Mental illness has faced stigma and ridicule over the years, just like many other invisible illnesses. There are no physical systems, but they are just as real and sometimes debilitating as any other illness. Battling and conquering these mental disorders is sometimes a full time job on its own, so it’s truly an inspiration when we see athletes giving it their all. These athletes help to break the stereotypes surrounding mental disorders and illnesses either by sharing their own struggle or helping those with struggles of their own. Personally I don’t have asthma, so I did some research and asked my swimmer friends with asthma about this topic. Here is what I found. Welcome to skills n talents. If you don’t want to miss our next video about swimming endurance make sure to subscribe. Asthma affects a lot of people. Many of my teammates got into swimming because the doctor recommended the sport because of their asthma. It was found that in the 2008 about 25 percent of Olympic swimmers had verified asthma. In recent studies that I’ll link in the description they have studied the relationship between swimming and asthma. They indicate that swimming training is well-tolerated in children and adolescents with stable asthma, and increases lung function (moderate strength evidence) and cardio-pulmonary fitness (high strength evidence). If you are fit, asthma symptoms are less easily triggered than when you are unfit. But that comes with almost every sport. so why do doctors recommend swimming? Well, the symptoms are more likely to occur in dry cold weather and when the person overheats. So doctors hypothesized that warm humid conditions might reduce the risk of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and that swimming could help develop good breathing practices. However, on most studies I found they concluded that whether or not swimming is better than other forms of physical activity cannot be determined from their experiments . Further adequately powered trials with longer follow-up periods are needed to better assess the long-term benefits of swimming. However, as one of my friends with asthma told me “high levels of chlorine and enclosed swimming pools with inefficient air ventilation made training and competing extremely difficult.” From what I have gathered asthma needs to be treated on a case to case basis. “Be proactive and take asthma medications as directed to help prevent exercise-induced asthma symptoms. Keeping a quick-relief inhaler poolside is also advisable, in case you experience symptoms while swimming. Swimming is not a treatment for asthma, and medications should always be used as prescribed. Talk to your doctor before starting a new physical activity.” says Medical advisor: Shilpi Agarwal, M.D. But most importantly if you have asthma and love swimming remember that you can still reach high levels of competition. As four time olympic medalist Peter Vanderkaay said on an interview “Once I found the right long-term action plan, I was able to get where I am today. My doctor, parents, and I worked as a team so that I could continue training,” If you are looking for swimming workouts to develop your endurance we are offering exactly that. Our workouts are used by young swimmers and masters. I also do the workouts and they help me stay disciplined and motivated. Is Vaping Safe For People With Asthma? Asthma is becoming a huge drug industry. A money maker with little incentive for anyone to really do anything about. If you haven't seen it already you might want to check out this video on the Asthma lie: http://beatingasthma.space/ I was once diagnosed with light asthma, maybe in late 2007. Nothing too serious my doctor didn't even forbid me from smoking, as long as did not have more than four cigarettes a day, or it could get worse. (Inside Science TV) -- Most athletes who dope get away with it. It's estimated that up to a third of the athletes that we'll watch at the Olympics, will be dopers. And yet less than two percent of athletes were caught last year. So how do you dope and get away with it? If you're searching for strength, anabolic steroids will increase it, by up to forty percent. So they're popular, so popular that they account for two-thirds of doping violations. These molecules boost testosterone in your system, but then they show up in your blood and your urine. So that's what the anti-doping agency's test for. But they can only recognize chemical structures that they've seen before, not designer drugs with the same function, but unknown structures. When it comes to endurance, muscles need oxygen; oxygen carried by the blood. EPO and drugs like it, increase maximum blood oxygen by around seven percent. They up the production of red blood cells by the bone marrow. Now EPO can be detected in your urine, unless you microdose! This is a doping technique that works even mid-competition and it's simple. Take a speck of EPO, one ten-thousandth of a gram before you go to bed, and then drink a liter of water. By the time they can test you in the morning, the drug has broken down in your blood, and the water dilutes your urine, leaving no trace of the EPO. Nowadays, we've linked genes to almost all aspects of sport, to strength, to endurance, and even sporting mentality. Today's technology lets us modify genes, but it can't tell us if genes have been modified. Dopers are always ahead of the curve. These days we can test for almost all chemical doping, but not for gene doping. Now this is sports Wild West, it's dangerous, it's unknown, but the potential rewards are massive.

(Denver, CO) – Millions of young athletes experience a scary and potentially dangerous breathing disorder known as exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO). EILO, commonly misdiagnosed as asthma, is unresponsive to asthma medications. So doctors at National Jewish Health have developed new breathing techniques that are helping athletes control their EILO symptoms, even during high-intensity exercise when they tend to be most severe. “We found that if EILO patients can control and change the airflow through their mouth, they’re also able to control their throat,” said Tod Olin, MD, a pediatric pulmonologist at National Jewish Health who developed the exercises now known as the Olin EILOBI breathing techniques. “After teaching them these new techniques, 80 percent of patients reported them to be extremely helpful and two-thirds of patients were able to control their EILO symptoms by using them during exercise.” Dr. Olin developed the breathing exercises based on observations of patients’ airways during very intense exercise. He asks patients to pedal as fast as they can on a stationary bike while a small camera in their throat captures images of their vocal cords. In those with EILO, their vocal cords tighten and close the top of the airway, causing noisy, labored breathing. Patients spend several sessions learning to perform the techniques step-by-step. By mastering them, athletes are able to use these techniques when EILO symptoms strike, even if they’re out of breath and may be panicked. Dr. Olin says that’s what makes the new breathing techniques so helpful when traditional EILO exercises fall short. “Some of the traditional techniques that we use for EILO simply can’t be performed during high-intensity exercise.” he said. “Specifically when patients are asked to inhale through their nose, it’s simply not something you can do if you’re running as fast as you can.”
