Did Your City Make the List? If you have asthma, where you live makes a difference. High pollen counts and smog lead to flare-ups, and controlling symptoms can be tricky if your area is short on doctors. Every year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) looks at these and other medical and environmental factors, then ranks the 100 hardest places in the U.S. for people with asthma. Here are 2015’s top “Asthma Capitals.” Chicago Air quality in Chi-town is poor, thanks to many days of high soot and smog levels. The city has an above-average number of ER visits and deaths because of asthma. Also, 38% of people in the region are uninsured, making it hard for them to control their symptoms or afford medicine. Some asthma inhalers cost close to $800 a month. New Orleans Like other cities on the list, poverty and lack of health insurance factor into NOLA’s higher-than-average death rate due to asthma. But the city’s hot, humid weather also makes breathing harder. Allergens in the environment are a problem here, too. The Big Easy has a high pollen score, and 2005’s Hurricane Katrina left an unhealthy legacy of indoor mold. Both can make breathing easy a serious struggle. Chattanooga, TN Air quality isn’t the problem here. In the past year, Chattanooga has slashed pollution and is now considered one of the nation’s cleanest cities. Still, its nonsmoking laws are weak. Twenty percent of adults and 17% of high school students are smokers. A low number of asthma specialists in the area means ER visits are high. Knoxville, TN The AAFA also lists Knoxville as one of the worst for spring allergies, thanks to high levels of tree and grass pollen. Both can cause asthma symptoms to flare. But that might not be the only reason for a higher-than-average use of asthma medicines here. Studies show a link between weight gain and asthma, and in 2010, nearly two-thirds of people living here were overweight or obese. Augusta, GA Located 150 miles from Atlanta, the “Garden City of the South” is the second largest and second oldest city in Georgia. It’s also the worst in the state for people with asthma. In just 2 years, nearly a dozen children in and around Augusta died from the condition. The area has a high pollen count, and nonsmoking laws also aren’t up to snuff. An effort to ban smoking from bars and public places has failed three times in recent years. Oklahoma City As many as 23% of Sooners living in Oklahoma County have no health insurance. That, along with a serious lack of asthma specialists in the area, can make it hard for people to get the medical care they need. It doesn’t help that Oklahoma City is ranked 15th out of 220 cities for high ozone days. Ozone, which is more common on hot, humid days, can make asthma symptoms worse. Detroit The Motor City has a better-than-average pollen count, and its public smoking laws are on par with the rest of the U.S. Still, asthma rates here are 50% higher than the rest of Michigan. Many residents use quick-relief asthma inhalers, which means their disease isn’t well-controlled. While the air is a risk factor, some experts believe a bigger problem is that many residents are poor and uninsured. Philadelphia Emergency room visits for asthma in the City of Brotherly Love are higher than average. The disease sends more than 16,000 kids to the ER each year. Since many who have the condition here live in low-income neighborhoods, a Community Asthma Prevention Program offers free home visits to explain how to control triggers like house dust and animal dander. Up to 60% of residents with asthma are also allergic to cockroaches. Richmond, VA With its rich Civil War history, this town is popular with vacationers. But it’s not such a great place to live if you have asthma. Smog is a problem, especially in the hot, humid summer months. The city also has higher-than-average rates of people living in poverty and without insurance. They’re more likely to have asthma in part because they’re around more allergens at work and home. Memphis, TN About 14% of kids here have asthma. It causes 40% of stays at the city’s Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. But a lot of ER visits and high use of asthma meds aren’t the only reasons the Home of the Blues nabbed this year’s No. 1 spot. Local steel and food processing plants pollute the air. An above-average pollen count and poor nonsmoking laws don’t help, either. Brighter Spots for Asthma Of the 100 cities ranked, these 10 are the best. For the most part, they have less poverty, better school asthma programs, and better access to health care. But they also have cleaner air and good smoking bans. The result: fewer ER visits and deaths, and easier living with asthma. Here’s the list: 10. Austin, TX 9. Raleigh, NC 8. Sarasota, FL 7. Cape Coral, FL 6. Palm Bay, FL 5. Abilene, TX 4. San Jose, CA 3. Seattle 2. Boise, ID 1. San Francisco

We know some products are really dangerous for our health, and other products are good for us as they are healthy. It turns out it’s not so simple and some of the most promoted and popular foods can, in fact, harm you. Never eat these 10 dangerous foods for the sake of your own health and the health of your family. Even if you see the juice labels “not from concentrate” or “100% pure”, don't let this fool you. Juice, after being squeezed from different fruits, is kept in huge vacuum-sealed tanks where it can sit for up to a year before being packaged! And by that time, the juice has lost all its flavor, which is why manufacturers have to add artificial flavoring to make it taste fruity again. In most cases, cereals are loaded with refined carbohydrates and sugar. Even if the label assures you that it's fat-free and whole grain, check the list of ingredients. You'll most likely see that the product is full of sugar. Despite common belief, most yogurts don't contain probiotic bacteria since the process of pasteurization kills all these microorganisms. When consumed, trans-fats in ice-cream can cause high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, and even cancer. Ice cream is also loaded with sugar, artificial flavors, and synthetic preservatives. And if it’s pink, purple, or red, it’s most likely been colored with cochineal extract or carmine, additives which can cause bad allergic reactions. Popcorn has some genetically modified ingredients as well as taste-boosting chemicals and additives. This leads to health problems such as heart attacks, digestive issues, allergies, skin rashes, breathing problems, and the depressing list goes on. Even more, popcorn is extremely caloric. These oils, when heated, become nothing more than trans-fats. -One egg contains as much cholesterol as a big greasy burger. -Microwave popcorn’s almost always lined with the same toxic substance you can find in Teflon pans. -If candy doesn’t contain sugar, it contains artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, and saccharine. These substances are chemically processed and may cause some serious side effects. -Artificial sweeteners in diet soda can easily lead to weight gain as they trigger the production of insulin, which makes your body store fat. Is Your Town on the List? Spring's beautiful blossoms bring on sneezes and sniffles. Where you live has a big impact on how you feel. Every year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) ranks the 100 largest U.S. metro areas by pollen count, allergy medicine use, and allergy doctors. Is your city one of the 10 worst "spring allergy capitals" for 2015? Richmond, VA You might be breathing a little easier than last year if you live in Virginia’s capital. Richmond's ranking has improved two places since then. Still, the city’s high year-round pollen levels can make it tough to step away from the tissue box. Living here can also be a challenge if you or your kids have asthma. It's been ranked several times as the worst U.S. city for people with asthma. Providence, RI You might be surprised to find this New England city on the list. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology doesn't even have a pollen counter stationed here. But climate change experts say the city’s daily average temps are on the rise. This helps plants thrive and make more pollen. Its current ranking is also due to a lower-than-average number of allergy doctors. Dayton, OH The birthplace of aviation it was home to the Wright Brothers -- has shuffled in and out of the top 10 for years. Tree pollens spike here around April. Common allergy culprits are cypress, juniper, cedar, and beech trees. If you're allergic to tree pollen, you'll keep you sneezing through May in this city. A rise in the use of allergy medicines helped secure its ranking this year. Wichita, KS The largest city in Kansas jumped 5 places to earn a top 10 ranking. Weeds and grasses are to blame for your itchy, watery eyes and sneezing if you live here. This year's spot is based on higher-than-average pollen counts and increased use of allergy meds for the city's estimated 382,000 people. The Midwest town's lower-than-average number of allergy doctors also played a role. McAllen, TX Wind-swept pollen from mountain cedar trees hundreds of miles away kicks off sneeze season early in this city in the Rio Grande Valley. Later on, native plants like mesquite, huisache, and grasses join in. And there's not much rain to wash away the sniffle-causing particles. McAllen only gets about 26 inches a year. Knoxville, TN Knoxville vaulted into the top 5 worst allergy cities this year after taking 16th place in 2014. That might be a surprise, since the area has a good number of allergy doctors. But the surrounding mountains help trap pollen in this valley city. And springs arrives early in the South. So pollen-making trees bloom sooner. Oak, birch, and maple box elder are common allergy culprits here. Memphis, TN Allergies have many people in this town singin’ the blues. Trees that give off spring pollen thrive in the area's warm days and cool nights. Though it’s slipped a bit from last year’s second-place finish, Memphis often ranks as one of the worst places to live for people with asthma. Closing your windows and using the A/C can help help you breathe easier. Oklahoma City, OK The Sooner State boosts plentiful sunshine -- and lots of trees that put out pollen. Blame your sneezes here on oak, mulberry, poplar, aspen, and sycamore trees, among others. Warm, dry, windy days make pollen counts surge. The tiny grains can drift for miles in the breeze. If you've been outdoors when the count is high, shed your clothes and shower when you get home. Louisville, KY That beautiful carpet of Kentucky bluegrass is a potent allergy trigger. It makes more pollen than any other grass in the U.S. Most of it is released in the early morning. If you have grass allergies, your symptoms will spike here in late spring and early summer. Louisville was ranked the worst place for spring allergies in the U.S. last year. Jackson, MS Jackson leads the nation as the worst place for spring allergies. It's back in first again after a stint at 5th last year. Forests rich in oak, ash, elm, and hickory trees cover more than half of this state. That greenery leaves behind thick coats of springtime pollen that keep you stocking up on tissues. The City With Soul's jump back to top place is due, in part, to higher use of allergy meds.

A new report shows there's no place safe from allergies this fall. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of American has ranked the 100 worst cities for allergies around the country and Bakersfield is not as high as you may think. "Often, we are noted to be in the worst condition, but it is kind of interesting," said Dr. Claudia Jonah of the Kern County Public Health Department. The 2013 Fall Allergy Capitals report ranks Bakersfield No. 78 based on the city's pollen levels, use of over-the-counter and pres

Dayton -- Dayton ranks number seven in the list of worst U.S. cities for people with allergies. The list composed by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America is based on pollen scores, the number of over-the-counter, prescription allergy medications per patient and the number of board-certified allergists per patient. Dr. William Parker, allergist in Huber Heights say outdoor allergies occur when tree pollens and other outdoor allergens are inhaled into the nose and lungs. He advises people who are allergic to avoid being outdoors for long periods of time during the middle of the day. He says try to do you outdoor activities in the early morning. Fall allergies are never fun, but depending upon where you live you could be suffering more than those in other parts of the country. Fall allergies are never fun, but depending upon where you live you could be suffering more than those in other parts of the country. In assembling their worst 100 list of the "2013 Fall Allergy Capitals", The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America took three primary factors into consideration. They were pollen count, medication sales including both prescription and over the counter allergy remedies, and the number of doctors specializing in allergies working in the area. Scores revealed that places all over the country proved to have a combination of those factors significant enough to rank, but only one city got a perfect score -- Wichita, Kansas. According to the official report, it was high pollen and dependence on medications that really made the city stand out. Jackson, Mississippi came in 2nd, and Knoxville, Tennessee was given the number 3 spot. Residents of last year's top ranked Louisville, Kentucky will no doubt be overjoyed to learn that this year they've dropped to 4th place. Memphis rounded out the top 5. Regardless of their city's rank, experts remind the 40 million Americans afflicted with allergies that suffering is often optional. Seeing a specialist is highly recommended.

It’s officially May, and, as the saying goes, the April showers helped bring May flowers. And with those flowers came allergy season. Pretty much everywhere across the United States, flowers are blooming and trees are sprouting new leaves, and both are bringing an abundance of pollen. But people in some cities are more likely to experience allergy symptoms, like runny noses, congestion and itchy watery eyes, than in others.Five cities across the country were named the “most challenging places to live with spring allergies” by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). The cities that top the list and take the No. 5 spot are both in Texas. McAllen was ranked the most challenging to live in, with San Antonio in fifth place. In second place was Louisville, Kentucky, followed by Jackson, Mississippi, in third place and Memphis, Tennessee, in fourth. The ranking is based on the pollen and mold counts, the amount of allergy medication used there and the availability of the board-certified allergists in the area, the AAFA said. McAllen residents and visitors there encountered the city’s above-average pollen and mold as well as fewer available allergists.Recommended Slideshows5150 Best-Selling Albums in U.S. History51In Pictures: The 50 Most Powerful Military Forces in the World51In Pictures: Top 50 U.S. Cities Ranked by Quality of Life And Average SalaryFor those whose city didn’t make the list, the AAFA also provided regional rankings of cities. Providence, Rhode Island, was named the most challenging city for allergy sufferers in the Northeast, and Las Vegas the most challenging for those in the West. It’s likely that allergy seasons will get only worse in the future, according to the National Climate Assessment. A full report of the pollen and mold scores, along with other factors the AAFA considered, is available with a list of 100 cities across the country, including New York, at No. 25; Los Angeles, 66; and Miami, 29. All three of those cities are worse off this year than they were in 2016, the report shows.

According to WebMD and a 2013 review by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, here are the 5 worst cities to live in for spring allergies. If you're one of the 40 million Americans who suffer from indoor or outdoor allergies, you probably know spring is here when the itchy, watery eyes and sneezing begin. According to WebMD and a 2013 review by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, here are the 5 worst cities to live in for spring allergies: Number 5 -- Louisville, Kentucky. Right on the Ohio River, Louisville is thick with bluegrass. Besides checking pollen counts for grass, also check other allergens like trees and weeds before going outdoors. Number 4 -- McAllen, Texas. Located on the state's southern tip, McAllen sees high temps and humidity already in the spring. Those conditions help spread pollen further. Number 3 -- Chattanooga, Tennessee. Allergens have gotten worse in this city famous for its steam-powered train. Prevent them from getting inside your home by turning on your air conditioning's recirculate setting and leaving windows and doors closed. Number 2 -- Knoxville, Tennessee. After spending a few years as number 1, this mountainous and charming city has dropped down one spot. Whenever contact with allergens can't be prevented, various treatments can help to manage symptoms. Number 1 -- Jackson, Mississippi. Full of prairies, croplands, and forests, Jackson has moved up three spots to number 1.

Episode #136: Leo Galland, MD – The Allergy Solution: learn the top ways to uncover hidden allergies and how to rebalance your immune system. ➢ Dr. Galland's New book http://amzn.to/1VUDNSs ➢ Listen to the Audio in iTunes: http://highintensityhealth.com/itunes The big take-home from this interview and new book, The Allergy Solution, is that our environment has changed. We talked about new research that shows how environmental toxins may actually be causing plants to produce more allergens. Even more, environmental compounds may be causing your immune system to be increasingly susceptible to allergens. So, it’s a vicious cycle. Dr. Galland says the solution is not to suppress allergies with natural compounds, but to remove the triggers and also the prime protective T-regulatory cells. T-regulatory cells help keep inflammation in check. Hear about the top five ways you can give your T-regulatory cells and immune system a boost. --------------------------------------Lets Connect---------------------------------- ● Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MikeMutzelMS ● Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike --------------------------------------Key Takeaways---------------------------------- 05:02 A New View of Allergies At the beginning of the century, hardly anyone had allergies. In the US, at least 30% of people suffer from allergies. US government data indicates that over half of Americans will experience an allergic reaction during their lifetime. 12:50: Pollution Makes Pollen More Allergenic Outdoor air pollution increases the allergenicity of the world in which we live. The US department of agriculture planted ragweed in the inner city of Baltimore, in the suburbs and in the countryside 40 miles away. The inner city urban ragweed plants grew twice as big as the rural plants and produced five times the amount of pollen. 20:45: Antibiotic soaps and Food Allergies When your skin touches Triclosan, the antibiotic soap, it is absorbed and travels throughout your body. Researchers measured the level of Triclosan in nasal secretions. Fifty percent of the people tested, had Triclosan in their nose. Triclosan is supposed to be antibacterial, but it changes the microbiome in the nose to increase the ability of dangerous staph bacteria to attach to human cells. If you have Triclosan in your nose, you have a greater amount of staph in your nose. It is a major cause of sinus infection and staph releases and secretes proteins called super antigens. If you are making them in your nose, they are in the mucus and you are swallowing them. Super antigens screw up your immune system. They inactivate a group of white blood cells called regulatory T-cells or T-regs. T-regs keep your immune system from over-reacting. People with allergies have defective T-reg cells. Studies done in Europe show that people who have nasal polyps, associated with chronic nasal allergies, inflammation and sinus infections, have a very high rate of food allergy. Study participants were more allergic to food than to environmental allergens. Nasal polyps are associated with staph. A study measured the amount of Triclosan in children’s urine. There was a direct relationship between the level of Triclosan in the urine and the likely hood that the children would have allergies. 26:48 The Microbiome: A lack of diversity of microbes in your gut, in your respiratory tract, and in your nasal mucosa is highly associated with allergy. The micobiome or fungal part of the microbiome is now being explored. As our microbial diversity is shrinking, the fungal organisms are taking over. The microbes living in our bodies have a profound affect upon your immune system. Two thirds of your immune system is located in your gut. The gut is the training center for your immune system. The lymphocytes in your gut circulate throughout your body and communicate information, returning to the gut. The gut is where the immune system gets most of its information. Antibacterials, antibiotics, herbicides and pesticides kill bacteria. Glyphosate (in Roundup) is in Roundup Ready GMO foods, because the plants have been designed to resist its effects. Glyphosate is an antibiotic. When chickens eat food containing glyphosate, their gut bacteria is screwed up and it encourages the growth of harmful bacteria.

http://www.TwinCitiesFunctionalMedicine.com In this video we talk about FoodTest95™ which is our food sensitivity / intolerance testing system! We've been food testing patients for 10+ years! It's important to know the difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity or food intolerance. A food allergy is dealing with the IgE portion of the immune system! This is the IMMEDIATE reaction. This is easy to determine because the response is right away. You may eat strawberries and get hives or a rash right away. Worst case scenario you eat shrimp and your throat closes shut...this is the anaphylactic response. Sometimes these people have to carry an epipen. In our case, we test for food sensitivities or intolerances using a system called FoodTest95™. It's done through a simple finger prick...it takes about 3 minutes...super simple and easy and roughly 100 foods are tested. In this case we're testing the IgG portion of the immune system which is the delayed immune response. This is the 10-12 hour...sometimes up to 72 hour delayed reaction. This time frame is simply too much to do any sort of elimination diet which is why we test! Who should be tested? - Weight challenges or weight loss resistance - Migraines - Chronic fatigue - Digestive challenges (leaky gut, IBS etc.) - Anxiety / Depression - Autoimmune conditions (lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis) - Back pain, muscle pain, joint pain, neck pain - Infertility - Skin problems (acne, psoriasis, eczema) - Fibromyalgia If you want to be tested just give our clinic a call. Remember, we see patients not only locally but nationally as well. 952-891-2225 #foodallergy #foodsensitivity

Living in a city does not make you any less susceptible to seeing a rat. We try really hard to get rid of these pesky pests, but they seem to always slink around some corner of an alley you are walking down. Here is the answer to why rats are so hard to get rid of from your city. Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/science Science Insider on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BusinessInsiderScience/ Science Insider on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/science_insider/ Business Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/businessinsider Tech Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is a transcript of the video: Wormtail. Professor Ratigan. The R.O.U.S. Pop culture has given rats a bad rep. And it’s understandable why. Take northeastern India’s rat flood. Twice a century, rats swarm when bamboo forests drop about 80 tons of seeds. After they devour the seeds, they devastate local agriculture. In the 1960s, the resulting famine was so bad, it lead to a major political uprising. It’s no wonder that the technical term for a group of rats is a “mischief”! And they’re not just a problem for farmers. These crafty rodents are the ultimate urbanites. Meet your average city rats: Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus. These rats live pretty much wherever we do. Especially in cities. Take New York City, for example. We don’t know exactly how many rats call the Big Apple home. But a 2014 study gave a ballpark estimate of 2 million rats. That means for heavily-infested areas you could have several rats per person! And in some ways, rats are better suited for living in cities than people. They can climb brick walls, “tightrope walk” over telephone cables, and their incisors grow 14 inches a year. Which lets them gnaw into anything — including everywhere you don’t want them. But their most powerful ability? Rats are clever. Too clever. Scientists have shown that rats can learn to use tools. And when offered the choice between a chocolate and freeing a trapped friend. Rats chose to free their friend over chocolate! Translate those smarts to the real world and rats easily avoid traps. Trying to poison them won’t help much either. Rats are extremely patient when it comes to new foods. They’ll taste just a tiny portion at first, wait to see if that food makes them sick and only then, consume the rest if it’s safe. This is called “delayed learning” and it’s why rats are notoriously difficult to poison. Plus, they can develop resistance to many poisons over time so even outwitting them might not work in the long run. Another major issue is that rats reproduce quickly. A single doe usually has 8-12 pups every 8 weeks! And those babies can have pups of their own after only 5 weeks! So as long as they have access to food, rat populations will rebound from just about any attack. The only attack they can’t handle is improved sanitation. And cities are using that to their advantage. In 2017, for example, New York City launched a $32 million war plan against its rats. Eliminate 70% of the rats in its 10 most-infested neighborhoods. The plan is simple. Cut off their food source. You see, NYC produces around 33 million tons of trash a year — more than any other city on Earth! The trash piles aren’t getting any smaller but the city can at least make it harder for rats to reach by replacing traditional trash compactors with a mailbox style opening. Will NYC succeed by the end of 2018, as proposed? Judging from the thousands of years where rats came out on top it sounds a tad optimistic. While wild rats are problematic pests, pet fancy rats are another story. They don’t spread disease and are social, smart, and easily trainable. And get this, one amazing study found that rats giggle when you tickle them!

How to Deal With Cat Allergies - Cat 101 - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Hello. My name is Dr. Carolyn Quagliata. I am the owner and founder of City Pet Doctor, New York City's premiere house call vet service. The way you will know if you are allergic to your cat is that you will have runny nose, itchy eyes, scratchy throat, excess sneezing, and in some cases symptoms of asthma. It is very heartbreaking when you realize that your allergic to your cat or if you want to get a cat, and you realize that you are allergic. But the good thing, is that most people's symptoms are mild to moderate, and they can be controlled enough where you can live harmoniously with your cat. The first thing, there is definitely a lot of good medications out there that you can take that will help decrease the symptoms and there are also things that you can do in the environment in your home that will help decrease your symptoms. The main thing to understand is that the allergen is actually in the cat's saliva. It is called, dander. And when a cat grooms themselves the dander actually aerosolizes and you breathe it or it touches your skin and that is what causes the allergic reaction. So if you use a hepa filter on a regular basis. If you wipe down your cat with safe wipes to help decrease the amount of dander. That helps. And then the last thing is to keep the cats out of the bedroom so that the allergic person has a safe haven. So if you follow these steps a lot of times you can control your symptoms enough to be able to live harmoniously with your cat.
