http://www.VeeMD.com. Dr. Vandana Bhide speaks to WJXT Morning Show ( http://news4jax.com) host Staci Spanos about the recall of certain batches of children's brand name Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl and Zyrtec products made by McNeil Pharmaceuticals. You can get a refund or replacement of the recalled items at http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/. Some Tylenol products have as much as 24% more of the active acetaminophen ingredient than expected. This is not likely to be dangerous in a child who is not taking Tylenol regularly. However, most concern is centered around infants taking Tylenol or Motrin, because the infant's forms are more concentrated than the children's versions. Also, kids taking Motrin or Tylenol regularly for certain medical conditions may be at higher risk for possible problems. It is safest to avoid using the batches with NDC numbers listed at McNeil product recall website. Ask your pediatrician if you have any questions about the use of these products in your children. In general, generic versions of all these medicines are available and can be used in place of the brand name versions that have been recalled.

When companies lose the public’s trust – whether it’s Facebook selling user data or United Airlines mistreating passengers – PR specialists scramble to head off a crisis. That strategy gained a foothold in 1982, when a mysterious killer spiked Tylenol with cyanide. Savvy PR decisions are credited with saving the company. So why do today's corporate leaders have so much trouble learning how to respond? Officials from Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) issued a voluntary recall of 128,000 Tylenol bottles in the company's latest spate of consumer medicine recalls stemming from apparent quality control issues, Reuters reports Tuesday. The most recent Tylenol recall is due to a moldy odor in the painkiller. "This voluntary action is being taken as a precaution and the risk of adverse medical events is remote," company officials said in a press release. Johnson & Johnson is facing a U.S. congressional investigation stemming from quality control issues of Tylenol, Motrin and Benadryl.

On September 29, 1982, three people died on Chicago's west side in a killing spree that would eventually claim seven lives. The murderer, still unknown to this day, tampered with bottles of Extra-Strength Tylenol, lacing the capsules with cyanide. Officials at the Food and Drug Administration hypothesized that the killer stole capsules from the store, injected the poison into the red side of the pill, resealed the package, and returned them to the store for unsuspecting customers to purchase. Another common hypothesis was that a disgruntled Johnson & Johnson employee had inserted the cyanide into the capsules while they were still on the factory floor. Either way, the deaths were sudden, random, and created the need for Johnson & Johnson to move quickly in order to protect the image of the company. Johnson & Johnson issued a recall of all products currently on shelves or prepared for shipment and developed new product protection methods to protect their consumers in the future. One of these protections was a new tamper-proof packaging, which included foil seals and other features that made it obvious to a consumer if someone had attempted to open the package. The company also introduced a new version of their pills — a tablet coated with gelatin that would be much harder to alter than the original capsules.

Tylenol has been the recipient of over 40 recalls in the past several years. Most of these recalls are due to "bad batches" of some sort. However, it's also linked to an increased risk of liver failure. In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a "black box" warning, their highest warning level, for some Tylenol versions because of the associations with liver injury. In March of 2011, the FDA and the Justice Department took over three Johnson and Johnson Tylenol factories to conduct a criminal investigation based on a series of recalls. They found more than 20 violations of manufacturing protocols and two executives of a subsidiary company were charged for failing to follow legal manufacturing standards. For a list of recalled Tylenol products, visit our website at www.productsthathurt.com. And if you've taken a recalled batch or believe you suffered complications as a result of taking Tylenol, you may be eligible for compensation. Call us for a free case evaluation at 1-866-844-4262.

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) announced late yesterday that the company is recalling more than 60,000 bottles of extra strength caplets because of a musty odor. The company has recalled dozens of other products over the last year for the same "musty odor." The recalled product was manufactured in February, 2009. The voluntary recall was due to a "a small number of odor reports," the company's McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit state in a statement. While the risk of any serious medical problems is remote, the odor has been linked to a chemical that can cause "temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal symptoms." Shares of Johnson & Johnson are trading up 0.74% at $66.4.

A Johnson & Johnson subsidiary has pleaded guilty to selling liquid medicine contaminated with metal, and will pay $25 million to resolve the case. McNeil Consumer Healthcare pleaded guilty to one federal crime, following 2010’s mass recall of over-the-counter-medicines, such as infant’s Tylenol and Children’s Motrin. In addition to metal particles getting into the liquids, mouldy odours and labelling problems plagued the company, and the recalls contributed to the first back-to-back sales decline for Johnson & Johnson since World War Two.
