However, there are steps you can take towards reducing blood pressure. In this video, I'll discuss high blood pressure, the new 2017 blood pressure guidelines and how to lower blood pressure. New blood pressure guidelines have been released that lowered the diagnosis of high blood pressure from 140/90 to 130/80. This is the first revision of the high blood pressure guidelines since 2003 and will have a major impact to the number of people being diagnosed with high blood pressure. Your chances for heart attack or stroke double at 130/80, compared to the optimal blood pressure of 120/80. These new high blood pressure guidelines will result in almost half of the U.S. adult population having high blood pressure, with the greatest impact expected among younger people. High blood pressure is expected to triple among men under age 45, and double among women under 45. There are two numbers that make up your blood pressure. The top number is your systolic blood pressure and indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls when the heart beats. The bottom number is your diastolic blood pressure and indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while the heart is resting between beats. There are 5 blood pressure categories in the new guidelines. Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg Elevated: Systolic between 120-129 and diastolic less than 80 Stage 1: Systolic between 130-139 or diastolic between 80-89 Stage 2: Systolic at least 140 or diastolic at least 90 mm Hg Hypertensive crisis: Systolic over 180 and/or diastolic over 120 So here are some changes you can do to start making today to start lowering high blood pressure. 3 tips on how to lower blood pressure: #1 - Food This is obviously a big passion of mine, as I work with people to help them eat healthier and eating a healthy diet is important to lower your blood pressure. There is a high blood pressure diet and foods you can eat to help lower your high blood pressure. Make sure you’re eating a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains while cutting out the foods that are high in saturated fat and cholesterol and processed foods that are often high in salt and sugar. Find a system that works well for you and it’s sustainable long term so that you can see the results you’re looking for and start reducing high blood pressure. #2 Physical Activity The point is to get out there and start moving. We often get wrapped up in thinking we need to go to the gym, we overlook one of the best forms of physical activity...walking. It is recommended we get anywhere from 90 - 150 minutes of intense physical activity per week. If you go for a 30 minute brisk walk 5 days per week, you’ve reached that goal. If you don’t like walking, you can go hiking, ride a bike, swimming, whatever activity that you like to do. Not only with the time go by faster, but you now have an accountability partner to keep you in check! #3 Stress Management Stress is one of those things that is easily overlooked, but plays an important role in reducing your blood pressure. Making sure you’re getting enough sleep at night can help, as well as putting some time aside each day to meditate or decompress can go along. You can also listen some music or do something you enjoy...like gardening or even taking a shower or bath. If you’re the type of person who wants to spend time with other people to reduce stress, meetup with a friend. All these things will help you achieve reduce the amount of stress in your life and lower your blood pressure. Some other tips on lowering blood pressure: quit smoking, stop drinking and reduce the amount of caffeine you have. I realize that it may be difficult to implement all these things at one time.
