Dr Chris Steele MBE talks about the importance of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is once again in the news. It has been claimed that supplements of the sunshine vitamin could spare more than 3 million people from colds and flu each year in the UK. The team from Queen Mary University of London looked at data from 25 separate trials on the value of supplements and studied respiratory tract infections in particular. They found that out of every 33 people taking vitamin D supplements, one person would be spared infection. This compares favourably to the flu vaccination, although flu is far more serious than the common cold. The analysis argues that food should be fortified with the vitamin. Public Health England, while recommending supplements, says the data is not conclusive. Why are so many of us deficient in Vitamin D? The often dull British weather is the source of much complaint, but is it actually having a negative impact on our health? According to the government’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), the lack of sunshine in Autumn and Winter is leaving many of us with worryingly low levels of vitamin D. It is estimated that one in five British adults, and one in six children, have low levels of the vitamin. SACN investigated the link between such deficiency and various health problems, including musculoskeletal health problems, heart disease, type 1 diabetes, cancer and multiple sclerosis. Those deduced to be most at risk of health problems related to vitamin D deficiency were pregnant women, children up to the age of 5, and adults over the age of 65. Those with darker skin and those who generally do not expose their skin to sunlight very often are also less likely to have healthy levels of vitamin D. SACN says that it is important for those high-risk groups to be boosting their vitamin D intake with supplements. As there is no easy way to assess who is getting enough, the committee has proposed a blanket recommendation for everyone, because the risk of getting too much of the vitamin is considered to be extremely low. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to various health problems, but most notably causes rickets and brittle bones. Supplements to help you avoid these problems are widely available, and the NHS recommends that adults in need of supplementation take 10 micrograms a day. Vitamin D has several important functions, but its main job is to help regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body – nutrients which are needed to keep bones and teeth healthy. What are the Effects of a Vitamin D Deficiency? A lack of vitamin D can cause of number of different bone problems. You may experience bone pain and muscle weakness, or develop rickets – a disease in which the bone tissue doesn’t properly mineralise. Research also suggests that a long-term lack of the vitamin has an impact on your general health, and may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and cognitive impairment. What are Good Sources of Vitamin D? Our bodies make most of the vitamin D we need in reaction to sunlight on our skin so it’s important to regularly spend time outdoors. In the UK, however, our skin is only able to make vitamin D in the summer because the winter sunlight doesn’t have enough UVB radiation to aid the production of it. The vitamin can also be found in a number of foods, including: Oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel Eggs Fortified fat spreads Fortified breakfast cereals Some powdered milks These foods, along with our body’s stores, were previously thought to provide us with the vitamin D we needed in the winter. Officials are now concerned that the recommended level of 10 micrograms a day may not be achievable by diet alone. How Much Vitamin D Do You Need? Previous thinking was that most people could get all of the vitamin D they needed by regularly spending time outdoors and eating a healthy balanced diet. Those most at risk of deficiency were thought to be: Pregnant and breastfeeding women Babies and children under the age of 5 People over the age of 65 People who are rarely exposed to the sun, such as those who are housebound Now the change of advice suggests that everyone over the age of one needs to consume 10 micrograms of vitamin D each day. This advice is based on evidence looked at over the last five years. Public health officials now say that, in winter months, people should consider getting this from supplements if their diet is unlikely to provide it.

According to a new British study, taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy does not improve a baby's bone density. Researchers did say; however; that for babies born in the winter the vitamin supplementation could help with seasonal loss of sunlight. Previously, pregnancy guidelines in the United Kingdom had recommended Vitamin D supplements for all pregnant women. The study included more than 1,000 women who were 14 to 17 weeks pregnant. Half took a vitamin D capsule daily, and the other half took a placebo. CINCINNATI (WKRC) - New research is showing a common vitamin might help you reduce one of diabetes' painful complications. It's called diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Researchers in the United Kingdom found that levels of vitamin D were significantly lower in patients with type 2 diabetes who had this kind of neuropathy. This is compared to patients who didn't have it. This study was published in "Diabetic Medicine." Neuropathy causes numbness, pain and tingling in the hands and feet. Researchers also found the odds of having this painful condition went up as vitamin D levels went down. The odds of getting this complication do go down as you keep blood sugar levels down as well. Vitamin D is found in many common foods: salmon, milk and eggs, to name a few. All of these can be included in a well-balanced diet to manage diabetes. If you think you may be at risk for this complication, ask your doctor to check your blood levels of vitamin D. If you need a supplement, vitamin D3 is normally recommended for better absorption.

Schoolboy Ryan McLaughlin wins vitamin D campaign Ryan McLaughlin Ryan McLaughlin became the face of a YouTube campaign Pregnant women are to be educated about the importance of taking vitamin D supplements thanks to a campaign by a 14-year-old Glasgow schoolboy. Ryan McLaughlin, whose mother Kirsten has multiple sclerosis, took his case to the Scottish Parliament's petitions committee earlier this year. He believes taking vitamin D can help prevent the condition. In a written response, the Scottish government said it would put in place an action plan to increase awareness. It said recent research had found there was an "urgent need" to provide information to all health professionals who work with pregnant women and young children about current guidance on vitamin D. "There is also a need to educate women about the importance of taking vitamin D supplement when pregnant and the importance of giving their children a vitamin D supplement until the age of four," the response added. These actions will make a big difference to the health of generations of Scots Ryan McLaughlin The Scottish government will now agree a co-ordinated programme of action with NHS Health Scotland, and has pledged to keep the McLaughlins informed of developments. Mrs McLaughlin, a former European Taekwondo champion, was diagnosed with MS two years ago. Ryan, from Drumchapel, said: "I am so happy to hear that the Scottish government are being so proactive and really getting behind my campaign. "These actions will make a big difference to the health of generations of Scots, and it will go a long way to giving Scots children some protection against disease caused by vitamin D deficiency and gives parents proper advice. "I am now looking forward to the summit next year when we'll hopefully be able to tackle the recommended levels but this is such great news." Fortified milk Ryan became the face of a YouTube campaign to publicise the use of vitamin D, and led hundreds of supporters down Edinburgh's Royal Mile to Holyrood before he put his proposals to the petitions committee in June. He told MSPs research into the genetic effect of vitamin D deficiency showed a link to the development of MS. Vitamin D, which the body needs for healthy, strong bones is largely gained through sunlight and food. The Scottish government has already ruled out free vitamin D supplements for all pregnant and breastfeeding women, and said there were no plans to introduce the supplements in the form of fortified milk or other drinks at school. Scotland is thought to have the highest rate of MS in the world.

How to control cavities pain Naturally in Telugu || how to cure cavities permanently Cavities are a type of tooth decay that occur when certain bacteria produces an acid that destroys the tooth’s enamel. Its so powerful that it also destroys the underlying layer (the dentin). Not many people know that it's actually possible to reverse it. There are several ways to naturally reverse cavities. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, cavities and tooth decay can potentially be reversed with a change in diet. In this study 62 children with cavities were divided into three diet groups. Group 1 ate a standard diet plus oatmeal, rich in phytic acid. Group 2 ate a normal diet and supplemented with Vitamin D, while Group 3 ate a grain-free diet and also took Vitamin D. Researchers found that Group 1, who had a diet high in grains and phytic acid, had an increase in cavities. Group 2 showed improvements in cavities, while Group 3, who followed a grain-free diet with nutrient-rich foods and a Vitamin D supplement, saw the greatest improvements. Nearly all of the cavities in Group 3’s participants were healed.kid teeth Many doctors and dentists have backed the findings of this study, suggesting that diet can in fact help those suffering with cavities to reverse their tooth decay. There are four main things that contribute to tooth decay: Lack of minerals in the diet (deficiencies of magnesium, calcium and phosphorus) Lack of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) Too much consumption of phytic acid-rich foods Too much consumption of processed sugar Natural Ways to Reverse Cavities 1. Remove Sugar For healthy, cavity-free teeth, sugar cannot be a part of your diet. Not only does it feed oral bacteria that prevents a healthy flow of dental fluids, it’s also highly acidic, allowing it to decalcify and demineralize the structural content of teeth! 2. Consume Nutrient-Rich Foods Beating tooth decay requires an increase in fat-soluable vitamins and minerals. A diet full of vegetables – especially leafy green vegetables, and foods high in healthy fats such as coconut oil and avocado, along with nuts and seeds can help create the ideal diet for battling tooth decay. 3. Eliminate Phytic Acid Phytic acid is a mineral blocker and enzyme inhibitor that’s found in grains, nuts, seeds and beans that are not organic or GMO-free. It can cause serious health problems, such as mineral deficiencies and osteoporosis. Phytic acid prevents you from absorbing the minerals in your food, while leaching minerals out of your body, bones and teeth. Avoid foods high in phytic acid by choosing organic and GMO-free. 4. Try Oil Pulling Oil pulling has been used for centuries as an oral detoxification procedure. Simply swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes, then spit the oil into the trash. Link Between Vitamin D and Dementia Risk Confirmed Researchers suggest that in older people, not getting enough vitamin D may double the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The study was published in the online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The study looked at blood levels of vitamin D, which includes vitamin D from food, supplements and sun exposure. Dietary vitamin D is found in fatty fish such as salmon, tuna or mackerel, and milk, eggs and cheese. “We expected to find an association between low Vitamin D levels and the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but the results were surprising—we actually found that the association was twice as strong as we anticipated,” said study author David J. Llewellyn, PhD, of the University of Exeter Medical School in the United Kingdom. For the study, 1,658 people over the age of 65 who were dementia-free had their vitamin D blood levels tested. After an average of six years, 171 participants developed dementia and 102 had Alzheimer’s disease. The study found that people with low levels of vitamin D had a 53-percent increased risk of developing dementia and those who were severely deficient had a 125-percent increased risk compared to participants with normal levels of vitamin D. People with lower levels of vitamin D were nearly 70 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and those who had severe deficiency were over 120 percent more likely to develop the disease. The results remained the same after researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect risk of dementia, such as education, smoking and alcohol consumption. “Clinical trials are now needed to establish whether eating foods such as oily fish or taking vitamin D supplements can delay or even prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. We need to be cautious at this early stage and our latest results do not demonstrate that low vitamin D levels cause dementia.
