Anne Wojcicki: "Co-Founder and CEO of 23andMe" | Talks at Google
Anne Wojcicki is the Co-Founder and CEO for 23andMe. Her company helps users learn about their ancestry, genealogy, and inherited traits via at-home genetics test kits and genetic mapping research. In 2007, 23andMe became the first company to offer autosomal DNA testing for ancestry, becoming a pioneer in the field, and developing technology that has lead the way for every other at-home genetic testing service to come after it. The saliva-based, direct-to-consumer genetic testing business was named “Invention of the Year” by Time magazine in 2008. Anne discusses the impact her family had on her vision to build 23andMe; challenges she faced building the company; why we should all take ownership of our health; how 23andMe can help researchers find medical cures, and more! Controversy over Genetic Engineering in Agriculture: The good, the bad, and the righteous
Today's farmers feed more than 7 billion people, and we can trace much of this bounty and efficiency to traditional agricultural technologies, especially plant breeding, fertilizers, and chemical management of soil and weeds — major ingredients of the first Green Revolution. However, population growth and increased demands for higher quality food will require large improvements in agricultural productivity going forward, while we minmize the undesired environmental and social effects of more intense farming systems. Direct modification of DNA, or genetic engineering, is a new tool for plant breeding that has spread at unprecedented speed over the last two decades. However, it has also come up against strong social and legal resistance in many countries, making its future significance as a tool to promote productivity and sustainability uncertain. At the Oct. 14 Corvallis Science Pub, Steve Strauss, director of Oregon State University's Outreach in Biotechnology program, will discuss the pros and cons of gene technology for agriculture. He will review what the technology actually is, how it is similar and different from conventional breeding, and how it has impacted agriculture to date. He will also discuss diverse sources of the controversy surrounding it, including the numerous myths and confusing science that pervade the online world. "Gene technology is a valuable tool, not a silver bullet," Strauss says. "It can do a lot, but it must be used with due caution and as part of integrated, ecologically guided management systems for sustained benefit." He also argues that it appears capable of providing major humanitarian benefits to the poor by improving nutrition and food security. "Despite the fears and growing legal barriers, the stakes in this debate are too high to turn away from. We must find socially acceptable ways to move forward." Strauss is a distinguished professor in the Oregon State College of Forestry and a Fellow of the Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University. He is also the director of the Tree Biosafety and Genomics Research Cooperative at OSU that conducts research on mitigation of risks from genetic engineering in forestry.

Webinar - Disaster Planning: What You Need to Protect Your Tech - 2009-08-20
Does your organization have a plan to keep your technology, data, and assets protected in the event of an emergency or disaster? What if it's not an actual disaster like a hurricane or flood, but a staff member simply loses or breaks a laptop carrying essential supporter data? How much time or money might your organization spend trying to recover even a fraction of what's been lost? If these questions have crossed your mind and your answers are less than ideal, you should join us for our two-part webinar series on disaster planning to protect your technology. TechSoup's Becky Wiegand interviews nonprofit tech expert Chris Shipley from Nutmeg Consulting and Elliot Harmon, TechSoup staff writer and editor of our newly released The Resilient Organization: A Guide for Disaster Planning and Recovery. We also speak with Michelle Baldwin, Executive Director of Volunteers in Service to Others, which runs the Cooke County emergency food bank. They experienced a flood two years ago and she'll be offering advice for other nonprofits trying to plan ahead. We discuss the ins and outs of getting your organization in tip-top shape before a disaster or crisis happens. We review best practices, tips, and resources for developing and implementing a disaster preparedness plan for technology at your organization that will help you not only when a crisis hits — but everyday with a more streamlined, efficient workplace.

Power and Distorted Relationships: The Psychology of the “Loyal Slave” and “Mammy” (Lecture)
In the final days of the America Civil War, previously isolated slave populations found the opportunity to run toward Union ships or infantry encampments. Likewise, as federal forces moved onto these plantations and publicly read the Emancipation Proclamation, newly freed slaves migrated in great numbers to the nearest city where the Freedman’s Bureau worked to reunite scattered families and provide various forms of social or economic support. Southern planters watched their slaves leave with dismay, having lived under the delusion that their “human property” saw them as patriarchs who provided daily protection from birth to death. Their “defections” stripped away any pretense of the master-slave relationship. Join Ranger Troy Harman and explore the shattered notions of the “loyal slave” and “Mammy” following the end of the war and the transformation of southern society.

Is Administrative Review of Granted Patents Constitutional? | Impact on Patent Law & Innovation
Is Administrative Review of Granted Patents Constitutional? The U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari in Oil States Energy Services v. Greene’s Energy Group, a case in which the petitioner argues that the most prominent U.S. Patent and Trademark Office process for analyzing the validity of granted patents “violates the Constitution by extinguishing private property rights through a non-Article III forum without a jury.” Duke Law's Center for Innovation Policy gathered distinguished practitioners and legal scholars from a variety of perspectives to discuss potential implications of the case for patent law, for the administrative state, and for affected industries. Panel 1: Oil States’ Impact on Patent Law and Innovation Panelists: Erika Harmon Arner, Finnegan, Henderson Paul H. Berghoff, McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff; Michael V. "The Building of Native American Jewellery Collections in the United Kingdom" This lecture is structured through four case studies (London, Cambridge, Oxford and Edinburgh) and looks at the circumstances that determined the collections of Native American jewellery in the UK from the 1890s onwards. Arguing that objects in museums have micro-histories of entanglement and that knowledge of the relations and alliances enhances our understanding of how collections are built as a whole, it charts personal trajectories, institutional histories, professional relationships and lasting friendships all expressed through the material legacy of Native American jewellery. WaterTalks series: Pathways to Water Security for Rivers under Pressure by Dustin Garrick
Dustin Evan Garrick is an Assistant Professor and Philomathia Chair of Water Policy at McMaster University.  He specializes in water allocation policy and river basin governance in water stressed regions of Western North America and Southeast Australia. This talk was presented on Oct. 29, 2015 as part of the Water Institute’s ongoing WaterTalks series. Almost four billion people will live in river basins experiencing severe water stress by 2050 according to the baseline estimate of the 2012 OECD Environmental Outlook.  Water markets and integrated river basin governance have been upheld as institutional blueprints for allocating scarce and variable freshwater for people, agriculture and ecosystems. Progress has been uneven, however, despite multiple decades of institutional reforms in rivers under pressure.  Dr. Garrick examines the evolution and performance of water allocation reforms in the Colorado, Columbia and Murray–Darling Basins, three ‘closed rivers’ at the leading edge of water scarcity challenges globally.  This talk will summarize over a decade of policy and economic research in the three basins to generate lessons about the principles and pathways to more adaptive and sustainable water allocation policy.  It will close with lessons and implications for international observers.

Webinar: New Tool for Antibody Specificity Testing
This webinar introduces a new technology OriGene develops for the validation of antibody specificity. Non-specific antibodies recognize "off-targets" in addition to their intended targets, which could generate false-positive results. This new tool, High-density Protein Microarray, has been used to test the specificity of commercial diagnostic antibodies and found some are not specific to their targets. This tool is also applied to identify the ultra-specific antibodies UltraMABs.

Career Conference: Major in Happiness Debunking the College Major Fallacies 3.24.17
The preconceptions and suspicions about how things operate in today’s challenging global marketplace often compel people to forge correlations with causations without any substantial evidence. Unfortunately, this flawed thinking is the foundation upon which many students declare their undergraduate major. With the repayment of college loans as a paramount issue for students and their families, the major is often viewed as the stepping stone for a career that can repay those loans instead of the first step to a meaningful life based on leadership, purpose, and service. Students should declare a major that makes them happy.

St. Louis’ Mid-Century Modern Architecture: The Matter of Materials by Mary Reid Brunstrom
In the immediate post-World War II years, architects and engineers in the St. Louis region produced a significant inventory of what are now characterized as Mid-century modern buildings. Formal experimentation was prompted by the availability of materials such as structural steel, in a climate in which architecture simultaneously led and responded to the era’s search for the expression of postwar confidence and optimism embodied in phenomena in such as air travel. At the same time, architecture helped mediate the anxieties inherent the atomic age. While new materials defined a leading edge of architecture, St. Louis’ signature material brick experienced a flowering in postwar architecture such as in Eric Mendelsohn’s B’nai Amoona synagogue, producing continuity in the fabric and texture of St. Louis’ built environment. Traditional decorative materials, in particular stained glass, which constitutes a major theme of the modernist narrative, were refreshed by the incorporation of more abstracted, dynamic and modern forms used mainly but not exclusively in church architecture. I have undertaken extensive research in the context of a recently completed catalogue essay for a Fall 2015 exhibition at the St. Louis Art Museum on Modern Design, 1935-65. The advent and adoption of new materials for building emerged as a prominent and pervasive theme in this research. For the JNEM symposium, I propose a presentation based on this research. My paper will provide a broad overview of St. Louis’ modernist architecture of the period, a format which could serve as an introduction to the region’s rich inventory of modernist buildings. My talk would encompass typologies in both the public and private domain including public memorials, recreation facilities, public and private housing, transportation, religious architecture, buildings for education, public libraries and hospitals. The talk would focus on buildings in which materials were essential elements in the search for structures that would serve modern goals and uses. I would illustrate my argument with leading examples such as Gyo Obata’s use of thin shell concrete in the Priory Chapel and the McDonnell Planetarium, Murphy and Mackey’s use of expansive plate glass at Washington University’s Olin Library, and the same firm’s pioneering use of Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome concept for the design of the Climatron at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Executed with triangular Plexiglass panels hung from an aluminum frame by aluminum wire, the Climatron was hailed by the national AIA as “one of the most important buildings in American architectural history.” I would of course bring in Eero Saarinen’s use of the stainless steel and concrete skin for the Gateway Arch, but unless otherwise indicated, I would not dwell on that because I imagine the material of the Arch will be more than adequately covered over the course of the symposium. I would also explain the use of prefab buildings for the phenomenon of the housing estate, ranging from modular houses constructed on site by developers to the Lustron house trucked in from the factory in Cleveland, Ohio and assembled on site. In further elaboration of the rich array of materials that characterize building in the region at midcentury, I will briefly touch on innovations such as Cemesto wall panels, a fire-resistant combination cement and asbestos product developed for mass production during World War II and used by Charles Eames, Frank Lloyd Wright and others. Where materials where sourced, how they were promoted in the architecture and design media, and how they were understood to convey a modern message are threads that I will take up in my paper. I will elucidate the role that certain St. Louis buildings played in the promotion of specific building materials and methods. For example, House and Home promoted tract housing based on modular wall systems developed in St. Louis by Burton Duenke in collaboration with the architect, Ralph Fournier. This approach illuminates a further important theme, namely the way in which materials helped advance architectural goals of the period such as the integration of a building’s interior and exterior.

Governors, Senators, Diplomats, Jurists, Vice President of the United States (1950s Interviews)
Interviewees: John Sherman Cooper, politician, jurist, and diplomat from the U.S. state of Kentucky Herbert O'Conor, a Democrat, was the 51st Governor of Maryland in the United States from 1939 to 1947. He also served in the United States Senate, representing Maryland from 1947 to 1953. Homer S. Ferguson, United States Senator from Michigan Hubert Humphrey, served under President Lyndon B. Johnson as the 38th Vice President of the United States. Humphrey twice served as a United States Senator from Minnesota, and served as Democratic Majority Whip. He was a founder of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and Americans for Democratic Action. He also served as Mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota from 1945 to 1948. Humphrey was the nominee of the Democratic Party in the 1968 presidential election but lost to the Republican nominee, Richard Nixon. Irving Ives, American politician. A member of the Republican Party, he served as a United States Senator from New York from 1947 to 1959. He was previously a member of the New York State Assembly for sixteen years, serving as Minority Leader (1935), Speaker (1936), and Majority Leader (1937--1946). A moderate Republican, he was known as a specialist in labor and civil rights legislation. John Sparkman, American politician from the U.S. state of Alabama. A Southern Democrat, Sparkman served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate from 1937 until 1979. He was the Democratic Party's nominee for Vice President as Adlai Stevenson's running mate in the 1952 U.S. presidential election. Joseph McCarthy, American politician Joseph Raymond "Joe" McCarthy (November 14, 1908 -- May 2, 1957) was an American politician who served as a Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 until his death in 1957. Beginning in 1950, McCarthy became the most visible public face of a period in which Cold War tensions fueled fears of widespread Communist subversion. He was noted for making claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the United States federal government and elsewhere. Ultimately, his tactics and inability to substantiate his claims led him to be censured by the United States Senate. The term McCarthyism, coined in 1950 in reference to McCarthy's practices, was soon applied to similar anti-communist activities. Today the term is used more generally in reference to demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations, as well as public attacks on the character and/or patriotism of political opponents. Born and raised on a Wisconsin farm, McCarthy earned a law degree at Marquette University in 1935 and was elected as a circuit judge in 1939, the youngest in state history. At age 33, McCarthy volunteered for the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II. He successfully ran for the United States Senate in 1946, defeating Robert M. La Follette, Jr. After three largely undistinguished years in the Senate, McCarthy rose suddenly to national fame in February 1950 when he asserted in a speech that he had a list of "members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring" who were employed in the State Department. McCarthy was never able to prove his sensational charge. In succeeding years, McCarthy made additional accusations of Communist infiltration into the State Department, the administration of President Harry S. Truman, Voice of America, and the United States Army. He also used charges of communism, communist sympathies, or disloyalty to attack a number of politicians and other individuals inside and outside of government. With the highly publicized Army--McCarthy hearings of 1954, McCarthy's support and popularity faded. On December 2, 1954, the Senate voted to censure Senator McCarthy by a vote of 67 to 22, making him one of the few senators ever to be disciplined in this fashion. McCarthy died in Bethesda Naval Hospital on May 2, 1957, at the age of 48. The official cause of death was acute hepatitis; it is widely accepted that this was caused, or at least exacerbated, by alcoholism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_mccarthy
