We were in Charleston SC near the end of April and the weather was beautiful! (with the exception of a few days of spring storms). For the first week, we stayed about an hour outside of Charleston (in Ridgeville, SC) at a small State Park called Givhans Ferry State Park. It was a tiny but nice and clean park with about 35 sites. There wasn't a lot to do in or around this park, which was perfect for us! It was the perfect opportunity to catch up on work and to rest. After that week, we moved into Charleston and set up camp at Lake Aire Campground. There were not too many RV parks close to the historic district and it took us about 25-30 minutes to get there from Lake Aire. While we were there, we went on a carriage tour of the historic district, went on several motorcycle rides around town and also out to Sullivan's Island, Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms. We had to cut our trip short, to take care of a few things back in Florida, but we were able to get out to see the beautiful 400-year old Angel Oak Tree. We also drove out to James Island County Park, where we will be staying on our trip back down South in the winter. We are really looking forward to going back there and seeing some of the sights that we didn't have to chance to this time! This light-filled home sits in a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It was designed and built by architect Michael O’Sullivan for his own family of six. The modest house has an L-shaped floor plan with a shed-roofed living pavilion running across the site and a lower bedroom wing extending into the backyard. The kitchen and dining spaces feature banks of tall, slender windows on three sides, making for constantly shifting light patterns as the sun arcs across the sky. Even the kitchen cabinets on the north wall are translucent to allow light through. The family lived on site in an old portable classroom during the home’s construction, which allowed O’Sullivan to devote long hours to the project — essentially all his free time for nearly two years. Neighbors also lent their assistance, with some putting in many hours of work as well. With no labor costs to cover and by making creative use of building materials, the architect was able to complete the 115 m2 (1,240 ft2) house for NZD 152,000. To keep costs in check, O’Sullivan made extensive use of plywood as a finish material, putting it on the walls and the bedroom ceilings. But he splurged in key places, using materials that enrich the whole house and give it a Mid-Century Modern sophistication. The living area ceiling is finished with cedar siding boards, fastened with an overlapping step pattern that adds texture to the room. A scattering of triangular cutouts conceal the recessed low-energy light fixtures. The centerpiece of the room is the kitchen island, wrapped in brass with a mirror-like sheen. Over in the bedroom wing, the home’s only bathroom is eye-popping, finished entirely with a green marble. There are two bedrooms, one of which is a large bunkroom shared by all the children. However, O’Sullivan did design the floor plan to allow for the later addition of more bedrooms. Not only does that kind of phased approach make the house more affordable to start with, it also keeps the project down to a more manageable size for an owner-builder who doesn’t have prior building experience. “Katrina Cottages” were tiny and small house designs from a number of architects intended to allow households to quickly rebuild following the devastating 2005 hurricane that destroyed tens of thousands of houses along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Katrina Cottages were designed to resemble traditional homes in the affected areas, but were scaled down in size to reduce the cost and allow quick construction of many units. This version, by Virginia architects GMF+ Associates, is one of the larger ones having three bedrooms in a floor plan of 1,112 ft2 (103.3 m2). There are two bedrooms up and one on the main level. The home shown in these photos was modified quite a bit from the original plans with a switchback stair instead of a straight run of steps. As a result, the kitchen was changed from a galley-style to a single-wall layout and the porch was shifted a bit to the left. With the modified floor plan, the ground-floor bedroom connects more directly to the living space via a wide hall and a pair of French doors. That makes the plan more flexible, allowing the bedroom to be used as part of the daytime living area. If you find the living space too small, there is the option of turning the bedroom into a small living room and having the existing living space become a larger kitchen and dining room, giving you a still compact two-bedroom home. Update: We have added the floor plan for the version shown here. The architects are now selling the revised plans on their website as the O’Connel Guesthouse.
