What Are Generic, Descriptive, Suggestive, Arbitrary, Fanciful Trademarks? | Trademark Factory® FAQ
What Are Generic, Descriptive, Suggestive, Arbitrary, Fanciful Trademarks? Secure Your Brand with Trademark Factory® Risk-Free, Guaranteed. https://www.trademarkfactory.com There are 5 degrees how trademarks are measured in terms of their strength. Some of them are registrable, and some of them are not. So let’s go from the least registrable towards most registrable. Least registrable trademarks are generic trademarks. So basically, a trademark that is simply the common name for the product or the service is called generic. So If I am selling pens, the word “Pen” would be generic if somebody wanted to trademark that. Or phones, so if I want to trademark the word “Phone” if I am selling phones, I’d be denied because it is generic. If I am selling cars I can’t trademark the word “Car.” If I am selling the trademarking services, I can’t register the phrase “Trademarking services”, or just “Trademarking,” or “Trademark.” Slightly above that are descriptive trademarks. Descriptive trademarks are more than just naming the product but they do nothing more than tell the market about certain characteristics, or features, or benefits of your product or service. So if you’re selling printers, you can’t trademark the word “Color,” because that’s the feature of your printers. Or if you’re selling accounting services, “Timely Accounting Services” would be a descriptive trademark. It is not generic—it would be generic, if it had been simply “Accounting,”—because you’re adding something to it, but what you’re adding is only a description of the characteristic of your product or service. So “Timely Accounting Services” or “Pure Gold Bracelets”... Again, the name of the product is “Bracelets”—it’s generic; “Gold”—that’s descriptive; “Pure Gold”—still descriptive. Above that there are suggestive marks. Suggestive marks are those that give the customer some idea about your product or service, but they don’t just describe a main feature, or main characteristic, or one of the main features or characteristics, in a way that adds nothing to the trademark in terms of identity. So the good example here would be “Trademark Factory®”. When you hear the phrase “Trademark Factory”, you know that what we offer is trademarking services, but really, the word “Factory” does not tell you exactly how we are different from others, how are we better than others, it doesn’t tell you anything except that in some shape or form, we offer trademarking services. That’s a suggestive mark. Above that, there are arbitrary marks. They use dictionary words that have nothing to do with the product or the service. And the best example here is “Apple.” Apple is not in the business of selling apples, otherwise it would have been a generic mark. But they use the word “Apple” to sell computers and phones and software. And none of this has anything to do with apples. So they use a dictionary word in connection with unrelated products and services, thus making it an arbitrary mark. And finally there are fanciful trademarks. When you come up with a word that did not exist, that means nothing, it’s not in the dictionary and you just came up with that name and thought it would be a great name for a product or a service, and you give it that name—and it’s also very trademarkable. A good example for that would be—and there are so many of them—and something tells me, if I come up with a name as an example, I would get some comments that actually this means something in some other language, but I’m still going to give it a try. And if I’m wrong with an example, you’re welcome to post your comments and correct me, but you’ll still get the point. So for example, “Sony” or “Yamaha”. This means nothing, at least in English. Some of the most famous fanciful trademarks are Xerox, Kodak, and Exxon. Some other good words that used to be fanciful marks are “Escalator”, “Aspirin,” and “Linoleum.” They used to be fanciful marks that mean nothing, that did not exist, but now they are generic marks or very close to generic marks in case of Aspirin. Somebody came up with a name, they gave this name to a product. But they became so prevalent on the marketplace that people started using those names as generic names. Google is another good example of a trademark that may be on its way to becoming generic. ----------------------------------- Trademark Factory® resources: ★ Website: https://trademarkfactory.com ★ ☆ YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/trademarkfactory.com ☆ ★ Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/thetrademarkfactory ★ ☆ Twitter: https://twitter.com/realTMfactory ☆ ★ Kick-Ass Brands Show: http://kickassbrandsshow.com ★ ☆ Kick-Ass Brands Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/kickassbrands ☆

What is GENERIC TRADEMARK? What does GENERIC TRADEMARK mean? GENERIC TRADEMARK meaning - GENERIC TRADEMARK definition - GENERIC TRADEMARK explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A generic trademark, also known as a genericized trademark or proprietary eponym, is a trademark or brand name that has become the generic name for, or synonymous with, a general class of product or service, usually against the intentions of the trademark's holder. A trademark is said to become genericized when it begins as a distinctive product identifier but changes in meaning to become generic. This typically happens when the products or services with which the trademark is associated have acquired substantial market dominance or mind share, such that the primary meaning of the genericized trademark becomes the product or service itself rather than an indication of source for the product or service. A trademark thus popularized has its legal protection at risk in some countries such as the United States and United Kingdom, as its intellectual property rights in the trademark may be lost and competitors enabled to use the genericized trademark to describe their similar products, unless the owner of an affected trademark works sufficiently to correct and prevent such broad use. Aspirin, heroin, and thermos are examples of trademarks that have become genericized in the US. Genericization or "loss of secondary meaning" may be either among the general population or among just a subpopulation, for example, people who work in a particular industry. Some examples of the latter type from the vocabulary of physicians include the names Luer-Lok (Luer lock), Phoroptor (phoropter), and Port-a-Cath (portacath), which have genericized mind share (among physicians) because (1) the users may not realize that the term is a brand name rather than a medical eponym or generic-etymology term, and (2) no alternative generic name for the idea readily comes to mind. Most often, genericization occurs because of heavy advertising that fails to provide an alternative generic name or that uses the trademark in similar fashion to generic terms. Thus, when the Otis Elevator Company advertised that it offered "the latest in elevator and escalator design," it was using the well-known generic term "elevator" and Otis's trademark "Escalator" for moving staircases in the same way. The Trademark Office and the courts concluded that, if Otis used their trademark in that generic way, they could not stop Westinghouse from calling its moving staircases "escalators", and a valuable trademark was lost through genericization. The pharmaceutical industry affords some protection from genericization of trade names due to the modern practice of assigning a nonproprietary name for a drug based upon chemical structure. Brand-name drugs have well-known nonproprietary names from the beginning of their commercial existence, even while still under patent, preventing the aforementioned problem of "no alternative generic name for the idea readily comes to mind". For example, even when Lipitor was new, its nonproprietary name, atorvastatin, was well known. Examples of genericization before the modern system of generic drugs include aspirin, introduced to the market in 1897, and heroin, introduced in 1898; both were originally trademarks of Bayer AG. U.S. court rulings in 1918 and 1921 found the term to be genericized, stating the company's failure to reinforce the brand's connection with their product as the reason. Bayer's involvement in the Great Phenol Plot during World War I, and subsequently the U.S. declaration of war on Germany, were also involved in the case of aspirin and heroin. A different sense of the word genericized in the pharmaceutical industry refers to products whose patent protection has expired. For example, Lipitor was genericized in the U.S. when the first competing generic version was approved by the FDA in November 2011. In this same context, the term genericization refers to the process of a brand drug losing market exclusivity to generics.

10 “Generic” Product Names You Didn’t Realize Were TRADEMARKS
Check out our New Biography Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics A trademark usually presents itself in the form of a name, a logo, a design, or a phrase, with the purpose of distinguishing one manufacturer’s products from another. Sometimes, however, when business is really good for a particular brand, or it has a head start over the competition, then that particular brand might just become a proprietary eponym, or generic trademark. This means that if a product develops a substantial market share over the other manufacturers, or it becomes well ingrained into the public consciousness, then its brand could replace the name for the entire industry. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 Help us translate our videos: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_queue?msg=10&tab=0 - Learn more why you might want to help: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6052538 Find more lists at: http://www.toptenz.net Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet! What is A Generic Trademark? | Trademark Attorney in Dallas TX Explains
Find me online at https://trademarkdoctor.net Let’s suppose you had a fruit cart, and you sold apples. Could you buy the url “applecart.com” and then register “applecart.com” as a trademark in an effort to prevent a competitor from using a confusingly-similar term on their own apple cart? In short, no. In general, trademark law doesn’t allow anyone to claim as a trademark any term that is “generic.” What is a “generic” term? It’s anything that is the name for the product or service that is the subject of the claimed trademark. For example, I can’t register the term “car” for automobiles, because it’s generic; the mark sought to be registered is the name for the goods in the trademark. The reason why generic terms can’t serve as trademarks is twofold: 1) Generic marks are not distinctive. The purpose of a trademark is to distinguish your goods and services from those of another company. When the proposed trademark is the name of the “thing” it’s not at all distinctive of the source of the goods, it’s just the common name for the goods. That does not distinguish the goods as coming from your company versus coming from another company, thus the term fails to function as a trademark. 2) The grant of a trademark registration to one company necessarily prevents others from using that term with those goods, so it would prevent others from fairly describing their goods and services. A trademark grants to the owner the exclusive right to use that mark in commerce with those goods or “related goods.” If we were to grant one company the trademark CAR for automobiles, it would necessarily prevent other automobile makers from saying that they, too, manufacture cars. Marks can, through improper use, become generic when (paradoxically) the trademark becomes so famous that consumers start calling the goods that are the subject of the trademark by the trademark itself. This is how Otis Escalator Company lost the trademark for ESCALATOR, and ASPIRIN, ZIPPER, and CELLOPHANE suffered a similar fate. Because of this, many famous brands are vigilant about calling their products things like “Kleenex brand facial tissue,” or “Band-Aid brand bandages.” It’s important to realize that the question of whether a mark is “generic” is always analyzed in the context of the goods and services. While the mark APPLE is generic for a fruit cart that sells apples, the mark APPLE is distinctive for use on electronics. This is because in the first instance, the mark is the word for the goods, and in the second instance, the mark is distinctive for the goods, and lacking any qualities that would tend to describe the goods. They extend Java's type system to allow “a type or method to operate on objects of various types while providing compile-time type safety.” In particular, the Java collections framework supports generics to specify the type of objects stored in a collection instance. In 1998, Gilad Bracha, Martin Odersky, David Stoutamire and Philip Wadler created Generic Java, an extension to the Java language to support generic types. Generic Java was incorporated in Java with the addition of wildcards. Hierarchy and classification According to Java Language Specification: A type variable is an unqualified identifier. Type variables are introduced by generic class declarations, generic interface declarations, generic method declarations, and by generic constructor declarations. A class is generic if it declares one or more type variables. These type variables are known as the type parameters of the class. It defines one or more type variables that act as parameters. A generic class declaration defines a set of parameterized types, one for each possible invocation of the type parameter section. All of these parameterized types share the same class at runtime. An interface is generic if it declares one or more type variables. These type variables are known as the type parameters of the interface. It defines one or more type variables that act as parameters. A generic interface declaration defines a set of types, one for each possible invocation of the type parameter section. All parameterized types share the same interface at runtime. A method is generic if it declares one or more type variables. These type variables are known as the formal type parameters of the method. The form of the formal type parameter list is identical to a type parameter list of a class or interface. A constructor can be declared as generic, independently of whether the class that the constructor is declared in is itself generic. A constructor is generic if it declares one or more type variables. These type variables are known as the formal type parameters of the constructor. The form of the formal type parameter list is identical to a type parameter list of a generic class or interface. Type wildcards A type argument for a parameterized type is not limited to a concrete class or interface. Java allows the use of type wildcards to serve as type arguments for parameterized types. Wildcards are type arguments in the form "?", possibly with an upper or lower bound. Given that the exact type represented by a wildcard is unknown, restrictions are placed on the type of methods that may be called on an object which uses parameterized types. A generic type is a generic class or interface that is parameterized over types. Java Generics ? , E and T what is the difference? Well there's no difference between the first two - they're just using different names for the type parameter (E or T). The third isn't a valid declaration - ? is used as a wildcard which is used when providing a type argument

Docker Tutorial - What is Docker & Docker Containers, Images, etc?
Docker tutorial for beginners - part 1: Free Digital Ocean Credit! http://webdev.willstern.com/digitalocean Docker is amazing, and it doesn't have to be difficult to understand. In these tutorials, I'll be breaking down exactly what a Docker container is and how to use it. I've found a lot of Docker container tutorials on the web, but I still hear from developers that it's hard to grasp exactly what Docker is and how to work with Docker images & containers. In this video, I'll compare Docker to Vagrant and explain the differences, then in the next video, we'll do our first miniature deployment with Docker by creating a Digital Ocean machine with Docker installed and then running a Docker web server container on the machine. Later on, we'll get into docker machine, docker compose (fig) and a whole mess of other fun tooling. Next up: how to run your first Docker web server - http://youtu.be/JBtWxj9l7zM High-Availability Docker #1: https://youtu.be/wxUxtflalE4 - Cluster computing - CoreOS is our solution here. CoreOS allows us to make an expandable cluster of computers so we can add more computers should our application need more power to scale. CoreOS also allows us to run services on any machine in the cluster and they can all communicate with each other. High-Availability Docker #2: https://youtu.be/top0MlcKSw4 - Scheduling: we shouldn't manually choose which app runs on which machine - this idea doesn't work at scale. Fleet will be our scheduler that decides where our apps/services run. If a CoreOS machine goes down, fleet will reschedule any services that it was running onto a new machine. High-Availability Docker #3: https://youtu.be/1zJ8FfC-gmU - Service Registration Since we never know what ip address or port a service will be running on, we need to register that service so other services can find it and communicate with it. We'll use Etcd and Flannel for this High-Availability Docker #4: https://youtu.be/R39VRocQtrQ - Service Discovery: Now that services have registered, we can discover them and load balance between them with a generic docker nginx container High-Availability Docker #5: https://youtu.be/4215szNHlC4 - Public DNS: Once the app is working, we need a fixed way for the outside world to access it. We'll use Nginx and Confd for this. Confd will watch Etcd for service registration and when services come/go, it will build a new configuration file for Nginx and reload Nginx. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Learning Web Development? What is GENERIC PROGRAMMING? What does GENERIC PROGRAMMING mean? GENERIC PROGRAMMING meaning - GENERIC PROGRAMMING definition - GENERIC PROGRAMMING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. In the simplest definition, generic programming is a style of computer programming in which algorithms are written in terms of types to-be-specified-later that are then instantiated when needed for specific types provided as parameters. This approach, pioneered by ML in 1973, permits writing common functions or types that differ only in the set of types on which they operate when used, thus reducing duplication. Such software entities are known as generics in Ada, Delphi, Eiffel, Java, C#, F#, Objective-C, Swift, and Visual Basic .NET; parametric polymorphism in ML, Scala, Haskell (the Haskell community also uses the term "generic" for a related but somewhat different concept) and Julia; templates in C++ and D; and parameterized types in the influential 1994 book Design Patterns. The authors of Design Patterns note that this technique, especially when combined with delegation, is very powerful but that ", highly parameterized software is harder to understand than more static software." The term generic programming was originally coined by David Musser and Alexander Stepanov in a more specific sense than the above, to describe a programming paradigm whereby fundamental requirements on types are abstracted from across concrete examples of algorithms and data structures and formalised as concepts, with generic functions implemented in terms of these concepts, typically using language genericity mechanisms as described above.

Trademark Explained - Intellectual Property Law | Lex Animata | Hesham Elrafei
What is Trademark law? By Hesham Elrafei https://www.linkedin.com/in/heshamelrafei Trademarks are brand names or designs , which are applied to products and services. A trademark is a distinguished word, phrase , a symbol , a fragrance or a logo , or a combination of these elements. which is used in trade/business , to indicate the origin/source of the brand, in order to distinguish and identify the brand owner in the market. Trademark law protects the consumer, by preventing the public confusion , as to the origin or quality of a product. and it also reward the brand owner , by maintaining his business successful reputation in the market. Trademarks legally conflict with each other, if the use of one trademark causes public confusion as to the product being offered in the market ( likelihood of confusion ) The american law protects trademarks even if its not registered, which is also known as the Common Law Trademark Rights, in this case registration is not required to establish trademark rights, seeing that the first who use a trademark in commerce owns it. On the other hand, Most countries require registration of a trademark , as it provides legal certainty and reinforces the position of the right holder . therefore any subsequent users who cause confusion as to the product or its origin , will be forced to stop using the mark , and might be liable to pay the trademark owner damages. Lastly, Trademark is not absolute as its subject to various limits and defenses, such as abandonment, limitations on geographic area in which the mark is used , and fair use , which means that the more common and generic the word is , the less likely the trademark owner may be able to regulate it. This doctrine also protects "nominative" use of the trademark name, as is often done by competitors in marketing materials.

What is PROCUREMENT? What does PROCUREMENT mean? PROCUREMENT meaning, definition & explanation
What is PROCUREMENT? What does PROCUREMENT mean? PROCUREMENT meaning - PROCUREMENT pronunciation - PROCUREMENT definition - PROCUREMENT explanation - How to pronounce PROCUREMENT? Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Procurement is the act of finding, acquiring, buying goods, services or works from an external source, often via a tendering or competitive bidding process. The process is used to ensure the buyer receives goods, services or works the best possible price, when aspects such as quality, quantity, time, and location are compared. Corporations and public bodies often define processes intended to promote fair and open competition for their business while minimizing risk, such as exposure to fraud and collusion. Almost all purchasing decisions include factors such as delivery and handling, marginal benefit, and price fluctuations. Procurement generally involves making buying decisions under conditions of scarcity. If good data is available, it is good practice to make use of economic analysis methods such as cost-benefit analysis or cost-utility analysis. An important distinction should be made between analyses without risk and those with risk. Where risk is involved, either in the costs or the benefits, the concept of best value should be employed. Procurement activities are often split into two distinct categories, direct and indirect spend. Direct spend refers to production-related procurement that encompasses all items that are part of finished products, such as raw material, components and parts. The first category being direct, production-related procurement and the second being indirect, non-production-related procurement. Direct procurement, which is the focus in supply chain management, directly affects the production process of manufacturing firms. In contrast, indirect procurement activities concern “operating resources” that a company purchases to enable its operations. Indirect procurement comprises a wide variety of goods and services, from standardized items like office supplies and machine lubricants to complex and costly products and services;, like heavy equipment, consulting services, and outsourcing services. Procurement is one component of the broader concept of sourcing and acquisition. Typically procurement is viewed as more tactical in nature (the process of physically buying a product or service) and sourcing and acquisition are viewed as more strategic and encompassing. The Institute of Supply Management defines strategic sourcing as the process of identifying sources that could provide needed products or services for the acquiring organization. The term procurement used to reflect the entire purchasing process or cycle, and not just the tactical components. ISM defines procurement as an organizational function that includes specifications development, value analysis, supplier market research, negotiation, buying activities, contract administration, inventory control, traffic, receiving and stores. Purchasing refers to the major function of an organization that is responsible for acquisition of required materials, services and equipment. The United States Defense Acquisition University (DAU) defines procurement as the act of buying goods and services for the government. DAU defines acquisition as the conceptualization, initiation, design, development, test, contracting, production, deployment, Logistics Support (LS), modification, and disposal of weapons and other systems, supplies, or services (including construction) to satisfy Department of Defense needs, intended for use in or in support of military missions. Acquisition and sourcing are therefore much wider concepts than procurement. Multiple sourcing business models exist, and acquisition models exist.

How to do an Irish Accent
In this video, we're going to learn how to speak an Irish accent. Whenever you're learning a new accent, it helps to isolate sounds that are specific to that accent. So as we play with these sounds, I encourage you to pause the video and practice these words out loud. They may feel strange at first, but they become beautiful once you live in them a little. The first major sound within the Irish accent that gives it a wonderful jumping off place, is the Irish I. In an Irish accent, it is less, I and more Oi (as in oil). Start first, just getting the sense of it, and then gradually understate it. Part 1: Sounds I height sight plight right Ireland Practice sentence: Fortune smiled upon him in Ireland. It’s not quite the right shade of blue. I’ll be having some of that oil. Next, we have our R sounds. In an Irish accent, the R’s are certainly pronounced. Park start Garden Work Hard Earth worth Practice sentence: You’re such a hard worker. What on earth are you doing? When do you start school? Our next sound is the shift from Ow to EHW. Mouth hour sour Flower down Round pound sound how Practice sentence: We don’t have to go to work for another hour. Lemons are sour. Flowers grow in the garden. The phrases tend to have a up and down sort of dreamy lilt to them. Don’t take it so personal. And that was the sort of this he wanted to tell me ya’ see. Would you care to go out? Sure, and that’ll be the end of it. Longer practice phrases Wait till I tell ya’s what I read in the paper. I never heard the like in me life! Like I says to ya’s. That’s really very true. And sure you’ll be after knowing the truth of it, somewhere along the road anyways. It’s not a date the way you’re thinking and I’m done telling ya. End of discussion.

What is Brand Equity?
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Brand Equity”. Brand equity is a phrase used in the marketing industry which describes the value of having a well-known brand name, based on the idea that the owner of a well-known brand name can generate more money from products with that brand name than from products with a less well-known name. One situation when brand equity is important is when a company wants to expand its product line. If the brand's equity is positive, the company can increase the likelihood that customers will buy its new product by associating the new product with an existing, successful brand. For example, if Campbell's releases a new soup, it would likely keep it under the same brand name, rather than inventing a new brand. The positive associations customers already have with Campbell's would make the new product more enticing than if the soup had an unfamiliar brand name. Companies can create brand equity for their products by making them memorable, easily recognizable and superior in quality and reliability. Mass marketing campaigns can also help to create brand equity. If consumers are willing to pay more for a generic product than for a branded one, however, the brand is said to have negative brand equity. This might happen if a company had a major product recall or caused a widely publicized environmental disaster. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy

CppCon 2017: Fedor Pikus “C++ atomics, from basic to advanced. What do they really do?”
http://CppCon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/CppCon/CppCon2017 — C++11 introduced atomic operations. They allowed C++ programmers to express a lot of control over how memory is used in concurrent programs and made portable lock-free concurrency possible. They also allowed programmers to ask a lot of questions about how memory is used in concurrent programs and made a lot of subtle bugs possible. This talk analyzes C++ atomic features from two distinct points of view: what do they allow the programmer to express? what do they really do? The programmer always has two audiences: the people who will read the code, and the compilers and machines which will execute it. This distinction is, unfortunately, often missed. For lock-free programming, the difference between the two viewpoints is of particular importance: every time an explicit atomic operation is present, the programmer is saying to the reader of the program "pay attention, something very unusual is going on here." Do we have the tools in the language to precisely describe what is going on and in what way it is unusual? At the same time, the programmer is saying to the compiler and the hardware "this needs to be done exactly as I say, and with maximum efficiency since I went to all this trouble." This talk starts from the basics, inasmuch as this term can be applied to lock-free programming. We then explore how the C++ lock-free constructs are used to express programmer's intent clearly (and when they get in the way of clarity). Of course, there will be code to look at and to be confused by. At the same time, we never lose track of the fact that the atomics are one of the last resorts of efficiency, and the question of what happens in hardware and how fast does it happen is of paramount importance. Of course, the first rule of performance — "never guess about performance!" — applies, and any claim about speed must be supported by benchmarks. If you never used C++ atomics but want to learn, this is the talk for you. If you think you know C++ atomics but are unclear on few details, come to fill these few gaps in your knowledge. If you really do know C++ atomics, come to feel good (or to be surprised, and then feel even better). — Fedor Pikus: Mentor Graphics - Siemens business, Chief Scientist Fedor G Pikus is a Chief Engineering Scientist in the Design to Silicon division of Mentor Graphics Corp. Internet Change Makes Way for Dot-Anything
This is the VOA Special English Technology Report , from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish A top-level domain is the part of an Internet address after the dot. The most common of what are called generic top-level domains are dot-com, dot-net and dot-org. There are twenty-two generic top-level domain names currently available. But get ready for many, many more. The international organization that controls these names will begin accepting applications for new ones in January. This will open the door to dot-just-about-anything. Brad White is with ICANN, the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. He says: "What we're talking about doing with the new generic top-level domain program is blowing the lid off that ceiling of twenty two. The interest is there to expand that. We no longer have to keep this to twenty-two. It can be almost any word combination. It can be in non-Latin characters, which is extremely important if you happen to speak Russian because of the Cyrillic alphabet, or Arabic, or Chinese." ICANN officials met in October in Dakar, Senegal. Brad White says they discussed the new program for what are known as gTLDs. "This marks one of the biggest changes in the Internet's domain name system, the addressing system of the Internet, that has ever occurred. We want to make sure that the process of getting these gTLDs into the Internet's root is methodical, careful and thoughtful." Anyone can apply, including businesses, governments and individuals. The cost of a new name: one hundred eighty-five thousand dollars. Mr. White says: "That's the cost that we've determined that is necessary to make sure that the applicant has the technical savvy to run an Internet registry, that there is no intellectual property or trademark problems, so on and so forth. But that hundred and eighty-five thousand is miniscule compared to the cost of actually operating an Internet registry." In Dakar, ICANN passed a resolution to consider creating a support system to help rising economies with limited financial resources. For example, ICANN says Africa represented less than twelve percent of Internet growth worldwide in the last ten years. But Mr. White says that is slowly beginning to change. ICANN will accept applications from January twelfth to April twelfth. It could take up to a year for new names to become active. ICANN says it will approve no more than one thousand new generic top-level domains each year. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 07Nov2011)

How to Not Get SUED When Dropshipping (w/ Aliexpress & Shopify)
Afraid of getting sued when dropshipping? Watch this video! ►► FREE - How to Make $10,000/Month: http://wholesaleted.com/4-step ►► How to Dropship from Aliexpress: https://youtu.be/2CWrd2gdTIs PLEASE NOTE: We are not lawyers, and this is not legal advice. For legal advice, please contact a lawyer. Question 1: Will you get sued if you use product images from Aliexpress suppliers? The answer to this is almost certainly no. In China, the culture around copyright is very different to the western world. In China, the culture around copyright is that if something can be easily copied and can benefit others, then that is more important than protecting the rights of a single individual. It is a cultural difference. As a result, it’s very easy to get away with piracy in China, which is why pirated movies/music/games are sold freely on the streets. In fact, Chinese manufacturers copy each other all the time. Not only do they produce the same products, they steal images from each other. If you go to Aliexpress you will see that different manufacturers are producing the same items, and they are using the same images. As a result, it is extremely unlikely that any Aliexpress supplier would try to pursue you in court for any copyright issues. If they were going to sue anyone - it would be the manufacturers that are copying them - although due to the cultural differences, that is also extremely unlikely. If you’re still worried, you can contact the Aliexpress suppliers and ask them if they are OK with you reusing their images. Question 2: How Can I Avoid Being Sued for Copyright Images? They might not care in China if you copy images - but in the west, they sure do! Even if your website is not making any money, you can still be pursued legally and sued for using images without permission - so it’s very important that you don’t use copyrighted images on your website! A good place to find images you can use is with Google Images: 1) Go to Google Images 2) Click settings. 3) Click advanced search. 4) Type in what you’re searching for. 5) Scroll down to usage rights. Select “free to use, share or modify, even commercially.” 6) Click search. You’ll be surprised at how many images you’re allowed to use! So don’t get lazy and use images that are copyrighted. Use Google to find free images you’re allowed to use. Question 3: Can I Sell Aliexpress Products that are Trademarked? No - do NOT sell products that are trademarked. For example, in the video, Sarah compares two items - one that is a generic self-stir mug, and one that is a self-stir mug with Harry Potter imagery on it. Do NOT sell the Harry Potter mug, as it is illegal. If you sell products with trademarks, you aren’t just risking getting sued - you’re risking having legal action taken against you.
