Well..some fermented dairy like cheese in moderation is fine although I've cut out cheese from daily use, the biggest problem with dairy is cow's milk, that's the worst..that's literally asking for a bunch of toxins. There are so many reasons that Americans are so likely to be vitamin D deficient. The more you weigh the more vitamin D you need since 1) vitamin D is "sequestered" in fat, so the fatter you are the more supplemental vitamin D you need to keep your blood levels at LEAST 40-60 ng/ml. Dark skin, living further north than LA, the sun rays don't hit us at an angle that saturates the skin with UVB rays, using sun screen, covering the skin with clothing, staying indoors because "I don't want wrinkled skin", or you prefer air conditioned buildings to the great outdoors, not drinking milk or dairy alternatives with D, and the list goes on. The point is to take enough vitamin D supplement to keep your blood levels at 40-60ng/ml. I take 10000 per day, 170#, blood level is 80. :)

Sunshine (outside not through windows for UVB rays) is the best. Light skin = 10min per 1,000 IU = Dark skin 40min. if you are under 20 years of age 40ng/ml is recommended. 20-29 = 50ng/ml / 30-59 = 60ng/ml / 60-49 = 70ng/ml / 80+ = 80ng/ml . These are 25(OH)D blood levels as measured by a doctor. Always take D3 supplementation in the morning because D3 conversion interferes with melatonin a needed normal sleep hormone. Of course, if you have heart disease, cancer or a family history of either you should strive for the higher 80ng/ml D range.
1,000 IU is garbage. Also what the doctor prescribes to you is likely D2 which has half the half life of D3, it's an inferior form of D3. Just get D3 supplements and super dose them initially, you'll be good for a week..it's simple. Vitamin D is something you should never get from a doctor and one of the only things where OTC is superior.
Remember not to take a shower the day you expose your body to the sun light, 'cause vitamin D needs at least 24 hours to be absorb, white need only 20 minutes and black skin 45 minutes so your be making like 25,000 IU a day by doing it like this. Only need to do it 3 times a week.
And remember not to use sun cream, the more parts of your body you expose the most vitamin D3 you'll be making.
+Pheland123 Everyday close to 30mu2 hours daily from 8 to 10 am will not cause harm. ;) My mother has done this since she was 15, now she's 60, no wrinkles from Sun exposure, no skin cancer, or any other for that matter ( she just uses sunscreen on her face), and she's VERY healthy and beautiful. You will break the collagen in your skin if you expose yourself the whole day or for more than 2 hours.
