On people's request, Amazon link to buy walnuts: https://amzn.to/2wEMvgr Respecting your feedback, here is the commentary for the remedy in English so that you can translate into your local language: For each cycle, you will need 1 litre vodka (500 ml won't last you the month) and 30 walnuts. Add inner partitions from 30 walnuts to the vodka and leave for 21 days in the refrigerator or a cold-dark place. Take 2 tea spoons (approx. 10ml) of this solution 3 times a day (it does not matter whether you eat meals or you are fasting) for 1 month. This will complete the first cycle. You will need to do this for 3 cycles so you will need to make 3 bottles of this tincture (hence need 3 litres of vodka and 90 walnuts in total) and take a 10 days break in between each cycle. You can continue to take any medicine that you are currently taking for your thyroid issues in the same manner during the first cycle, half the dosage of your medicine after the first cycle and completely stop your medicine after the second cycle. Please let me know if you have more questions. You can write to me for personal queries/help on firstname.lastname@example.org and I will reply at the earliest. I hear this complaint every day, yet the solution is SO simple. The Undoctored lifestyle is magnificently effective to achieve weight loss, prevent or reverse hundreds of health conditions, and to free you from prescription medications. But many people who take levothyroxine (Synthroid), the T4 thyroid hormone, report NO weight loss on the program, along with persistent abnormal symptoms such as low energy, dry skin, and thinning hair, even depression. This is not due to the failure of the program, but is due to the lack of the T3 thyroid hormone, the truly active form of thyroid hormone. Learn why addressing and correcting the T3 thyroid hormone is crucial and allows Undoctored program benefits to unfold. But you may have to fire your doctor and find one who is better informed on thyroid health to get this important component of health done right. About Undoctored: We are entering a new age in which the individual has astounding power over health--but don't count on the doctor or healthcare system to tell you this. We draw from the health information of the world, collaborate, share experiences, collect data, and show how to apply new health tools to achieve levels of health that you may have thought unattainable. We do all this at a time when conventional healthcare costs have become crippling. The result: personal health that is SUPERIOR to that obtained through conventional means. Based on the book Undoctored: Why Health Care Has Failed You and How You Can Become Smarter Than Your Doctor Available in all major bookstores and Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Undoctored-Health-Failed-Become-Smarter/dp/1623368669

Learn How To Cure Hypothyroidism At: http://www.HypothyroidRevolution.org In alternative medicine, there is very little difference in curing hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. This is because the treatment involves assisting the thyroid to heal, in either case. Those with hyperthyroidism should not use iodine, because it could overdrive the thyroid, worsening the condition. Curing thyroid disease requires a long-term commitment for a period of at least a year. Creating this problem took years of self-poisoning, so fixing it is neither quick, nor easy. Hypothyroidism medications are addictive, and the body becomes reliant on them, which is why the mainstream establishment maintains that people must take them forever. Those who have been taking hypothyroidism medications for years must slowly wean themselves from the drugs. Abruptly stopping these medications will result in extreme fatigue, and additional thyroid problems. Treatment Recommendations Eliminate and discard all non-stick cookware Eliminate Soy - Soy suppresses thyroid function, imbalances hormones, and it has been shown to cause goiters (an enlargement of the thyroid gland) in previously healthy individuals, which shows that it disrupts iodine usage. Adhere to an Alkaline Diet - This is extremely helpful when curing any chronic disease. Reference the Body pH and Disease article to guide you. Balance Estrogen Levels (Women) - Excess estrogen slows down the thyroid gland. This means eliminating birth control medications, increasing the fiber in the diet, and avoiding all non-organic meats. Growth hormones in meats lead to imbalanced hormones. Reduce dairy intake, because milk often contains lots of estrogen; primarily because cows are milked frequently during pregnancy. Exercise - Find a physical activity that is fun, and do it often. We believe that exercise could half the cure time in some cases, and curing is not possible without it. Hemp Fiber - This is a broad spectrum supplement and a mild laxative. L-Tyrosine - Tyrosine is a natural amino acid which helps the body produce its own thyroid hormone. This is also known to help with the depression, which usually accompanies hypothyroidism. Most naturopaths recommend that 500 mg. be taken 2-3 times daily. L-Arginine - Arginine is known to stimulate the thyroid and its hormones. It also improves immune function, improves fertility, and alleviates erectile dysfunction. Iodine - The thyroid needs iodine to function properly, and lots of people now suffer from iodine deficiencies. To test yourself, place some iodine (we use 2%) on your stomach. Make a dot the size of a silver dollar (or twice the size of a British 50p). If it disappears within 12 hours, then you are iodine deficient. Keep adding iodine in increasing amounts, until it no longer disappears in a 12-hour period. This works due to the fact that the body absorbs iodine at the rate at which it is needed. Do not use povidone iodine and do not orally consume iodine. This is especially an important precaution for those with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Avoid all sources of fluoride - As already mentioned, fluoride suppresses the thyroid, and is likely to be the leading cause of hypothyroidism. Drink spring water, avoid soft drinks, use fluoride-free toothpaste, use a shower filter, and throw away non-stick cookware. Both coffee and tea naturally contain fluoride, so use iodine to compensate if these drinks are indispensable. Eat a natural diet - To help the body to heal itself, remove burdens on its immune system. This means that all processed foods, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, white flour, white sugar, table salt, hydrogenated oils, aluminum, high fructose corn syrup, and etcetera should be eliminated from the diet. Organic food is the ideal. Do not trust marketing that reads "All Natural", because this phrase is unregulated, so anyone can use it for anything. Read labels carefully. Chlorophyll - Supplementing with chlorophyll provides essential copper, helps oxygenate the body, builds healthy red blood cells, and it overall assists with skin health. Chlorophyll is a safe method of orally supplementing with copper. Those who are using our Colloidal Copper Lotion are unlikely to need more copper. Zinc and Selenium: Studies indicate that severe zinc or selenium deficiencies can cause decreased thyroid hormone levels. Never take zinc on an empty stomach. Brazil nuts are high in both zinc and selenium. Coconut Oil: Buy organic, cold-pressed, coconut oil from a health food store. Take around 1 teaspoon of it daily. You can also use it to cook with, but be warned that it smokes at low cooking temperatures, so it should only be used for low-heat cooking. Coconut oil speeds the metabolism, encourages production of the thyroid hormone, and kills candida yeast.

Take Dr. Berg's Body Type Quiz: http://bit.ly/BodyTypeQuiz Dr. Berg talks about the thyroid gland and what could be the potential thyroid problems (it is mostly secondary). The thyroid symptoms include hair loss, dry hair, loss of eyebrows, abnormal thyroid glands and hormones, all these are caused due to low thyroid levels in the body. Dr. Berg discusses about the major thyroid problems and their associated thyroid treatment. The main cause for thyroid issues is liver and gall bladder. The next possible cause of thyroid symptoms could be the adrenals. In this case you can have either high quantity of thyroid (hyper thyroid) or low quantity of thyroid (hypo thyroid), both if which are triggered by high amount of stress levels. The third most probable cause could be ovaries. In this case the estrogen depletes the activity of thyroid over time which causes a thyroid disorder. It is very rare that you have primary thyroid problem. Dr. Berg explains the root cause and how to make your thyroid come back. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive and doesn’t properly make or release thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland normally releases many crucial hormones that travel through the bloodstream to reach receptors found throughout the whole body. So a disturbance in thyroid function can cause widespread, noticeable health problems. According to the American Thyroid Association, 12 percent of Americans will develop a thyroid condition at some point in their lives. (1) Some estimates suggest up to 40 percent of the population suffers from at least some level of underactive thyroid.Watch this video with Dr. Josh Axe and Jordan Rubin to learn more about the best essential oils, vitamins, and supplements to help those who suffer with hypothyroidism. Low thyroid problems are also commonly called underactive thyroid problems. The medical name for this condition is hypothyroidism. The thyroid controls multiple bodily functions. One of its most important is regulating metabolism and metabolic processes. Someone with low thyroid problems experiences a "lowering" of metabolic function, characterized by reduced energy levels, sluggishness and listlessness. Weight gain is common. One of the most common low thyroid problems is a condition known as Hashimoto thyroid disease, or simply Hashimoto's. This is an autoimmune disorder. In other words, the body's own immune system attacks the thyroid and damages thyroid tissue. As a result, the thyroid produces fewer hormones. Causes of low thyroid levels Low thyroid levels can be caused by the following conditions. Tissue loss Hyperthyroidism is sometimes treated with radiation, which can cause tissue destruction. Surgery Thyroid gland removal surgery can also cause hypothyroidism. Exposure to abnormal amounts of iodides Iodides can be found in cold and sinus medicines, a heart medication known as amiodarone, or certain contrast dyes given before some X-rays. Lithium Lithium is frequently used as a treatment for manic-depression. Hypothyroidism may be a possible side effect. Antithyroid antibodies Certain physical diseases and conditions tend to cause hypothyroidism. Diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic hepatitis have antibodies that reduce thyroid hormone production. Thyroid hormone production deficiencies When the thyroid isn't producing enough hormones, the thyroid gland may begin to enlarge. This condition is called a goiter. It's often visible as swelling in the front of the neck. Low Thyroid Symptomss The human body has to produce a certain level of thyroid hormones to maintain energy levels. Therefore, someone with low thyroid problems will often feel fatigued and sluggish. Signs and symptoms of low thyroid may be different at various ages. Newborns and infants will probably have the following symptoms: constipation, poor feeding, jaundice (a yellowing of the skin and eyes), signs of tiredness and irritability. Some of the same signs and symptoms will appear in adults, but there are also likely to be others: a reduction of intellectual ability constipation deeper, hoarse voice depression dry skin fatigue and exhaustion hair loss increased weight lack of appetite low tolerance to cold temperatures puffiness around the eyes Treating low thyroid problems is relatively simple. A thyroid hormone pill known as Levothyroxine, when taken once a day, will usually relieve symptoms. Work with your doctor to determine the proper dosage. Improvement is possible in approximately 7 days or even less. But generally, it takes about a month.

The TRUTH About Hypothyroidism, Heart Disease, and Cancer… Every cell of your body relies on thyroid hormone to produce energy and to function properly. When you become hypothyroid and you can’t get the thyroid hormone that you need to your cells to keep them happy, it can negatively affect every cell, tissue, organ, and system within your body. Billions of dollars are spent every year trying to develop drugs and solve the riddles of many major diseases like heart disease and cancer. Despite an endless budget and an endless amount of resources, modern medicine continues to struggle and get nowhere in the “fight” against disease. The rates of all major diseases including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes continue to rise year after year after year. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates the number of cancer related deaths will double over the next 20 years. Yet, modern medicine continues to turn a blind eye to the research of some of the most brilliant scientists of the 20th and 21st centuries. TRUTH: Hypothyroidism Causes Heart Disease… Dr. Broda Barnes had proven the hypothyroidism heart disease connection as far back as the 1930’s. He even showed that heart disease could be reversed simply by correcting hypothyroidism. Yet, modern medicine simply ignores his research like it doesn’t even exist. Dozens of research studies since then have continued to prove the same connection, time and time again… RUTH: Hypothyroidism Drives Cancer Development… This trend of scientific ignorance is now continuing with cancer research as well. The work of other brilliant scientists, like Otto Warburg, who won the Nobel Prize almost a century ago for discovering and demonstrating the cellular defect that causes cancer, continues to be ignored by modern medicine to this day while more than a half a million people die of cancer every single year. Yet, even today research continues to prove what Otto Warburg discovered so many decades ago; hypothyroidism’s role in the development of cancer. TRUTH: If You Value Your Health Then You MUST Address Your Thyroid! Hopefully, you’re beginning to understand the significance of hypothyroidism and how it affects every single aspect of your health. Simply ignoring hypothyroidism or playing it off as something that isn’t important “right now” is a serious mistake that can have severe long term health consequences. That’s like ignoring a little roof leak instead of fixing it. Before you know you’re stuck in a house that invested with a major mold problem and you become sicker and sicker. Fixing the leak when you found it would have saved you a lot of time, money, and effort, not to mention the years of health problems. Your thyroid works the same way. You can change your future and your health from developing into a major medical complications by simply fixing the problem today. But, heart disease and cancer are not the only diseases that hypothyroidism leads to. Research continues to show hypothyroidism’s involvement in a number of diseases that all stem from the same metabolic dysfunction that hypothyroidism causes, including some of the fastest growing diseases in the world, like diabetes. While modern medicine continues to rely on the same illogical and poor thyroid testing methods, millions of people are misdiagnosed and wrongfully led to believe that their health issues stem from something other than hypothyroidism. Luckily, you’re smart enough not to fall into that trap. Organic Icelandic Sea Kelp: https://bit.ly/2OCjg9b Take Dr. Berg's Advanced Evaluation Quiz: http://bit.ly/EvalQuiz Your report will then be sent via email analyzing 104 potential symptoms, giving you a much deeper insight into the cause-effect relationship of your body issues. It's free and very enlightening. Dr. Berg talks about Intermittent Fasting and your thyroid. Many people are concerned about intermittent fasting because they think they will lower their calories and damage or slow the already slow thyroid. As long as you keep the calories the same or keep your nutrients the same and eat less frequent meals - you will not slow the thyroid. In fact, intermittent fasting can help convert T4 to T3 improving the thyroid. I do recommend doing a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. Selenium (Nutritional or Brewers Yeast), and iodine is best for the thyroid, and I recommend taking sea help. Make sure your sea kelp is organic is clean. You may want to avoid doing too many cruciferous vegetables as they could slow the thyroid even more. Vitamin A and D are also vital for the thyroid and "Virgin Cod Liver Oil" is the best for that. The thyroid gland is found in the neck, below the thyroid cartilage(which forms the Adam's apple). The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones. It participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, the principal ones being triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (sometimes referred to as tetraiodothyronine (T4)). These hormones regulate the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. T3 and T4 are synthesized from iodine and tyrosine. The thyroid also produces calcitonin, which plays a role in calcium homeostasis. People can suffer from hyperthyroidism. An overactive thyroid, is defined as an overproduction of the thyroid hormones T3and T4. This condition is most commonly caused by the development of Graves' disease, an autoimmune disease in which anomalous antibodies stimulate the thyroid to secrete excessive quantities of thyroid hormones. The disease can progress to the formation of a toxic goiter as a result of thyroid growth in response to a lack of negative feedback mechanisms. It presents with symptoms such as a thyroid goiter, protruding eyes (exophthalmo), palpitations, excessive sweating, diarrhea, weight loss, muscle weakness and unusual sensitivity to heat. The appetite is often increased. People can also suffer hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is the underproduction of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Hypothyroid disorders may occur as a result of # Congenital thyroid abnormalities # Autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, # Iodine deficiency # The removal of the thyroid following surgery to treat severe hyperthyroidism and/or thyroid cancer. Typical symptoms are abnormal weight gain, tiredness, baldness, cold intolerance, and bradycardia. Hypothyroidism is treated with hormone replacement therapy, such as levothyroxine, which is typically required for the rest of the patient's life. Yoga for Thyroid Problems: Practicing Yoga for thyroid problems is a natural way to get rid of this medical condition. By practicing yoga regularly, you see normalcy in the production and release of the thyroid hormone. This ensures you reduce the dependency of thyroid medication. However, before starting any physical activity or exercise, always consult a physician. These asanas have been performed by a trained yoga instructor. You mentioned that you and your husband have been trying to conceive for 5 months now, and you're wondering if that's normal and if there's certain parts of your medical history that might make it more difficult for you to get pregnant. I think it's helpful for couples to know that before they start the process of conceiving, that it can take up to 6 months normally, because in order for pregnancy to happen, egg and sperm need to meet, and that means that intercourse needs to be timed with ovulation. And even when things are timed just right, the chances of pregnancy are only about 30% to 35% - it's not 100%. So a lot of things have to go right, and that's why most couples have to try for several months before the woman actually gets pregnant. So the fact that you've been trying for 5 months is very normal. Keep trying to time intercourse with ovulation, and statistically speaking, it should happen in the next few months for you. But you did mention that you have a thyroid disorder. And that can definitely play into it, and this is something you want to make sure is in control before you conceive. So I suggest calling your doctor, letting them know that you're trying to have a baby, and based on their knowledge of your circumstances, they'll decide if further investigation or treatment is necessary before you get pregnant. And here's why. In the first place, it can affect your ability to conceive if your thyroid hormone is off, it might make it so you don't ovulate or have regular periods, which would make it difficult. But then if you do get pregnant, if you have abnormal thyroid levels, it can affect the development of the baby. So that's why you want to make sure that your thyroid hormone is in a normal range before you get pregnant. Good luck with it, and if you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

6 Thyroid Pain Symptoms | You Should Not Ignore Descriptions of thyroid pain symptoms: About 4.6 percent of the United States population suffers from underactive thyroid . The risk for developing hypothyroidism and infertility is higher in women over age 50 and postpartum females. If you have multiple signs and symptoms of this problem, ask your doctor to check your thyroid hormone levels and get treatment of thyroid. Here are the signs and symptoms that you have an underactive thyroid. 1. Unexplained Weight Gain Weight gain without any change in diet or physical activity may indicate low levels of thyroid hormones. These hormones help regulate basal metabolism and thermogenesis as well as the metabolism of fats and glucose. An underactive thyroid contributes to a lower metabolic rate, which may cause excess weight gain. If you have unexplained weight gain, it is essential to consult your doctor to determine the exact cause and get hypothyroidism treatment weight loss. 2. Dry and Flaky Skin If you are following your usual beauty and skin care regimen and haven’t changed any of the products you use but your skin is dry and itchy, it could be a symptom of hypothyroidism or thyroid dry skin. The change in skin texture and appearance can be due to reduced blood circulation, one of the side effects of having low thyroid hormones. In addition, a slowed metabolism due to low thyroid hormone production can reduce sweating. Without proper sweating, the skin becomes dry and flaky. As these skin signs are rather nonspecific and often subtle, people tend to ignore them or attribute them to other causes. It is best to consult your doctor to see if there is an underlying health condition causing these skin changes. 3. Muscle Soreness and Pain People suffering from hypothyroidism often experience muscle weakness, pain, stiffness, or cramping. There may also be general joint pain. Low metabolism disrupts how your body burns energy, which can affect how your muscles feel after doing your regular exercises. Low thyroid often increases inflammation that may be contributing to your muscle and joint pain. In fact, about 40 percent of the hypothyroid patients had predominantly sensory signs of a sensorimotor axonal neuropathy early in the course of thyroid disease. 4. Hair Loss hypothyroidism hair loss and Proper functioning of the thyroid gland is essential for the development and maintenance of the hair follicles, and an underactive thyroid can result in significant changes in hair growth and texture. It may also affect eyebrows and body hair. The thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) modulate several aspects of hair anatomy, from the hair growth cycle to the hair’s pigmentation. If you are worried about hair loss and other hair-related issues, see your doctor to get your thyroid checked. 5. Constant Fatigue and Tiredness Fatigue and extreme tiredness are very common in people who have an underactive thyroid. When low thyroid hormones flow through the blood, cells do not function properly, leading to less energy, fatigue and constant tiredness. These symptoms persist even after getting proper sleep and rest. A 2012 study published in the European Journal of Endocrinology notes that autoimmune hypothyroidism patients had significantly higher levels of fatigue as compared with differentiated thyroid carcinoma patients health thyroid. 6. Menstrual and Fertility Problems Women with hypothyroidism may experience menstrual as well as fertility problems. Thyroid hormones have a great influence on meenstruation, thyroid pregnancy, lactation and even uterine involution after childbirth. In fact, the study puts emphasis on the assessment of thyroid function in all patients with menstrual disorders to avoid unnecessary interventions like curettage and hysterectomy. Infertility can also be due to undiagnosed thyroid conditions. For any change in menstrual pattern as well as problems becoming pregnant, it is important to get your thyroid checked. Does Levothyroxine cause weight gain? That is the question I am going to answer in this video today. Here is a common problem: patients with hypothyroidism present to their doctor, get put on T4 medication like Levothyroxine or Synthroid and they CONTINUE to gain weight - despite no change in their diet or exercise routine. How can this be? In this video, I answer what I think is going on in many patients and it has to do with T4 to reverse T3 conversion when certain patients are given medications that contain T4 only. In the setting of inflammation, trauma, infections, liver/kidney issues, low-calorie diets, and nutrient deficiencies the body can take T4 and convert it into the thyroid blocking metabolite reverse T3. High levels of reverse T3 then compete for binding at the T3 cellular receptor site and put the brakes on thyroid and metabolic function. So how do you treat this condition? Most patients will need medication containing T3 like natural desiccated thyroid or liothyronine/Cytomel to "flush" the system. I also give several tips that I use in my office to help boost thyroid function if your doctor isn't willing to give you medication with T3 in it: 1. Optimize T4 to T3 conversion - I recommend the combination of zinc plus selenium. 2. Fix your adrenals - Consider using adrenal adaptogens or adrenal glandulars both of which can enhance cortisol and improve your stress response. 3. Add high-intensity exercise - To help lower insulin and leptin levels. 4. Reduce inflammation and find hidden sources of inflammation - the easiest first place to look is at your diet. 5. Lower leptin and insulin levels - It will be impossible to lose weight with leptin resistance and/or insulin resistance and both conditions reduce T4 to T3 conversion. http://drhedberg.com/become-a-patient/ The connection between the thyroid and hair loss may not be immediately clear. But hair loss, also known as alopecia, is one of several classic symptoms of hypothyroidism, along with fatigue, weight gain, constipation, depression, muscle or joint pain, sensitivity to cold and various other issues. The link between a low functioning thyroid and hair loss, and all the other symptoms named above, is that they are all related to a decrease in energy production or metabolism. In this video, I cover the connection between thyroid and hair loss in more detail. You can also learn more on my blog at: http://drhedberg.com/thyroid-and-hair-loss/.

Thyroidectomy::: A thyroidectomy is an operation that involves the surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid gland. Head and Neck or Endocrine Surgeons often perform a thyroidectomy when a patient has thyroid cancer or some other condition of the thyroid gland (such as hyperthyroidism) or goiter. Other indications for surgery include cosmetic (very enlarged thyroid), or symptomatic obstruction (causing difficulties in swallowing or breathing). Thyroidectomy is a common surgical procedure that has several potential complications or sequelae including: temporary or permanent change in voice, temporary or permanently low calcium, need for lifelong thyroid hormone replacement, bleeding, infection, and the remote possibility of airway obstruction due to bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Complications are uncommon when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon. The thyroid produces several hormones, such as thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin. After the removal of a thyroid, patients usually take a prescribed oral synthetic thyroid hormone—levothyroxine (Synthroid)—to prevent hypothyroidism. Less extreme variants of thyroidectomy include: "hemithyroidectomy" (or "unilateral lobectomy")—removing only half of the thyroid "isthmectomy"—removing the band of tissue (or isthmus) connecting the two lobes of the thyroid A "thyroidectomy" should not be confused with a "thyroidotomy" ("thyrotomy"), which is a cutting into (-otomy) the thyroid, not a removal (-ectomy) of it. A thyroidotomy can be performed to get access for a median laryngotomy, or to perform a biopsy. (Although technically a biopsy involves removing some tissue, it is more frequently categorized as an -otomy than an -ectomy because the volume of tissue removed is minuscule.) Traditionally, the thyroid has been removed through a neck incision that leaves a permanent scar. More recently, minimally invasive and "scarless" approaches such as transoral thyroidectomy have become popular in some parts of the world. Indications Thyroid cancer Toxic thyroid nodule (produces too much thyroid hormone) Multinodular goiter (enlarged thyroid gland with many nodules), especially if there is compression of nearby structures Graves' disease, especially if there is exophthalmos (bulging eyes) Thyroid nodule, if fine needle aspirate (FNA) results are unclear

Especially if you have an underactive thyroid. Your metabolism has slowed down and you’re almost always feeling tired. In this video we're looking at 4 steps required to successfully lose weight with hypothyroidism. TITLE - How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism Slide - 1. Optimise Your Thyroid Medication If your medication is not helping to correct thyroid hormone levels, as well as relieve symptoms, then weight loss goes from difficult to impossible. Determine what type of medication is better for you, and also find the optimal dose required. While Levothyroxine is on average more effective, dessicated thyroid is a useful alternative that is reportedly much better tolerated. There is no difference between taking your thyroid hormone meds in the morning vs evening. Choose whatever is easier for you to have it on a fasting stomach. SLIDE 2. Cut Back on Added Sugars and Refined Starches I need to begin with this clarification: Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. That is, they do not make you fat or sick on their own. That said, carbs in the form of added sugars and highly refined starches are unhealthy and unnecessary. They offer almost zero nutritional benefit and make up a large portion of the excess calories we consume. Cutting back on added sugar is the most simple and direct way to cut out excess “empty” calories. This is done by limiting intake of junk foods, flavoured drinks, alcohol, white bread, most cereals, and a good portion of packaged food in your supermarket’s “health food” aisle. Now it’s unrealistic (and unfair) to expect yourself to completely avoid added sugar every day of the year. But you need to begin taking actionable steps that help you cut back and form healthier habits. Start by not having junk foods at home, or at least keep them out of sight in a cupboard you never use. 3. Base Meals Around Vegetables and Protein If you want to lose weight with an underactive thyroid, vegies and a source of protein should be the foundation of almost every meal you make, and plated first when serving. The main benefit of protein is that it’s much more satiating than both fat and carbs. That means it has a unique ability to reduce appetite and therefore your overall caloric intake too. STUDY - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8862477, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15466943 Studies show high protein diets may also reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and cut desire for late-night snacks by half (3, 4). Foods high in protein include meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, legumes (beans) and dairy. Protein is also the muscle-building nutrient, so a high protein diet complements regular exercise. Nutrient-dense meals are even more important for those with hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases, where nutrient absorption and deficiency are more common. Emphasis goes to green leafy vegetables, mushrooms and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. As a general guide, the protein portion of your meal should be the size of your palm, and salad/vegetables the size of your hand. This would leave about 1/4 or less of your plate for healthy carbs if you so choose (such as rice or potato). 4. Increase Your Intake of Selenium and Zinc Selenium and zinc are two critical nutrients directly involved in thyroid function and metabolism. Selenium is an essential mineral that helps the body to recycle iodine. That’s the reason the thyroid has the highest selenium content (per gram of tissue) of all our organs. It’s thought that low selenium levels contribute to hypothyroidism through alternate mechanisms related to iodine. For this reason it’s fundamental to eat a diet that contains many selenium-rich foods, such as: Brazil nuts Tuna and sardines Beef and chicken Eggs Legumes Zinc is an essential mineral required to regulate TSH, which is a hormone from the brain that controls how much thyroid hormone your thyroid produces. In fact, the metabolism of zinc and thyroid hormones are closely interlinked, which is why a deficiency can lead to alopecia (hair loss). While zinc deficiency is very uncommon in the developed world, it’s still recommended to eat a variety of zinc-rich foods (8). This includes: Oysters and shellfish Beef and chicken Legumes, nuts and seeds Milk and yoghurt. Okay so I hope you found those 4 tips useful... In all honesty I've only JUST scratched the surafce here, there are certainly more steps to follow on after these ones. To find out more you can click the link in the description or on the youtube card where I've written about hypothyroidism and much more detail. Dietitian: Joe Leech (MSc Nutrition)

This gland secretes hormones that govern many of the functions in the body, such as the way the body uses energy, consumes oxygen and produces heat. Thyroid disorders typically occur when this gland releases too many or too few hormones. An overactive or underactive thyroid can lead to a wide range of health problems. Hyperthyroidism: Remember, whenever you see: HYPER infront of a word - this means too much of. Hyperthyroidism - this is when the thyroid gland is producing too much thyroid hormone. Causes: There are several causes of hyperthyroidism. Most often, the entire gland is overproducing thyroid hormone. Less commonly, a single nodule is responsible for the excess hormone secretion. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves disease - this is an autoimmune disease where the body makes an antibody called thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin, this causes the thyroid gland to make too much thyroid hormone. Thyroiditis - can be another cause, this is inflammation of the thyroid. Remember whenever you see the words “itis”at the end of a word, this means infection. Functional thyroid tissue producing an excess of thyroid hormone occurs in a number of clinical conditions. Hyperthyroidism may be asymptomatic or present with significant symptoms. a mnemonic to help you remember the potential symptoms of hyperthyroidism is SWEATING. The signs and symptoms can include: Sweating, Weight loss, Emotional instability, Appetite increased, Tremor, Irritability, Nervousness, Gastrointestinal problems. More frequent bowel movements may occur, but diarrhea is uncommon. Treatment for hyperthyroidism usually involves medication to reduce the amount of hormones produced by the thyroid. We will go over the medical treatments in a bit. Hypothyroidism - which is also called myxedema Remember - whenever you see: Hypo in front of a word, this means “not enough of.” Hypothyroidism is a thyroid disorder that occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones, which is the opposite of hyperthyroidism. People with hypothyroidism often have no or only mild symptoms. Numerous symptoms and signs are associated with hypothyroidism, and can be related to the underlying cause, or a direct effect of having not enough thyroid hormones. Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be easily remembered by the mnemonic MOM’S TIRED which includes: Memory loss, gOiter, Menorrhagia - which means abnormally heavy bleeding at menstruation, Skin dryness, Tiredness Intolerance to cold, Restlessness, Energy levels are low and Depression. This condition can be treated using a drug called T4. Most patients must stay on T4 for their entire lives, and must be closely monitored by physicians. T4 is the synthetic form of the thyroid stimulating hormone - It is made by many different pharmaceutical companies, sold under names like: Synthroid, Levothyroxine Sodium and Levoxyl to name a few. Causes: Most of the time Hypothyroidism is caused by inadequate function of the gland itself which is known as primary hypothyroidism. It could be caused by not enough stimulation by thyroid-stimulating hormone - which is known as central hypothyroidism. Primary hypothyroidism is much more common than central hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of primary hypothyroidism. In areas of the world with sufficient dietary iodine, hypothyroidism is most commonly caused by the autoimmune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

7 Health Signs Your Thyroid Isn’t Working Properly 1. Feeling Tired All the Time Have you lost your get-up-and-go, and you haven’t been making any big changes to your lifestyle or diet? Your thyroid gland may be to blame, according to Health.com. It says exhaustion is “strongly linked” to hypothyroidism, when your thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. Telltale signs include being tired when you wake up from a full night’s sleep, it adds. “Too little thyroid hormone coursing through your bloodstream and cells means your muscles aren’t getting that get-going signal,” explains the source. 2. Mood Changes The Mayo Clinic explains that thyroid issues can impact your mood for the worse – namely, you can experience anxiety and depression. Mood changes can occur whether your thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive, it adds. For example, hyperthyroidism is connected to “unusual nervousness,” restlessness, and irritability, while an underachieving thyroid can usually lead to depression, explains the source. 3. Unexplained Weight Gain/Loss If you haven’t changed your diet or exercise habits but notice your weight seems to be dipping or rising unexpectedly, it could be your thyroid (or a number of other potentially serious health issues that you should consult a doctor about). WebMD says an “unexplained change in weight is one of the most common signs of a thyroid disorder,” adding that a gain in weight is usually a result of low thyroid production, while overproduction can actually shed pounds. Hypothyroidism is “far more common,” it adds. 4. Hair Loss The British Thyroid Association says that “prolonged” bouts of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism can indeed cause some hair loss. So if you notice your hair is thinning a bit, it could be genetics, stress – or your endocrine system (which includes your thyroid). If you’re losing hair from a thyroid problem, it will involve loss from the entire scalp rather than particular areas, explains the source – “The hair appears uniformly sparse.” However, the good news is that if your thyroid issue is properly addressed, you’ll probably get back at least some (if not all) of your lovely locks. 5. Lowered Heat/Cold Tolerance If you find yourself removing outer layers of clothing in a room where everyone else seems comfortable, then you might be experiencing heat intolerance due to a thyroid issue. TheInvisibleHypothyroidism.com explains this can be particularly troubling during the summer months. The source explains that if you’re already being medicated for a thyroid issue, it can lead to hyperthyroidism that’s linked to “feeling hot, flushed and anxious.” It adds that people with autoimmune hypothyroidism (such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) can have fluctuating symptoms of heightened heat or cold sensitivity. It will take proper medical tests to pinpoint and correct these problems of your thyroid, which is “basically your body’s thermostat,” it adds. 6. Dryness WebMD says having dry eyes can be the first sign of thyroid problems in some cases. Eye trouble from thyroid dysfunction is commonly linked with Graves’ disease, which is a form of hyperthyroidism, notes the source. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis can sometimes be the culprit too, it adds. Other sources note hypothyroidism can lead to dry skin and dry scalp (along with the hair loss), as well as vaginal dryness (which can also be associated with menopause). 7. Goiters As we mentioned earlier, you normally can’t see or feel your thyroid gland – that is, unless there’s an issue. The Mayo Clinic notes a goiter is the enlargement of your thyroid, though in many cases there’s no pain – although it can cause a cough and interfere with breathing and swallowing.
