Vitamin-C is probably one of the most talked about vitamins around, yet almost one third of Americans aren’t consuming enough! A potent antioxidant, Vitamin-C known to fight free radicals in the body and plays a vital role in overall health. Concerned you might be Vitamin-C deficient? Here are some signs you should be watching for: 1.Slow Wound Healing If you notice your cuts and scrapes are slow to heal, have a closer look at your diet. As Vitamin-C is essential to the formation of collagen in the skin – a new connective tissue that binds a healing wound, a lack will lead to slow healing. Along with playing a role in collagen formation in healing wounds, Vitamin-C acts as a powerful antioxidant and immune-system booster – both of which encourage faster healing. 2.Dry or Splitting Hair and Nails A shiny head of hair and strong nails can often be a good indicator of a balanced-diet. Likewise, a lackluster mane that is dry and splitting may highlight a problem. Because hair is a non-essential tissue, nutrients such as Vitamin-C are sent to more important organs and tissues first, before making their way to the hair. So if you have less than ideal levels of the vitamin, you may find your hair is suffering. Furthermore, Vitamin-C is vital for the absorption of iron – a deficiency of which can cause chronic hair loss and slow hair growth, along with brittle and concave nails. 3.Swollen and Painful Joints Pain and swelling of the joints caused by inflammatory arthritis may be another sign you need to overhaul your diet. A 2004 study, conducted in Great-Britain, found that people who had low levels of Vitamin-C were 3-times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those whose diets included foods rich in the vitamin. 4.Swollen, Bleeding or Inflamed Gums Oral-health problems, like swollen or bleeding gums or recurrent mouth ulcers, are often linked to suboptimal levels of Vitamin-C. Again, collagen is important as it supports the gums. It’s estimated that gums turn over at least 20% of their collagen every day, meaning regular hits of Vitamin-C are vital for good teeth and gums. Low levels of the vitamin are linked with an increased risk of gum-disease which can range from simple gum inflammation to major soft tissue damage! 5.Poor Immune Function The immune-system, our body’s protection against infection and disease, is strongly influenced by the intake of nutrients, particularly Vitamin-C. Several cells in our immune-system need the vitamin to perform their tasks so naturally a deficiency leads to a reduced resistance against certain pathogens. Getting enough Vitamin-C means that our immune system will be in tip-top shape to reduce the risk, severity and duration of certain infectious diseases. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements recommends that men over the age of 18 get 90-mg of Vitamin-C a day from their diet, while women need 75-mg. Foods contain high levels of Vitamin-C are Sweet red pepper, Orange juice, Grapefruit juice, Kiwifruit, broccoli And strawberries. The effects were dramatic. The various inflammatory markers (INF-a & y, TNF, IL-13, 16, 17) were abolished in the vitamin C-treated dishes! Will a shortage of Vitamin C reduce natural defenses against gluten? The evidence presented here points to another conclusion: Mankind is suffering from yet another manifestation of Vitamin C deficiency European Journal of Clinical Nutrition Published online ahead of print, doi: 10.1038/ejcn.2012.197 Led by Dr. Anurag Singh, the scientists recruited 20 people with seasonal allergic rhinitis to participate in their double-blinded, parallel, randomized placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomly assigned to receive B. lactis NCC2818 (Probiotic) or placebo for eight weeks. Results showed that markers of allergic responses in the blood were lower in the probiotic group compared with the placebo group. In addition, the researchers also looked at the activation levels of white blood cells that play a role in inflammatory reactions called basophils. Measuring the activation of basophils is a common tool to diagnose allergy. The new study revealed that activation of CD63 basophils was lower in the probiotic group after one month of supplementation....... Dietary changes that include probiotics and/or prebiotics (found in some foods) and in supplements may help alleviate the severity of celiac/gluten sensitivity for some patients. According to a new research study appearing in the May 2010 print issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, differing intestinal bacteria in celiac patients could influence inflammation to varying degrees. This suggests that manipulating the intestinal microbiota with dietary strategies such as probiotics and prebiotics, could improve the quality of life for celiac patients, as well as patients with associated diseases such as type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune disorders.

Reduce Stress and Burn Fat with Vitamin C- Thomas DeLauer Vitamin C is just one of the many BASIC vitamins that doesn't get enough attention, learn more at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com We're always told that you can take vitamin C when you're sick or when you got a cold or when you've got the flu and it's going to help you fight the illness and get over it quicker, but no one's ever really looking outside the box and looking at what other uses we can use vitamin C for, at least in the business world for those of us that are living a high-stress life and are trying to balance work, family, health, and all that. First, let's take a little look at what vitamin C does and exactly why it can be a benefit to you in this particular case. Before I dive into vitamin C, I have to talk a little bit about cortisol, which I talk about in a lot of my videos. I talk about how cortisol stimulates the release of adrenaline, epinephrine, norepinephrine, all those hormones and those basically neurotransmitters that are going to make you in that fight or flight response. They're going to make you have to fight for something or run away and basically not be able to focus on the work that really needs to be focused on. Well, what vitamin C does is it actually blunts the cortisol, or more so, it blunts the effect of cortisol on the body. Simply by taking some vitamin C in a mega dose, your body can fight the cortisol and b in a better position to make executive decisions and to make the right progress in the gym and at home and in the kitchen. When it comes down to psychology and how you feel and how your stress levels are and how you can focus, there's even been a study out of Germany that took 1,000 test subjects, 500 of them, they were given a placebo, and the other 500 we're given high doses of vitamin C. Well, all 1,000 of those participants or those subjects were going into a public speaking arrangement. They were going into a position where they were going to be speaking in front of a lot of people, something that was going to be unnerving and stressful. The test subjects that took the vitamin C had markedly lower serum cortisol levels than the others. Now the other interesting thing is those that took vitamin C also had about a 30% reduction in their heart rate. What this means is that vitamin C had a direct correlation with reducing cortisol and reducing stress. What does this mean to you and what can you do? Simply put, mega dose some vitamin C. Take 500 milligrams with every meal, and don't worry about overdosing on it because vitamin C is water-soluble and whatever your body doesn't use, your kidneys are just going to excrete out. If you can keep a constant flow of vitamin C through the body, you're going to constantly be reducing that carbon footprint that cortisol is leaving on your body, and let's face it, as someone that's working all the time, someone that's focusing on business, someone that's trying to juggle all aspects of life, you are constantly stressed, and if you can combat it with a little bit of vitamin C, you're going to be more focused in the office, able to focus on what needs to be focused on to get the job done and to get paid. You're going to have more energy, more energy in the gym, more energy to focus on what needs to be done in the gym. You're going to feel better and not stressed out so you're going to make better decisions at home in the kitchen. Most of all, you're going to have that sense of well-being that's going to skyrocket you into a new level of success where you feel confident, feel good about yourself, and never having to focus on that multitasking mode where you can't get the job done. It's an electron donor, and what I mean by that is Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, has an extra electron. It has an ability to donate over to free radicals within the body to ultimately neutralize them. You see, free radicals are the oxidative stress that is running around through your body. When we have Vitamin C in the equation, we have this extra electron that can be donated over to a free radical to ultimately render it useless, meaning we can stop those free radicals right in their tracks. Here's the interesting thing. Animals have a natural ability to create Vitamin C. Humans do not. You see, animals create Vitamin C or ascorbic acid in their livers through the combination of four different enzymes. What happens is when they're under stress or when they're under any kind of interesting situation where they have to have a big surge of Vitamin C to combat free radicals, their body will create more. If an animal is under stress, its liver or kidneys creates more Vitamin C to ultimately combat it. So we have sort of this evolutionary proof that Vitamin C does have an effect on neutralizing bad things within the body. The problem is, humans lack the ability to create that Vitamin C. If you look back at the old times, we look back at the Mayflower and Christopher Columbus and all of that stuff, people contracted scurvy. Well, the way that they contracted it was because it was a deficiency in Vitamin C because they weren't able to get it from exogenous sources. They weren't able to eat fruits and veggies when they were on ships, so therefore, they became Vitamin C deficient because their bodies couldn't synthesize it and manufacture it on their own. Now we're running into a similar situation because a lot of our fruits and vegetables are void of the nutrients that we need to get adequate amounts of Vitamin C. So of course we take Vitamin C supplements, no big deal, right? Then that leads us into megadosing Vitamin C because a lot of people have been asking me, Vitamin C, can we take it in megadoses to ultimately combat cancer, to ultimately combat illness, and what is the effect of taking it in extreme doses? Well, we have to take a look again at how it works in the animal world. You see, in the animal world, their livers are gonna produce enough Vitamin C to combat a stressful situation that is ebbing and flowing throughout the course of the day, meaning they might have a baseline level of ascorbic acid that they're making, then they get stressed out so their body creates more. Humans, we have to rely on taking it exogenously, and it's all because we lack that enzyme known as gulonolactone oxidase. Without gulonolactone oxidase, we cannot create Vitamin C. So if we take massive amounts of Vitamin C at one point in time, we are basically simulating an animal only creating extra Vitamin C at one point in time, when in reality, we need to be able to have surges of Vitamin C throughout the course of the day. 1) Blanchard J , et al. This is a short video to explain the most important things you need to know about inflammation in joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. === Video Script: Every musculoskeletal injury goes through 3 important stages of healing which are inflammation, repair and remodelling. Inflammation is the body’s emergency response and begins immediately after an injury to fight the most dangerous effects. This causes swelling, redness and pain for 3 to 5 days. With inflammation no time of the day or night is pain-free. If rest or changing position reduces your pain then the injury has moved to the repair stage. On a cellular level, inflammation attracts specialized cells called fibroblasts, which spin webs of connective tissue to bind the wound together, similar to the scab on a scratch wound. This limits the flow of fluids, protects the injury and begins repair. Food supplements can be used to help this process by supplying the body with the nutrients it needs to heal and keep the inflammation at a healthy level. These include Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, found in vegetable oils like flaxseed and fish oils, and antioxidant nutrients such as Vitamin C, E, Selenium and bioflavonoids. The standard treatment for acute injury is Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation, also known by the acronym "RICE". Rest prevents further irritation and injury. Ice and compression reduces swelling and elevating the injury above the level of the heart allows the swelling to drain. RICE is generally done for 3 to 5 days after an injury, but it can be used whenever the inflammation flares up. Gently moving the affected area can be helpful if it doesn’t increase the pain or create more injuries. For example, patients coming out of knee surgery often have their leg strapped to a machine that is moving their leg in circles as if they were riding a bicycle. Anti-inflammatory medication can be taken If the pain becomes too much to sleep at night or if it carries on for too long, but these should be taken with care because they interrupt the natural healing process and they have side effects like stomach ulcers, liver and kidney damage. 6 Vitamins that Reduce Inflammation 1. Vitamin A Vitamin A is able to relieve pain in your muscles and joints. Also, it’s necessary for keeping your vision and skin healthy. It also contributes to strengthening your immune system. Another one of the benefits of vitamin A is that it helps in the growth and care of muscular tissue. It also does this for your bones. Vitamin A has also been shown that this nutrient regulates your inflammatory processes. It helps to reduce levels of the inflammatory mediator known as MCP-1. How can you get the necessary amount of vitamin A? Among the foods that have this vitamin, we find: Paprika Red pepper Sweet potato Carrots Lettuce 2. Vitamin E Vitamin E is an organic compound that is essential for the human body’s health. Since your body can’t make it naturally, you need to add good amounts of it to your diet. It’s recommended that adults eat at least 15 milligrams of this nutrient every day. According to a study carried out in 2008, eating vitamin reduces levels of cytokines. These are some of your body’s inflammatory mediators. 3. Vitamin C Vitamin C relieves muscle and joint pain by protecting and healing your muscular tissues. Also, it helps to: Strengthen your immune system Strengthen cellular development that helps with muscular maintenance and healing. How can you get the amount of vitamin C you need? The daily recommended value (DV) of vitamin C is one gram. You need to add 500mg of flavonoids to this (natural antioxidants). To get the flavonoids, it’s recommended you increase your consumption of: Vegetables (artichokes, spinach, broccoli) Fruit (apples, lemon, pomegranate, apricot, prunes) Green tea Cacao According to several studies, a high intake of vitamin C reduces the amount of inflammation in your body. Vitamin C can be found in foods like: Oranges Peppers Kiwi Thyme Cauliflower Spicy peppers Guava 4. Vitamin B The vitamins that belong to the B complex vitamins regulate your metabolism and strengthen your immune system. They also reduce pain and inflammation in your muscles and joints. And, they’re essential for keeping your skin healthy. B-complex vitamins are in charge of keeping your muscle tone and reducing inflammation in your joints. This is very useful in chronic diseases like arthritis. And, it’s helpful in acute diseases, like with certain kinds of viruses. It’s recommended to eat at least 50 mg of B-complex vitamins during the day. This should be divided into two servings. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) remain without effective treatment due to the lack of distinct pathogenesis and objective biomarkers. In addition to the typical symptoms of ASD, many children have allergic problems, including food intolerance and high anxiety associated with reduced cognition and inability to concentrate, commonly referred to as “brain fog.” We first published that most ASD children have high serum levels of two brain peptides secreted under stress, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and neurotensin (NT), which trigger mast cells, responsible for allergies. Mast cells then release inflammatory molecules (IL-6 and TNF), found to be high in the brains of children with ASD, that trigger the brain “defenders” microglia to proliferate and “choke off” neuronal circuits. Aluminum further stimulates both mast cells and microglia. In an independent published clinical study, when ASD children were administered an oral liposomal formulation of the natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoid luteolin (NeuroProtek®) they had significant improvement in communication and sociability, but not irritability. The omega-3’s are taken once in the morning, and again at lunch and at dinner. The grade of the oils is of prime importance when choosing an omega-3. I take 1500mg of vitamin C, 1000 iu of vitamin E, CoQ10 and green tea extract to meet these needs here. As I point out in the video, I do get adequate levels of both C and E in y diet, however I still take these as an insurance policy and investment in my own health. Just be sure that you don’t take too much vitamin E as it is a fat soluble vitamin that can be taken in excess and not easily removed from the body. Green tea extract provides additional blood sugar stabilizing effects via it’s impact on insulin sensitivity and therefore finds it’s way into my daily supplement regime every morning. Each of the above vitamins are taken once with breakfast as described in the video. Next I take the ultimate insurance policy, a multivitamin. I believe again that while we tend to get the majority of our major vitamins from food, we do not necessarily address all of our micronutrient needs (especially if we tend to follow somewhat restrictive eating plans or styles) so I feel more comfortable taking a multi as a backup.
