Dr. Reath and Mandi discuss the common misconception that all vitamins and supplement are safe to take before surgery. Some may cause problems during anesthesia and others may cause bleeding. The clinical vitamins that Dr. Reath recommends for surgery are available in our new online store. You can shop for them here. http://store.dbreath.com/medical-vitamins/ Mandi also announces this week's lucky giftcard winner. You can play with us on facebook. It's like a quiz show. If you get the answer right, you get the chance to win some cool stuff from our office. And, it's a chance, hopefully, to learn something about plastic surgery along the way. http://www.beverlyhillsprofiles.com Los Angeles board certified facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Jason Litner and Dr. Peyman Solieman discuss the different medication, supplements and herbal supplements patients should avoid before and after surgery. It is important to inform your surgeon about any medications or supplements you may be taking. Some medications and supplements can increase the risk of bruising, therefore prolonging the recovery period. Generally, patients need to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil and Motrin. Herbal supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginseng and ginkgo should be avoided as well. If the patient is suffering from a heart condition and needs to take certain medications, our surgeons will work with your cardiologist or internist to determine the appropriate course of action. Generally, patients should stop taking these medications and supplements at least 2 weeks before and after surgery. A comprehensive list of medications and supplements to stop can be found at your surgeon's office. Interested in facial plastic surgery? Schedule your consultation at Beverly Hills Profiles. Facing surgery can be a frightening experience. You may be having questions, fears, and doubts. Research suggests that people who prepare mentally and physically for surgery have fewer complications, less pain and recover more quickly than others. This episode is to guide you through the preparation process for surgery. While emotional preparation is a necessary, preparing physically is also important for a successful surgical outcome. In the 2 weeks before your surgery, you should: Stop smoking and alcohol drinking. Eat a healthy diet. Avoid aspirin, vitamin E, multivitamins, or other medications that interfere with blood clotting for a week before your surgery. Discuss it with your health care provider before stopping any medication. Exercise regularly. Some days before surgery, you'll be asked to attend a pre-operative assessment, which may be an appointment with a nurse or doctor. You'll be asked questions about your health, and some medical tests will be carried out. Make sure that you inform your doctor about all the medications, vitamins and herbal supplements you take. You'll be given clear information on: whether you need to stop eating and drinking in the hours before your operation whether you should stop taking your usual medications before going into hospital what to bring with you into hospital how long you’ll be statying at the hospital If your doctor has instructed you to fast before the operation, it's really important that you don't eat or drink anything – this includes light snacks, sweets and water. You need an empty stomach during surgery, so you don’t vomit while you're under anaesthetic. If you take insulin because of diabetes you'll still need to avoid eating and drinking before surgery, but make sure your medical team is aware of your condition. You'll need to remove all body piercings, make-up and nail polish before your operation. This can help to reduce unwanted bacteria being brought into the hospital. Also, the doctors will need to see your skin and nails to make sure your blood circulation is healthy during the opeartion. If you're staying in hospital, you may wish to pack a hospital bag. You may want to check with your hospital about their policy on the use of electronic devices during your hospital stay. Let your surgeon know if you develop a cough, cold or fever a few days before surgery. They'll advise whether your operation can go ahead. You should avoid certain foods and dietary supplements before surgery. having food in your system may cause nausea and vomiting, which can be dangerous. Some foods may complicate intestinal surgeries or cause diarrhea. In addition to this, Your doctor or surgeon will give you diet advice prior to surgery. The night before your surgery, you should only drink beverages you can see through. Your body will digest these drinks quickly so your digestive system is cleared for surgery. Avoid juice with pulp, coffee with cream, cola and milk. While fibrous foods are normally healthy for your body, you should not consume them prior to surgery. Fiber takes a longer period of time for your body to break down and your bowels need to be cleared out before surgery. Avoid high-fiber foods such as whole-wheat pasta, oatmeal, whole-grain bread, beans and lentils, artichokes, peas and broccoli, raspberries, pears, apples and oranges. Your doctor may recommend that you stop taking any supplements one week before surgery.

Should I take Vitamin C before plastic surgery? Yes or no? The answer is YES! You should take vitamin c everyday especially if you smoke or are not a big fan of fruits and vegetables. Vitamin c is a good antioxidant and also helps speed up the healing process. Make sure to avoid other supplements and less approved by your plastic surgeon. What is the best diet for recovery from surgery? Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center Nutritionist Stacy Kennedy, MPH, RD, CSO, discusses the best foods and diet for cancer patients. This video was originally filmed as part of a live video webchat, "The Best Foods and Diet for Cancer Treatment and Survivorship," held on March 25, 2015. View the entire webchat here: https://youtu.be/w-92_tZr_B0 More information on nutrition during cancer treatment is available at: http://www.dana-farber.org/nutrition Transcription: Yeah, so for surgery, one of the big things is actually definitely talking to your surgeon about your supplements. They'll more than likely want you to stop all your supplements about two weeks before surgery is scheduled, and that’s really important, because many supplements… We mentioned things like fish oil or garlic—there’s so many that actually can have a side effect of being a blood thinner, and that’s risky during surgery. So, stop your supplements, but talk to your doctor. You may not need to stop them all. Preparing for surgery, we know that people who go into surgery better nourished have better outcomes—meaning shorter hospital stays, less risk for infection, faster recovery time, less chance of complications. So, you can really help yourself by doing a little bit of a nutritional boot camp before your surgery and really being on top of that healthy eating, having natural, unprocessed foods, getting enough protein, fruits and veggies, eating more often, being hydrated, really trying to limit those junk foods in your diet as a way of preparing yourself. But specifically, protein is very important and so are certain immune-supporting minerals that are important for healing, and vitamins. So, Vitamin-C-rich foods, everybody things of the orange, but actually cauliflower this time of year is in season—very rich in Vitamin C. Also, looking at foods that are high in Zinc and Selenium, like in Brazil nuts, other kinds of nuts and seeds—those are things that you want to be sure to include in your pre- and post-surgical diet plan. So, there are actually a lot of very specific restrictions and guidelines, that patients having different kinds of GI surgery would absolutely need to follow post-surgery. Some of those are a transition. You might start off with liquids and transition into softer, lower-fiber foods and gradually increase the fiber, perhaps just go back to a healthy, regular diet. Some people may have longer-term restrictions. So, there are very detailed specifics, depending on the type of surgery that you've had. Again though, that small, frequent meal, having protein with your foods—those kinds of things can be really helpful, but you definitely want to talk to a dietician post-op to find out based on your particular surgery… Do you have to watch out for fat content? Fiber content? Things like that.

Herbal medicines are very popular among Americans. Millions of people use them for their health benefits. For example, gingko is beneficial for the memory, and Echinacea is used to fight against cold. While it may seem like a good idea to use these herbal products, they should be avoided before any type of surgery, including plastic surgery. According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists and other major medical bodies, patients must stop taking herbal medications at least 2-3 weeks before surgery, including plastic surgery. The herbal products come with a number of side effects that can make a surgery life threatening for you. They can react with the anesthesia in negative ways and trigger excessive and prolonged bleeding during and after surgical intervention. The herbal supplements that can cause excessive bleeding and must be avoided include Gingko Biloba, garlic, Ginseng, fish oil, Dong Quai, and Feverfew. Furthermore, you must avoid ephedra and garlic because they can trigger cardiovascular diseases during or after the surgery. Herbal medicines that can prolong the effects of the anesthesia include kava, St. John's wort, and valerian root. These herbal medicines must be avoided before the surgery. There are also a number of herbal medicines that can react adversely with other medications. These include: • Licorice • St John's wort • Kava • Valerian • Echinacea • Goldenseal You must be sure to avoid these herbal medications as well before the surgery. Though herbal medications are dubbed as natural treatments and are available in pharmacies and stores, they are not safe when used before surgery. Just because something is natural does not mean it is safe for your health. Also, there is no supervisory body to look after herbal supplements. Even the FDA doesn’t regulate herbal medicines. If you are taking herbal medications, be sure to bring this to the knowledge of your plastic surgeon during the initial consultation. Hi. My name is Dr. Nassif and I'm answering some YouTube questions. Is there a way to help reduce the risk of bruising before the surgery? Yes. We're going to send you a sheet which tells you all the medications to stop taking besides Vitamin E, Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, things like that, drinking alcohol. These are some of the things we have you stop doing. Some of these obviously are blood thinners. Taking arnica before surgery, I think we give that after surgery not before in case it causes some problems with the platelets. In addition with this we'll tell patients to actually be very healthy. Some times we'll give them Vitamin K before surgery. We also want to make sure that we get blood work to make sure that they have no bleeding issues or anemias. Thanks. For dosage instructions: https://omarchives.org/vitamin-c-dosage/ (Ascorbic acid as recommended by Dr Robert Cathcart) If you prefer (and can afford) to take Liposomal vitamin C: https://amzn.to/2wZbSf3 (1g Liposomal equates to 3.5g ascorbic acid but costs about 11x more). We use the powder for maintenance, and occasionally the lipo as well for acute issues. As for Niacin, any brand of niacin will do as long as you make sure it's Nicotinic Acid. The others are toxic for your liver. Write the maker and ask if in doubt. This is the niacin (as nicotinic acid) we use personally: https://amzn.to/2fCmsBm (We make a 4.5% referral fee from Amazon on our recommendations and anything else you buy there for the next 24 hours, so please go through one of our links! Best Supplements for Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery | http://www.blossombariatrics.com | 702-904-8011 Hello. This is Michelle Phelan, nutritionist at Blossom Bariatrics, where expertise meets true compassion. We're always here for you before, during, and after your weight loss surgery procedure--because it's the after that's the most important part. Today we're going to talk about the top 5 supplement bariatric patients need post-surgery every day for the rest of their lives. The first one is, of course, your multivitamin. You'll be looking for a gummy or a chewable. Ideally, you'll find or you'll look for a bariatric formulation. The needs of a bariatric patient far exceed the needs of someone just looking to maintain their health. A bariatric patient is at risk for malnutrition, so it's more important to get a bariatric formulation to cover any holes in their nutrient intake. The second most important supplement you'll need to take every day are probiotics. Probiotics are essential for nutrient uptake, energy, your good mood, and your immune system. They also help you have proper bowel movements every day. The third most important supplement you'll need to take every day are your B complex--your B vitamins. Folks, this is really important for all patients who've had bariatric surgery, regardless of the procedure. B vitamins can be depleted every day on a daily basis. It's important that your B complex has a Methylcobalamin version of B12. This is so important for a post bariatric patient. Methylcobalamin B12 is the most active version of B12, and therefore better absorbed by anyone who's had bariatric surgery. Another important supplement patients need to take every day is Omega 3 fatty acids. They can be found in fatty fish, like sardines, or salmon, or in flax seeds. These are your Omega 3 fatty acids, and they're important for so many processes in your body. The last thing that patients need to take every day will be your Calcium Citrate. Now make sure that your Calcium Citrate, or your bone health blend, is very bioavailable and highly absorbable for your body. It needs to be citrate with other cofactors like D3, Boron, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, Silica. These cofactors help that Calcium get into the bones where it can be absorbed and assimilated. Thank you for joining me. Don't forget to check us out on our website, www.blossombariatrics.com for any additional information or questions that you may have. Thank you and have a very healthy day!
