The Point. Segment 1, Part 1 ~ What's the Big Idea? Planning a 1st Grade UBD Unit The Point is filmed in collaboration with LISDTV & LISD Director of CEMaT, Mellissa Wilson. The aim of the program is to engage, challenge, and inspire the educational community to reflect upon the WHAT & HOW of this thing we call "school." Segment 1, Part 2, provides insight into what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like to plan a concept-driven, big idea UBD unit from scratch. The first grade team from Madison Elementary in Adrian, Michigan, works with Mellissa to begin the work. Other educational communities can use this video to facilitate this work in their own building.

Join me as I discuss my poor curriculum design process as a new teacher and how I eventually developed those skills; which helped me later on in my career (as a district instructional specialist and campus assistant principal). Furthermore, the framework serves as an excellent curriculum model to assist you in the development of your yearly curriculum. The book goes into much more detail than what I shared in the video. For example, the book describes how teachers should unpack (and repack) their learning standards. It also talks about mistakes of curriculum development - coverage and activity-oriented design; which is referred to as the "twin sins" of traditional curriculum design. While my subject area is science, the book is also packed with K-12 curriculum desing and lesson plan ideas. It also includes examples and a few templates (additional templates are available in supplementary UbD resources). UbD is a great book for those interested in creating lessons (their own or for others) and highlights several key ideas in regard to the art of teaching (and developing pedagogy).

This video walks the viewer through the UbD method for course or unit design for the teaching of any subject matter for grades K-12 or higher education. Each stage of the UbD template is briefly described and viewers will see an example template created for a creative writing unit on market research and submitting fiction for publication.

In this video, I talk/walk teachers through my thinking process of mapping out a unit about Holocaust representation with Night and Life is Beautiful to illustrate the initial phase of pacing a unit -- with lots of room for revision and detail.

Part 2 of 2 Implementing Common Core (worksheets). Quick lesson planning processes (UbD) are used in combination with other strategies that produce results, including using informational text structures as a design element. These processes and tools address the most common point of failure, preventing us from implementing new standards or strategies. Create better lessons, and encourage collaborative learning teams, while supporting Common Core ELA with this type of teacher professional development. As teachable curriculum becomes ready, so do teachers.

Designing a unit Career Stage - Graduate Main Focus area - 3.2 Secondary Focus areas - 3.5 & 3.6 School - Darwin High School A pre-service teacher at Darwin High school is given the opportunity to design a unit of study for her students. Her unit on how the media uses gender stereotyping to market toys draws upon her academic expertise in the field of Psychology. Designing an interconnected lesson sequence allows her to understand the complex roles of teachers, and to realise that their role extends beyond the classroom. She understands that without extensive thinking and pre-planning, quality learning is not guaranteed. Designing a unit shows her importance of prior learning to the sequential development of knowledge, skills and understanding. It also allows her to take a longer term view of learning. http://www.aitsl.edu.au/australian-professional-standards-for-teachers/illustrations-of-practice/detail?id=IOP00228

Backward design Career Stage - Proficient Main Focus area - 1.2 Secondary Focus area - 5.1 School - Dominic College (Primary) A grade 4 teacher attempts to find the right balance between allowing her students to follow their own interests in the learning process and in actively directing learning to ensure that learning goals are met within the prescribed time. She describes her approach to planning a unit on 'Forces' in Physical sciences using 'backward design'. Professional learning that she attended with teachers from other Catholic schools in Hobart shaped her approach. In using this learning theory as an aid to lesson planning, she found that she could manage the learning more effectively, and that her students achieved the anticipated learning goals. http://www.aitsl.edu.au/australian-professional-standards-for-teachers/illustrations-of-practice/detail?id=IOP00282

Presented by Donna Clementi and Laura Terrill From 2013 ACTFL Convention & World Languages Expo Participants examine guidelines for choosing unit themes suggested in Keys to Planning for Student Learning. They discuss the degree to which their school's or district's current textbook or curriculum themes meet the suggested guidelines. Through examination of a model unit of instruction, participants also identify how the 5 Cs of the National Standards are represented in the unit. You will learn how 21st Century Skills and Common Core Standards are integrated into the unit plan. The concept of a "toolbox" to complete the unit plan is explained. Essential language functions and vocabulary for the toolbox that help students successfully meet the unit goals will be discussed. Sample learning activities to strengthen cultural understandings and deepen content knowledge while building communication skills will be shared. Finally, the presenters will address how Open Source sharing of unit plans is facilitated by common templates and common definitions of pedagogical terms.

The Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units offers instructional modules on the basic concepts and elements of Understanding by Design (UbD), the "backward design" approach used by thousands of educators to create curriculum units and assessments that focus on developing students' understanding of important ideas. The eight modules are organised around the UbD Template Version 2.0 and feature components similar to what is typically provided in a UbD design workshop, including: Discussion and explanation of key ideas in the module; Guiding exercises, worksheets and design tips; Examples of unit designs; Review criteria with prompts for self-assessment; and a list of resources for further information. www.hbe.com.au http://www.hbe.com.au/the-understanding-by-design-guide-to-creating-high-quality-units.html http://www.hbe.com.au/jay-mctighe.html
