE AGRESSOR. Ever insanity cannot write this off as a mistake in stating the truth, but thw world still cannot find the guts to make the point stick when it comes to America and its never ending quest for a war somewhere to fight the boggy man of its imagination. All those countries that think they are under the safeguard of the American umberella are most definatly barking up the wrong tree because these countries are a lot closer to the one country America would really like a war with, Russia, when time and time againRussia hS said that war should be the very very last resort. However, as a country it still has a responsability to its own people to deffend them as best they can, this would mean that reguardless of the friendship between any country and Russia is clearly mared by having missiles pointed at Russia from those countries and would force Russia to have to eliminate that threat, after which there would be no effort needed from America to rush to their assistance as the would be little left to defend, and AMERICA KNOWS THIS AND HAS TAKEN IT INTO ACCOUNT, in other words, just as the last two wars, America sit on the other side of the ocean away from the onslaught and relatively untouched. It should be really laid on the line that this is the country who despite signing an agreement in 1945 has continued to use nuclear weopons in every conflict it has started, depleted urainum is a nuclear weapon and America has been throwning it about since the day it signed that agreement not to use these weapons It saddens me that the rest of the world seems to have its head under the sand when it comes to the plain truth, and it is this stupidity that will allow a country like America to be the one to wreck the only home we have without saying a word, or rather not have the guts to tell America a few home truths about its behavour in relation to the rest of the world, RUSSIA IS DEAD AGAINST ANY WAR AND HAS SAID SO ON Mny many occasions, i have a video of the premier of Russia talking to a whole load of people from the media where he spells it out for them and says "i have tried to get this through to you, why can you not print or show the truth, show both the people and the leaders of your country word for word what I have just said to you, why do you not understand? and why will you not let people know what we say rather than go away and make up a totally different story that inflames the situation rather than the truth???

Wining the war is the easy part. Wining the peace is the hard part. He can be a monster killing so many people that he lost the count, but he can barely take care of himself. The lesson is that when we allow us to be rendered by commands of war, we are losing the peace. We only win the peace when we reject it. Bottom line is that this guy has what it takes to salvage his dignity. The clear thoughts. The self awareness. All shows that he will come back and redeem himself.

We are very good at turning civilians into military personell - we have been doing it for thousands of years. But we are terrible at retraining military personell back into civilians - we have thousands of years of proving that. The problem has always been there, we just ignore the evidence and blame it on the individual who has served their nation, but is not able to fit back in perfectly. The society is to blame, not the individual.

Infantry veteran in a former life here; if you're not taking that training and experience and applying them to something positive in life, I'm sorry to say, but you didn't really get the message of what you're really doing. Our mission is (was) (CMF 11 4-1) to close with the enemy by fire and maneuver , to destroy/capture, and repel their assault. So tell me again how this differ in real life? It's the same thing, with the exception that no one is trying to physically harm you. -My advice is to take your strengths of hyper-vigilance, strategy etc., and use that to command your own life's battlefield. There's nothing that I don't know about in my industry. I know who the decision makers are, I can feel when the best time for opportunities are, I can even tell you what my competition eats for breakfast; and I can guarantee that none of my 'peers' have the fortitude to continue mission until the project is complete or until the sale is closed. That's what we bring to society, and that's how we should be marketing ourselves. The VA won't help you, and you're not back in the tent after a mission with your boys. The only one who is going to help you is you. -Keep up the fire Gents.
