Akron Baby | Healthy Babies Delivered at Summa Health
Being Baby Friendly In 2015, Summa Health System – Akron Campus became the first hospital in the Akron-Canton area and one of just nine in Ohio to be awarded Baby-Friendly® status. This means Summa Health System - Akron Campus delivers on its pledge to support a healthy beginning for mothers and babies by providing the best possible breastfeeding support for new moms and their infants. Summa Health System – Akron Campus Maternity Services earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly designation from Baby-Friendly USA, this country’s authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The five-year designation comes after a rigorous review that is based on the “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding,” a specific set of evidence-based criteria that are proven to improve breastfeeding success and, ultimately, health outcomes. In total, there are fewer than 300 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers across the country. Summa Health is also well-known for its skin-to-skin program, wherein a newborn remains in close contact with the mother for the first hour after birth, which helps regulate body temperature, slows the baby’s heart rate and promotes a smooth transition for babies from the womb to the outside world. Summa is also a major advocate of 24-hour “rooming-in” with the mom and her newborn, providing a more family-centered experience that emphasizes bonding.

Rooming-In vs. Nursery Care - Summa Health
In an effort to support a healthy beginning for all mothers and babies, Summa Akron City Hospital pursued and earned recognition as a Baby-Friendly® Designated birth facility. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Baby-Friendly designated hospitals help provide the extra education and support new moms need to successfully breastfeed their babies. The five-year designation comes after a rigorous review of a specific set of evidence-based criteria that are proven to improve breastfeeding success and, ultimately, health outcomes. There are more than 20,000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide. Currently there are 290 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the U.S. Summa Akron City Hospital is the only facility in Summit County to earn this designation. To receive and keep a Baby-Friendly designation, hospitals and birthing centers must abide by the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, including: Have a written breastfeeding policy for all healthcare staff members. Train all healthcare staff so they have the skills to apply the breastfeeding policy. Tell all pregnant women about the benefits of breastfeeding. Help mothers start breastfeeding within one hour of birth. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to keep a good milk supply, even if they are separated from their babies. Give babies no food or drink other than breast milk, unless there is a medical reason. Practice “rooming in” by allowing mothers and babies to stay together 24 hours a day. Help mothers breastfeed whenever babies show signs they are hungry. Give no pacifiers or bottles to breastfeeding babies. Promote the formation of breastfeeding support groups and tell mothers about them before discharge from the hospital or clinic. All labor and delivery, mother-baby nursing staff, obstetricians, pediatricians and family medicine physicians were offered special training in how to best support mothers who wish to breastfeed their baby. Summa Health’s lactation consultants also are available for mothers who need additional assistance with breastfeeding. While research shows that breastfeeding really is best for the baby, there are mothers who opt to formula-feed their infants and Summa supports these moms as well. Many of the initiatives supported by Baby Friendly aid all mothers. Summa is well-known for its skin-to-skin program, “Let’s Stay Together,” where a newborn remains in close contact with the mother for the first hour after birth. Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth helps regulate body temperature, slows the baby’s heart rate and promotes a smooth transition for babies from the womb to the outside world. Summa is also a major advocate of 24-hour “rooming-in” to reduce separation of mother and newborn after birth. All mothers who choose to deliver their babies at Summa Akron City Hospital will have a special, supportive and unique delivery experience, offering all patients continued support and prenatal education to give every baby his or her best start in life. Call (800) 237-8662 to learn more about Baby Friendly, or register online for a personal maternity tour. http://www.summahealth.org/maternity

What are my childbirth delivery options? | Summa Health System
Choosing whether to take pain medication or not when delivering your baby is a personal choice. Debbie Horning, MSN, RNC-OB explains both options in this #maternitymyth video. You can’t control every aspect of the labor and delivery process, particularly in the case of a high-risk pregnancy, but having a plan will allow you the opportunity to discuss with your obstetrician your preferences of how you’d like your baby’s birth to be handled. It will not only assist before you go into labor, it will also communicate your wishes to other members of the team such as your labor-and-delivery nurse and your midwife, while you’re in active labor. Summa Health Engagement Award: Patricia A. Galon
Dr. Galon, associate professor in the College of Nursing at The University of Akron, has been highly-instrumental in creating a primary care clinic in University Park to serve persons with severe mental illness. The Margaret Clark Morgan Integrated Care Clinic is a collaborative effort among the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, Community Support Services, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the UA College of Nursing. The facility is housed at Community Support Services within the University Park neighborhood and is staffed by UA College of Nursing nurse practitioner faculty in addition to other health professionals. People with serious mental illness are a vulnerable population with limited access to appropriate physical care. Recent research indicates that people with severe mental illness die, on average, 15-25 years earlier than the general population. Despite several setbacks in the two-year planning phase, Dr. Galon and her peers persisted in trying to provide access to care in a convenient and familiar setting for this most neglected population. The clinic opened its doors in November 2008 and is already serving the community and providing training and research opportunities to nurse practitioners and their students.
