My answer is that it really depends on you. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not: ⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain-free and therefore that rice is not healthy ⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and the preparation of the rice. Rice to stay away from: Refined White Rice (This is not jasmine or basmati rice but the sticky white rice from fast food or Chinese restaurants.) Rice Cons: • Fiber, minerals and vitamins have been removed. • Study shows that people are twice as likely to develop diabetes as opposed to those eating whole grain brown rice. • Contains phytic acid (enzyme inhibitor) which keeps you from absorbing and digesting vitamins and minerals. • Contains proteins that are difficult to digest Rice Pros: • Whole grain brown rice is high in B3 which is good for heart health. • Whole grain brown rice is high in selenium which supports the thyroid and kidneys. • Certain types of rice contain GABA, a neurotransmitter that can support the brain and help reduce anxiety as well as support metabolism. So ... is rice healthy? Is brown rice healthy? It depends on how it is prepared. I believe if rice is soaked and sprouted, it unlocks the vitamins and minerals versus most rices that aren’t sprouted. I personally consume an organic rice from the company, True Roots. It is a germinated brown rice (soaked and sprouted) which kills off phytic acid and is easier to digest. In Chinese medicine, look up “qi” or “chi.” They believe that short grain brown rice increase your body’s “qi” which is your body’s life source and energy. It is considered to be one of the #1 healing foods. I suggest my patients make a “congee” with chicken bone broth, brown rice and vegetables such as carrots and celery. This chicken vegetable rice soup is healing and nourishing to the body. In conclusion, is rice healthy? Yes, it can be if you are doing sprouted rice that is traditionally prepared. Eliminate processed foods Last, but not least, you need to eliminate the source of all evil. For cholesterol and blood pressure, that is processed foods. They are extremely rich in sodium, and we already said that sodium spells bad news for your blood pressure. Consume small meals Small meals mean that you will have frequent meals. How you eat is very important for your cholesterol levels. Food experts recommend that you have 5 to 7 small meals, spread throughout the entire day. An unhealthy way of eating is having three big meals per day. The latter gives you more cholesterol, and increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 10-15%. Consume whole grain products Every time you need to consume bread, pasta, or any other grain product, opt for whole grains. Products made of white flour increase your LDL cholesterol. I’ll cut right to the chase. My answer is: sometimes and in moderation. There are three reasons sprouted grains are better than regular grains: 1. Phytic acid is in regular grains, which is an enzyme inhibitor. (If you soak the grains, the sprouted grains unlock the nutrients that your body can absorb.) 2. Gluten in protein becomes more digestible. 3. Regular grains are high in carbohydrates, specifically a type of carbohydrate called amylopectin. Amylopectin affects blood sugar levels and can increase your risk of diabetes. Overall, sprouted grains are the better option, but it’s still not perfect or what I would consider a healing food. If you’re struggling with an autoimmune disease, removing grains for a while would allow your body to heal. Of these five, the most important and yet the most overlooked is the heart, just like most car users often neglect to take care of their car batteries, humans also tend to ignore their hearts literarily, until the heart begins to cause major health concerns. One of the most important factors that affects the operation of the heart is your cholesterol level, but we often try to shy away from this because it inadvertently affects what we eat. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is carried around the body in the blood. The body produces most cholesterol naturally, and it is found in some foods. Lipoproteins carry cholesterol in the blood. The two main types that carry cholesterol to and from cells are called low density lipoproteins and high-density lipoproteins, so cholesterol is basically a fat that your body needs to work properly. Too much bad cholesterol can increase your chance of getting heart disease, stroke, and other problems. The medical term for high blood cholesterol is lipid disorder, hyperlipidemia, or hypercholesterolemia. It is highly expedient to pay proper attention to your cholesterol levels and ensure you maintain the normal level as the two extremes, low and high wouldn’t do your body a world of good. Trans fats If you see partially hydrogenated fat in the Ingredient List of a food label, that food has trans fats, which not only raise bad LDL cholesterol, they also lower good HDL cholesterol. 3. Some of these chemicals also include pesticides which help prevent sea lice from spreading. 4 Grilled Meat: Nothing is better than cooking grilled meat under a nice fire. But what if I told you that this can increase your chances of getting cancer? Well, it’s true! Cooking meat under a fire can create carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. According to research and studies done on animals, these dangerous chemicals have been shown to cause cancer. 5 Hydrogenated Oils: You increase your chances of developing breast cancer of you constantly consume hydrogenated oils. In order to prevent the product from going bad, manufacturers have processed the oil by creating a chemical reaction with hydrogen. 6 Microwaved Popcorn: The bags are lined with Perfluoroalkyls, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). These are used to prevent the oil from seeping through the package when it’s heating up. Unfortunately when you heat up the bagged popcorn, these chemicals end up in the popcorn. In many studies, PFOA has been associated with tumors in animal organs. Not to mention the PFOA plant workers are also at risk of developing prostate cancer as well. 7 Non-Organic Vegetables and Fruits: Crops that are conventionally grown and induced with pesticides, GMO seeds, and herbicides. This means that all processed foods, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, white flour, white sugar, table salt, hydrogenated oils, aluminum, high fructose corn syrup, and etcetera should be eliminated from the diet.
