Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/O8uR Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: The main kind of antidepressant that is the most popularly prescribed are the SSRIs and these are medicines that increase serotonin transmission. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

Experts question whether emotional blunting is a true side effect of taking an antidepressant or whether it's a residual symptom of depression, meaning a symptom of a person's depression that does not get better with treatment (a partial failure of the medicine). With this conundrum, it's been difficult for experts to tease out the precise "why" behind emotional blunting. Even so, there is scientific evidence that a decreased positive affect is associated with dysfunction of the dopamine and noradrenaline pathways. As an aside, dopamine and noradrenaline are two chemical messengers in the brain (called neurotransmitters) that play a role in mood (along with serotonin, which is the chemical, SSRIs target). On that note, some experts believed that antidepressants that increase serotonin levels in the brain (for example, SSRIs) may dull the activity of dopamine and noradrenaline, which then leads to emotional blunting. Other experts suggest that an antidepressant may "overshoot" or increase serotonin levels too much, and this leads to an emotional numbness or that flat feeling. If you find that your depression medication is edging out all your emotions, talk to your doctor. This is a real effect, emphasizes Combs, but the good news is that it has real solutions. Switch antidepressants. It may be a good idea to move to another class of antidepressants entirely because someone who responds to one SSRI drug with emotional blunting may respond the same way to another one. Add a second medication. If switching to another class of drugs just leaves you with more troublesome symptoms (which can happen if you’re dealing with anxiety), ask your doctor about adding just a small amount of another antidepressant to free the reward pathways. Talk it out. If you’re feeling an overall loss of emotional response, working through the problems that are causing stress and depression in the first place (including solving practical problems like those related to housing or income) may help. Feel Depressed or Anxious? Talk to Someone Now http://www.tryonlinetherapy.com/depressiontoexpression/ Antidepressants do hold their fair share of side effects. Let's be honest, anti-depressants have created some pretty serious horror stories in the past and continue to be scary option for those who suffer from anxiety or depression. I get it, taking antidepressants should be a decision you are comfortable with first. Of course, with every bad story from antidepressants there are also many success stories from people who used the exact same drug that others used who had these horror stories. I would say that my anti-depressant story is an extremely positive one. Let's talk about some of the side effects of these drugs and an important differentiation between POSSIBLE side effects and PROBABLE side effects. There's the key word right there :) If you are to comment, please refuse from naming any kinds of medications as everyones treatment is different. Let's not discourage the use of anti-depressants or promote them. Whatever works baby!! If you're curious of the side effects: • feeling agitated, shaky or anxious • feeling and being sick • indigestion and stomach aches • diarrhoea or constipation • loss of appetite • weight gain • dizziness • not sleeping well (insomnia), or feeling very sleepy • headaches • low sex drive • difficulties achieving orgasm during sex or masturbation • in men, difficulties obtaining or maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction) • dry mouth • slight blurring of vision • constipation • problems passing urine • drowsiness • dizziness • excessive sweating (especially at night) • heart rhythm problems • confusion • agitation • muscle twitching • sweating • shivering • diarrhea • muscle pain • reduced appetite • confusion • feeling listless and tired • disorientation • agitation • seizures (fits) • suicidal thoughts SUBSCRIBE: https://bit.ly/2k1XpGt INSTAGRAM: http://www.instagram.com/depressiontoexpression FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/depressiontoexpression TWITTER: http://www.twitter.com/expressionscott HELP ME: http://www.patreon.com/depressiontoexpression WEBSITE: http://www.depressiontoexpression.com QUESTIONS? firstname.lastname@example.org Our Mission: Create an honest dialogue about mental health by educating and inspiring people to express themselves freely with confidence Thank you to everyone who supports this channel and the mission of Depression to Expression. I went partying on Saturday night. I wasn't really in the mood. I was feeling a bit flat and self-conscious. Until the drugs kicked in. Caffeine and alcohol. Red Bull and Vodka. Suddenly I was in the zone, brimming with confidence, bubbling with vitality, speaking freely to strangers -- maybe too freely. Astonishing how chemistry can transform our state like that! Take serotonin, one of the brain's key chemicals of happiness. How do we know this? Largely because of the effects of two of the world's most popular drugs: Prozac and Ecstasy. Popping Prozac makes you happy, popping Ecstasy makes you really happy. Well, not for everyone and sometimes with dangerous side effects. But neither of these drugs give us anything we don't have already. All they do is boost our body's own natural supply of serotonin. Turns out there is another way to boost serotonin. British scientist, Dr. Stephen D. Martin gave one group of depressed patients a course of serotonin-boosting anti-depressants. Another group participated in therapy that helped them shift out of negative, self-defeating thought patterns. Both interventions were almost equally effective in reducing depression. More astonishingly, both groups showed virtually the same altered brain activity. In fact the group that changed their thought patterns showed even greater activation of the cingulate gyrus, the part of the brain which responds to serotonin. Both drugs and therapy have their place but studies like these prove the power of our thoughts. Depressed people are usually not depressed because they have terrible lives, they're depressed because they have terrible thoughts. But even if you're not depressed, what can you do if you find yourself in a negative thinking downward spiral. You can change your thoughts through what I call the 3 D's: 1) Disputation: Debate the thoughts with three questions: 1) Is this really true? Most negativity exaggerates and catastrophizes. We often lie to ourselves making things worse than they are. 2) Ask: What is good about this? Look for evidence of why it's not quite as bad as you think. Or identify how this can build your character or teach you something. And finally 3) ask yourself: What can I do about it? And start focusing on solutions. 2) Distraction: Instead of ruminating on the thoughts do something else. Call a friend, read a book, meditate, exercise or implement a solution. Finally, 3) Detachment: Choose not to react to the thoughts. In Buddhist Psychology thoughts are seen as similar to sensations. Just like sights, sounds or smells, we can accept them neutrally, non-judgmentally without giving them our attention. The aim here is not to suppress or resist the thoughts, which energizes them, we simply let them be and let them pass. So, next Saturday night I'm going to get slammed ... on my thoughts. Jokes aside in a future episode I'll show you how it's possible to get drunk without a drop of alcohol. "In the beginning there was the word." So the Gospel opens. What is a word but a single thought. Thoughts create emotions. Emotions create actions. Actions, habits. Habits, character. Character, destiny. Govern your thoughts and you govern your destiny. If you suffer from anxiety, you'll know how debilitating it can be. Mel Robbins, a highly successful motivational speaker, author and coach, devised this particular technique to curb her own anxiety, and it’s one of my favourites. In this video interview, she explains how she suffered from anxiety and how she developed and now uses this technique. With practice, it can help alleviate anxiety and worry in a short space of time. She also explains how to deal with panic attacks, how to be perceived as more confident in meetings and how to improve your chances of promotion. So, give this a watch, put the techniques into practice and start to feel less anxious. Hypnotherapy can be a very effective way of overcoming anxiety.

Serotonin is a chemical produced by the body that enables brain cells and other nervous system cells to communicate with one another. Too little serotonin in the brain is thought to play a role in depression. Too much, however, can lead to excessive nerve cell activity, causing a potentially deadly collection of symptoms known as serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome symptoms often begin within hours of taking a new medication that affects serotonin levels or excessively increasing the dose of one you are already taking. Symptoms may include: Confusion Agitation or restlessness Dilated pupils Headache Changes in blood pressure and/or temperature Nausea and/or vomiting Diarrhea Rapid heart rate Tremor Loss of muscle coordination or twitching muscles Shivering and goose bumps Heavy sweating In severe cases, serotonin syndrome can be life threatening. If you experience any of these symptoms, you or someone with you should seek medical attention immediately: High fever Seizures Irregular heartbeat Unconsciousness Serotonin syndrome can occur if you are taking medications, particularly antidepressants that affect the body's level of serotonin. The greatest risk of serotonin syndrome occurs if you are taking two or more drugs and/or supplements together that influence serotonin. The condition is more likely to occur when you first start a medicine or increase the dose. The most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants, which work by increasing serotonin, are the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).These include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft). Other prescription and over-the-counter drugs that can raise serotonin levels alone or in combination to cause serotonin syndrome include: Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), a class of antidepressants including desvenlafaxine (Khedezla), desvenlafaxine succinate (Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), levomilnacipran (Fetzima), and venlafaxine (Effexor). Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), a class of antidepressants including isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), and transdermal selegiline (EMSAM) Buspirone (BuSpar), a drug used to treat anxiety disorders Desyrel ( Trazodone ), a drug prescribed for depression or insomnia Migraine treatments such as almotriptan (Axert), Amerge (naratriptan), rizatriptan (Maxalt), sumatriptan (Imitrex), and zolmitriptan (Zomig) Certain pain medications, including fentanyl (Sublimaze, Fentora), fentanyl citrate (Actiq), meperidine (Demerol), pentazocine (Talwin), and tramadol (Ultram) Dextromethorphan , a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter and prescription cough medicines or cold medicines Certain medications prescribed for nausea, such as granisetron (Kytril), metoclopramide (Reglan), and ondansetron (Zofran) Antidepressants that affect multiple serotonin receptors, such as vortioxetine (Trintellix -formerly Brintellix) and vilazodone (Viibryd) Some illegal drugs, such as LSD and cocaine, and dietary supplements, including St. John's wort and ginseng, can also lead to serotonin syndrome when combined with antidepressants that affect serotonin. The FDA recently asked drug manufacturers to include warning labels on their products to let patients know about the potential risk of serotonin syndrome. If you are uncertain about drugs you take or have been prescribed, check the label or speak with your doctor. Don't stop any medication before talking to your doctor. Serotonin Syndrome Diagnosis There is no single test to diagnose serotonin syndrome. Your health care provider will ask about your medical history, including medication, supplement, and recreational drug use, and perform a physical exam. Other conditions may cause symptoms that are similar to serotonin syndrome. Lab tests to exclude other causes of symptoms may be ordered. Serotonin Syndrome Treatments People with serotonin syndrome are typically hospitalized for observation and treatment of symptoms. For example, benzodiazepines are given to treat agitation and/or seizures. Intravenous fluids are given to maintain hydration. Removing the drug responsible for the serotonin syndrome is critical. Hydration by intravenous (IV) fluids) is also common. In severe cases, a medication called cyproheptadine (Periactin) that blocks serotonin production may be used. I recently shot a lot of footage while I was visiting a botanical garden in the hills and have been trying to think for ages what I should talk about. In the end it is better to just let your mind wander. I ended up talking a great deal about what it is like being on anti depressants and thinking how they are the answer to curing depression when in fact they really only act as a band aid for a short period of time. 2017 has been a real weird year full of self realization and deep contemplation about the things that make me happy and the things that feed into my ongoing depression. I hope this video is inspiring and informative if you are dealing with the same issues. I've cut the video up into parts because of the large file size and just because it is easier to upload. I recorded the audio on my iPhone and the footage was shot on the Nikon D3400. The antidepressants I have been on are Zoloft, Pristiq, Mirtazapine and Brintellix.

My name is Matt and 15 years ago I had my first diagnosis of major depression, although now I realize that I have lived with it my whole life. When I was younger I just did what I did and it wasn’t until it really started to affect my life and the lives of those around me that I knew I needed help. I have been in and out of doctors offices, I have done therapies and have spent months in hospital. I have lost jobs and been unable to get out of bed and at times been inconsolable. I have been on many medications including, Zoloft, sertraline, lexapro, escitalopram, endep, amitriptyline, efexor XR, Venlafaxine, mirtazapine, sodium valproate, seroquel, quetiapine and diazepam. (SSRIs). I know that medication is needed at times, but there is also a wealth of other things to learn and put into place in your everyday life. Now, I have a lot of skills to deal with depression in my daily life but I still have times when I all seems too hard. Also anxiety creeps in and without realizing I find myself being a victim of it over and over. Depression, when combined with anxiety becomes more complex but the skills for dealing with depression are just as useful for dealing with anxiety. I want to share what I know, because I would have greatly benefitted from a collective of knowledge 15 years ago. So I am documenting all the things I do every day to keep happy and motivated because I believe we can all grow through shared experience. Now with youtube and the internet we are all in a better place. Find out more on my channel or visit https://www.mattblack.me

My review for the (US unscheduled) novel antidepressant/nootropic tianeptine. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to enhance reality, fight depression, completely remove anxiety, and enhance brain function. Tianeptine also increases BDNF, which can cause neruogenesis. Great when combined with adderall, it can (subjectively) take the speedier edges away and eliminate the induced anxiety. SOURCES Gassaway, M. M.; Rives, M.-L. L.; Kruegel, A. C.; Javitch, J. Please consult a health care professional for all mental and physical healthcare needs. Please SHARE THIS VIDEO if you found it useful or if you know somebody who is suffering and/or feeling alone. Thank you. IN THIS VIDEO I DISCUSS MY EXPERIENCE COMING COMPLETELY OFF OR SEROQUEL THAT WAS LEGALY PRESCRIBED BY MY MEDICAL DOCTOR FOR MY MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY. MY STORY: My name is Noah and on May 18 2011, I had a rare reaction to a vaccine called VIVITROL and consequently spiraled into a major, agitated, suicidal depression with depersonalization. I lost 25 lbs in 4 weeks and was in full panic or near panic for 8 weeks straight mixed with the darkest most painful depression I cold have ever imagined. I immediately could not work and had to move in with my parents who along with many siblings and friends had to watch me 24/7 as I was so suicidal. I was eventually hospitalized. Getting through each day seemed truly unbearable and I knew I would surely die. I have been put on many many different SSRI's SNRI's Tricyclics, Mood stabilizers, anti psychotics, holistic meds, acupuncture and even a form of shock therapy called RTMS. I barely saw any improvement in my condition for a full year. It was decided I had treatment resistant depression and I spent nearly every moment in tears. Weeks after starting my newest round of medications (Seroquel & Nortryptaline) as a last ditch effort, I had my blood drawn for possible hormone imbalances and my Testosterone levels came back 200 ng/Dl and 150 ng/Dl. The average 25 year old male has 750 ng/Dl. With this discovery I for the first time had any type of possible explanation as to why I was not getting better and why I might be so so sick. The symptoms of such Low T are very similar to those of major depression. I started Testosterone replacement therapy soon after and have been checking in with the world and documenting my experience with treatment. I am blessed to say that I have slowly over the last 8 months been improving and becoming more stable which I never thought to be possible. My low T manifested itself in the form of Major depression, anxiety, and depersonalization/ derealization for over a year. I am glad to report that I have experienced improvements in all areas and that is a miracle. I do not consider myself to be totally healed yet but I am closer now then ever before and aim to use what I have been through to help or at least offer support to others in need.
