Why English Teaching Demo Classes Suck and How To Get the Job Without Wasting Time Abroad

Оценок: 116 | Просмотров: 2752
For a long time, demo classes for jobs teaching English abroad were the bane of my existence. It seemed that so many jobs wanted me to prove that I was able to teach before they'd let me teach. Over time, I figured out some quick ways to get out of them, still stay in the running, and make sure I was properly allocating my time to the job search and increasing my income. A lot of becoming successful at teaching is learning how to decipher what's really needed from what's not and ignoring the noise. Demo classes, especially ones that don't pay (and they should), should be minimized at all costs unless absolutely necessary and offering a substantial payoff. They can eat your time and sap your productivity. *********** 🥇COACHING/MANUAL/RESUME SERVICE ▶︎http://www.benteachesenglishoverseas.com 📕 FREE BOOKLET "The Big 6" ▶︎http://www.benteachesenglishoverseas.com/blog 📰 BLOG: http://www.benteachesenglishoverseas.com/blog 🎥 YOUR PERSONALIZED SKYPE CONSULTATION http://www.rockstarESLteacher.com 🔻 FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA🔻 🔵 FACEBOOK | http://facbook.com/benteachesenglishoverseas ✅ INSTAGRAM | http://instagram.com/benteachesenglishoverseas 💙 TWITTER | http://twitter.com/benteachesESL

How to make 5 minute video, what to put in it?

It is awkward!!!! It's totally different and definitely doesnt represent a classroom environment at all....
BenTeachesEnglishOverseas (1 год назад)
I totally agree!

Any thoughts on working from home online teaching ESL? Just seen job this posting...
BenTeachesEnglishOverseas (1 год назад)
For me personally it's terrible. It's not tax advantaged income and there is an insane amount of competition which leads to low demand for teachers (low pay).

Hey Ben what software do you use to edit and create your videos mate
Rick Belfield (1 год назад)
I agree thanks
BenTeachesEnglishOverseas (1 год назад)
I do no editing at all. I just hook up a webcam and run with it and drop the files into YouTube. I try to emphasize content and realness over gimmicky transitions and jingly music. I think most viewers of this channel are smart people seeking raw, actionable data and not entertainment.

That's an awesome idea (taking a video of a demo class)!!!! Thank you so much for the tip!!!!

I think Vietnam is definitely one of the better choices in Asia right now. It can, like many places, be a minefield though too. The cost of living is definitely cheap in many parts!
geraldojayster (1 год назад)
What do you think of teaching English in Vietnam? I hear there's a huge demand for English teachers there.. and the cost of living is insanely cheap.

My pleasure. I hope it helps!

I like videos like this because it's actual unique advice that Garners practical application. I know some of your videos are anecdotal and the one about the biggest disqualifying factor is yourself excetera a lot of that stuff is common sense. I get it you're creating content. But I like these videos where you provide content that nobody would know unless they actually talked to you or got your take on the subject. I appreciate your time and thank you for doing the video
Nicole Davenport (1 год назад)
Maynardj I like both....some of the common sense stuff is really helpful. For me, some of things he talks about are things I wouldn't have thought twice about or with little/no reservation....great example ----> negotiating a contract in another language...I thought that video was really smart....for me, that was big because I might of attempted to do that (in the future). I won't now!

Sure thing. Honestly some of the greatest advice I've ever gotten in my life was anecdotal and you never know when you'll turn on a light bulb for someone. I understand what you mean though and I'll try to keep them coming.

Hi Ben. I'm in Korea. I don't know why, but I feel wary about videoing my students or in school. It feels like if I set up a camera from the back of the room and record myself, my director might say something. Maybe I should ask for a copy of CCTV footage, maybe safer. Or perhaps I should pitch to the director that the footage is for me to observe myself teaching to improve teaching.

I would just ask for permission ahead of time.

You may want to target people of near retirement age that are looking to live in a foreign county while making some income. Just a thought, but this is a big demographic that is of an age in the USA where their employment opportunities are dwindling and they're interested in something new.
BenTeachesEnglishOverseas (1 год назад)
Sorry I missed this comment. To be honest, I started the channel as a hobby when I was going through a rough time in my life after my father died and I needed an outlet. Now that I'm semi-retired, I'm trying to give a lot more content and get better at videos and help as many people as I can. This is a great idea and I'll definitely consider the idea. Thank you.

as far as the same questions getting asked. maybe do a new video on those topics, you might have new ideas on them. some people might think they are outdated if they are over a year old. I have a new question I think. where can you find the high paying civilian contractor jobs overseas? I looked a few times and kept finding paid membership job boards.

There's no big compiler out there free of charge that I'm aware of. You have to apply through the individual companies for the most part. Thanks for commenting.

I have been watching your videos all morning before I go into class.I think the number one thing I got out of your videos so far is to treat yourself like a businessman/business woman. I have been struggling with the business getting in the way of education at my current language school in China, and this has caused me to get concerned. If I treat my school as a business first, I can easily stick up for myself when they try to pull something on me. Teachers need to learn to say no to language schools. Most schools are not going to risk you leaving for removing a student from a class or simply not teaching a new class. My school likes to break up classes and distribute students sometimes, and they will probably break up my Friday night class. I am going to tell the boss she is making a big mistake. I also like what you said about money being an afterthought for people. They think how much can I live off of to get by first. I am currently looking at sustainability right now too. My recommendation for people who struggle with eating crappy food at home is to fall in love with a cheap local restaurant. I eat dinner at 2-3 places near my house every night. It is either equal to or less than what it costs for me to cook a meal myself. I am looking into getting certified for business English. I think I might enjoy working with adults for my next contract. I also don't get why some people go out and shop all the time and complain they do not have any money left over at the end of the month. What do you mean by starting your money machine? How can somebody start investing overseas? Have you read Your Money or Your Life?

Great video! I think you were referring to the Hawthorne effect. Truth.

Yup. I hate demo lessons. I like the idea of filming bits and pieces from random lessons and making a "portfolio" instead.

Thanks, Tim! That's it for sure! It can definitely work in our favor.
