In this case, the muscle cells are not able to recognize glucose-bound insulin, and therefore glucose remains in the bloodstream causing a spike in blood sugar levels. This finally leads to weight gain and Type 2 diabetes. 3. Leptin, Under normal conditions, the hormone leptin signals that you are full and should stop eating. But due to overconsumption of foods that are high in sugar content such as candies, chocolates, fruits (that are modified to contain a lot more fructose), and processed foods, the oversupply of fructose is converted to fat that gets deposited in liver, belly and other regions of the body. Now, fat cells secrete leptin. As you keep consuming more fructose-containing foods, more fat gets accumulated, and more leptin is secreted. This, in turn, desensitizes the body to leptin and the brain stops receiving the signal to stop eating. This ultimately leads to weight gain. You're focused on the show, so you just keep eating, snacking and drinking. You're not "mindful"... So watch TV without any snacks or foods, unless it's vegetables with NO dressing. 2 - Eating Too Quickly Most of us are in a rush and we're not chewing your foods properly. This causes stomach problems, gas, bloat, acid reflux and weight gain. And one of the reasons you gain weight is because 20 minutes of eating, typically signals your brain that you're full. When you eat slowly, you'll eat LESS food during that time…. Because your brain shuts off your appetite. 3 - Drinking Your Calories Drinking your calories is a big problem because it only takes a couple of minutes to have juice, soda, a "shake" or any other liquid that's loaded with lots of calories. Eating real food causes a "thermogenic" effects, thus increasing your body temperature and metabolism. Also, "drinks" are typically loaded with lots of sugars, which spike up your insulin levels and increase belly fat. 4 - Not Moving Enough Your body is made to move. Yet, most people just sit all day -- you're sitting at work, in your car, behind the computer, while eating and so forth. You need to exercise or "move" daily. Simply taking a brisk, 20-30 minute walk daily will increase your metabolism because it improves your hormones and reduces cravings. 5 - Not Eating Often Enough Most people skip breakfast, which isn't a good idea. But the bigger problem is that most people skip lots of meals and then when they do sit down to finally eat, they are so hungry that they'll eat anything and make poor eating decisions. By eating more often, you'll have more energy, better blood sugar levels and less cravings and hunger. Also, the more often you eat, the faster your metabolism because your body has to "turn on" to digest all the food. Thus, eat smaller meals, more often. This can be 3 regular meals like breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus 2 smaller "snack" meals. You can eat the same calories, but spread it over 5 smaller meals and you'll lose fat and feel better too. 6 - Not Drinking Enough Water Most people don't drink enough water and thus, are walking around dehydrated. To make it worse, most people are loaded on caffeine products -- coffee, "energy drinks", tea and so forth. When you're dehydrated, your more tired and fatigued. This causes you to move less and burn less calories. Drinking water, especially cold water, causes a thermogenic effect, similar to eating more meals. Drinking water, especially before a meal, also reduces hunger pains and cravings. With a lot of research and my own practitioner experience with a MS in Nutrition, BS Environmental Science, and AS in Massage Therapy. I knew there were something going on, one doesn't lose weight and feel crazy for no reason. One of my physicians gave me a mega dose of bioidentical progesterone at 200 mg / day. I gained a pound a week! All progesterone turned into estrogen and weight gain was so bad I gained 30 pounds of fat. Weight gain not due eating. I eat vegetables, proteins, complex carbohydrates that are all low glycemic. The weight gain was NOT due to diet. No sugar, no sugar drinks. The scale every week was going up a pound. I surrendered myself to the 30 pounds because I was sleeping better, not feeling as crazy, and stopped tremoring. 6 months went by and I found a different physician. He explained to me that ALL of the progesterone was turning into estrogen. Estrogen affects blood sugar by increasing insulin and also lowers thyroid function. Sugar increases in the blood and FAT STORES in the belly. It was tough!!! The dose of progesterone was lowered and was paired with chrysin. My progesterone and testosterone was low and estrogen was high. I stopped gaining weight immediately after the lower dose w/ progesterone and chrysin. Every few months I tried to lose weight and I'd feel crazy due to hormones releasing during weight loss. Sleep problems, anxiety, and feeling crazy. Then I started estrogen detoxification for 1.5 years SLOWLY every day, EVERY DAY and being mindful about diet no eating anything possibly estrogenic. No soy or pomegranates. The answer I’m going to give you today is ‘No, not completely.’ That may make some of you happy to hear! In fact, when it comes to the question “Does alcohol make you fat,” it’s not actually the alcohol that causes you the problems. There are 4 predominant issues that I cover in this video and below that actually cause you to gain weight if you drink often. Let’s dive on in and find out what they are! **Problem #1 - Blunted liver processing and metabolism When you drink alcohol, your body considers it a poison and focuses its efforts on metabolizing it before anything else. Because of this, the livers' job of metabolizing fat is severely blunted. Studies have shown that this process, necessary to stop your body from storing excess fat, can be affected by up to 75%! Also, when your liver is busy trying to metabolize alcohol, it gets severely depleted of your vitamin and mineral resource, especially B vitamins. One particular symptom of a lack of Vitamin B is tiredness. Think back to your last hangover – Now you probably understand why you felt so tired! **Problem #2 - Increased storage of fat from food and sugary drinks Building on top of weight gain and alcohol problem #1 comes the issue of fat being stored more readily due to the blunting of your liver function to metabolize fat. During times of drinking alcohol you should be more choosy about what you eat, opting for foods that are higher in Protein, but lower in Carbs and Fat. Even a meal that you would normally think of as healthy, such as salad, avocado, and salmon, could end up causing you to store more fat. This goes back to the blunting of the liver function and it is not being able to keep up with metabolizing the extra calories effectively. Your choice of drink will also be important, as anything that is sugary, like cocktails, will obviously be higher in Carbs than a straight drink like a vodka soda. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 65% of Americans are overweight or obese. Most experts say our sedentary lifestyle and excessive caloric intake are to blame. But we're also getting less sleep, and sleep deprivation is just coming to light as a factor associated with obesity. There are an ever-increasing number of studies finding a direct connection between sleep deprivation and weight gain. In a study involving 9,000 people between 1982 and 1984, researchers found that people who averaged 6 hours of sleep per night were 27% more likely to be overweight than their counterparts who slept 7-to-9 hours per night. Those averaging 5 hours of sleep per night were 73% more likely to be overweight. In a Harvard Nurses' Health Study, women who slept less than 5 hours per night were 30% more likely to gain at least 33 pounds over time, than women who slept 7 to 8 hours per night. Researchers measured growth hormone levels in 20yo men who were restricted to 6 hours of sleep per night. Growth hormone regulates both blood sugar and the body's proportion of fat to muscle. Without adequate sleep, the production of growth hormone goes down. The study concluded that sleep deprivation during your 20s can lead to a middle-age paunch later in life. The amount of sleep you get early in life can even affect your health when you get older. How does this happen? Inadequate sleep affects a hormone that regulates carbohydrate metabolism called leptin. When leptin levels are low, you crave carbohydrates which leads to a vicious cycle of more carbs, more insulin and a yo-yo affect on blood sugar levels. The end result is obesity and even pre-diabetes....and sometimes, even to full blow diabetes. So, can you lose weight while you sleep? It sounds like something you'd hear on a late night infomercial. But as wild as the idea sounds, substantial medical evidence suggests a fascinating link between getting adequate sleep, your hormones and your weight. What an ideal circumstance! Stress, hormones and weight gain connection. There is an important connection between stress, hormones and weight gain, which manifests itself in many forms. Besides eating the wrong kinds of food and lack of exercise, being permanently stressed will disrupt our hormone balance. Our bodies produce many different hormones to keep it in balance. However, physical stress is as important to address as emotional stress. When for example we take in a stimulant such as coffee or a cigarette (physical stressors), or react stressfully to a situation (emotional stress), the body produces the cortisol hormone in the adrenal glands which are located on top of the kidneys. Cortisol is often called the “stress hormone” due to the fact that it is being released in situations when we are under any sort of pressure or in a flight or fight mode. High cortisol levels contribute, among other symptoms to weight gain. In women, cortisol competes for receptor sites with an important female hormone, progesterone. So the net effect of being permanently in a stressed or stimulated state is less active progesterone. Since cortisol also increases the production of estrogen, prolonged stress can contribute to estrogen dominance. A situation where estrogen is the dominant hormone because there is not enough progesterone to complement it, may result in a variety of symptoms, including weight gain. Stress also upsets the balance of the male hormone, testosterone, which is made in the adrenal glands in men as well as women. In women, excess testosterone production can lead, among other symptoms to subsequent weight gain. On the other hand, research shows that in men, low testosterone levels will make them gain weight . Hormone imbalances brought on by the wrong kind of diet, unhealthy lifestyle and exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals, can lead to either an androgen (masculinising hormone) dominance or estrogen dominance. Excessive androgen levels are linked to fat gain in upper body and waist, while excessive estrogen levels are associated with lower body fat gain. Thus, apple-shaped people are more likely to be androgen dominant while pear-shaped people are more likely to be estrogen dominant. Either way, too much stress, sugar and stimulants are most definitely going to contribute to unwanted weight gain. Why do menopause and weight gain go hand in hand? On average women entering menopause gain around 15-20 pounds without changing their diet or exercise routine. Why do women gain weight without making any of these changes? The answer has to do with how menopause impacts the body but especially how it impacts your hormone system and how they impact your metabolism and body weight. There are several factors that come together to trigger weight gain in menopause women: #1. Genetic factors. You don't have control over your genetics but you can control your environment which impacts your genetics. #2. Hormone changes. This is perhaps the most important section because your hormones influence your metabolism and other hormone systems such as your thyroid. Menopause is associated with a rapid and abrupt decline in estrogen and progesterone. Testosterone follows closely behind these two hormones as well. It is the change in these hormones which triggers the symptoms associated with menopause and many of the other problems. #3. External variables. Lastly, other variables such as the amount that you exercise, the food that you eat, your medical conditions and the medications you are taking all play a role. If you are not eating healthy prior to menopause then you will probably gain more weight than most women. On the flip side, if you go into menopause eating a healthy diet then you have a better chance of reducing the amount that you gain during the menopause transition. So how can you treat the weight gain? The best way is to focus on the variables which cause the weight gain, to begin with. That means focusing on normalizing your hormones with the use of bio-identical hormones and by addressing your diet, exercise routine and so on. Symptoms of sleep apnea are gasping or choking sounds along with snoring. Sleep apnea may be the cause of your sleep deprivation and one of the causs of why you are gaining weight while you following a strict diet. The first rule of a good night’s sleep is to have no television or computers in the bedroom. We’ve seen that the "eat less, exercise more" model of weight loss has not worked. Dr. Jade Teta says the reason is because calories don't control metabolism, hormones do. How do you switch your mindset so you can design a diet that takes a hormones-first approach? Here are 5 important tips from Dr. Teta: 1) Think “fat loss”, not “weight loss”: There is more than one destination for a calorie. Decrease calories and you may lose fat, but you might lose muscle instead. Increase calories and perhaps you will gain fat, but you could alternatively gain muscle. The type of activity you do can determine which occurs. This is why weight training is so powerful in turning weight loss into fat loss.
