They're made up of long chains of amino acids linked together like beads on a string. There are 9 essential amino acids we must get from food, and 12 non-essential that the body can produce itself. The amino-acid profile of a food determines its quality as a source of protein. The best sources of protein in the diet contain all the essential amino acids in ratios that are appropriate for humans. Now per gram meat is the top source of high quality protein for humans. There are many plant-based foods with a strong amino acid profile too, but there are also many without. There's a theory that a high protein intake increases the acid load of your body, which then causes the body to take calcium out of the bones to neutralize the acid. But longer term studies do not support this idea at all. A review published in 2011 concluded that there is no evidence that increased protein harms the bones. If anything, the evidence points to a higher protein intake improving bone health, NOT the other way around. The same was found in a more recent review, with higher protein intake linked to better bone health. Although the authors note that increased protein may only be beneficial alongside an adequate calcium intake. So you can see the argument that protein causes bone health problems is not evidence-based. A large component of this theory overlaps with the acid-alkaline diet theory, which we've already debunked. The kidneys are a remarkable organ that filters unneeded substances out of the bloodstream, producing urine. Some say the kidneys need to work hard to clear the metabolites of protein from the body, leading to increased strain. But kidneys are always under loads of stress, that's what they're designed for. In fact about 20% of the blood pumped by the heart goes to the kidneys. They filter a total of 180 liters (48 gallons) of blood, every single day. Additional dietary protein increases a healthy kidney's workload by insignificant amounts. Looking through the literature, there are no studies showing harmful effects of protein in the average person with healthy kidneys. In this thorough review the authors concluded there is no significant evidence for a detrimental effect of high protein intakes on kidney function in healthy persons after centuries of a high protein Western diet. Even bodybuilders who tend to eat very large amounts of protein, both from food and supplements, have healthy kidneys. Additionally, the two main risk factors for kidney failure are high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes. A higher protein intake does not contribute to either of those conditions, and some studies suggest it may actually improve them. Now in saying that, if you already have existing kidney damage, then an increased protein intake can be harmful and is NOT recommended. Kidneys working at sub-optimal levels should not be worked anymore than is necessary, even if it's just a tiny bit. Just like you wouldn't walk or run on a broken ankle. Lastly let's look at how much you should eat per day, assuming your kidneys are healthy. If you are sedentary [and not looking to change body composition much], a daily target of at least 0.8 g/kg body weight (0.36 g/lb) is a good target. This should prevent protein deficiency. If you are an active person or attempting to lose body fat while preserving muscle, then a daily intake of 1.0-1.5 g/kg body weight (0.45-0.68 g/lb) is a good target. For athletes, aim for 1.5-2.2 g/kg body weight (0.68-1 g/lb) per day. I tend to eat around 1.5 grams per kg, and typically recommend the 1.0-1.5 g/kg body weight range, just because of all the health benefits a high protein intake has. Whether you're following a vegan diet or just trying to cut down on animal foods, pea protein will help you meet your protein needs. It can be a great addition to a healthy diet. This is due to their ability to provide essential and branched-chain amino acids in a highly absorbable form. It's no longer just about split pea soup, though. The benefits of pea protein may play a growing role in the U.S. food market. Pea protein appears to be the most hypoallergenic of all protein powders and has a 98% absorption rate. Pea protein has also been shown to be very easy on the digestive system and the protein is fairly quickly assimilated into muscle tissue. This is important because slower digesting and assimilating proteins have a greater chance of producing gas and making one bloated. Most plant proteins have poor assimilation rates but pea protein is one of the rare exceptions. Proteins found in a common garden pea may lower blood pressure and relieve other symptoms in those with kidney disease, according to researchers in Canada. Peas long have been recognized as nutritional superstars, with healthful amounts of protein, dietary fiber, and vitamins wrapped in a low-fat, cholesterol-free package. In the current study, researchers prepared a protein extract, then fed it daily to rats with kidney disease. After eight weeks, the blood pressure of the rats who had been fed the extract dropped 20 percent compared with rats whose diet had not changed. Researchers suggest that, in people with high blood pressure, the protein extract could potentially delay or prevent the onset of kidney damage and in people who already have kidney disease, the protein extract may help them maintain normal blood pressure levels so they can potentially live longer. This is sort of a natural approach to treating this disease, as opposed to the normal pharmacological approach. According to researchers, "We're talking about an edible product, not a drug, which can help to reduce blood pressure and, at the same time, reduce the severely negative impact of kidney disease." In addition, pea protein has the ability to lower levels of the hunger hormone, ghrelin. Your stomach secretes ghrelin when it’s empty to tell your brain that you’re hungry. Pea protein produces a great number of peptides that delay the emptying of your stomach and secretion of ghrelin. In fact, pea protein matches dairy-based proteins in its ability to help you feel full for longer. In a study conducted by the University of Toronto’s Department of Nutritional Sciences tested the effects of pea protein on food intake, glucose levels and appetite in healthy young men. While the addition of pea protein didn’t change food intake or appetite, the blood glucose levels of subjects stayed lower than they normally would. This suggests pea protein can be considered a value-added ingredient, and when added to other foods, it can improve glycemic control. Pea protein is one of the richest sources of the amino acid L-arginine. Arginine is a key precursor of nitric oxide which is responsible for healthy circulation. Arginine's role in the formation of nitric oxide has made it a key supplement for individuals looking to improve their cardiovascular health, athletic and sexual performance. Arginine is conditionally essential, meaning that you need more of it in times of stress or illness. Pea protein is also a great source of the essential amino acid L-lysine. Lysine is the precursor of carnitine which is responsible for converting fatty acids into energy. It also plays an important role in the formation of collagen which is the building block of connective tissue regions such as bones, cartilage, skin and tendons. The simplest way to get pea protein powder is to add it to your favorite smoothie. Pea protein can be used in either hot or cold recipes. Insulin plays a major role in metabolism - The digestive tract breaks down carbs into glucose. Insulin helps cells throughout the body absorb glucose and use it for energy. Insulin helps muscle, fat, and liver cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream, lowering blood glucose levels. Glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin so that the rate of glucose production by the liver is matched by the rate of use by the cells. Insulin helps muscle, fat, and liver cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream, lowering blood glucose levels (allows glucose, amino acids, and creatine to enter the muscles) Insulin stimulates the liver and muscle tissue to store excess glucose (1) Insulin Resistance: In insulin resistance, muscle, fat and liver cells do not respond properly to insulin and cannot easily absorb glucose from the bloodstream - the body has to produce higher amounts to keep the blood glucose levels within a normal range. In other words, a person's body won’t be producing enough insulin to meet their needs because the body’s cells have become resistant to insulin. The cells aren’t as responsive to insulin and don’t “allow” enough glucose from the blood into the cells - Glucose remains in the bloodstream, causing high blood glucose levels. Study: A study published in the Journal of Diabetes and its Complications looked at the prevalence of insulin resistance in the United States during the periods 1988 -1994 and 1999-2002 - Found that 32.2% of the US population may be insulin resistant. Main Cause of Insulin Resistance: Insulin is released when the body has just been fed, which halts the body's burning of stored fat - also works on fat cells similar to how it works on muscle cells, opens them up for storage. This may be caused by fatty acid metabolites building up inside muscle cells, termed “intramyocellular fat” that disrupts the signaling pathways needed for insulin to work. Insulin is closely associated with obesity and weight gain, but it can also result in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. (3) Insulin Sensitivity: When insulin is lowered, your body does not get the message to replenish fat and glycogen - means you are insulin sensitive and your body only requires a small amount of insulin in order to deposit glucose to your cells. Not only does insulin sensitivity promote weight loss, it also promotes healthy brain, artery, and pancreatic cells as they are no longer exposed to high levels of blood sugar for an elongated period of time. High blood pressure (which can result from insulin resistance) puts strain on your heart, increasing your risk of angina, hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart attack and heart failure. Ways to Reduce Insulin Resistance: - Lower your caloric intake (and carbs) - Exercise that burns glycogen and leaves your muscles empty (fasted training a +) - I.F. and Ketosis Magnesium: Magnesium improve and helps correct insulin sensitivity because an intracellular enzyme, called tyrosine kinase, requires magnesium to allow insulin to exert its blood-sugar-lowering effects. Doctors followed 234 participants with three of five metabolic syndrome symptoms; abdominal obesity, high blood pressure or high fasting blood sugar, high triglycerides or low levels of HDL. After 12 months, only one in four met the recommended daily allowance for magnesium which ranges from 320 mg to 420 mg per day. What is Whey Protein: People commonly use whey as supplementation, alongside resistance exercise, to help improve muscle protein synthesis and promote the growth of lean muscle mass. But what is it, and what are the benefits of using it? Milk is made of two proteins, casein and whey. Whey protein can be separated from the casein in milk or formed as a by-product of cheese making. Whey protein is considered a complete protein as it contains all 9 essential amino acids. It is low in lactose content. There are many benefits associated with the consumption of whey protein, and researchers are constantly finding new possible therapeutic properties. Here, we explain what the benefits might be, and look at some of the side effects and potential risks. Fast facts on whey protein: Many of the potential benefits are based on single studies and more evidence is required before making definitive judgment. Whey protein is a mixture of beta-lactoglobulin, alpha lactalbumin, bovine serum albumin, and immunoglobins. Possible benefits include weight loss and lowering cholesterol. Possible dangers include nausea and headaches, but at moderate doses, whey protein is not considered dangerous. Benefits Whey protein, pictured here, is used for many things including muscle building and weight loss. I’ve noticed even grass-fed meat and free-range poultry can still cause high cholesterol in some of my patients, especially the “sensitive” ones. Limit your intake and focus more on vegetable proteins and fish - especially wild-caught salmon. Eggs Eggs can be good or bad. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. However, most of the nutrients, antioxidants and half the essential amino acids (protein) are also found in the yolk. The problem is when you COOK the yolk - such as hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs. The heat oxidizes the egg and damages both the structure of the protein and fat. So the healthiest way to eat eggs is raw or lightly cooked, so the yolk is still runny. Don’t fry it with butter or vegetable fats. And make sure it’s organic, free-range eggs. Baked Foods/Carbs (Snacks Too) Baked foods such as muffins, cakes, breads, donuts, croissants, rolls, cookies, danishes, scones, pie, etc… The types of foods most people eat in the morning when they’re in a rush, or with their coffee or at work as a snack… These are all bad because they contain hydrogenated and saturated fats, as well as dairy.
