Eat Fruits, Vegetables, Legumes, and Whole Grains Basically, you want to follow the 1,000-year Rule: If it wasn't around 1,000 years ago, don't eat it! There went all frozen dinners, candy bars, sodas, white bread, most pastries, and French fries! You want to eat carbohydrates that are as self-limiting as possible to where you voluntarily stop eating them because your brain and body are telling you that you have had enough. That happens when the foods are natural, devoid of refinement or corn syrup, and high in fiber and water. While this list is not complete, each grouping tells you in general how healthy each food is or isn't. • The Best Fruits: apples, all berries, cherries, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, pears, plums, and tangerines • Occasionally Acceptable Fruits: apricots, grapes, kiwis, mangos, all melons, nectarines, papaya, and pineapple • Diabetically Dangerous Fruits: fruit juice, raisins, dates, figs, and all other dried fruits • The Best Vegetables: asparagus, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, eggplant, garlic, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, peppers, pumpkin, olives, spinach, tomatoes, turnips, yams, and zucchini • Great Vegetables (but higher in carbs): beets, carrots, peas, squash, taro, and yucca • Occasionally Acceptable Vegetables: baked or broiled potatoes, corn, tomato juice, tomato soup, and yams • Diabetically Dangerous Vegetables: French fries, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, hash browns, and creamed soups • The Best Legumes: butter beans, chickpeas, hummus, kidney beans, legumes, lima beans, and navy beans • Occasionally Acceptable Legumes: black-eyed peas, pinto beans, soybeans, unsweetened or artificially sweetened soy milk, and tofu • Diabetically Dangerous Legumes: baked beans, BBQ baked beans, bean dips, refried beans, burritos, chili high in sugar or with refined carbs, bean soups high in sugar or with refined carbs, and any bean cooked with lard or transfatty acids • The Best Whole Grains: all low-carb grain products, barley, Ezekiel 4:9 products, multigrain bread, oat bran, oatmeal, pumpernickel bread, rye bread, wheat bran, wheat germ, and whole grain bread • Occasionally Acceptable Grains: brown rice,wild rice, amaranth, whole grain bagels, bran flakes, whole grain cereals, whole grain pita, and wheat pasta • Diabetically Dangerous Grains: all cereals high in sugar and refined carbs, corn bread, couscous, sourdough bread, flat bread, white pasta, crackers, white rice, white bread, pastries, cakes, and chips • The Best Dairy: low-carb milk, butter, cream, eggs, cheese, plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and low-carb whey or casein protein powders • Occasionally Acceptable Dairy: plain yogurt, milk, buttermilk, and sour cream The best carbs listed above are high in fiber and low in calories compared to their size. 10. Salmonberry The salmonberry is a raspberry looking berry with a lighter color. The berry starts off yellow then turns a light red when ripe, they taste like a mix of a mild raspberry and blackberry. For this reason they’ll usually be found on the side of rivers and creeks. They are a rich source of vitamin c and k and are high in manganese. The salmonberry is not ideal for eating but better for making into jams, juice and wine. Most berry bushes have multiple uses, with the salmonberry the bark and leaves of the bush can be used to treat burns. The names comes from an old Native tradition of putting one of the berries in every salmon’s mouth caught for good luck. 9. Crowberry The crowberry or otherwise known as black crowberry or mossberry is a round purplish berry that has a very acidic, bitter taste to it. The crowberry is grown in arctic and subarctic regions of the world and have become a staple food for inuit, sami and tanaina people who inhabit the arctic. They are usually used in jams, jellies, ice cream, wine or juice but also have been used in cosmetics. The crowberry is high in vitamin c, k, manganese and copper. 8. Pineberry This white looking strawberry has a reputation for tasting and or smelling like pineapple plus strawberries. The flavor is a more tart, tropical tasting strawberry with a more muted flavor. They are native to Chile and available in early summer if you can find them. The pineberry can be eaten fresh or served usually with desserts like ice cream, cake and mixed in drinks. They are a partially self pollinating plant that are high in antioxidants, vitamin a and they boost the immune system. 7. Hawthorn Berry These bright red berries are grown on a thorny bush that has insanely sharp needles. The berry itself tastes a mixture of sweet and tart just make sure to spit out that large cherry like seed they contain cyanide. The hawthorn berry has powerful healing effects to the heart, including reducing blood pressure and increases circulation. 6. Gin Berry These semi transparent pinkish berries grow in large clusters. They grow in warm climates and can’t endure frost. The gin berry typically eaten raw or juiced. 5. Bearberry The Bearberry is a small round red berry that grow on a small ground level bush. They taste not much of anything are mealy and have slight sour and bitter notes to their flavor. Bearberry grows in arctic and alpine regions of the world. Caution should be taken when consuming them they may cause nausea or constipation if too many are consumed. If consumed for a prolonged period of time they may cause stomach and liver problems as well which is why it is recommended children and pregnant women avoid eating them. 4. Fairy Bell Berries These odd looking berries are bright red and grow in the shape of bells. The fruit itself doesn’t have any real markings or seeds on the outside like other berries, just a smooth ya fuzzy red exterior. The fair bell berries grow in moist forested areas that range from Arizona, USA to British Columbia Canada. 3. False Solomon’s-seal This edible berry has a mottled color which transitions from green to dark red as it ripens. It grows in large clusters much like grapes and has the taste of molasses mixed with the tart skin of a concord grape. The root is edible and cooked like a sweet potato, the young shoots are boiled and taste like asparagus. The False Solomon’s-Seal is high in vitamin c so if anything you can ward off scurvy with these little berries. 2. Solomon’s-Seal Solomon’s-Seal a completely different plant that just looks like it’s false counterpart yield berries that are dark purple. Both plants develop white flowers but instead of a large plume of tiny flowers the Solomon’s-Seal has flowers that hang below the stock in a row. Those flowers will develop into green berries that will eventually turn purple when ripe. With that said the berries are actually poisonous and may cause vomiting and nausea. 1. Kousa Dogwood Berries The Kousa Dogwood is a tree the gives life to the Kousa Dogwood berry. The inside is soft and creamy with the taste of papaya but the skin has a slight bitter taste to it. For this reason people often bite the fruit and suck the pulp out and spit out the skin. This berry is native to China, Korea, and Japan and is eaten raw and made into wine. Each fruit has 2 or 3 raisin sized seeds inside that need to be spit out, this can be a deterrent for some people to consume them along with the weird rough outer casing texture.
