B6 poisoning. Normal levels is between 20 and 120. At 250 you can have neurological damage. My levels are at 317. I have not taken supplements in six months and really not consistently in the last two years since I've been sick. This must have built up in my system over years. This will be a very long recovery and something people seriously need to take into consideration when they get their labs done. It's not a normal lab that is done but should be. I may have permanent damage because of taking my vitamins.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms That Should Never Be Ignored

05:27
Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms that you should never ignore. According to statistics, about 40% of North Americans suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency. Poor nutrition is usually the cause. Also, those who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia also suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency. As we grow older, our body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 slows down. Vitamin B12 is responsible for helping make the red blood cells and DNA. Since the human body is incapable of making vitamin B12, it’s essential that we get it from supplements or animal-based foods. But some people do not take this vitamin seriously. Because of this, they end up suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency. Here are some Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms that you should look out for. #VitaminB12 #VitaminB12Deficianecy #VitaminB12Foods Timestamps: You Can’t Stay Awake 1:13 Your Muscles Are Weak 1:49 Eye Issues 2:07 Pale Skin 2:31 Red, Smooth Tongue 2:52 What Can Cause B12 Deficiency 3:19 Steps to Getting Rid of B12 Deficiency 3:49 B12 Supplements 4:06 Quality Probiotics 4:28 Stop Eating Inflammatory Foods 4:42 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music Summary: - The human body relies on vitamin B12 to produce red blood cells. The more red blood cells that are created, the more oxygen is carried through the body. One thing to remember is that fatigue is only one symptom, so don’t assume you’re vitamin B12 deficient. - To keep your muscles strong, they need oxygen. The red blood cells that deploy oxygen to the muscles rely on vitamin B12. So if you are vitamin B12 deficient, your muscles will feel weak. - In severe cases, vitamin B12 deficiency can damage the optic nerve. It can also plug up the blood vessels directly in the retina. This can cause double vision, blurry vision, and even vision loss. - If you notice that your complexion looks yellowish, you may be vitamin B12 deficient. It’s when the red blood cells are broken that causes the release of bilirubin. So speak with your doctor if you experience this. - The little bumps that are present on your tongue are called papillae. People who suffer from B12 deficiency lose the papillae on their tongue. If you lose most of it, your food will not taste good. - Memory loss or Foggy Memory is often mistaken for Alzheimer’s and dementia. But vitamin B12 deficiency can also be to blame. - Our bodies contain good bacteria, which is responsible for breaking down foods and absorbing nutrients. But when there is an imbalance of gut bacteria, it can result in improper absorption of essential nutrients. This could include vitamin B12. - Add sources of vitamin B12 like fish, chicken, and lamb to your diet. You can also add beef liver and chicken liver as well. - If adding food sources is not an option, taking vitamin B12 supplements can be a good alternative. - Another great step to take is taking quality probiotics. These will help you absorb vitamin B12 more effectively. Quality probiotic sources include kefir, dark chocolate and kombucha. - To keep your gut healthy, you need to reduce the number of inflammatory foods you consume. These include packaged foods, fast food, fried foods, and low-quality meats and food additives. Professional Supplement Review - Benfotiamine

National Nutrition Professional Supplement Review's with Leading Health Expert Karlene Karst. Karlene gives us a 3-minute professional supplement review on Benfotiamine and why this beneficial to the body. To learn more about Benfotiamine, and how to supplement with it: http://www.nationalnutrition.ca/SearchResult.aspx?KeyWords=BENFOTIAMINE&All=True Benfotiamine was originally discovered over 50 years ago in roasted crushed garlic and onions. It is a precursor to thiamine (vitamin B1), in which the ring substructure remains open. This means that it is fat soluble and can cross cellular membranes more freely than thiamine's closed-ring structure. Once inside the cell, benfotiamine is quickly converted to thiamine pyrophoshate (TPP), the water-soluble, active coenzyme form of vitamin B1…. Is Vitamin B Complex Good For Diabetes?

03:20
Is Vitamin B Complex Good or Bad For Diabetes Download Diabetes Management Book: http://bit.ly/2g0NDAH Hello, I'm Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I'm going to answer the question, is vitamin B complex good for diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping guide (foods to eat and avoid). Most vitamins, minerals, nutrients, etc we need we can get from foods. However, in our world of getting things now, many of the foods that house these items are slowly disappearing from the shelves. Because of this many are turning to supplements to do just that, supplement their diet with nutrition lost in the world of high processed foods. When it comes to Vitamin B, we discuss the word “complex.” This simply means something with every B vitamin in it. How many B vitamins are there? Well, there are 8. Each one has different ways in which they help the body. Some maintain healthy skin and muscle tone, others enhance your immune and nervous system functions, while still others promote cell growth and division. The eight B vitamins are B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12 - and they all have other names that you're probably more familiar with. And please don’t ask me what happened to Vitamins B4, B8, B10 and B11 because I have no idea. All B’s are water-soluble vitamins. This means that your body can't store them. B Vitamins need to be added daily because whatever the body doesn't use, gets flushed out in your urine. Most people get these vitamins in the food they eat. If you have food restrictions, whether you don't eat meat, dairy products, eggs, or whole grains for whatever reason, you may need to take supplements. There are specific B Vitamins that are beneficial to those with diabetes. B1 (thiamine) helps the body convert carbohydrates and fat into energy. In foods this is found in whole grains, mainly green veggis and livers. B2 (riboflavin) is required by the body for the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. This is found in many dairy products. B6 (Pyridoxine) aids in the protection of nerve cells. This is especially important to fight diabetic neuropathy. This is found in nuts, fish, salad greens and bananas. B12 (Cobalamin) is crucial to good blood health. This is mainly found in animal products. So is B complex good for diabetes? Yes it is. If you don’t eat a lot of meat or dairy, you especially need to supplement your diet with a good B complex. I hope this answered your question is vitamin B complex good or bad for diabetes. Don’t forget to get your diabetes management book. Let me know if you have any other diabetes related questions.

Most Common Low B12 Symptoms

06:36
do you think you might have low b12 symptoms or symptoms of b12 deficiency in this video we'll cover the most commonly recognized low b12 symptoms some other not so common and what things you want to think about when you are considering low b12 symptoms other things you might want to rule out in addition to the low b12 symptoms and then of course at the end give you some things to consider doing if it does seem like you do have low b12 based on the symptoms I outline. hi this is dr. tarantella and when you have low b12 your symptoms may be a little bit vague and oftentimes people will tribute these to other health issues or life circumstances such as you know haven't been getting as much sleep lately or eating as good recently I'm working more not exercising as much but I want you to keep in mind that b12 could be the cause and that's why I'm making this video is to help people become more acquainted with low b12 symptoms and more easily identify when you might have low b12 and also you know maybe what to do about it to at the end so first the most common is fatigue another way to say fatigue is low energy and fatigue can present in a lot of different ways so you know it's hard to you know say what's low energy usually I have people you know say what's your energy on a scale from one to ten and if it's lesson salmon I would say that's low energy but a lot of times people don't identify with that per se they may say well you know I'm having a little bit more brain fog you know difficulty with recall of words or names or just you know thought process isn't working as efficiently you're not grasping certain topics or points that people are learning new material or points that people are trying to get across to you for example another way to describe fatigue would be malaise just sort of feeling kind of like apathetic or you know not interested in doing things basic ideas you don't have the same level of motivation or get up and go that you used to other people may describe it as you know the to-do list that just sort of piling up and you're just not interested in doing those things all that could be you know attributed to low b12 and in more severe cases you may actually feel depressed you know just mildly depressed mood or you could also have clinical depression so that all goes in the category of Low Energy another common b12 deficiency which may not identify with the above but you may have this one which is you know we put this in the category of more neuropathic type of things so this is often time often times called neuropathy or you may experience it as numbness and tingling in your hands or feet it's not off it doesn't always have to be in the hands or feet it could be really anywhere in your body and your leg or or something like that you could also be not just numbness but like some people describe it as like a vibratory sensation anywhere in your body it could be experiencing that and sometimes even like ringing in the ears but that basic idea is like any neuropathic pain could be cause or neuropathic symptom which is basically just something going on with the nerves in your body could be attributed to b12 deficiency so want you to keep that in mind and then the last one is shortness of breath or decrease exercise tolerance that could also cause be caused by low b12 and you know it's a cop it's a common symptom that people do have and you know oftentimes overlooked it for other reasons so these are all you know those three categories but you know there's specifics within each of those categories are all symptoms of b12 deficiency if you have these symptoms and more than one of these symptoms it makes more sense that maybe those symptoms are attributed to low b12 but we don't want to get you know too focused on just one thing these symptoms could be attributed to a lot of other things some of these symptoms could be attributed to like iron deficiency or heart disease multiple sclerosis fibromyalgia having an infection for a long time or allergies chronic fatigue syndrome fully deficiency you know fibromyalgia said that already but many there's many other health issues that can cause some of these symptoms I mean for example types of anemia b12 can cause anemia but so can iron deficiency there's other Mediterranean type of things I can genetically MIA which can also cause shortness of breath lung issues asthma and so so it's important to you know keep that in mind there's you know lots of things that can cause some of these symptoms but testing for b12 is fairly easy inexpensive and when we test your b12 levels and that's actually actually shows up as low it's pretty clear that you know your body isn't getting enough b12 even in the mid-range of the b12 reference range you know like less than 500 I would say you're you're probably not getting adequate amounts of b12 so so that's pretty clear but when your levels are high that doesn't necessarily mean that you have enough b12.

Diagnosing and Treating Vitamin B12 Deficiency

51:46
Vitamin B12 deficiency can sneak up on you, and can lead to a myriad of diseases and disorders. Know the signs and symptoms. You could be deficient yet still test in the so-called range of "normal B12" on a blood test, especially if you have taken an oral B12 supplement of uncertain quality, or you have been under-treating the deficiency. Oral B12 supplements do not work for all patients; patients with digestive/absorption problems benefit from B12 injections, as do patients with nerve damage.

Vitamins For Nerve Pain, Neuropathy Cream, Homeopathic Remedy For Nerve Pain http://neuropathy-secrets.info-pro.co What Causes Neuropathy? Physical trauma, repetitive injury, infection, metabolic problems and exposure to toxins and some drugs can all lead to peripheral neuropathy. Diabetes Most cases of neuropathy are found in people who have the metabolic disorder diabetes,2 when it is known simply as diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a microvascular complication: excess blood glucose in people with diabetes can, over a number of years, injure the walls of tiny blood vessels supplying nerves, especially those in the legs.3 The consequence of the nerve damage can be an inability to feel pain, and so problems can go unnoticed by people with diabetes, for example because of "insensate" injury to their feet.4 In the US, diabetic neuropathy is the primary cause of diabetic foot problems and ulcers.5 Specific estimates vary, but overall about half of people with diabetes have diabetic neuropathy.6 Other conditions While diabetes is the most common cause of neuropathy, other medical conditions can also lead to the problem:1 Chronic liver disease Chronic kidney disease HIV infection and AIDS Long-term excessive alcohol intake Vitamin B deficiency and other nutritional deficiency Cancer - lymphoma or multiple myeloma Lyme disease, a tick-borne bacterial infection Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a genetic cause of nerve damage, particularly in the lower limbs Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition that damages peripheral nerves Diphtheria, a common bacterial infection in developing countries such as Haiti and Vietnam, but rare in other parts of the world. Vitamin B6 Deficiency: Causes and How to Fix It

03:19
This video talks about the vitamin b6 deficiency, its signs, causes, and how to fix this condition. Vitamin B6 is involved in many systems of our body. It helps our nervous system to produce antibodies to fight disease. It participates in metabolizing protein and making hemoglobin. When we lack this vitamin, we may experience high levels of chronic inflammation. It may be one of the factors that contribute to anxiety and depression. Men should have enough of B6 in their diet if they workout a lot and have a high protein diet. Vegetarians have to consume foods rich in vitamin B6 to support their health and avoid possible issues. #vitamins #vitaminb6 #nutrition #anxiety ------------------------------- In our channel "Agnistoka: you will find more interesting and useful videos on yoga, ayurveda, better health and self-development. Peripheral neuropathy: Symptoms, causes, and treatment

10:55
Peripheral neuropathy: Symptoms, causes, and treatment Overview Peripheral neuropathy, a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body. Your peripheral nervous system sends information from your brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) to the rest of your body. Peripheral neuropathy can result from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, inherited causes and exposure to toxins. One of the most common causes is diabetes mellitus. People with peripheral neuropathy generally describe the pain as stabbing, burning or tingling. In many cases, symptoms improve, especially if caused by a treatable condition. Medications can reduce the pain of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy care at Mayo Clinic Symptoms Every nerve in your peripheral system has a specific function, so symptoms depend on the type of nerves affected. Nerves are classified into: Sensory nerves that receive sensation, such as temperature, pain, vibration or touch, from the skin Motor nerves that control muscle movement Autonomic nerves that control functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, digestion and bladder Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy might include: Gradual onset of numbness, prickling or tingling in your feet or hands, which can spread upward into your legs and arms Sharp, jabbing, throbbing, freezing or burning pain Extreme sensitivity to touch Lack of coordination and falling Muscle weakness or paralysis if motor nerves are affected If autonomic nerves are affected, signs and symptoms might include: Heat intolerance and altered sweating Bowel, bladder or digestive problems Changes in blood pressure, causing dizziness or lightheadedness Peripheral neuropathy can affect one nerve (mononeuropathy), two or more nerves in different areas (multiple mononeuropathy) or many nerves (polyneuropathy). Carpal tunnel syndrome is an example of mononeuropathy. Most people with peripheral neuropathy have polyneuropathy. When to see a doctor Seek medical care right away if you notice unusual tingling, weakness or pain in your hands or feet. Early diagnosis and treatment offer the best chance for controlling your symptoms and preventing further damage to your peripheral nerves. Causes Not a single disease, peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage caused by a number of conditions. Causes of neuropathies include: Alcoholism. Poor dietary choices made by people with alcoholism can lead to vitamin deficiencies. Autoimmune diseases. These include Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and necrotizing vasculitis. Diabetes. More than half the people with diabetes develop some type of neuropathy. Exposure to poisons. Toxic substances include heavy metals or chemicals. Medications. Certain medications, especially those used to treat cancer (chemotherapy), can cause peripheral neuropathy. Infections. These include certain viral or bacterial infections, including Lyme disease, shingles, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C, leprosy, diphtheria and HIV. Inherited disorders. Disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease are hereditary types of neuropathy. Trauma or pressure on the nerve. Traumas, such as from motor vehicle accidents, falls or sports injuries, can sever or damage peripheral nerves. Nerve pressure can result from having a cast or using crutches or repeating a motion such as typing many times. Tumors. Growths, cancerous (malignant) and noncancerous (benign), can develop on the nerves or press nerves. Also, polyneuropathy can arise as a result of some cancers related to the body's immune response. These are a form of paraneoplastic syndrome. Vitamin deficiencies. B vitamins — including B-1, B-6 and B-12 — vitamin E and niacin are crucial to nerve health. Bone marrow disorders. These include abnormal protein in the blood (monoclonal gammopathies), a form of bone cancer (osteosclerotic myeloma), lymphoma and amyloidosis. Other diseases. These include kidney disease, liver disease, connective tissue disorders and an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Risk factors Peripheral neuropathy risk factors include: Diabetes mellitus, especially if your sugar levels are poorly controlled Alcohol abuse Vitamin deficiencies, particularly B vitamins Infections, such as Lyme disease, shingles, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C and HIV Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, in which your immune system attacks your own tissues Kidney, liver or thyroid disorders Exposure to toxins Repetitive motion, such as those performed for certain jobs Family history of neuropathy Complications Complications of peripheral neuropathy can include:

What are vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms & its management? - Dr. Sanjay Gupta

02:21
Vitamin B12 is a very common problem in our clinics. Lately we are seeing more awareness because of many diagnostic facilities and diagnostic aids. So it is important to do B12 levels wen we are symptomatic. Maybe we do not require normal package to involve B12 levels unless you are on a purely vegetarian diet because we know that purely vegetarian diet will suffer from B12 deficiencies. So there are many problems associated with B12 deficiency in the body, whether it is a dietary deficiency or it is a malabsorption. So these two are very important to consider because these two are different types of manifestations with the B12 deficiency as well as lead to complications. Within the different manifestations of B12 deficiencies, oral ulcer is one of the other common things but which can come with mild to moderate B12 deficiency and severe B12 deficiency can lead to nerve disorder or neuropathy. So oral ulcers can be treated by giving heavy dose of B12 supplements. If you want to document B12 levels and if they are deficient, then definitely injectable B12 is mandatory. So the level given here is 21.2 which is very low. In this situation, we have to find out why such low deficiency of B12 has come about. At the same time, we have to treat this with injectable B12’s and then supplement it with oral maintenance dose.

My Website: http://HelpCureMyDiabetes.com Jan 27, 2015 Use intermittent fasting to heal neuropathy and diabetes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyNTTY2zyrw November 25, 2014 I have uploaded a course on Udemy, with all the techniques and actions you can take to cure yourself. Here is the link https://www.udemy.com/peripheral-neuropathy-causes-and-cure/?promote=1#/ here are some questions and answers in the raw form.Yes, do the baking soda. It has an immediate effect of helping flush toxins. And it is cheap. It is hard to beat 4 cents. Benfotamine is a fat soluble form of vitamin b-6. I think the Benfotamine acts better than the B-6.I do use both though. Here is  a reply to someone else 's questions. Most of this will apply to you, as well. There is a state called autophaghy http://www.cavemandoctor.com/2012/04/06/autophagy-turning-stress-into-health/ that directly converts cellular debris into amino acids the body can use. To do this, you refrain from eating approximately 18 hours. Take your fasting blood sugar, eat breakfast, eat until lunch as you like, then wait until next morning to eat again. This will induce autophagy. This is directly opposite of standard diabetes protocol, which advises to eat four times a day. If you do that, autophagy never starts. Water with baking soda in morning is good, but it is good to do it in the evening as well. The alkalinity helps flush out cellular debris out of the cell, due to the smaller water clusters passing through the cell wall, compared with acid water/blood.If water cannot get in, the toxins in the cell will not come out.If you want to be hard core about it, get acid/base test strips and determine whether your saliva is alkaline or acid. Vary what you eat. The monotony of eating the same thing is very wearing psychologically. Also, you may be loading up on a particular toxin that your body may react to poorly. If you vary what you eat, you may still ingest a toxin, but one the body is better able to deal with, in the short term. Moderation in everything. Yes the vitamins you take already are good. I am now taking  Co-enzyme Q-10 because it helps get rid of cellular debris by making the RNA work better. here is some advbice for deqaling with nueropathy, even with high blood sugar. Can You Take Too Much B12? Be aware of the side effects!

03:55
The answer is yes. There is such a thing as taking too much B12 and it can cause some pretty bad stuff! Educate yourself and be aware of the dangers. I went through some ups and downs and now I'm feeling much better now that I know what my numbers are. I'm about to be retested again soon so I'll keep everyone updated. Be careful and get you numbers checked! If you want to skip ahead and find out how to heal from this check out my other video on how to heal heavy metal toxicity. B12 supplements can be contaminated with heavy metals and that is more than likely what happened. I was taking the whole foods 365 brand when this happened to me. https://youtu.be/rtcoGxZa_bo

Pernicious anemia, nerve and brain damage which in some cases can be irreversible, reduced sensitivity to pain, tingling, mimicked multiple sclerosis, vision loss, hallucinations, depression, psychosis, lack of motivation, personality changes and other neuropsychiatric disorders, weakness, fatigue, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, tremor, neuropathy, and elevated serum homocysteine levels especially in older persons are all some of the symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency. B12 is the largest and most structurally complicated vitamin known so far. In the normal digestion process it requires the glycoprotein intrinsic factor produced by the parietal cells of the stomach to grab the vitamin to then be absorbed by the small intestine. Intrinsic factor can be impaired by low stomach acid, past surgeries, bacteria, aging and other diseases. Those that have a poor diet consisting of processed foods are more likely to have malabsorption which can lead to nutritional deficiencies including vitamin b12. That explains why some of these junk food and beverage companies fortify their products with b vitamins. Its quite genius actually. These companies know that their products can cause deficiencies so they add the vitamins in!

Proven Vitamin B12 Benefits, Different Types of B12, and Genes Linked to B12 Deficiency

JOIN Today! Subscribe --►http://bit.ly/2o71Mm8 This episode we learn everything you NEED to know about Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)! We go over the Top 5 Proven Benefits of B12, the different types of B12 and which one is best for you, and genetic mutations that could put you at risk for B12 deficiency. FULL TEXT: Welcome to GeneAngel! I’m Alexandra Thompson, co-founder of the GeneAngel app, and this vlog teaches you how to use genomics to improve your health. A few weeks ago, we went over the different types of folate. This episode, let’s tackle B12! Vitamin B-12, or cobalamin, is an essential water-soluble vitamin found in meat, fish, poultry and eggs. If you’ve taken antacids or are vegan/vegetarian, you could be deficient. Foods rich in vitamin B-12 include fish, meat, poultry, eggs. That’s right - animal products, sorry vegans and vegetarians, you’re gonna need to supplement! B12 has been proven to: 1. Help reduce pain. B12 has been proven to help reduce nerve pain, numbness, and tingling. I can personally vouch for this - I used to have neuropathy in my legs, and it’s gone now that my B12 levels are up. 2. Protect & Repair the brain. B12 improves brain function, focus, and concentration by increasing neuronal regeneration and repair. This is an essential vitamin for people with mood disorders, Alzheimer’s, or vascular dementia. 3. Reduce depression. Speaking of mood disorders, B12 reduces depression by helping you make more serotonin! In fact, one of the symptoms of B12 deficiency is depression, and that was certainly true for me. 4. Pernicious Anemia. Anemia can occur when your intestines can’t absorb enough B12 from your diet, and you may need monthly B12 shots or large doses of oral B12. 5. Improve Symptoms of Diabetes. People with diabetes often experience depression, neuropathy, and reduced cognitive performance. Vitamin B12 can help with ALL of these symptoms! If you have MTR, MTRR, or FUT2 mutations can predispose you towards having B12 deficiencies. If you have these mutations, you need to take a bioavailable form of B12 like methylcobalamin. There are three main types of Vitamin B12 – cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is the form you’ll find in most supplements and enriched foods, but it’s also the least safe and bioavailable form. The only reason it’s in our foods is because it’s cheap to make. Don’t take it! Methylcobalamin is a safe, bioavailable active form, and can cross the blood-brain barrier. It’s great for nerve pain. Hydroxycobalamin is the form found naturally in foods and is very bioavailable. If you have COMT V158M ++ (G form) and a VDR Taq + (A) mutations, take this form. Adenosylcobalamin is the form of vitamin B12 stored in the mitochondria. So if you have CFS, fibromyalgia, fatigue, early aging, try this one in combination with methyl or hydroxoB12. Thanks so much for watching! Please subscribe, like, comment, it means so much to me. See you guys next week!

Vitamins A, B, C Part 1 - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

07:35
Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video explains about the Important vitamins for bone health. Vitamin A Vitamin A is important for vision as it works on the retina. Deficiency of vitamin A leads to poor night time vision. Bone metabolism: Osteoclasts are irregular shaped giant cells that break down or reabsorbs the bone. Vitamin A is important for bone metabolism and bone remodeling. It is also important for differentiation of immune cells and maintains skin health. Vitamin A is found in dairy product, sweet potatoes, beef liver and raw carrots. Vitamin B6 Vitamin B6 is important for synthesis of mood boosting hormones such as serotonin, it makes you feel good. It also plays a role in hemoglobin synthesis. The red blood cells contain large quantities of proteins called hemoglobin which bind to oxygen loosely and reversibly. Oxygen molecules bind at the center of each heme molecule. Heme makes it possible for the red blood cells to pick up oxygen for delivery to the cells of the body. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to the body tissues. White blood cells from our immune system and help the body to fight against infection and foreign materials. Vitamin B6 is found in foods like: bananas, ham, chicken, potatoes, eggs, salmon, tuna, apricot, pistachios, sunflower seed, and peanut butter. Causes of Vitamin B6 deficiency are isoniazid intake which is used in treatment of TB, and L-dopa which is used in treatment of Parkinson's disease. Vitamin B6 deficiency may lead to sideroblastic anemia, chelosis or stomatitis which is cracking of lips and corners of the mouth, convulsions, altered touch sensation and mania. In orthopedics, Vitamin B6 is used as an adjuvant treatment in cubital tunnel syndrome and carpal tunnel syndromes. It is given orally 50 mgs, twice daily Vitamin B12 Whenever you think of vitamin B12 think neuropathy and pernicious anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency takes years to develop. Vitamin A is stored in the liver for 6 months. Vitamin D is stored in the skin and fat for 3 months. Vitamin B12 is found in beef liver, oysters, and tuna. Vitamin B12 leads to accumulation of methylmalonic acid. Vitamin B12 leads to peripheral neuropathy because it affects myelin formation. Vitamin B12 levels should be obtained in patients with peripheral sensory neuropathy (normal values are 200-900 picograms per milliliter). Also, perform tolerance test to rule out diabetes as a cause of peripheral neuropathy. Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to peripheral sensory neuropathy, megaloblastic anemia, muscle weakness and movement problems, and memory problems. Risk factors for developing Vitamin B12 deficiency include pernicious anemia, gastric resection surgery, chronic pancreatitis, severe malnutrition and vegan diet. In the gut, Vitamin B12 is carried on intrinsic factor which protects it from proteolytic enzymes. Intrinsic factor also helps the vitamin to be absorbed in the terminal ileum. The nervous system is affected in three parts: 1. The dorsal column: Affection of the dorsal column leads to problems in positions and vibration sensation as well as sensory ataxia. 2. The lateral corticospinal tracts: Affection of the lateral corticospinal tracts leads to hyperreflexia, spasticity and pathological reflexes which are all signs of upper motor neuron involvement. 3. Peripheral nerves: Axonal degeneration of the peripheral nerves leads to numbness and paresthesia. In pernicious anemia labs will show MCV greater than 100, low hemoglobin concentration and low RBC count. Vitamin C Vitamin C is found in citrus fruit, and green leafy vegetables. Vitamin C is important for proper collagen synthesis. It is required for neurotransmitter production. It protects the capillary lining of blood vessels and inhibits vascular permeability. It is an antioxidant and enables iron absorption from the intestine. It actively protects against osteoporosis. Vitamin C deficiency may lead to scurvy. Scurvy leads to bleeding gums, loose teeth, bleeding in the skin and mucous membranes. Low vitamin C leads to defective collagen synthesis, fragile capillaries, abnormal gum bleeding, abnormal bone formation at the growth plate with widening of the zone of provisional calcification. Vitamin C is used in orthopedics to reduce the risk of RSD following reduction and internal fixation of distal radial fractures. The dosage used is 500 mg daily for 50 days beginning the day after surgery.
