Nutrition Lecture Part 1: Avoiding Disease

13:24
Originally published October 1, 2007 in The CrossFit Journal -- (http://journal.crossfit.com) Nutrition can be a touchy topic, like politics or religion, that people take very personally, but good nutrition is the foundation not only for general health but also for high-performance fitness. Much of the public information about diet, particularly the emphasis on low fat and high carbs, has resulted in a near epidemic of obesity and type II diabetes. In this first of a two-part lecture excerpt, Coach Glassman explores some of the science behind nutrition and the body, particularly the role of insulin in health and disease. "Syndrome X," the "deadly quartet" (obesity, glucose intolerance, high blood pressure, high triglycerides), and coronary heart disease, he claims, are avoidable through dietary means. Diabetes Complications - Is There A Link Between Diabetes And Hypertension

06:14
http://goo.gl/QCJ9b0 - How to reverse diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! Hi! I'm robo-Suzie and today I'll talk to you about Is There A Link Between Diabetes And Hypertension. Also don't forget to check out the link below, to find out, how this guy reversed his diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! But back to our topic. You are maintaining a healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise. You are checking your blood sugar levels and they are within target range. Your A1C is less than 7%. You are scheduled to see your healthcare provider for your routine visit. You're feeling good. "Everything looks good, it's just that your blood pressure has risen over the last few months", you're healthcare provider reports, "We are going to have to start you on blood pressure medications." You're bewildered. How can this be? Everything seemed to be going well. Why have you just been diagnosed with hypertension? Is there a link between diabetes and hypertension? The short answer to this question for people living with type 2 diabetes is YES. The link is explained by what clinicians call metabolic syndrome. I know that this word may mean very little to you. But this information is very important for anyone living with type 2 diabetes. I am going to explain what this means in as simple terms as possible. It is my intention that the knowledge is presented in an easy to understand format. That way you are better able to take action. It is only by taking action that you can live powerfully with diabetes. So let's dive right back into what is metabolic syndrome and how it links diabetes and hypertension. What is metabolic syndrome? Metabolic syndrome is a group of characteristics. It is not really medical illness. The important thing is that these characteristics put you at an increased risk for developing certain diseases. These diseases include type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Metabolic syndrome is also called metabolic X syndrome, syndrome X and also insulin resistance syndrome. Most clinical experts define metabolic syndrome as having three or more of any of the following: Obesity in the abdomen. Greater than 32 inches in women and 38 inches in men. High fasting blood sugar levels more than 100-125 mg/dl A high blood pressure of more than 130/85 mm hg or if you are taking blood pressure medication. A high triglyceride level of more than 150 mg/dl or a low HDL level of less than 40 mg/dl. The prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome. More than 2/3rd of the adult American population is either overweight or obese. The number of people with metabolic syndrome has risen just as the obesity epidemic in this country. Currently that rate is at 34% of the adult population. The following factors put you at risk for developing metabolic syndrome: Being overweight. In other words a BMI of more than 25. Smoking. Eating a diet that is high in carbohydrates. Smoking. Lack of exercise. Menopause. Family history of diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Increasing age. What health risks are associated with Metabolic Syndrome? People with metabolic syndrome are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. They are also at risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease consists of several diseases. I like to compare the cardiovascular system to the plumbing system in your house. Your symptoms depend on what part of the arteries gets clogged up. Cholesterol gets deposited in the arteries as fatty plaques. When the arteries in the heart get clogged up with plaque, this is called coronary artery disease. If the plaque collects in the blood vessels in the brain, it is called cerebrovascular disease and can cause a stroke.

Episode 66: The Ask Dr Cris Show: What is metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X?

01:35
In this episode I answer a viewer's question about metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X, what is it, how do I avoid it? For more information visit www.drcris.com.au Transcript Hi everyone, Dr Cris here with the Ask Dr Cris Show. Today’s question is about metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X. What is it? What can I do to prevent it? It is actually a growing problem in our society in general. It is a condition that has three parts to it, somebody is gaining weight around their mid-section, their cholesterol levels are going up, their blood pressure is going up and their sugar levels are going up. So, it is certainly a triple whammy. You don’t want to have this condition, it leads to a lot of problems with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, feeling very unwell and fatty liver disease. How do you prevent it from happening? Certainly having a diet that is in moderation obviously reducing alcohol and coffee, having a diet that has got lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and getting enough sleep, rest and exercise. All the things that we know we should be doing will help prevent Syndrome X or metabolic syndrome. It can be tested in the clinic and it is something your Doctor can easily screen through just one simple blood test and by taking your blood pressure. It can run in families and you can have a genetic susceptibility so all the more reason to be very diligent with your health if you have noticed there is a genetic susceptibility to the apply shape body type and some of those different health issues that can come with that. Thank you so much for your question. It is a very common question and a growing issue and it is something that I think, as a nation, is important for us to try and address before it becomes even more of a problem than it already is. If you have got any other questions please jump over to my website www.drcris.com.au and I look forward to answering them on the Ask Dr Cris Show. I hope that you are loving the Ask Dr Cris Show and if you would like to see more of the Ask Dr Cris Show please press subscribe.

It is the product of STROKE VOLUME – the amount of blood pumped in one heartbeat, and HEART RATE – the number of beats in one minute. An INcrease in either stroke volume or heart rate results in INcreased cardiac output, and vice versa. For example, during physical exercises, the heart beats faster to put out more blood in response to higher demand of the body. It is noteworthy that the ventricles do NOT eject ALL the blood they contain in one beat. In a typical example, a ventricle is filled with about 100ml of blood at the end of its load, but only 60ml is ejected during contraction. This corresponds to an EJECTION fraction of 60%. The 100ml is the end-DIASTOLIC volume, or EDV. The 40ml that remains in the ventricle after contraction is the end-SYSTOLIC volume, or ESV. The stroke volume equals EDV minus ESV, and is dependent on 3 factors: contractility, preload, and afterload. Contractility refers to the force of the contraction of the heart muscle. The more forceful the contraction, the more blood it ejects. PRELOAD is RELATED to the end-diastolic volume. Preload, by definition, is the degree of STRETCH of cardiac myocytes at the end of ventricular filling, but since this parameter is not readily measurable in patients, EDV is used instead. This is because the stretch level of the wall of a ventricle INcreases as it’s filled with more and more blood; just like a balloon - the more air it contains, the more stretched it is. According to the Frank-Starling mechanism, the greater the stretch, the greater the force of contraction. In the balloon analogy, the more inflated the balloon, the more forceful it releases air when deflated. AFTERLOAD, on the other hand, is the RESISTANCE that the ventricle must overcome to eject blood. Afterload includes 2 major components: - Vascular pressure: The pressure in the left ventricle must be GREATER than the systemic pressure for the aortic valve to open. Similarly, the pressure in the right ventricle must exceed pulmonary pressure to open the pulmonary valve. In hypertension for example, higher vascular pressures make it more difficult for the valves to open, resulting in a REDUCED amount of ejected blood. - Damage to the valves, such as stenosis, also presents higher resistance and leads to lower blood output. Can Weight Training Help Blood Pressure?

01:29
Hey fitness fanatics! Today we are discussing how you can lower your resting blood pressure with weight training. Brazilian researchers have analyzed the results of 17 studies involving more than 500 men and women in order to conclude that resistive exercising can have positive effects on blood pressure in people with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome, for those who are unaware, is a group of symptoms that include insulin resistance, abdominal fat deposition, abnormal blood fats, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. With weight training, resting blood pressure can be reduced by approximately 4 mmHg, although there are minimal effects on blood sugar, waist circumference, or HDL cholesterol. Weight training is an important and useful part of a full training regimen for people who are serious about taking back their health from the clutches of metabolic syndrome, but it should not be the only option explored. As always, thanks for watching. Drop by again tomorrow for another tip of the day from everyone here at XP Labs!

7 Reasons To Take A Nitric Oxide Supplement for Blood Flow

06:12
Learn more about the Redwood supplement here - https://www.truthnutra.com/redwood-yt The Role of Nitric Oxide Supplements The very term “NO supplement” is kind of misleading since such products don’t actually contain nitric oxide. Instead, they contain ingredients or substrates that boosts your body’s natural ability to make more NO. L-arginine is a common ingredient as we mentioned earlier. The amino acid L-citrulline is another one, as are nitrates. Studies show that taking a NO supplement improves tolerance of both aerobic and anaerobic activity, especially among inactive individuals just beginning a workout regimen. 1. Nitric Oxide Lowers Blood Pressure According to the Center for Disease Control, roughly one in three American adults (75 million people) have hypertension. Too many adults simply aren’t moving their bodies enough and are eating all the wrong foods in excessively high quantities. One of the benefits of nitric oxide is its ability to keep blood pressure in the normal range. NO is a vasodilator, meaning it widens blood vessels and allows for more ample blood flow. Studies show that impaired NO bioactivity leads to arterial stiffness, leading to hypertension. Studies also show that a diet high in nitrate-rich foods promotes healthy blood pressure. 2. Nitric Oxide Boosts Stamina Increased blood flow means more oxygen circulating in your body. Naturally, this improves your endurance when engaging in aerobic activity. One study found that subjects that consumed nitrate-rich beet juice for 15 days saw an increase in output during bouts of intense cycling exercises. Furthermore, research from the University of Exetershowed that nitric oxide supplementation can enable subjects to exercise up to 20% longer. Subjects on average also increased their race time by 1% to 2%. This may make NO useful when getting through those brief but grueling bouts of sprints or HIIT workouts. 3. Nitric Oxide Aids In Correcting ED Are you having a hard time getting hard? That’s a near-lethal to your manhood, no doubt. One of the greatest nitric oxide benefits for men is its ability to produce healthy erections. This is because NO allows the chambers inside the phallus to fill with blood, allowing it to harden. Studies show that the amino acids L-arginine and L-citrulline, both known for elevating NO levels, are effective for this, as well as the ingredients in supplements like Redwood. 4. Nitric Oxide Improves Memory and Learning The brain requires blood flow the same way as every other org-n. A nitric oxide booster is mainly taken as a workout-enhancing supplement. However, it’s also good for your mind. NO synthesis actually begins in the brain and is especially abundant in the hypothalamus where most of the memory-related tasks take place. We won’t get into all the complicated science, but one way NO works in the brain is by suppressing potassium ion channels, or Kv3. Kv3 is believed to be responsible for reducing the length of the electrical signals between the synapse across neurons. Studies show that NO may improve the brain's computational ability and also be a valuable aid in the treatment of age-related degenerative diseases. 5. Nitric Oxide Promotes Heart Health Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in America. We mentioned earlier the benefits of nitric oxide for relieving hypertension. In the same vein, it also promotes a healthy heart by preventing atherosclerosis (plaque formation in the arteries). NO is also needed to keep the heart pumping. If the heart isn’t pumping at a healthy rate, this inhibits blood flow and NO to all other parts of the body. Studies have confirmed NO’s role as an important signaling molecule in the blood vessels and heart. 6. Nitric Oxide Promotes Fat Loss A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that L-arginine supplementation reduced white fat gain. White fat is the visceral fat that manifests primarily in the belly in men and in the buttocks, and thighs in women. In this instance, nitric oxide increases the uptake of glucose in the muscles, thus allowing connective muscle tissue to burn more calories as energy. Another study revealed that NO may play an important anti-obesogenic role and increase fat oxidization in the liver and skeletal muscle. 7. Nitric Oxide Improves Digestion One of the lesser-known nitric oxide benefits is its ability to regulate gastric motility. It helps shuttle food along the digestive tract by promoting the movement of food from the stomach to the pyloric sphincter. Studies show NO mediates gastric blood flow and maintains the integrity of the mucus barrier. Other studies also suggest NO may heal stomach ulcers. In any case, don’t be surprised if you notice smoother movements and less constipation within weeks of taking a nitric oxide booster or consuming more nitric oxide foods.

DESCRIPTION: Plant-based diets appear to protect against metabolic syndrome, also known as syndrome X, which is characterized by the so-called "deadly quartet," abdominal obesity, high fasting sugars, high triglycerides, and high blood pressure. We see this same step-wise progression towards lower disease risk the more plant-based one's diet gets with high blood pressure (/), cataracts (/), diabetes (/), and obesity (/). So it's not all or nothing-- just adding more healthy plant foods to crowd out some of the animal and junk foods in the diet can offer significant protection. It does appear, though, that to maximize one's benefits one has to move towards maximizing the proportion of plants in the diet. Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? Dr Whiting on Cheating Death - Diabetes

10:05
https://phoenixvitamins.com/product/blood-sugar-support/ There are many potential complications from diabetes, including neuropathy, amputations, increased cardiovascular risks, kidney damage, cholesterol elevation and heart attacks. Neuropathy is the destruction of nerve endings, mostly in the hands and feet leading to numbness. Over time circulation may be impaired, reducing the bodys ability to heal wounds of the extremities. This circulation damage can systemic, affecting the entire arterial and venal systems. One of the most damaging diabetes side effects is to the kidneys. Over time, elevated blood sugar and insulin levels can damage kidneys beyond repair. The majority of amputations performed in all hospitals are directly related to diabetes. Diabetes so damages the circulation that even the smallest wounds can fail to heal, leading to amputations. Almost every diabetic has problems with cholesterol elevation. This is due to the diseases effect on the liver. Elevated cholesterol and diabetes is caused when the liver becomes toxic, from free radicals, and can no longer regulate cholesterol levels. Type II diabetics are also at a much higher risk for heart attacks. All of these complications can be greatly reduced or even eliminated by gaining control over blood sugar and insulin levels. The symptoms revolving around both diabetes and hypoglycemia are often referred to as syndrome X. These include elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, and often a severe overweight situation. When excess insulin is produced its primary function is to convert blood sugar to stored energy called triglycerides, which are then deposited in the fat cells. Elevated triglycerides are also a sign of syndrome X. By controlling insulin levels and insulin receptor site function, we can control all of the other side effects of the condition often referred to as syndrome X. Diabetes and weight gain are almost synonymous with each other. This is a result of severe carbohydrate intolerance. In fact moderate to severe obesity is a classic sign of syndrome X or insulin resistance. Insulin resistance occurs when insulin receptor site cells become desensitized to the action of insulin, requiring more and more insulin to convert blood sugar to its stored forms. Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar and results from the same basic problems of insulin excess. In these individuals, the excess insulin is lowering the blood sugar levels too far resulting in weakness, shakiness, confused thinking, etc. Significantly low blood sugar can be very dangerous and even fatal. This is key in any natural diabetes management programThe last phase of a natural approach to diabetes and other glucose metabolism disorders such as hypoglycemia and obesity are key targeted nutrients, which have been shown to both lower insulin levels and increase insulin receptor site function. Natural nutrients such as Chromium, Vanadium, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Cinnamon, Gymema Sylvestre, Bitter Melon, Syzgium, Hydroxycitric Acid, in the right combination and ratios have shown to be very effective in managing all disorders of glucose metabolism even PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome). This is a significant part of our natural diabetes management. Chromium has long been used to lower insulin levels by its effect on sparing blood sugar. Vanadium or vanadyl sulfate, has been clinically shown to increase insulin receptor site function by as much as ten-fold. Other herbal extracts such as Alpha Lipoic Acid, Cinnamon, Gymema Sylvestre, Bitter Melon, and Syzgium, each contributes a positive effect on both blood sugars and insulin production. Hydroxycitric Acid another ingredient we often use, helps the body to better utilize blood sugar for energy. It is often added to weight loss formulas as a result of this action. Through the addition of key nutrients such as Chromium, Vanadium, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Cinnamon, Gymema Sylvestre, Bitter Melon, Syzgium, and Hydroxycitric Acid, together with regular exercise and a diet that strictly controls carbohydrate intake, controlling diabetes naturally can frequently be realized. Carbohydrate intolerance affects millions of people contributing to such conditions as type II diabetes, hypoglycemia and much of the obesity found in industrialized nations. By controlling carbohydrate intolerance, we can conquer most of the epidemic numbers of these life-threatening health challenges. Insulin Resistance Diet - To Age Or Not To Age - Documentary By Leslie Kenton

43:58
To Age Or Not To Age - Documentary By Leslie Kenton from Leslie Kenton's Cura Romana. Like this? Watch the latest episode of Leslie Kenton's Cura Romana on Blip! http://blip.tv/leslie-kentons-cura-romana/watch As an awareness of the Syndrome X phenomenon of insulin resistance spread, researchers and clinicians have begun to understand that many of us who are not diabetic still experience insulin resistance. Responsible scientists began to ask questions about what causes it. The discoveries they are now making are nothing short of revolutionary. They not only offer us the power to slow the rate at which our bodies age. They are experimenting with protocols that can, potentially reverse negative conditions from hypertension, insulin resistance to cholesterol imbalances and depression, simply by changing the way you eat and live. This experience is one I became fascinated with when, several years ago, I made a television documentary in the Southern Hemisphere called To Age or Not To Age. It asked the question, ?Can we slow aging by making simple nutritional changes?? We also wanted to know ?Might it also be possible to reverse age-related degeneration that has already occurred?? And, finally, ?Can these things be verified in medically measurable ways?? We decided to carry out what is known as a base-line study to find out. We sent all participants to have the standard test of medical parameters checked before the project began?from fasting insulin and blood sugar levels through cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. These were carried out at a hospital which also had an excellent physiology laboratory, where exercise physiologists were able to establish each participant?s VO2Max, body fat percentage and lean body mass to fat ratio. To my surprise, every participant?including a 50 year old top athlete?showed abnormalities associated with Syndrome X. We then introduced our group to an Insulin Balance way of eating, which I devised. The experiment lasted only 5 weeks. Then we sent all our participants back to the hospital to have their parameters checked again. The results were mind-blowing. We had no idea that, after only 5 weeks of dietary changes, every abnormal medical parameter had normalized, except for cholesterol measurements in one woman, which took another few weeks to normalize. For me personally, the experiment confirmed yet again that the human body has a phenomenal capacity to heal itself, when given the opportunity to experience transformation at the deepest levels. This is a truth which, for the past four years, I have applied to helping to transform the lives of men and women all over the world, whom I have been mentoring on Cura Romana. The results continue to delight me.
