It was known for years that the lack of sunlight exposure causes health problems. Recently, scientists have connected the vitamin D deficiency with poor dental health such as dental caries. 7. Rheumatoid arthritis. A study in Canada has shown a connection between vitamin D deficiency and rheumatoid arthritis. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. It doesn't really exist. But, what I'm finding through a lot of research recently is that Vitamin D3 might be as close as we can get to something that can reduce belly fat as anything that's out there. Let me explain how this works because honestly it's pretty fascinating. What Vitamin D is, first and foremost is a fat soluble Vitamin. It's a fat soluble Vitamin that helps regulate mood, it can help regulate metabolism and most importantly it regulates where calcium goes in the body. But, because it's fat soluble it means that it's stored in the fat cell. Start thinking about this: if you have an excess amount of fat or if you're overweight that means that most of the Vitamin D that you consume, even if you're taking a supplement, is going to get sequestered into those fat cells and it's going to stay there meaning you have less bio actively available Vitamin D3 to do the cool things that I'm about to explain. Let's talk about how Vitamin D3 actually burns fat. The first method is by increasing something called Leptin. Have you ever eaten food before and gotten full? If you haven't you're probably not human. Honestly, what happens is leptin signals your brain that you're full. When you eat a lot of food you have the production of Leptin, signals your brain that you're full and you stop eating. Problem is that without Vitamin D3, Leptin levels don't generally increase that much. If you have enough D3 your brain can signal and your brain can be told you need to stop eating. It's that simple. Low levels of Vitamin D3 those Leptin levels don't get too high and you can keep eating, making it very easy to overeat. Remember what I said about the Vitamin D3 getting stored in fat cells? Think about this, if you already are low in D3 and then you eat and you don't have enough Leptin so you keep eating more then you're going to develop more fat cells, which means you're going to hold onto more Vitamin D in the fat cells and more and more to the point where you have this snowball effect where you continue to store fat. Are you one of those people that have just looked in the mirror and say how did this happen to me? Honestly, I was one of those people seven or eight years ago. The other way that Vitamin D3 is proving to potentially be a good belly fat burner is through the modulation of the parathyroid and calcitriol hormones. The Parathyroid is a small set of glands around the thyroid in our throat and basically when they produce parathyroid or they produce calcitriol, we have a rapid increase in how our body stores fat. It tends to want to store it more. If we have enough Vitamin D3 the parathyroid and calcitriol hormones aren't quite as crazy. They're not going quite as haywire, which means your body slowly stores and slowly metabolizes fat versus doing it rapidly, making it where you look in the mirror and feel like it happened overnight. Those are the two main reasons that Vitamin D3 is starting to play a big role in belly fat. This wouldn't be a traditional video of mine if I didn't at least reference one peer reviewed, double blind placebo study. One study took 218 women. These 218 women they gave a strict diet and exercise program to and they asked them to follow it for a year. Then they took half of these women and they gave them Vitamin D. The other half of the women they gave a placebo. After one year of time, it was found that the women that took the Vitamin D had on average seven pounds more weight loss than those that didn't take the Vitamin D. It doesn't sound like much but just by adding Vitamin D it's pretty dang interesting. Then, there's one other study. There is another study that found that those that were taking Vitamin D3 had a better waist to hip ration than those that were not. Vitamin D is an extremely important vitamin that has powerful effects on several-systems throughout the body. Unlike most vitamins, vitamin-D actually functions like a hormone, and every single cell in your body has a receptor for it. Your body makes it from cholesterol when your skin is exposed to sunlight. It's also found in certain foods such as fatty fish and fortified dairy products, although it's very difficult to get enough from diet alone. The recommended daily intake is usually around 400-800 IU, but many experts say you should get even more than that. Vitamin-D deficiency is very common. It's estimated that about 1 billion people worldwide have low levels of the vitamin in their blood. Here are 6 signs you may have Vitamin-D deficiency. 1.Bone and Back Pain Vitamin-D is involved in maintaining bone health through a number of mechanisms. For one, it improves your body's absorption of calcium. Bone pain and lower back pain may be signs of inadequate vitamin D levels in the blood. Large observational studies have found a relationship between a deficiency and chronic lower back pain. 2.You Have Gut Trouble Remember, vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means if you have a gastrointestinal condition that affects your ability to absorb fat, you may have lower absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D as well. This includes gut conditions like Crohn's, celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and inflammatory bowel disease. 3.Depression A depressed mood may also be a sign of deficiency. On the other hand, most of the controlled trials, which carry more scientific weight than observational studies, didn't show a link between the two Some controlled studies have shown that giving vitamin D to people who are deficient helps improve depression, including seasonal depression that occurs during the colder months. 4.Hair Loss Hair loss is often attributed to stress, which is certainly a common cause. However, when hair loss is severe, it may be the result of a disease or nutrient deficiency. Hair loss in women has been linked to low Vitamin-D levels, although there is very little research on this so far In a case study, topical application of a synthetic form of the vitamin was found to successfully treat hair loss in a young boy with a defect in the Vitamin-D receptor. 5.Bad mood A depression diagnosis is often actually linked to a shortage of vitamin D. While the jury is still out about why, the Vitamin D Council says that the mineral may work in the same brain areas—and impact the same hormones, like serotonin—as those that affect mood. 6.Fatigue and Tiredness Feeling tired can have many causes and vitamin D deficiency may be one of them. Unfortunately, it's often overlooked as a potential cause. In one case, a woman who complained of chronic daytime fatigue and headaches was found to have a blood level of only 5.9 Nanograms per milliliter. This is extremely low, as anything under 20 Nanograms per mililiter is considered to be deficient.

He said he had been trying to move to Colorado for a few years but couldn't because of health reasons. After some job hunting visits, he noticed he didn't feel well here and was diagnosed with very high blood sugar levels -- but only when he was in Colorado. Upon his return home, his blood sugar levels would normalize in just a couple of days. This happened repeatedly. Let's call him Mr. C (short for Colorado). Mr. C scheduled a consult with me after seeing a long list of medical doctors and various other health practitioners with no success. He explained how frustrated and desperate he was. He and his family were waiting for him to get better so they could move to Colorado where he had received a job offer. Basically, he had blood sugar issues in Colorado, but nowhere else! What do you think Mr. C's problem was? After evaluating Mr. C, it was clear that something unusual was happening, as every system I normally check was okay. Ever heard the saying, ‘Constipation is illegal’? For so many reasons this is true. A good probiotic muscles out the bad bacteria and in doing so improves bowel movements and aids in digestion. Good gut bacteria can help us lose weight, enhance your immune system, decrease pain associated with inflammation as well as make some nutrients and vitamins that we need. Take a probiotic supplement with at least 15 billion live bacteria from one or more of the Lactobacillus family. It's generally best to take one capsule before bed. 3. A supplement high in omega-3 fatty acids Fish oil supplements are rich in the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are vital to good health. They support your body’s ability to prevent chronic diseases and help protect it against inflammation. They also promote a stronger immune system; cardiovascular, joint and vision health; strengthen skin, hair, and nails; and enhance nutrient absorption, metabolic function as well as attention, mood and memory skills. In short, fish oil is seriously good stuff, but as with Vitamin D, you can’t make your own omega-3 fatty acids, so you’ve got to get it from outside sources. Fatty fish and fish oil supplements are your best sources. Look for a brand that contains both EPA and DPA, the two key healthy fats in fish. Before taking any supplement you should check with your physician. Remember, the best way to supplement is with food that includes a rainbow selection of vegetables, lean meats and healthy fats.

Greetings, it's Eric Becker, the naturopath. The question today is can Vitamin D cause constipation? Well it can, but only in extremely rare cases. You'd have to take an incredible amount of Vitamin D to get serious side effects from it. In all the years I've worked with patients I've never seen a serious side effect on Vitamin D. Even when I work with people up to 25,000 international units per day, three or four times that dose, 75,000 units per day for weeks on end, months on end for treating acne. And I've not seen any bad effects come from Vitamin D. However, if you're drinking a bottle of whiskey a day and you're taking 5000 units of Vitamin D can be seriously bad 'cause you're impairing your liver function. So if you're doing dumb things like taking lots of Tylenol, paracetamol, ibuprofen, Valium, Paxil, if you're taking all these drugs like candy and taking Vitamin D, that can be a problem. And that's what I see some patients do is they'll take five to six medications per day and then they'll pop a few Vitamin C or D tablets and they'll think, "Oh I'll just clean my liver out from all this toxicity." But you can't do that. You need to see someone like me or a doctor or someone who understands the interaction of drugs and supplements otherwise you're going to be in hot water. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and you've got four of them. You've got Vitamin A, D, E and K. They're all fat soluble. Now healthy people like me, they don't usually have any problems at all with fat soluble vitamins 'cause they don't really do crazy things like drink tons of alcohol or smoke or do dumb things like that. They don't take handfuls of drugs all the time so their liver's pretty clean and tidy. It can easily process the fat soluble vitamin. The digestive system is in good condition. It can break the fat soluble down properly and absorb it and excrete the waste products. That's how the body's meant to operate. When the body's poisoned, however, with takeaway foods, lots of Coca-Cola and alcohol, when you pay lip service to diet and eat whatever, then you could have some problems with Vitamin D. This is why doctors unfortunately always zoom in on Vitamin D saying it's toxic, it's bad. They'll give out antibiotics on this hand and on that hand they'll take the Vitamin D from you saying it's toxic so it's pretty crazy isn't it? So Vitamin D can cause constipation in some people if it's taken in excessive amounts. We're talking 40,000 international units. I've seen people take 5-600,000 international units a day. Don't laugh I've seen it happen. These were people that were very sick with cancer and they thought well I'll just really mega, mega boost on Vitamin D. A very silly thing to do. When you megadose on Vitamin D, it can cause hypercalcemia in the body so too much calcium buildup and that can affect your kidneys or your eyes or your heart or your brain. It can lead to a lot of different health problems. You can also get muscle problems. You can even get seizures from high dose Vitamin D. So you need to be cautious with Vitamin D that you don't go excessive. Here's what you do. Get a blood test done. Check your level of Vitamin D. You want to have it between 70 to 100 is a good reading for Vitamin D. Many people I see are 10, 20, 30 and the doctor says it's perfectly fine. When I started testing patients for Vitamin D 25 years ago, they weren't doing Vitamin D testing. They didn't even think it was relevant to test for Vitamin D back then. And even now they're reluctant to test for it. The day will come when a test for all minerals and vitamins in the body of every human being and medicine hopefully will working on the premise of building up the health with minerals and vitamins rather than poisoning it with Tylenol and Paxil and crap like that. So what's the solution? The solution is get your Vitamin D level tested particularly going into wintertime. Make sure that your levels are well over 50 hopefully 70. And if they're not that level, you want to start taking 5000 international units of Vitamin D3. Make sure you get the D3, the cholecalciferol, the D3. So you take one capsule of that per day with a main meal and after about I would say eight weeks, 12 weeks, get the level tested again. Make sure that your level is up around the 70 mark. That could potentially hold off a lot of chronic diseases. It's well worth doing. But yes it can cause constipation. If you take crazy amounts, anything can cause constipation. Vitamin D was discovered in 1920 where its importance in our bodies was realized in discovering a way to cure rickets, a painful bone disease in children (2) 2. Vitamin D fortified foods began within a decade, making rickets rare in the US (2) 3. Vitamins are defined as an essential nutrient that your body cannot produce on its own and must acquire from the diet - Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin, but a hormone, which is a chemical that regulates body physiology. (1) a. Your skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlights, so it does not need to acquire it from food if adequate sunlight is available (2) i. The only natural foods that contain vitamin D are fish and egg yolks (2) What Does Vitamin D Do? 1. We are discovering more and more ways that the body utilized vitamin D as time goes on a. Vitamin D receptors, proteins that bind to vitamin D, exists in many of the body’s tissues, including the heart, muscles, endocrine glands, prostate and many others. (2) 2. Bone health - vitamin D is essential for our bodies to be able to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, the body absorbs only 10-15% of dietary calcium, versus 30-40% when our vitamin D levels are normal. How to Get Enough Vitamin D Now that we understand how important vitamin D is in our bodies, and how likely it is that we do not have enough, how do we get more? 1. Sunlight - It can be a good idea to first spend a bit of time in the sun before applying sunscreen a. spend 10-15 minutes three times per week without sunscreen on. This may be enough to prevent deficiencies (5) 2. Fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, and egg yolks (5) 3. Fortified foods: Many foods have been fortified with vitamin D, so look for this at your grocery store. Such foods include some milks, yogurts, orange juices and cereals (2) 4. Mushroom trick: mushrooms are a great source of natural vitamin D a. Exposing mushrooms to sunlight prior to eating them will ramp up their vitamin D levels! So sit them on your window sill or backyard prior to adding them to your food (6) 5. UV Lamps a. They are similar to tanning beds, but not identical. They carry the same skin-cancer risk as the sun or tanning beds, so be careful not to overdo it. These are a great option for those who live where there is little access to direct sunlight (8) 6. Supplementation: Last is supplementation. It is best to obtain some sunlight and concentrate on adding additional vitamin D in your diet. That being said, if you believe you are lacking vitamin D you can always buy supplements. Total recommended intake can vary from about 200 IU to 400 IU per day, including what you get from diet and sunlight. (5) 1. Signs and Symptoms You May Have a Vitamin D Deficiency. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is involved in many essential body processes and functions. Produced in the body with the help of ultraviolet rays from sunlight, this vitamin is important for boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation, promoting cell growth, supporting neuromuscular functions and more. When you do not get enough sunlight or eat foods rich in vitamin D, you are at a higher risk of suffering from vitamin D deficiency or vitamin d cancer . A 2011 study published in the Journal of Investigative Medicine highlights that vitamin D helps modulate the innate and adaptive immune responses and its deficiency is associated with increased autoimmunity as well as increased susceptibility to infections. Vitamin D is important for bone so you must find best treatment for vitamin d deficiency or you can get vitamin d supplement, cartilage and muscle function. Lack of adequate vitamin D in the body can cause general muscle pain, muscle cramps and chronic joint pain. Due to low vitamin D, calcium does not reach your skeletal system, thus contributing to bone pains. In fact, its deficiency is also associated with diseases like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. A deficiency of the sunshine vitamin can also lead to sudden mood swings. Vitamin D aids production of serotonin, the brain hormone associated with mood elevation and happiness. Increased serotonin can also help lessen the impact of stress and prevent or treat mild depression. Deficiency of vitamin D may also relate to other affective disorders, such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), premenstrual syndrome and fibromyalgia. Studies have found that some people suffer from mild depression during the winter months, known as SAD, mainly due to lack of sun exposure. Vitamin D deficiency can also contribute to psoriasis, an autoimmune skin disorder. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, appropriate sun exposure helps slow down the rate of growth and shedding of skin cells. A 2013 study published in the Dermato-endocrinology journal suggests that autoimmunity has been associated with vitamin D deficiency and resistance. This pilot study also concluded that high-dose vitamin D3 therapy might be effective and safe for vitiligo and psoriasis patients. If you are diagnosed with psoriasis, get your vitamin D levels checked and ask your doctor about taking a daily dose of fermented cod liver oil. This is a brief overview of how Vitamin D is synthesised in the body, how it acts on the vitamin D receptor and what effects it has on the body. Vitamin D can be made in the skin when it's exposed to sunlight. First cholesterol is turned into 7 dehydrocholesterol by an enzyme called dhcr7. UVB radiation from the sun, then turns this into previtamin D, which spontaneously transforms into vitamin D at body temperature. This actually means that because Vitamin D can be made by the body, it's technically not a vitamin, since a vitamin by definition is something that can't be made by the body. There are 5 forms of vitamin D found in nature, but the body only makes one, Vitamin D3, also called cholecalciferol. Even when vitamin D has been synthesised from cholesterol, it is still not active, and there are two more steps needed until it becomes active. The first step is the conversion to calcidiol, which happens in the liver. Calcidiol is then converted to calcitriol which is the active form of vitamin D. This step happens primarily in the kidney and is controlled by parathyroid hormone, calcium and phosophate concentrations in the blood, and the concentration of calcitriol in the blood. Now that our vitamin D is finally active it circulates in the blood and acts like a hormone. When it reaches the cell, it binds to the vitamin D receptor also called the calcitriol receptor. This whole thing then forms a big complex with the retinoid X receptor, or RXR receptor. Finally the RXR receptor needs to be bound by Vitamin A, making a big structure composed of calcitriol, the vitamin D receptor, the RXR receptor and vitamin A. This complex won't be active until Vitamin A is present, which effectively means that Vitamin D is useless unless Vitamin A is also available in the cell. When activated, this complex binds specific areas of DNA and increases transcription of some dna and decreases transcription of other dna. functions of vitamin D Probably the most famous role of vitamin D is to increase the level of calcium in the blood. it does this by Promoting absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract, meaning that we get more calcium from the food that we eat Reducing the amount of calcium that is lost in the urine, by Increasing reabsorption in the kidneys stimulating calcium release from bone by activating osteoclast cells Vitamin D also has effects on the parathyroid gland. It acts to stop parathyroid cells from proliferating too much. when the parathyroid gland becomes vitamin D deficient, it starts to grow to a bigger size than it is meant to and secretes too much parathyroid hormone, resulting in hyperparathyroidism. Vitamin D stops parathyroid cells from proliferating too much Vitamin D also has a role in the immune system with vitamin D deficiency and excess both having negative effects. Macrophages, dendritic cells, B cells and T cells can respond to and synthesise calcitriol. Earlier I said that the conversion of calcidiol to calcitriol happens primarily in the kidney but another place that this can happen is in immune cells. Vitamin D can also lead to the production of antibacterial peptides such as cathelicidin and beta defensin 4. These work by disrupting the cell membranes of bacteria, causing them to die. Summary So, in summary, the skin produces vitamin D from cholesterol when exposed to UVB sunlight. Vitamin D is converted to Calcitriol and is then active The most well known role of calcitriol is in calcium metabolism, but it has many other effects, such as in the immune system and on the parathyroid gland Future videos are going to look the roles of vitamin D in more detail, the amount of vitamin D that humans need and how the recommended daily allowance has been determined, the studies that have been done on vitamin D supplementation, what happens in deficiency and excess, and how prevalent vitamin D deficiency is.

In this video Dr Chris Steele MBE talks about how supplementation of vitamin D can improve symptoms of Crohn's disease. Crohn's Disease gets its name from New York doctor Burrill Bernard Crohn, who reported a number of cases in 1932 and the condition affects hundreds of thousands of people in Britain today. According to Crohn’s and Colitis UK, one in every 650 people across the UK is affected by the disease. Often described as a chronic condition, which means it is ongoing and lifelong, Crohn’s Disease causes ulceration and inflammation of the digestive tract, which causes redness, swelling and pain. The ulceration along the digestive tract has an adverse effect on the body’s ability to digest food and absorb vital nutrients. Crohn’s can occur at any point in the digestive system, but, most commonly, occurs in the ileum (the last part of the small intestine) or the colon. The disease affects people differently, and symptoms can vary from mild to severe. It may also change over time with people experiencing periods of good health and sudden flare-ups. The most common symptoms during a flare-up include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tiredness and fatigue, loss of appetite and weight-loss. The condition is also linked to other health issues, such as anaemia, arthritis, thinning of bones and skin problems. Current Treatments There is no known cure for Crohn’s Disease at present. However, there are treatments currently available to help give long periods of relief from symptoms and help you live a normal, pain-free life. If you suffer with Crohn’s Disease, it’s likely that your doctor will focus on a treatment that controls flare-ups and reduces the unpleasant symptoms associated with the condition. This might include: anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Pentasa, Octasa or Salafalk; steroids, such as Hydrocortisone and Prednisolone; immunosuppressant drugs, such as Imuran or Purinethol, symptomatic drugs to help with the symptoms, such as Fybogel, Aspirin or Imodium. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended. Medical Developments A significant part of the problem facing medical experts attempting to find a cure for Crohn’s Disease is that, at present, the exact cause of the condition is unknown. According to Crohn’s and Colitis UK, researchers now suspect that the disease is caused by a number of factors, including inherited genes, an abnormal response within the immune system and environmental triggers. Suggested environmental triggers include smoking, diet and stress, but this has yet to be backed up by hard evidence. However, recent research has discovered a link between gut bacteria and Crohn’s Disease, which has led to interesting advances in treatment. Currently, doctors are exploring the benefits of conducting faecal transplants to treat the disease. New research has found that by supplementing your diet with vitamin D, symptoms can be relieved. Another new treatment that has gained considerable media exposure over the last few years is that of using pig worms to combat the symptoms of the disease. Although many people balk at the prospect of drinking thousands of microscopic worms, the controversial approach has been reported to be successful in many patients, with symptoms of the condition radically diminishing over the course of a few months. However, the treatment does come with its drawbacks. It’s prohibitively expensive and as a result, is currently unavailable in the UK. The Future of Crohn’s Disease Treatment Although there is still much about the condition that doctors don’t understand, research continues and there have been considerable developments in recent years. It may well be that medical experts are on the brink of discovering a cure, or at the very least, discovering a treatment that manages the symptoms far more effectively.
