In this impassioned talk, Ben Goldacre explains why these unreported instances of negative data are especially misleading and dangerous. Are less-expensive generic drugs being delayed to market by so-called "pay for delay" deals between drug companies? The deals happen after generic drug companies challenge the patents on brand-name drugs. The settlements include a date that the generic drug can enter the market, and in some cases, a payment from brand company to the generic company.

For more information on how we file your Lipitor lawsuit visit us on the web Lipitor is also new known by the generic name of atrovastatin. This medication also known as a statin treats high cholesterol and heart disease. Lipitor is manufactured by Pfizer and the overall goal of this medication is to reduce the level of bad cholesterol while at the same time increasing the level of the good cholesterol since it helps the body. Lipitor works by inhibiting an enzyme that is found in the body and particularly in the liver which plays a role in the creation of cholesterol in the body. When Lipitor reduces bad cholesterol in the body this also in turn reduces a patient's risk of developing cardiovascular disease. When Pfizer first created Lipitor it was approved by the FDA in 1996. Since that time it has been known as one of the highest selling medications for drug companies. Lipitor has sold over hundred billion dollars' worth of this medication. Not everyone uses the Pfizer brand of Lipitor. Most some people also use the generic version of this medication. Though initially Lipitor seemed to be helpful, in February 2012 the FDA issued a warning noting the harmful side effects of Lipitor from patients who take it. Some of these warnings called for Pfizer to change the warning label on Lipitor. This new warning label let patients know that Lipitor could cause liver issues confusion and memory loss and also heightened blood sugar levels. After Pfizer changed the new warning label the FDA also issued their own warning to let patients know that Lipitor creates specific interactions with other medications that is used to treat hepatitis C. This new warning label also let patients know that these interactions could lead to muscle injury and myopathy. Myopathy is a very serious disease. It could lead to kidney failure and kidney damage and in some cases it can prove fatal. http://lipitorlawsuitsettlementlawyer.com/ https://www.facebook.com/LipitorLawsuitSettlements http://youtu.be/WWuUseZoceQ

Statin Side Effects

04:37
http://heartfitclinic.com for free webinar. Statin Side Effects Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death and number one cause of hospitalization in developed countries. Statin drugs are a common drug of choice in the prevention (lower cholesterol) and treatment of heart disease. The research is quite compelling showing the benefits of statin therapy. However does everyone need a statin? Let me start off by saying I am a big fan of statin therapy early on in the diagnosed heart disease process if patients can handle it. There should be a goal to eventually wane off this medication with a heart healthy lifestyle. The latest research on statin drug side effects shows that high potency statins are linked to acute kidney injury. What is high potency? 1. 10 mg or more of rosuvastatin (Crestor) 2. 20 mg or more of atorvastatin (Lipitor) 3. 40 mg or more of simvastatin (Zocor) Other side effects of statin drug therapy include: 1. Muscle pain and damage (Check out our great post on coenzyme q10 statins) 2. Liver damage. 3. Digestive problems. 4. Increased blood sugar or type 2 diabetes. 5. Neurological side effects such as memory loss, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease) Talks are they should be in the water that we drink but really you can do a lot with nutrition. I just read that there was a grocery store chain that was providing free statins (atorvastatin) to its customers. This was obviously a marketing promotion to get new customers. Pfizer branded Lipitor (atorvastatin) but their patent expired in 2011. So now the blockbuster drug is on the generic market. Pfizer has now just announced it will not market the drug anymore (all about making the shareholders happy). At the end of the day statins are a drug and they can come with side effects. The risks of taking a statin with statin side effects should be outweighed of the benefits. Because statins have side effect caution should be used when prescribing these drugs. Patients should understand the side effects of statin drugs. If you are diagnosed with high cholesterol and have been prescribed a statin then a good discussion has to be had with your prescribing doctor as to the reasons why? Doctors are given a handful of minutes at times with patients and try to mask the problem with a drug. Having high cholesterol does not mean you have to take statin therapy. As mentioned there are side effects and patients should be given a chance to reduce their numbers through lifestyle intervention. Good exercise program, stress management practices and nutrition program with possibly some supplements. Try this lifestyle therapy for 3 to 6 months and most people will see a big difference without having to go on statin therapy. In the event no change has been made then your healthcare team can decide the next step. It is important to understand that cholesterol is not the reason people end up with heart disease. It is inflammation. So the goal is to lower the inflammatory response. The reason statins do a great job is that it lowers LDL cholesterol and it also lower inflammatory response. You can always read my post on the truth about how to lower cholesterol. To your heart health success, Diamond Fernandes

Part D Drug Plan - How Formularies & Tiers Can Cost You!!

06:18
http://www.FirstMedicareAdvisors.com - - Recorded Hotline: 1-800-958-8171 - Office: 1-800-825-2919. - - Email: info@firstmedicareadvisors.com - - PS: No Sales Pitches Ever! We hate'em as much as you do! The Medicare Part D is your drug coverage. Here is a key point: The Part D drug plan is completely different than the drug plan you may have had as an individual or at your workplace. They are not the same types of benefit. Part D Plans are required to cover certain types of drugs, but they may choose which drugs it covers. Your drug plans are offered by private insurance companies. Before we talk about drug tiers, let’s talk about how the companies offer their benefits: All prescription drug plans have a formulary that lists the drugs covered. By law, both brand name and generic drugs must be included in the formulary. They also must have a variety of those categories. Each plan’s formulary can be different from other company benefits. And formularies can change from one year to the next. Well, how does the drug plan create its formulary? The purpose of the formulary is to identify drugs that work for you. But - also price-effective for the company. The effort to control costs is why they use of drug tiers The companies divide the drugs they provide into “tiers.” The level each drug goes into is based on what price the plan pays to the pharmaceutical manufacturer. If a drug program receives a lower price on a drug, then it can place it in a lower tier and pass the savings onto you. Each plan has a different copay, coinsurance, and deductible. Therefore, you pay more for a drug on one plan’s formulary over another plan. Each insurance company decides its own tier formula. They may offer you a formulary with several different levels. The lower level drugs have the lower cost. The price increases based on the higher tier. If you have a question or need help with your different parts of Medicare give us a call at either our Recorded Hotline at 1-800-958-8171 and record your question or request. The second and quickest way is to call my office direct at 1-800-825-2919. You’ll get an answer to point you in the right direction. Here’s how drug tiers typically work: Tier 1 is usually generic drugs with lower costs. Tier 2 is usually “a preferred” brand name medication. These are drugs that the insurance company has negotiated to get lower prices. Tier 3 is called the “non-preferred” drug brands that are the same as the tier 2 brand names. But the plan must charge the drug company price. Tier 4 is usually the specialty drugs. You will often be required to pay a coinsurance and copay on these drugs. Tier 5 is usually the experimental drugs and cost the most. Most likely your formulary is going to change. Why? Because tiers will be changing for different drugs? For example, a few years back I was taking a drug called Lipitor. Man, was it pricey! But eventually, a generic called Atorvastatin came on the market. Fortunately - the price dropped dramatically. Regularly generic versions of drugs come into the market. The pricing for drugs may be renegotiated during the year. Both these scenarios can cause your plan to add or remove your drug from your formulary. The plan may move it to another tier. To save money you want to know and understand your plan’s drug tiers. When you enroll in a Part D plan check the tiers for the drugs, you currently take. Then you can calculate your copay or coinsurance. If you’re prescribed a new drug by your doctor, find it in your formulary and see which tier it is in. What happens if your doctor prescribes a drug that costs more because of a higher tier in your formulary? If that happens, ask your doctor to prescribe a drug that costs less on a lower tier. Generally, generics are a good place to look for prescription savings. Talk to your doctor about what lower-priced drugs may work for you. If you can’t find a good similar drug file a request and ask your plan to allow you to pay a lower price for a higher-level tier drug. If you need additional information about your prescription drug resources, give our office a call on our Recorded Hotline. That number is 1-800-958-8171 and then record your question or request. However, the best way is to call my office direct at 1-800-825-2919. You’ll get an answer to point you in the right direction.

Amazon Generic Prescription Drugs? Idea of the day #230

01:14
I think Amazon should sell generic prescription drugs. A 30 day supply of Lipitor can cost over $200 in some stores, whereas a generic version can cost quite a bit less, depending on where you get it. Costco for example sells their generic version for about $16. The trouble is, it's not easy finding a store that has reasonably priced prescription drugs. That's why I think it would be great for Amazon to sell generic prescription drugs. Not only do they have the buying power to insure a low price, but they have the logistics to insure fast shipment in all 50 states. When you couple this with Amazon's Subscribe and Save program, for automatic delivery, they have just what it takes to become the leader in generic prescription medication. This was featured as the October 28, 2016 Idea Of The Day. http://www.ideaoftheday.com/Blog/article.aspx?p=859 I post a new idea each day on my Idea of the Day Blog. Lipitor Lawsuit - Type 2 Diabetes

03:02
If you developed Type 2 Diabetes while on Lipitor, visit http://www.infinitylawcenter.com Lipitor is the brand name for the drug atorvastatin. Made and sold by the American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, this prescription medication is used to treat high cholesterol. The FDA approved Lipitor in December of 1996, and doctors can prescribe it in 10 mg to 80 mg tablets to be taken daily. Pfizer's Lipitor patent expired on November 30, 2011, at which time competitors immediately began offering cheaper, generic formulations of the drug. Like other drugs belonging to the statin class of hypolipidemics, Lipitor prevents the creation of low density lipids (LDLs) in the liver. LDLs are the type of cholesterol that block arteries, so inhibiting their production reduces users' risks of developing heart disease. On January 9, 2012, the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine published a study analyzing a possible link between statin use in women and type-2 diabetes. The researchers investigated 161,808 women between the ages of 50 and 79 years old who participated in the Women's Health Initiative over the course of several years. They found that women who took drugs belonging to the statin class were 48 percent more likely to develop type-2 diabetes than women who did not. This 2012 study came after two previous ones published in the Lancet and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The Lancet study found statin use correlates to a nine percent increase in developing type-2 diabetes. The JACC study specifically focused on Lipitor and found that daily doses of Lipitor at 80 mg increased the risk of developing diabetes by 37 percent over a placebo. In February of 2012, the FDA changed Lipitor's drug label to reflect the fact that it increases a user's risk of developing type-2 diabetes. In addition, Lipitor can cause skeletal muscle side effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, a condition characterized by atrophying skeletal muscle tissue. The lost muscle mass (myoglobin) collects in patients' blood and can cause severe kidney problems and even death. Primary symptoms include: • Pain • Tenderness • Weakness • Swelling The broken-down muscle mass can cause other problems throughout the body such as: • Electrolytic disturbances • Nausea • Vomiting • Confusion • Coma • Cardiac arrhythmia • Dark urine • Oligura or Anuria (decreased or non-existent urine production, respectively) • Internal blood clotting Also in February 2012, the FDA informed the public that it was investigating reports of Lipitor memory loss that occurred to users who had been on the drug for several years. Symptoms arose in every age group, though more often in patients over the age of 50. Examples include: • Memory loss • Forgetfulness • Confusion • "Fuzzy" or unfocused thinking Patients who have taken Lipitor and developed type-2 diabetes have filed lawsuits against Pfizer, Lipitor's manufacturer, for injuries caused by Lipitor's potential side effects. These lawsuits are currently pending in courthouses throughout the country. Many of them allege that, way before 2012, Pfizer was aware of—but nevertheless failed to warn customers about—Lipitor's propensity to increase serum glucose levels. If you took Lipitor and believe it caused an injury, you might be entitled to compensation from the manufacturer. Infinity Law Center will consult with you for free, possibly filing a lawsuit on your behalf. You will not be charged a penny until you receive compensation for your injuries.

FDA Drug Info Rounds, July 2012: Patents and Exclusivity

03:20
Patents and exclusivity work in a similar fashion but are distinctly different from one another. Patents are granted by the patent and trademark office anywhere along the development lifeline of a drug and can encompass a wide range of claims. Exclusivity is exclusive marketing rights granted by the FDA upon approval of a drug and can run concurrently with a patent or not. Exclusivity is a statutory provision and is granted to an NDA applicant if statutory requirements are met. Exclusivity was designed to promote a balance between new drug innovation and generic drug competition. [vpdrugs]

11 Generic Manufacturers Approved to Sell Plavix as a Generic - NY Attorney Dan Burke Explains

11 Generic Manufacturers Approved to Sell Plavix as a Generic - NY Attorney Dan Burke explains more at: https://www.yourlawyer.com/defective-drug-attorneys/ Watch as attorney Dan Burke of Parker Waichman discusses how generic versions of the drug Plavix will soon be on the market. Used as a blood thinner, Plavix is a brand name drug that typically costs $200 a month for the prescription. Patients on the drug are being treated and prevented against blood clots. However, this drug has been flagged as being potentially harmful to patients. Patients and doctors are reported adverse effects such as bleeding events. Cases have been reported with patients experiencing bleeding in their lungs, stomach, and brain. So how does this affect the generic form? Well, generic form drugs are not allowed to change how the drug is made only offer it at a cheaper price. Because of this, you cannot go after the company if you are harmed by the drug as they are not responsible for the drug's faults. Sometimes trying to save money on a product does not equal to a good deal. Watch this video now to learn more. 'Evergreening' Is What Drug Companies Do To Increase Their Profits

01:17
Drug companies are awarded patents on a new drug for 20 years. After 20 years they have to allow for the generic manufacture of these drugs. Evergreening is when a company makes minor change to the drug to receive another 20-year patent. This leaves people in developing countries forever unable to get the medicines they need. India has a law that stops evergreening. Novartis has been fighting this law for 6 years. If they win, people all over the world will lose - they will lose a lot more than just a court case.
