In this video Registered Dietitian Abbey Sharp busts the Beer Belly Myth once and for all and shows you how you can actually drink beer and lose weight. People around the world have been under the assumption that regular beer drinkers gain weight and in turn develop what is commonly known as a "Beer Belly". Abbey makes it quite clear that the beer is in fact not the source of the weight gain. Beer itself is comprised of natural ingredients. It is also lower in calories than spirits or wine and is not especially high in sugar. The weight gain people experience comes from the type of foods commonly associated with beer drinking. Some examples of this are overloaded nachos, buffalo wings, potato chips, and pizza. The real trick with beer is to sip and savor, be mindful of your consumption. Drinking one to two beers a day has actually been linked to a reduced risk of weight gain and heart disease. The key to making the beer work for you instead of against you is to enjoy it regularly and not abstain all week and then binge on the weekends. Also, avoid the bar food. That happy hour menu may look tempting but rest assured your waistline is going to be directly affected by your food choices when consuming beer. There are many tasty alternatives to bar food that go nicely with beer and will keep that "Beer Belly" from magically appearing. Additionally, when used regularly these alternatives can and will result in weight loss. One of these alternatives is Abbey's Brussel Sprout and Apricot Slaw with Beer Pesto Vinaigrette. Using Beer in Salad Dressings is a trick Abbey uses to cut back on calories without compromising flavor. She starts this unique slaw recipe off by shredding a few cups of Brussel Sprouts, Fennel, and Apple into a mixing bowl together with some finely diced Apricots. Then grind blanched whole almonds and Parmesan cheese in your food processor. Once that is ground down pretty fine add in parsley, almond oil, honey, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and finally your favorite beer. Grind this mixture up until you reach the consistency you're looking for. As a simple rule of thumb Lagers mix the best with sweet light greens, Pilsners go best with peppery greens, Wheat based beers pair best with fruity flavors, and English Ales go best with earthy veggies and grains. For this recipe Abbey uses a Triple Ale. This goes really well with cruciferous vegetables, also known as the cabbage family. Triple Ale also goes well with creamy dressings and stone fruits. When ready to serve toss the greens with the pesto and top it off with toasted sliced almonds and shaved Parmesan cheese. This slaw is not only delicious, but it's incredibly healthy as well and an excellent alternative to those nachos you've been eyeing on the menu at your favorite bar. Mindful consumption of beer will avoid the dreaded "Beer Belly" phenomenon and has been shown to lead to weight loss as well as having additional health benefits. Don't believe the "Beer Belly" hype. The most common of these pathways involves two enzymes - alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase. (ALDH) These enzymes help break apart the alcohol molecule, making it possible to eliminate it from the body. First, ADH metabolizes alcohol to acetaldehyde, a highly toxic substance and known carcinogen. Then, in a second step, acetaldehyde is further metabolized down to another, less active byproduct, acetate, which then is broken down into water and carbon dioxide for easy elimination. Acetaldehyde has the potential to cause significant damage in the liver, where the bulk of alcohol metabolism takes place. Some alcohol metabolism also occurs in other tissues, including the pancreas and the brain, causing damage to cells and tissues. Additionally, small amounts of alcohol are metabolized to acetaldehyde in the gastrointestinal tract, exposing these tissues to acetaldehyde’s damaging effects. Drinking and Ketosis: Not all alcoholic beverages are the same, but alcohol is the same across the board; it’s a macronutrient with seven calories per gram and a byproduct of fermentation. Essentially, a sugar compound is acted upon by yeast and the yeast produces alcohol and carbon dioxide. Can Slow Weight Loss: You can still drink and stay in ketosis, however, it can slow down weight loss and fat loss. The liver will start to process alcohol as quickly as possible, which means it’s used by the body before all other nutrients - alcohol will be burned off before your body resumes burning fat for energy as the alcohol you intake will start to be metabolized immediately. Having a drink means you’ll convert less fatty acids to ketones, meaning there’s less fat being burned in the process - so alcohol will temporarily reduce new ketone formation. This is because fatty acids are oxidized to make the ketones, and alcohol suppresses fatty acid oxidation. However, it's still not the same as eating too many carbs, because it only stops the burning of fat; it doesn't reverse the process by raising insulin levels and shifting the body into fat storage mode. As soon as the alcohol is gone, your body should go right back to burning fat. Get Drunk Quicker: You’ll also notice your alcohol tolerance is lower when eating a keto diet, especially if you incorporate fasting. Since someone following a low-carb diet will have their glycogen stores depleted and will be running on fats instead of glucose, the alcohol will be metabolized by the liver much faster than someone with high glycogen stores to burn through. You won’t have the carbs to soak up the alcohol. Safe Drinks: You need to be mindful of carbs, particularly in beer, as excessive consumption could kick you out of ketosis. Hard alcohol: (Not usually made with added sugars or flavorings, so it’s a good default zero-carb choice.) But there are some tips you can use to limit the damage done. Alcohol packs A LOT of calories... First off alcohol is very calorie dense with 7 calories per gram. Protein and carbohydrates only have 4 calories per gram and fat is the most caloric dense of all with 9 calories per gram. So alcohol is almost as caloric dense as fat. But unlike protein, carbs, and fats which your body needs - alcohol provides no nutritional benefits what so ever. It's pure empty calories. Alcohol prevents fat burning... When you have alcohol in your system will NOT Burn Bodyfat. It literally shuts down fat burning until you metabolism the alcohol first. So if you are tipping back a few drinks over the course of the day, than you are literally preventing fat burning all day long. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions... When you drink, you tend to make poor decisions. And some people would argue that that's part of the fun of drinking in the first place. Combine this with the fact that alcohol increases your appetite and it's not hard to consume a lot of excess calories that go right to the waistline. What Can You Do To Minimize Fat Gain From Drinking? First you can plan your food in advance. Just like you'd pack a healthy lunch for yourself when going to work. Pack a healthy meal to eat when you go drinking. Rather than relying on whatever fast food, junk food, or pub grub that typically goes along with drinking. Plan ahead and have a healthy meal ready to go when the munchies strike. How To Limit The Amount Of Alcohol You Drink... A little trick that I used to do when I was younger is to space out your alcoholic drinks. So instead of just slamming back one drink after another (like most people do). I'd have 1 alcoholic drink, then I'd have 1 non-alcoholic drink, and then I'd have a glass of water. And I'd keep repeating this pattern all evening long. This way only 1 out of every 3 drinks I consumed only contained alcohol. This allowed me to fit in socially by always having a glass in my hand, thus people weren't pressuring me to "drink". And it also helped to re-hydrate my body and minimize some of the damage that the alcohol was doing. You can use this tip yourself the next time you go drinking with friends, even if you just did a one for one (i.e. one drink then one glass of water) this would go a long way towards minimizing total alcohol consumption and also minimizing the damage done.

Let me tell you something from experience when we get clients that have very little muscle mass it becomes exponentially more difficult to make them lose weight. As everyone else is losing 3, 4 pounds a week they're losing one every other week. This is a hugely Overlook Factor especially by women. Remember even though your ultimate goal is to burn fat your goal with weight training has to be to build muscle because that's ultimately going to be the thing that helps you burn fat the most. Now what's the best way to build muscle with weight training. If your natural like most of the people that watch this channel then you absolutely must strive to lift heavier and heavier weights. Unless you're somebody that enjoys doing hundreds of reps of calaesthetics upping the weights is the best way to ensure that you progressively overload your muscles. Training heavy also helps increase a natural lifters ability to synthesize protein which is again super important for building muscle and building up your metabolism. Now there's been a lot of people that have made the claim that working your sets until failure is a bad idea and doesn't pay off. This is wrong. yes maximal muscle fiber recruitment is necessary to stimulate protein synthesis. And yes you can achieve maximal muscle fiber recruitment with a heavy load and with a light load. However the problem is that most people that use light weights stop before ever achieving maximal muscle fiber recruitment. That's why training to failure especially when you're not in a lab being studied is a far better idea for building muscle. When you fail you can be almost certain that you achieved maximal muscle fiber recruitment and in turn you'll have an increase in muscle protein synthesis. The bottom line is make sure that you're going heavy with your weights at least 3 days a week and if you want more information on sets and Reps I'll include a link at the end for a video i made earlier that dives deep into structuring and setting up your weight training program. Let's talk about element number two which is cardio. You don't want to do just any regular kind of cardio. Especially when a lot of people that have stubborn belly fat need to be working on building muscle. Doing a lot of long duration cardio like jogging for miles is not gonna help you build muscle and it's truly not the most effective way to burn fat. The best type of cardio that you can do for fat loss is interval training. There are tons of different forms of interval training but I'm just going to give you one very simple approach for your cardio workouts. You sprint for 60 seconds and then you walk for 60 seconds. If you're a little more advanced you can Sprint for 60 seconds and then jog for 60 seconds. The cool thing is as opposed to long duration cardio you're going to be done with this work out in just 20 minutes. Now keep in mind to do this correctly and to experience the fat burning effects when you sprint you have to Sprint. Whenever you're doing interval training, when you're doing the "work" interval you almost always want a maximum effort. By doing this type of interval training this is going to invoke the afterburn effect

Today’s video is for all those looking for that first baby step towards getting leaner and healthier. Fitness is a science. A tonne of information goes into contributing to a healthy lifetysle and thus a lean body. I’ve had a deep, burning passion for fitness for a while now, and it’s safe to say that I’m still learning. But there was that first step. As a fat teenager, when I went up to my trainer and asked him to give me my first basic task, my first step in moving towards a healthy lifestyle, he told me this – “For now, the deep fried food, the junk food, everything that’s savoury is fine. In the beginning you can afford to eat a bit of unhealthy food. But the one thing you should absolutely stay away from, THE ONE THING that you should avoid at all costs, IF YOU WANT TO GET FIT, is dessert. Avoid all kinds of desserts.” I blindly followed his advice and this very motto has become a cornerstone of my lifestyle. THE ONE THING that I avoid as much as possible, is dessert and there is a reason for that. I drink, I eat pakodas, at least thrice a week I have an enormous helping of greasy red meat. But THE ONE THING I WILL ALWAYS AVOID will be dessert. It has to be a VERY special occasion or it has to be a non-negotiable craving for me to even consider having a sweet dish after my meals. I believe that dessert and sweets in general are the one food that keeps people from being lean. Anyone who is overweight/unhealthy, I guarantee you, they have an affinity for sweets, they have a “sweet tooth”. It needs to be understood that desserts aren’t a food source. They are a vice. There’s a reason that most fit people avoid sugary foods. I would go as far as saying I pool desserts with alcohol or drugs. And there are multiple reasons why. I guarantee that if you ONLY avoid dessert, you'll surely lose weight. You can't expect to lose 10kg in 10 days honestly, but If you ask me to give you a number, i'd say about 10 kg in 6 months provided you exercise. And 10kg in a year if you don't exercise.
