Triple Negative Breast Cancer: What you need to know
We teach you why Triple Negative Breast Cancer is threatening. Learn how it is treated, and it's link to the BRCA genetic mutation. VISIT THE BREAST CANCER SCHOOL FOR PATIENTS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org LIST OF QUESTIONS FOR YOUR DOCTORS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org/breast-health-updates-latest-videos/ FOLLOW US: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Breast-Cancer-School-for-Patients-958519147618444/ _________________________ Questions for your Breast Surgeon and Medical Oncologist: 1. What exactly is triple negative breast cancer? 2. Will I need Chemotherapy? 3. What are the benefits of Neoadjuvant Chemo? 4. Isn’t Neoadjuvant Chemo recommended more now? 5. Do I qualify for BRCA genetic testing? 6. Should I consider a Clinical Trial? 7. What is “Triple Negative” breast cancer? “Triple Negative” breast cancers are fast growing tumors that more frequently spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body. Because of this, they are a bigger threat to your life than most other types of cancers of similar size with a different receptor pattern. These cancers are called “triple negative” because the three most important breast cancer “receptors” on the surface of the cells are not present (negative). When present, these receptors are used as targets to attack the cancer with medications. When absent, the main medical therapy is chemotherapy. Your Breast Surgeon will know your “receptor pattern” within days after your initial breast biopsy. These results are often not communicated to you early on in your decision process. Although only 15% of breast cancers are “triple negative,” it is imperative that you specifically ask your surgeon immediately, and well before surgery, “What are my receptor results?” “Triple Negative” is treated with Chemotherapy These cancers are often sensitive to chemotherapy and it is offered to almost everyone healthy enough to tolerate it. Chemotherapy is obviously a more intense cancer treatment than hormonal therapy (pills). But unfortunately, since triple negative cancers do not have “Estrogen receptors” (ER negative), hormonal therapy is not helpful at all. The time to cure triple negative cancer is now, not when it recurs later. Chemotherapy and surgery is the standard for treating triple negative breast cancer. Ask about the benefits of “Neoadjuvant Chemo” What is often overlooked are the benefits of offering neoadjuvant chemotherapy for patients with triple negative, “Early-Stage” (I & II) breast cancer. There may be distinct advantages (listed below) to having chemotherapy before surgery, not after surgery if you have a triple negative tumor. The decision to consider neoadjuvant chemotherapy always begins with your breast surgeon. You must address this “cutting edge” treatment option well before surgery to benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Do not be afraid to ask. This is a very important question. The Potential Benefits of Neoadjuvant Chemo: *Begin life-saving chemotherapy earlier *Reduce the need for a mastectomy *Improve cosmetic outcomes with a lumpectomy *Reduce the need for an “Axillary Dissection” *Allows more time for BRCA genetic testing *More time to think about “lumpectomy vs. mastectomy” *Shows your cancer team if the chemo is working *Can sometimes eliminate all cancer cells before surgery *May reduce the need for radiation after a mastectomy Ask for BRCA Genetic Testing Triple negative breast cancers can be associated with inherited genetic mutations. Any woman who has ever been diagnosed with a triple negative breast cancer at age 60 or younger is at a high risk for carrying the BRCA mutation. If you also have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer you are at an even higher risk. Unfortunately, genetic testing is often not offered for triple negative breast cancer patients. It is important to ask for BRCA Genetic Testing in this situation. The BRCA (Breast Cancer) gene is commonly referred to as “The Breast Cancer Gene.” If someone inherits a broken version (mutation) of this gene at conception, they carry a very high lifetime risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. African Americans are a higher risk for Triple Negative African American and women of West African descent are at a higher risk of developing triple negative breast cancers than most other ethnic groups. Thirty percent (30%) of all breast cancers in this group are triple negative. Younger women are at a higher risk for Triple Negative Women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer before 40 are at a higher risk for having triple negative disease when compared to older women. Any women diagnosed before the age of 50 qualifies for genetic testing and should consider genetic counseling. Ask if you would benefit from a Clinical Trial New therapies must be studied in clinical trials to make sure they are safe and effective at treating breast cancer. Ask your medical oncologist if they offer or recommend you participate in a clinical trial.

Top 10 Countries With The Highest Cancer Rates In The World 2016/2017
Top 10 Countries With The Highest Cancer Rates In The World 2016/2017 Cancer is a disease that will all dread and wish never to have. Some people even prefer Hiv/Aids to cancer because with Hiv/Aids you can live with it for over 30 years but with cancer that isn’t the case. Cancer has spread across the world especially in the West. Cancer is very deadly as it weakens the body’s immune system hence making the infected person susceptible to other diseases. By 2008 there were 12.7 million cancer patients in the world, out of this 6.1 million were women and the rest were men. This clearly shows how cancer is spreading at a fast rate. There are different types of cancers in the world, they are usually named according to the place they infect. Of all the common cancers in the world, lung cancer is the most prevalent. It is followed closely with breast cancer and then followed by prostate cancer. Cancer is very severe, it is predicted that by 2030, the number of cancer patients in the world will be at 21 million. 10. CZECH REPUBLIC: This magnificent country called the Czech Republic is on number ten as per this list. The cancer that is most prevalent in the Czech Republic is the skin cancer commonly called the melanoma. Out of a population of a hundred thousand Czech Republic citizens, 648 are usually women who are infected with the disease and 736 are also mean who are infected with the disease. If you calculate this, you will find the rate at which people die because of skin cancer in Czech Republic is at a rate of 263 deaths per one hundred thousand. Prostate, lung and breast cancer are also very common in the Czech Republic. 9. CANADA: Canada is a first world country and as stated on the introduction, 1st world countries are the countries with the most cancer cases. Canada suffers from high mortality and cancer rates. The major reason for this that there is slow diagnosis of cancer cases and also most of the Canadian is aging. Though the mortality rate is increasing due to cancer, the Canadian government is taking measures to curb this. 8. NORWAY By the 2012, the total number of cancer cases in Norway was reported to be at 30.99. The most common types of cancers affecting Norwegians is prostate, breast, colon and lung cancers. The cases are usually reported on people above 70 years. 7. BELGIUM By the 1954, breast cancer rates were already being monitored in Belgium. Breast cancer is the most cancer in Belgium. The rate at which breast cancer is becoming more common in Belgium has made the government to take measures to curb it. it most affects age gaps of 35 to 69 years. 6. UNITED STATES The total number of cancer cases and deaths in USA by the end of 2015 was 589,480. This number is quite high due to the imbalanced nature of the American lifestyle, many Americans smoke and also consume large quantities of alcohol. This has caused the USA government to increase the number of medical facilities that can treat cancer patients. 5. NEW ZEALAND The Kiwis are intelligent and educate people but cancer is very common in New Zealand. This has raised many eyebrows in New Zealand. The type of cancer that is most common is breast cancers as around 3000 women are infected with the disease. 4.FRANCE The cause of cancer prognosis in France is due to dietary supplements that are very popular in France. 29% of the French men are suffering from cancer and 2% of the women are also suffering from it. The other causes of cancer are alcohol consumption and smoking. 3.AUSTRALIA The number of cases that are reported annually in Australia are 126800 cases and this number is expected to increase by fifty thousand by the year 2020. Cancer is the causes more deaths in Australia than any other disease. Due to most people in Australia being of old age, the number of cancer cases has always been high. Breast and lung cancer are the most common cancers in Australia. 2. IRELAND This is one country that has the 2nd highest cancer cases in the world but the causes for the high cancer rates isn’t due to lifestyle causes but majorly due to genetic factors. 1. DENMARK It is commonly referred as the cancer capital. In Denmark, in a thousand people, 326 people are suffering from cancer. The major reason for this high prevalence of cancer in Denmark is die to most of the women in Denmark are smokers and consume alcohol in large amounts. Ep 06 - Benin, Nigeria - Cancer Awareness
During our activities in the rural communities, the volunteers distribute simple printed materials explaining how to self examine the breast and what changes to look out for. Due to language differences we sometimes publicly demonstrate how this is done, through an interpreter. In each community we work along side the local health centers, this allows us to transfer knowledge and develop continuity with the Nurses and Doctors. While the medical teams are examining the women in the private rooms, they explain to each woman to repeat the examination and note any observation. One of the biggest challenges in rural Africa is the absence of accurate data, so we gather information through questionnaires.

NGO gives Nigerian cancer patients second chance at life
A pro-cancer not-for-profit, Project PINK BLUE, is on a journey to change the way Africans think about cancer. PINK BLUE - a health and psychological trust centre, is a cancer organization engaged in cancer awareness, free cancer screenings, support to people battling with cancer, patient navigation, advocacy, fundraising for cancer patients, cancer research and psychological support. The outreach passionately reaches the hard-to-reach communities, touches the rural areas, slides the hinterlands and connects the urban with cancer patients; while revolutionizing Nigeria’s health sector. At the National Health Dialogue which held in Abuja on Friday, the cancer-centred non-profit pitched cancer survivors it had supported to attain remission or total defeat of the dreaded disease. Project Pink Blue is driven by reason and logic, not just passion and emotion to reduce the incidence of cancer and phase-out advanced/late detection of cancer in Nigeria. Nigeria has been rated the 1st nation in Africa and 5th in the world with highest cervical cancer deaths with over 26 women dying daily. Breast cancer incidence is higher with 90 new cases per 100 000 women annually in some western countries, compared with 30 per 100 000 in some African countries. In contrast, breast cancer deaths are almost identical, at about 15 per 100 000, which clearly points that late diagnosis and much poorer survival in Africa. PINK BLUE aims to change this statistics.

The Cancer Story you Haven’t Heard | Michaela Higgins | TEDxUCD
Speaking after her TEDxUCD 2016 talk Professor Michaela Higgins said, “We are seeing an exponential increase in cancer cases in the developing world as we improve the control of infant mortality rates and infectious diseases. 70% of all cancer deaths are occurring in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, yet nearly 90% of the $100 billion currently being used to treat cancers is spent in Europe, USA and Japan.” “As I outlined in my TEDxUCD 2016 talk to reduce this imbalance, and taking into account that most cancers have a lifestyle or environmental cause, we need to stop smoking, eat healthily and vaccinate against common cancer-causing viruses.” Prior to Professor Higgins current appointment, Michaela was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Consultant Physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. While in Boston, Michaela was involved with the development of a small oncology service over an 18-month period, at Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais in Haiti. This was with support from Partners in Health, a not-for-profit corporation working to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need, in Haiti and around the world. She is a member of Cancer Research UK’s Clinical Trials Awards and Advisory Committee and the Mater Hospital Lung Cancer Working Group. She serves on the UCD Clinical Research Centre Executive Committee. Michaela is enthusiastic about teaching the next generation of medical doctors, and is particularly interested in global oncology. Macmillan Cancer Support - Della's story. Being diagnosed with breast cancer
Della Ogunleye was born and grew up in Nigeria and now lives in Southfields, south-west London, with her two daughters -- Debbie and Sarah. Della was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2010, and says she was shocked because she didn't know many black people who had been affected by cancer. She was supported through her cancer experience by her Macmillan nurse Charmaine. Charmaine encouraged her to attend a support group, but Della found the idea strange as they don't exist in Nigeria, and had trouble finding one for Africans in her local area. In February 2011, with the help of a Macmillan grant, Della set up her own support group for Africans affected by cancer -- DDS African Cancer Support. She spends at least one day a week working on this, alongside her job as a parish administrator at a church. African American Women Breast Cancer Disparities - August 2012
According to a recent study out of Sinai Urban Institute, Memphis has the highest breast cancer disparity of any of the top 25 U.S. cities. The study shows that on average, one African American woman a week dies in Memphis due to disparities. Leaders from Methodist Healthcare and The West Clinic recently called a meeting with authors of that study to discuss the issue and brainstorm solutions.

6 Natural Ways to Cultivate Healthy Breasts
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide particularly increasing in the Western countries, with nearly 1.7 million new cases diagnosed since 2012. (Source: http://www.wcrf.org/ ) It is about time we start looking into how we can cultivate healthy breasts. The other day outside of a train station, there were volunteers with charity buckets shouting something that broke my heart. They said – 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. It was their way of raising awareness! But is it really? Every year October is considered to be the Breast Cancer Awareness month. We are bombarded with new statistics of women dying, newly researched Cancer treatments, inspiration for women to get themselves tested, early detection programmes, mammograms, etc. For me as a diligent student of the universal laws of attraction, talking about cancer awareness never felt right! Talk to me about Breast Health Awareness i.e. how to heal, understand and nurture our breast health and I will be the first ones joining the propaganda. Big Pink Volleyball Breast Cancer Fundraiser 2009 at Western Illinois University
MACOMB, IL - - It's time to roll out and set up the pink again the Big Pink Volleyball that is! Western Illinois University's Ninth Annual Big Pink Volleyball single-elimination tournament is slated to take place from Thursday, Sept. 28Thursday, Oct. 1 on WIU's Macomb campus. The tourney begins at 4:30 p.m. daily. Sponsored by Campus Recreation, Thompson Hall, University Housing and Dining Services, McDonough District Hospital and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, Big Pink Volleyball is Western's annual breast cancer fundraising event from which thousands of dollars are generated for breast cancer research and treatment. The 2008 Big Pink Volleyball tournament raised around $7,000 and attracted a record-breaking 993 participants. According to Judy Yeast, associate director of Campus Recreation, each year, Big Pink Volleyball draws hundreds of WIU students, faculty and staff to the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center, all to bump around a four-foot-wide pink ball. "Not only is the game and the big pink ball a draw for volleyball enthusiasts and those up to the challenge of batting around the oversize orb, but the event -- which raises funds donated to Peoria Memorial Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization and to McDonough District Hospital's Mammogram Assistance and Other Cancer Screenings program -- also appeals to civic-minded individuals as well as to those who may have been affected by cancer," Yeast said. Team registration, which is $5 per team member, is due by 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Campus Recreation office at the Spencer Student Recreation Center. For more information and to download the entry packet, visit www.campusrec.wiu.edu.

Why Me? (HD) - Special Screening of the Pioneering Documentary on Breast Cancer
Oct. 21, 2010: Why Me? - Special Screening of the Pioneering Documentary on Breast Cancer In 1974, journalism professor Joe Saltzman produced Why Me?, a landmark documentary acknowledged to be the first television documentary on breast cancer. This groundbreaking program was viewed by one out of every three women in the Western world, and has been credited with saving thousands of lives. In 1974, it was an act of courage for a woman to appear on television to talk about what was considered a deadly disease. This event will feature a screening of the documentary and a panel moderated by television correspondent and journalism professor Judy Muller about the making of the program and how it paved the way for contemporary documentaries. The panel will also look at current television dramas and their portrayal of breast-cancer awareness and treatment. Be sure to subscribe for updates and latest videos. VIDEO NOTES • Women with breast cancer consuming the highest fat diet had three times the risk of dying compared to those with the lowest fat intake. • Markers of higher fruit and vegetable intake like vitamin C, folic acid, carotenoids, and lutein were associated with better survival. [whole foods, not supplementation] • Since most scientists and doctors believe the Western diet has a major causative role in this disease, then a fundamental therapy recommended to all women must be a healthy diet. • ...survival benefits achieved from a healthy diet and an exercise program exceed those of all other commonly prescribed therapies: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. ONE LOVE FESTIVAL 2009: The Walidanes - Women's African Drumming - Part 2
The 4th Annual One Love Festival in Hampton Roads happened again on October 17, 2009 at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia, dedicated to promoting unity among all. It was a great evening, full of music, poetry and dance. The last performers before the intermission were the ever-popular Walidanes, a women's troupe doing traditional and powerful African drumming. Here is their second drum piece of the evening. The One Love Festival Mission: Awakened by violence in the world, we, of diverse backgrounds, religions, races, and cultures, see the need for more peace, tolerance, and understanding. We put our hands and hearts together through music, art, performance, and the spoken word. We seek common ground... a community united in hope, a planet restored and a peaceful world where every day will be One Love. About the Walidane Drum Group: The MISSION of the Walidane is to create peace among all people by playing in joyful unity, to transcend our differences and to demonstrate the power of our Buddhist practice through our drumming. The concept of our womens drumming group was first developed by the late Camille Mitchell, a member of the SGI who was inspired by a similar group she saw from Chicago, IL. Before her battle with breast cancer ended, Camille organized a small group of aspiring women musicians. In actuality, none had formal training in music, but all had a deep seated desire to play for world peace. This determined group, as a promise to Camille and with the goal of renewing their Buddhist faith through powerful drumming, later met with Master Drummer Dame Guyue, Founder and Director of the Fara Lambe House of Drums in Washington, DC and the former Musical Director of the Kankaron Dance Company. Dames family (a Griot tribe from Senegal, West Africa) later named the group WALIDANE which means winners in the West African dialect of Wolof. Since 1999, this group of now seasoned musicians has joyfully performed in a number of venues in the United States and abroad. With a motto of One Drum, the Walidanes continue to mesmerize audiences with their love of drumming, their desire to touch hearts and their ever-growing determination to advance world peace through their vigorous performances.
