The problem is, in nature water does come in an alkaline state because of the minerals. When you artificially make water alkaline, you split apart the water molecules with electricity to make it alkaline but without the minerals. Its the minerals that add the "x" factor in water, not just H2O. There are problems long term that can occur with drinking artificially make alkaline water - the neutralization of body acids (stomach, large intestines and urine). I have found that some people who drink alkaline water end up with a urine of a pH of 9, completely off the scale when it should be 5-6. This breads microbes. Making your entire body alkaline can create problems with electrolytes (affecting the heart), the muscles, and slow digestion, because you need a strong acid stomach. Removing Contaminants The most important health benefit distilled water offers is the elimination of water borne contaminants that may potentially be found in water. Drinking contaminated water is one of the fastest ways to spread disease, toxic metals and industrial pollutants. But there is another "essential" ingredient for health we do not want to overlook: water. Did you know that the human body is about 60 percent water? So taking in all those other essential nutrients will not sustain us without water's help. That's because every cell in the body depends on water. It carries nutrients to our cells and helps us flush out toxins from our organs. Drinking water restores fluids lost through metabolism, breathing, sweating, and the removal of waste. It is important to drink before you feel thirsty. This is because thirst is often the first symptom of dehydration. So if you are feeling thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated. If it is hot outside or you have been exercising, you will want to increase your water intake. And what about the opposite, or drinking too much? You may have seen stories in the news about marathon runners and over-hydration. However, this is pretty uncommon and drinking too little water is more of a worry. The key to hydration is to focus on moderation. Here is a question my patients ask all the time: "How much water should I drink each day?" Eight glasses a day is not the magic number and there is no scientific evidence behind it. Recommendations vary anywhere from eight to fifteen 8-ounce glasses of water a day. How much water you need depends on a number of factors like how big you are, your activity level and how hot it is. If you are at all concerned, talk to a doctor or nutritionist about your particular needs. Most people get about 80 percent of their water from liquid and 20 percent from the food they eat. Foods that have high water content include lettuce, watermelon, broccoli and grapefruit. They are all over 90 percent water. Carrots, apples and yogurt also contain a lot of water. And of course liquids such as milk, fruit juice, and even herbal teas will help keep you hydrated. Plain water is simply the best calorie-free beverage. If you want to add some flavor, just add a squeeze of lime or lemon, or a splash of 100 percent fruit juice. Sparkling water is also an option for a bit of zing. To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. From the sounds of it, Vitamin Water seems like it should be the real winner, but first, lets look at the nutrition information and ingredients list. Get ready to be surprised. Is Vitamin Water healthy? One way to find this out is to look at the ingredients and nutrition label. Vitamin Water nutrition information (per serving): Calories: 120 Protein: 0g Carbohydrates: 31g Fat: 0g In this example, the Vitamin Water contains 120 calories and 31 grams of sugar, in just one serving! I don't know about you, but one of the main reasons I drink water is to cleanse my body. Pumping 34 grams of sugar, which is the same amount as soda, does not help with this. Vitamin Water sounds very interesting doesn’t it? And vitamin water zero sounds even more interesting. I knew from the name it was a product of Coca Cola Bottling, they kind of have a monopoly on all the “zero” names. So I went to their website to see what I could find out about this product. The first words, for some reason, that caught my eye was “reverse osmosis water.” Now, I studied chemistry and I know what osmosis is, it is basically where molecules will pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated one hoping to achieve equilibrium. So what is reverse osmosis? Is Coca Cola trying to reach a state of imbalance? But there is no explanation on their website, not even in the frequently asked questions segment, and that has to be a frequently asked question, doesn’t it? So, I searched and found out that “Reverse Osmosis is a process in which dissolved inorganic solids (such as salts) are removed from a solution (such as water) by forcing water through a semipermeable membrane. So basically I took all that time to tell you that Vitamin water is filtered. But filtered water doesn’t sound as cool does it? Vitamin water Zero comes in 8 flavors, contains no calories or carbs. The “vitamin” part comes in the form of A, B6, C and E and a few minerals. Coca Cola does point out on their website that this product is made with GMO’s so if you are not into those, this product might not be for you. Is Vitamin water Zero good for diabetes? It is not bad for diabetes. It seems like a healthy alternative to sugary drinks. But I think $40 for a pack of 24 bottles is a bit steep.
