The Cytosponge is a tiny sponge on a string which expands in the human stomach. When it is pulled out, the expanded sponge collects cells along your food pipe. This can be a detector for oesophageal cancer. The 5-year survival rate for this cancer is just 18%, mostly due to late diagnosis. The sponge is now being trialled at around 150 GP practices in the UK. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI UK on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1Nz3jG3 Follow BI UK On Facebook: http://bit.ly/1VWDkiy Read more: http://uk.businessinsider.com/?IR=C -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider UK is the largest business news site for British readers and viewers in the UK. DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS(122618)-NIMITZ MS CHOSEN TO SEND EXPERIMENT TO SPACE

06:03
ODESSA, TEXAS/DECEMBER 26, 2018-6TH GRADE SCIENCE STUDENTS AT NIMITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO SEND THEIR EXPERIMENT TO SPACE. THE STUDENTS BEGAN WORKING ON THEIR SCIENTIFIC PROPOSAL IN SEPTMEBER. THE STUDENTS CAME UP WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT IDEAS BEFORE CHOOSING TO DO RESEARCH ON THE HIGH RISK OF COLON CANCER AMONG ASTRONAUTS IN SPACE. (SYDNEY RICHARDSON, 6TH GRADE SCIENCE STUDENT-NIMITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL-ODESSA, TEXAS) "WHENEVER ASTRONAUTS COME BACK, THAT IS THE, THAT IS THE TYPE OF CANCER THAT THEY ARE MOST AT RISK OF, IS COLON CANCER. AND SO, WE WANTED TO FIND A WAY TO CURE CANCER WHILE THEY'RE IN SPACE. THE STUDENTS' SCIENTIFIC PROPOSAL WAS SUBMITTED TO THE DISTRICT JUDGES, WHO BEGAN THE TASK OF LOOKING AT ALL PROPOSALS FROM PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS WITHIN THE ECTOR COUNTY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BEGINING EARLY NOVEMBER.. (SIDNEY RICHARDSON, 6TH GRADE SCIENCE STUDENT-NIMITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL-ODESSA, TEXAS) "THE RESULTS CAME BACK, AND WE HAD WON FIRST OUT OF THREE PLACES. SO, THE OTHER TWO WERE TWO HIGH SCHOOL GROUPS." "WE WERE PRETTY EXCITED, WHENEVER WE FOUND OUT WE HAD BEATEN SO MANY PEOPLE FOR THE FIRST SPOT." THIS EXPERIMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR LONG SPACE TRAVEL BUT ALSO FOR CANCER TREATMENTS ON EARTH. (NATALIA SCHLABRITZ-LUTSEVICH, M.D., PH.D.-REGIONAL ASSOCIATE DEAN OF RESEARCH - TEXAS TECH UNIVERISTY HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER) "THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT PROJECT, NOT ONLY FOR THE FUTURE TRAVEL TO SPACE LIKE MARS AND OTHER PLANETS." "IT IS VERY IMPORTANT HERE ON EARTH FOR TREATMENT OF CANCER ON EARTH, BECAUSE IF WE ARE SURE THAT MICRO-GRAVITY IS INCREASING EFFICACY OF THE BACTERIA TREATMENT, FOR EXAMPLE, OR INCREASING THE PROBABLITY OF HOSTING TO FIND CANCEROUS CELLS. MAYBE MICRO-GRAVITY COULD BE ADDED TO THE CANCER TREATMENT HERE FOR MORE EFFICIENTLY TREAT PATIENTS OR THE MECHANISM COULD BE FOUND, WHICH IS ASSOCIATED WITH MICRO-GRAVITY AND THAT COULD BE DEVELOPED TO TARGET THIS PARTICULAR PATHWAYS." THE GOAL OF THE STUDENTS' PROPOSAL IS TO HELP ASTRONAUTS TRAVELING THROUGH DEEP SPACE WITH A NONTOXIC TREATMENT FOR COLON CANCER WITH THE USE OF NONPATHOGENIC NON-TOXIC BACTERIAL SPORES (KUSHAL GANDHI, POST DOCTRATE RESEARCHER, TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER) "BEFORE FOUR MONTHS WE JUST CAME HERE, AND THEY AH, THE STUDENTS WERE THINKING TO TREAT THE COLON CANCER BECAUSE OF THE RADIATION ACTUALLY IT DAMAGE THE COLON IN SPACE. THEY WERE THINKING TO TREAT THE CANCER ANOTHER WAY. THE PROBLEM WITH RADIATON IN CHEMO-THERAPY HAS A LOT OF SIDE-AFFECTS AND IT'S ALSO TOXIC, SO THEY WERE THINKING TO TREAT WITH A NONPATHOGENIC A NON TOXIC BACTERIAL SPORES AND WE WERE JUST GIVING GUIDANCE TO THEM." DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY OF THIS PROJECT COMMUNICATION AND GUIDANCE WAS VERY IMPORTANT BETWEEN THE 6TH GRADE SCIENCE STUDEN TS AND THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENTISTS. (ANEESH BAPODRA, MEDICAL STUDENT-TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER) "SO I GOT TO BE IN KIND'VE IN A UNIQUE POSITION, BECAUSE THE KIDS AND DOCTOR NATALIA AND OTHER SCIENTIST, WHO ARE WORKING ON THIS PROJECT HAD THESE VERY COMPLEX IDEAS AND VERY IMAGINATIVE IDEAS THAT I GOT TO HELP BRIDGE, HELP EXPLAIN AND COMMUNICATE BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM, SO I HELPED CREATE DIAGRAMS AND OTHER VISUALS FOR THE KIDS" NIMITZ WAS ONE OF THREE ECISD FINALISTS IN THE STUDENT SPACEFLIGHT EXPERIMENTS PROGRAM. AND WILL BE PRESENTING THEIR PROPOSAL AT THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.. (CORTNEY SMITH, FACILITATOR-SSEP PROGRAM-ECISD) "WE'LL BE TRAVELING WITH THE STUDENTS TO WASHINGTON, D.C. IN LATE JUNE OR EARLY JULY SO THEY CAN PRESENT TO THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE." (PRICILLA TORRES, FACILITATOR-SSEP PROGRAM-ECISD) "THEY SAY THE EARLY PART OF THE SUMMER IS THE CURRENT LAUNCH DATE. OF COURSE, WE KNOW THAT CHANGES VERY OFTEN, BUT WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE. ONCE WE GET CLOSER TO THE DATE, WE HAVE TO BE IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH STACY HAMMEL AND EVERYONE ELSE TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS GETTING SENT AND THE APPROPRIATE TEMPERATURES TO MAKE SURE THE VIABILITY OF EVERYTHING " TWO STUDENTS OF THE 6TH GRADE SCIENCE CLASS AT NIMITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPRESSED THEIR FEELINGS TOWARDS THIS ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY. (MAISON LEET, 6TH GRADE SCIENCE STUDENT-NIMITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL) "IT MEANS A WHOLE LOT TO ME.IT MEANS THAT IN THE FUTURE, IF THIS PROJECT GOES RIGHT. IF I END UP SOMEHOW LIVING ON THE--IN NEATHER REGIONS OF MARS; I'LL AT LEAST KNOW THAT I CAN BE CURED OF MY COLON CANCER." (AIDAN GOMEZ, 6TH GRADE SCIENCE STUDENT-NIMITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL) "IT'S IMPORTANT TO ME, BECAUSE SCIENCE IS MY FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL, AND MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT SCIENCE IS SPACE. SO, WHEN I HEARD THE ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT SPACEFLIGHTS EXPERIMENTS IN SPACE. SO, THIS SHOULD REALLY BE GOOD FOR ME, 'CAUSE I LOVE SPACE AND SCIENCE." TECH TALK: HSC El Paso 03/06/17

03:06
THIS IS TECH TALK: HSC EL PASO! HELLO, I’M VERONIQUE MASTERSON AND I HAVE YOUR NEWS AND EVENTS FOR THIS WEEK. ### TTUHSC EL PASO HAS BEEN AWARDED A $1.1 MILLION GRANT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE TO STUDY HOW EARLY PREGNANCY REDUCES A WOMAN’S RISK FOR BREAST CANCER. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT IF A WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO HER FIRST CHILD BEFORE THE AGE OF 20, HER RISK OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER IS HALF OF THAT OF A WOMAN WHO HAS NEVER UNDERGONE A FULL-TERM PREGNANCY, OR A WOMAN WHO HAD HER FIRST CHILD AFTER THE AGE OF 35. THE BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES THAT CAUSE THIS PROTECTIVE EFFECT, HOWEVER, ARE NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD. DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST RAJKUMAR LAKSHMANASWAMY, Ph.D., AND THE TTUHSC EL PASO TEAM WILL SPECIFICALLY STUDY GROWTH HORMONE AND PROLACTIN, TWO HORMONES KNOWN FOR STIMULATING BREAST CANCER GROWTH, BUT THAT DRAMATICALLY DIP IN WOMEN AFTER PREGNANCY. LAKSHMANASWAMY BELIEVES THIS HORMONAL REDUCTION IN POSTPARTUM WOMEN AFFECTS TISSUE WITHIN THE BREAST, CAUSING IT TO PERMANENTLY ALTER AND BECOME RESISTANT TO MAMMARY CANCER. THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST EMPHASIZES THAT HE DOES NOT RECOMMEND FOR WOMEN TO GET PREGNANT EARLY TO AVOID BREAST CANCER; HE ONLY HOPES TO GAIN MORE KNOWLEDGE ON THE PROTECTIVE PHENOMENON SO THAT IT CAN BE TRANSLATED INTO A NEW THERAPY FOR BREAST CANCER. [Rajkumar Lakshmanaswamy, Ph.D. - GSBS Dean ### TTUHSC EL PASO AND THE TEXAS TECH PHYSICIANS OF EL PASO BREAST CARE CENTER CELEBRATED BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS IN THE EL PASO COMMUNITY DURING ‘BUBBLES & BRUNCH,’ A TTUHSC EL PASO SIGNATURE EVENT. THE MORNING WAS FILLED WITH SURVIVOR STORIES, AN AUCTION AND TRIVIA. An Inside Look at Anne Arundel Medical Center's DeCesaris Cancer Institute

02:18
Learn more at http://www.AAHS.org/cancer. The Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute is the central planning and clearing house for all cancer related activities. Barry Meisenberg, M.D., speaks about the offered programs in thoracic oncology, breast oncology, surgical oncology, prostate cancer, and more. Stephen Cattaneo, M.D. also guides us through the center's multidisciplinary approach to treating patients. The center is involved not only with treating patients after they receive a cancer diagnosis, but also with educating the public about what they can do to prevent cancer, cancer screenings and cancer prevention programs, like the Smoking Cessation Program. Once someone starts cancer treatment at the DeCesaris Cancer Institute, a multidisciplinary team of doctors reviews each case and works together to come up with the best course of action for the patient. They consider the patient's history, their slides, exam results and family history to analyze the situation and decide on a proper course of action. What's next for the institute? Providing even more treatment options for patients, following up with survivors to gain a deeper understanding of what treatment options are the most effective, and learning what makes treatment easier and less stressful for patients.

Donated T-cells are given an extra gene to make them target specific leukaemia cells and other genes are disabled to prevent them from attacking their host. We also explore a promising cancer drug called Pembrolizumab. This drug makes the tumour visible to the T-cells. This new wave of cancer-fighting drugs, called immunotherapy, are the brainchild of Dr James Allison and his partner and wife, Dr Padmanee Sharma, who both work at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. "Jim Allison's breakthrough changed the whole field. What he recognised is the immune system doesn't just have 'on' switches, it has 'off' switches. It's the yin and the yang of the immune system. If you keep trying to turn it on, it has its own internal controls to keep it turned off," explains Dr Sharma. "He recognised that if you want the T-cells to really attack cancer, you have to turn off the 'off' signal. So you have to block the brakes." The human immune system is built around white blood cells, which scientists call T-cells. When a T-cell senses an infection, it will attack. But with many cancers, T-cells will not attack because tumour cells are blocking their attacking mechanism. Dr Allison's and Dr Sharma's immune checkpoint therapy overrides those blocking systems, allowing the T-cells to do their job. David Wight, who has received treatment for bladder cancer at MD Anderson, is living proof that immunotherapy works. David is in remission, and his life has been extended beyond what anyone imagined. But according to Dr Sharma, immunotherapy is not for everyone. "Around 20 percent or so do very well … It gives us hope that we can build on this 20 percent to make it 50 percent, 80 percent, maybe 100 percent," she explains. Besides checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy, adoptive cell transfer, known as ACT therapy, is also in the fight against cancer. With ACT, scientists in the Paris-based lab, Cellectis, are genetically manipulating T-cells and turning them into optimum cancer-killing machines. In 2015, Dr Andre Choulika's immunotherapy treatment was tested on its first human subject, Layla Richards, a one-year-old leukaemia patient. After receiving a single dose of genetically engineered T-cells, Layla went into complete remission within a few weeks. As of October 2016, Layla Richards remains in remission. A second young patient was also given the T-cell treatment and, while she has not been identified, she is reportedly also in remission. 10-year old cancer fighter meets his Red Raider hero

02:06
10-year-old Myles Galvan of Shallowater was speechless Monday as met his hero, Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege. Galvan has just finished his final rounds of chemotherapy to treat his leukemia. "I'm honored and I feel blessed that I'm in a position to make dreams come true," Doege said. Galvan was diagnosed in 2009 and has battled the cancer for three years. He is now in remission, and what better way to celebrate than to meet his hero? Galvan has been a Red Raider fan since birth and looks up to Doege. When his doctors at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center found out, they arranged the meeting. "I was jacked up, I couldn't wait. I'm glad to meet him," Doege said. After the football news conference, Doege signed a jersey and football for Galvan and tossed around the pigskin with him. He admits he was nervous about meeting Doege, but he instantly made him feel at ease. Mercedes Day is a Nurse Practitioner at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, she's thankful for Doege's gesture. "It made Myles feel really comfortable, I could tell, when he was around Seth," Day said. Doege said Galvan was one of the most courageous kids he had ever met. He says it's still surreal for him that kids like Myles look up to him. "I was that kid at a certain age that looked up to the Texas Tech quarterback, just like he did. Myles reminds me of myself when I was star struck by these guys," Doege said. Galvan, who hopes to play college football one day, soaked up all the advice he could from Doege. "I didn't have to give him much advice because he's been through it all. He's been through a lot more than I have," Doege said. As star struck as Galvan was with his role model, Doege says the ten year old's accomplishments are far greater than anything he's done on the field. "I told him I looked up to him. Strong kid. One of the strongest I've met," Doege said. "He's ten and there's a lot of kids that will never go through what he went through. His treatment has been going on for a long time and he's a fighter," Day said. Surely a day to remember for this boy who defeated the one thing that should have defeated him.

Circulating Tumor Cells Clinical Utility, Challenges and Future Prospects

01:03:52
Presented at: Cancer Research & Oncology 2017 - https://www.labroots.com/virtual-event/cancer-research-oncology-2017 Presented by: Qing Meng, PhD - Director, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Webinar: Circulating Tumor Cells: Clinical Utility, Challenges, and Future Prospects Abstract: The detection of CTCs has been used as useful biomarkers in prognosis and monitoring therapeutic response of patients with metastatic cancer. However, during the course of cancer therapy, CTCs have undergone epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) (i.e., EMT CTCs) and the current FDA-approved technology is unable to detect such EMT CTCs. Using new technologies such as antibody against cell-surface vimentin (CSV) exclusively expressed on EMT CTCs, we are able to detect EMT CTCs from breast, colon, and prostate tumor types and monitor disease progression and predict the prognosis. This presentation will briefly review the current status of CTC detection, the detection technology and clinical utility of CTC. The challenges of the current technology and new technology in determination of CTC will be addressed. The detection of EMT CTCs especially CTC with molecular profiling for cancer diagnosis, monitoring therapeutic responses, predicting prognosis, and guiding personalized therapy will be discussed. Detection of CTCs and molecular characterization as one of the liquid biopsy approach may serve as an instrumental role for noninvasive approach in personalized cancer medicine. 2014 Texas 4000: Ozarks Route Team Video

04:12
Every year Texas 4000 competitively selects University of Texas students for an 18-month program designed to cultivate the next generation to lead the fight against cancer. Texas 4000 empowers each student to raise $4,500, ride 1,500 training miles with his/her team, volunteer more than 50 hours in the community, and play an active role in planning every aspect of the ride to Alaska by attending weekly meetings and taking leadership positions within the team. We look for students with a passion to fight cancer, previous organizational involvement, good communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work well with a team. Believe it or not, previous cycling experience is NOT a requirement and the fundraising, training and volunteering all take place BEFORE the summer ride even begins. The Texas 4000 training program includes a comprehensive curriculum that includes grassroots fundraising, volunteerism, media training, team building, the basic operations of a nonprofit, and many more relevant topics. Riders’ physical training includes group workouts, skills and mechanical clinics, organized training camps, and weekly rides. As a result of their full experience, Texas 4000 riders report growth and increased skills in the areas of physical fitness, leadership, accountability, confidence, resiliency, decision-making, conflict resolution, cancer advocacy, community engagement, volunteerism, fundraising, networking, mentorship, nonprofit operations, bike maintenance, nutrition, public speaking, interviewing, time management, teamwork, and more. SUMMER RIDE t4k ourprogram img2 Our Program As a 70-day ride that travels three routes from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska, the Texas 4000 summer ride is the longest annual charity bike ride in the world. Starting together in Austin on Day Zero, the team splits on Day Two into Sierra, Rockies, and Ozarks routes and later reunites in Canada to ride the last nine days together into Anchorage. Each rider logs more than 4,000 riding miles throughout the course of the ride. The riders arrange all accommodations in advance during the training year. They rely on the generosity of host families, churches, and schools for shelter and are prepared to camp when housing is not available. Riders provide their own “SAG” support, rotating through the duties of driving the support vehicles, setting up rest stops, securing food donations, and preparing meals that are not provided. Messages of prevention and early detection are shared through educational programs given by riders in many of the towns they ride through. They view it as an honor to have the opportunity to share life-saving information with communities large and small. These programs often begin powerful conversations and allow individuals to share how cancer has affected their lives. Community members have the opportunity to sign the team’s dedication banner, which the riders will carry on their journey to Alaska in memory or honor of that individual’s fight. Wherever they are along the journey, the riders begin their day by gathering in a circle to reflect on their shared mission to fight cancer. Often joined by their hosts, everyone shares ride dedications for the day – usually made in honor or in memory of a loved one or someone they have met along the road who is fighting cancer. GRANTMAKING t4k ourprogram img3 Our Program Each year, Texas 4000 awards grants to organizations with a focus on cancer research or cancer support services. Established requirements for grantees include involvement and investment in the Texas 4000 program as well as the ability of the grant to make a significant relative impact. The grant review committee consists of the most recent alumni riders, previous alumni, Board members, staff, and community members. A few examples of previous Texas 4000 grants: MD Anderson Cancer Center (Distinguished Professorship Endowment, Center for Molecular Markers, Center for Targeted Therapy, and Children’s Cancer Hospital) LIVESTRONG Foundation (Navigation Support Services and Community Impact Project) University of Texas at Austin Department of Biomedical Engineering (multiple research seed grants, Established Texas 4000 Endowment) Brent’s Place (“Safe-Clean” living accommodations for immune-compromised children undergoing cancer treatment) We rely on charitable giving to support all aspects of Texas 4000 and are happy to provide detailed financial information upon request.
