There are no real symptoms to warn you. And surprisingly, ⅓ of adults over the age of 20 have high blood pressure. So the problem starts early. And the older we get, the worse the numbers become. For example, over 60% of the population over the age of 65 has high blood pressure. For women, it’s even worse because of menopause.2,3 Sadly, 70% of the population doesn’t even know they have high blood pressure, which greatly increases your risk of death by 43%, in addition to other health ailments.2,3 Now, before I give you the ideal blood pressure numbers, let’s first talk about what the numbers even mean. The top number, known as Systolic, refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle. The bottom number, called Diastolic, refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. Both numbers are important in determining the state of your heart health. Numbers greater than the ideal range, indicate that your heart is working too hard to pump blood to the rest of your body. This obviously puts more stress on your heart, as well as your veins, blood vessels and arteries. In fact, this puts more pressure on your brain as well! So, what’s the ideal range?... Here’s a quick chart on blood pressure levels. As you can see, anything in the red that’s over 140/90 is considered “high” blood pressure. The yellow zone is better, but still a problem. Ideal range is in the green, which is LESS than 120/80. I prefer around 110/70 or 115/75. Now, the reason I like it lower is because studies1 have found that lower than 120 mmHG Systolic (top number) caused 43% lower risk of cardiovascular death 38% lower “heart failure” 27% in less deaths 25% lower deaths from “first” heart attacks 17% lower heart attacks 11% lower strokes So lower is better, as long as you feel fine… and preferably done naturally - through specific diet, exercise and supplements. So if you want to live longer, lowering your blood pressure levels to 120/80 or lower, is a huge benefit and a necessity for total health. I would skip the drugs and try to do it naturally with diet, exercise and supplements. And this is really important if you’re over the age of 40 because lots of clinical evidence that aging is a major contributing factor to hypertension because of the change in your hormones. So if you’re feeling stressed or your blood pressure is rising, you can almost instantly and quickly use today’s 3 pressure points to lower your blood pressure and help avoid anything bad from happening. Acupressure Point LI4 LI 4, which stands for “Large Intestine 4”, is an extremely useful acupressure point that is extensively used to treat chronic pain, acute stress and various types of diseases along with treatment for high blood pressure. This point is situated in the webbing between the forefinger and the thumb… right in the middle as you see here. It calms and balances blood flow throughout the body and clears stagnation. PC 6 PC 6 or Pericardium 6 is yet another important acupressure point for treating high blood pressure. It soothes and helps the heart and circulatory system in their proper functioning. This point is also known as the Inner Gate, and it is located on the inner forearm, approximately three finger-widths away from the wrist crease as you see here. This point can be stimulated by applying firm pressure to the point using your index finger or thumb. Again, apply pressure for about 20-30 seconds, then take a break and repeat as needed. G20 The G20 is below the base of your skull, in the hollows on both sides of the neck, between the two vertical neck muscles. Putting pressure here lowers your blood pressure, reduces headaches and stress by relaxing your nervous system. Use your thumbs, fingers, or knuckles to gradually apply pressure into the hollows of your skull. Close your eyes as you tilt your head back slowly. Take long, slow deep breaths as you hold for two to three minutes. Direct the pressure slowly and firmly into the center of your head. Your blood pressure numbers are affected by stress, food, and even alcohol. “Alcohol, what it does is when you drink it, it does tend to increase your blood pressure and dehydrate you,” explained Dr. Simon Grinshteyn, a hospitalist with Lee Health. If a patient has high blood pressure, doctors will typically inquire about their lifestyle. “That’s one of the first questions we ask is what is your alcohol intake, and most people like to say that they drink a lot less than they actually do,” said Dr. Grinshteyn. But doctors say blood pressure numbers don’t lie. “That’s why the standard of care is to double check the blood pressure at a different situation, at a different time,” he said. High blood pressure is considered anything higher than 130/80. But too much alcohol can keep your body dehydrated and your blood pressure high. “Alcohol can cause liver disease and nutritional deficiencies and weight gain,” said Dr. Grinshteyn. It’s why doctors recommend limiting your alcohol to two drinks for men per day and one drink for women per day. “Cutting back on the drinking can lower blood pressure about five points,” he said. To keep a healthy blood pressure, doctors also recommend regular physical activity, limiting your salt, and increasing your fruits and vegetables. “Heart disease, vascular disease, such as strokes, are very common and you wouldn’t even know if you have high blood pressure because it’s called the silent killer. Usually, you don’t have symptoms and then once you start having symptoms, your blood pressure is usually pretty high at that time,” said Dr. Grinshteyn. According to Scientific American:3 "Intersalt, a large study published in 19884, compared sodium intake with blood pressure in subjects from 52 international research centers and found NO relationship between sodium intake and the prevalence of hypertension. In fact, the population that ate the most salt, about 14 grams a day, had a lower median blood pressure than the population that ate the least, about 7.2 grams a day... For every study that suggests that salt is unhealthy, multiple ones reveal that it does not." So what about the studies that show lowering salt is good for blood pressure? Causes of high blood pressure Unhealthy diet and lack of exercise are the leading causes of hypertension today. Most foods we eat, fast food or items packed with preservatives and chemicals cause digestive problems in the body. Damaged digestion leads to the accumulation of ama (toxins), leading to hypertension. The food we eat is digested by our digestive fire (Jatharagni) to produce nutritious plasma. This plasma nourishes all other dhatus (body tissues) and helps produce healthy blood that circulates through multiple channels (srotas) in the body. However, as digestion worsens, the nutritive plasma stops producing digestive impurities or cravings. This mistress mingles with the plasma and turns it into sama (combined with ama) or massive. As a result, the blood thus produced becomes so heavy or sticky. This heavy blood (laden with impurities) flows through multiple channels and toxins begin to accumulate in the weakest channels of the body.
