What is PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT? What does PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT mean? PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT meaning - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT definition - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Professional development is learning to earn or maintain professional credentials such as academic degrees to formal coursework, conferences and informal learning opportunities situated in practice. It has been described as intensive and collaborative, ideally incorporating an evaluative stage. There are a variety of approaches to professional development, including consultation, coaching, communities of practice, lesson study, mentoring, reflective supervision and technical assistance. The University of Management and Technology notes the use of the phrase "professional development" from 1857 onwards. In the training of school staff in the United States, "he need for professional development came to the forefront in the 1960's". A wide variety of people, such as teachers, military officers and non-commissioned officers, health care professionals, lawyers, accountants and engineers engage in professional development. Individuals may participate in professional development because of an interest in lifelong learning, a sense of moral obligation, to maintain and improve professional competence, to enhance career progression, to keep abreast of new technology and practices, or to comply with professional regulatory requirements. Many American states have professional development requirements for school teachers. For example, Arkansas teachers must complete 60 hours of documented professional development activities annually. Professional development credits are named differently from state to state. For example, teachers: in Indiana are required to earn 90 Continuing Renewal Units (CRUs) per year; in Massachusetts, teachers need 150 Professional Development Points (PDPs); and in Georgia, must earn 10 Professional Learning Units (PLUs). American and Canadian nurses, as well as those in the United Kingdom, have to participate in formal and informal professional development (earning Continuing education units, or CEUs) in order to maintain professional registration. In a broad sense, professional development may include formal types of vocational education, typically post-secondary or poly-technical training leading to qualification or credential required to obtain or retain employment. Professional development may also come in the form of pre-service or in-service professional development programs. These programs may be formal, or informal, group or individualized. Individuals may pursue professional development independently, or programs may be offered by human resource departments. Professional development on the job may develop or enhance process skills, sometimes referred to as leadership skills, as well as task skills. Some examples for process skills are 'effectiveness skills', 'team functioning skills', and 'systems thinking skills'. Professional development opportunities can range from a single workshop to a semester-long academic course, to services offered by a medley of different professional development providers and varying widely with respect to the philosophy, content, and format of the learning experiences. Some examples of approaches to professional development include: Case Study Method – The case method is a teaching approach that consists in presenting the students with a case, putting them in the role of a decision maker facing a problem (Hammond 1976) – See Case method. Consultation – to assist an individual or group of individuals to clarify and address immediate concerns by following a systematic problem-solving process. Coaching – to enhance a person’s competencies in a specific skill area by providing a process of observation, reflection, and action. Communities of Practice – to improve professional practice by engaging in shared inquiry and learning with people who have a common goal Lesson Study – to solve practical dilemmas related to intervention or instruction through participation with other professionals in systematically examining practice Mentoring – to promote an individual's awareness and refinement of his or her own professional development by providing and recommending structured opportunities for reflection and observation.....

In this presentation held at Qatar Academy Primary School, Mihai Catrinar and Carmen Fernandez shared various tools and strategies of how to integrate technology in the Physical Education or Spanish lessons. They have been collaborating during an integration unit about ocean animals with pre 5 students. Carmen recorded the students pronouncing various names of ocean animals in Spanish. With these files she created QR codes. Mihai posted the QR codes in the gym and the students had to scan them with iPads, listen to the recordings, and then imitate the moves of those animals for a number of times.

At ISTE 2016 opening general session, we announced our plan with ISTE to combine and expand a host of world-class initiatives to ensure educators and school leaders around the world have access to school planning and professional development resources. This collaboration stems from a shared belief that technology has the power to transform learning, and can do so most effectively when it’s embedded in how a school or educator thinks about and drives new learning opportunities. "This new collaboration between ISTE and Microsoft springs from our shared, genuine commitment to have a real impact on learners around the globe,” said ISTE CEO Brian Lewis. “It will leverage our respective strengths and allow our substantive work on student empowerment, digital citizenship, education leadership and professional learning to be multiplied." As part of this new multi-project initiative, we'll work with ISTE to bring together resources from the education and technology fields to inspire educators to design and develop schools where technology is woven into the culture and environment. Three of these resources will include: •ISTE and Microsoft Blueprint for School Transformation: To support leaders as they pioneer innovation and digital transformation, Microsoft and ISTE will align respective professional development pathways supporting leadership, policy and 21st century pedagogy. Mapping of the ISTE Essential Conditions and Microsoft Transformation Framework has already begun and will provide common language and direction for future shared work. •Leadership courses designed in accordance with this blueprint: Microsoft has also partnered with edX, the nonprofit online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT, and top global university innovation and education experts to develop a series of new courses in the areas of change leadership, design thinking, gameful learning, deep learning, and ambitious teaching and learning. They will be developed with the support and guidance of ISTE and Microsoft and will contain renowned curriculum created by leading edX university partners. The first course will be available for enrollment on edx.org starting in September 2016 and is scheduled to begin in December 2016. Additional courses will begin by March 2017. Stay updated about this offering at http://aka.ms/edx/schools. •Tools to help streamline the development of 21st century schools: Microsoft and ISTE plan to partner with schools around the world to further develop new Microsoft Showcase Schools, a global community of more than 600 schools engaged in digital transformation to improve learning and teaching. This community of schools plans to have additional support to further incorporate the ISTE Standards for learning, teaching and leading in the digital age and use the organization’s resources such as the ISTE Lead & Transform Diagnostic Tool and Microsoft’s Self Reflection Tool. “Microsoft’s focus on supporting education transformation has great synergy with the work of ISTE,” said Anthony Salcito, vice president of Worldwide Education, Microsoft. “We are proud of the collaboration announced today and the opportunity we have together to empower students, educators and school leaders globally to achieve more.”

Higher Education has changed drastically. Today's career colleges, schools, and universities are now serving more non-traditional, adult learners than ever. New technologies have disrupted traditional education models and student engagement methods and changes to education legislation from the Federal Department of Education have had an impact on operations from student enrollment and financial aid to retention and career services. Clearly, higher education must adapt and training will play a critical role for those institutions who wish to lead and inspire new generations of learners.

Ms. Swati Salunkhe renowned Career Counselor is talking about how to select a career. She talks about the factors that influence a student’s decision while choosing a career. She mentions it is difficult for an individual to be like others as everyone is different and needs to know their strengths and weaknesses. It is important to know yourself better in terms of different parameters like Aptitude, Interest, Intelligence and Personality. This will help you choose the next course of action for your career. To know yourself can be difficult at times she recommends to seek help of professional career counselors who can identify these strengths and weakness through scientific methods like psychometric assessments and career counseling. Students should approach a qualified and experienced Psychologist to undergo these tests which will help them choose a course of study. While choosing the courses students should keep in mind the process for admission and colleges where these courses are available. She highlights that students should also know the alternate career routes, industry acceptability and the need for a backup plan for a successful career. She also highlights the importance of the resources available i.e the finances required for various courses and the time. It is in an individual’s hand to determine the scope and cannot limit it to a course or career.

The changing landscape in higher education is changing the way we teach. It is important to help students learn how to think, under pressure, and think critically like a scientist. Seven methods of learning include teaching, practice, discussion, demonstration, audio-visual, reading, and lecture. Although lecture is often the primary method of instruction, only 5% of the lecture is retained. iClickers, annotated PowerPoint, and recorded lectures are options for increasing opportunities for students to use those methods of learning that help them retain the most information – teaching, practice, discussion, and demonstration. Several UDL techniques are discussed for addressing accessibility issues in documents provided to students in electronic format as well as how lecture capture enhances students’ access to information. Jennifer McLean, assistant professor microbiology and immunology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, presented this information to faculty working on the Consortium for Healthcare Education Online project at the CHEO Discipline Panel Faculty Professional Development Workshop – By Design: Taking ALL Allied Health Students Across the Finish Line, on May 14, 2015. The event was hosted by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) and was held at its SHEPC Learning Center in Boulder, CO. The CHEO project is funded by a U.S. Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant.
