A committed voice for sanity in science, Dr. Seneff has authored over two dozen peer-reviewed journal papers over the past few years about the connection between toxic chemicals and micro nutrient deficiencies in health and disease, with a focus on the dangers of Roundup (glyphosate) and the importance of sulfur. For more than three decades, her research interests have been at the intersection of biology and computation: developing a computational model for the human auditory system, understanding human language so as to develop algorithms and systems for human computer interactions, and applying natural language processing (NLP) techniques to gene predictions. Her current work focuses on the relationship between health and nutrition. Dr. Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Cambridge, MA. She has four degrees from MIT including a B.S. in biology and a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science. Flax seed, pumpkin seeds are also a source 3. Eat more blueberries. They have antioxidants that are helpful for the brain. 4. Tomatoes. They protect against free radical damage 5. B6, B12 and folic acid prevent against brain shrinkage 6. Walnuts are the top nuts for brain health. Just a quarter cup of walnuts provide the daily intake for DHA 7. Avocados are healthy brain foods. It is a healthy fat and promotes good blood flow and is one of my favorite brain foods. 8. Dark chocolate has powerful antioxidant properties that protect brain and is a natural stimulant and is a top brain food. 9. Broccoli has significant amounts of vitamin K and that is going to be good for your memory and brain 10. Curry. Curry has turmeric in it and this spice is helpful to your brain and memory. If I could eat curry every day I would (and I guess I can!) and the reason I love it as one of my best brain foods is the taste. But the benefits for my memory and brain are real. Essential Amino Acids and BCAAs: The Breakdown Out of the 22 different aminos, there are nine amino acids that our body cannot manufacture itself and must be consumed through food or supplementation form. These specific nine are known as Essential Amino Acids. Out of these nine come the three most important aminos in your body which are leucine, isoleucine and valine. These are known as Branched Chain Amino Acids or BCAAs. These three play a very critical role when it comes to muscle building and repair. What makes BCAAs different? BCAAs, comprising almost a third of the aminos in muscle tissue, are different from all of the other aminos in that fact that they are metabolized in the muscle versus the liver. This allows them to be a quick energy source when the body needs it most as they are used by the muscle cells to produce what is known as ATP. ATP is our body’s primary source of fuel when training. BCAAs offer a wide variety of benefits such as supporting quicker muscle recovery and repair post-workout, helping to increase energy levels, added muscle building potential, increasing strength and power and even have a preventing muscle loss while dieting. BCAAs are the drivers to muscle building. All BCAAs, but especially leucine, inform the body to start building muscle. Recent studies have shown that by taking leucine you can activate more protein synthesis; therefore, increasing the body’s ability to product new muscle tissue. Protein Powders vs BCAAs At this point you may be questioning yourself about taking a protein powder, a BCAA powder or both. My answer is that it really depends on you. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not: ⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain-free and therefore that rice is not healthy ⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and the preparation of the rice. Rice to stay away from: Refined White Rice (This is not jasmine or basmati rice but the sticky white rice from fast food or Chinese restaurants.) Rice Cons: • Fiber, minerals and vitamins have been removed. • Study shows that people are twice as likely to develop diabetes as opposed to those eating whole grain brown rice. • Contains phytic acid (enzyme inhibitor) which keeps you from absorbing and digesting vitamins and minerals. • Contains proteins that are difficult to digest Rice Pros: • Whole grain brown rice is high in B3 which is good for heart health. • Whole grain brown rice is high in selenium which supports the thyroid and kidneys. • Certain types of rice contain GABA, a neurotransmitter that can support the brain and help reduce anxiety as well as support metabolism. So ... is rice healthy? Is brown rice healthy? It depends on how it is prepared. I believe if rice is soaked and sprouted, it unlocks the vitamins and minerals versus most rices that aren’t sprouted. I personally consume an organic rice from the company, True Roots. It is a germinated brown rice (soaked and sprouted) which kills off phytic acid and is easier to digest. In Chinese medicine, look up “qi” or “chi.” They believe that short grain brown rice increase your body’s “qi” which is your body’s life source and energy. It is considered to be one of the #1 healing foods. I suggest my patients make a “congee” with chicken bone broth, brown rice and vegetables such as carrots and celery. This chicken vegetable rice soup is healing and nourishing to the body. In conclusion, is rice healthy? Yes, it can be if you are doing sprouted rice that is traditionally prepared.
