This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. The video explains how business-to-business (B2B) enterprises should go about choosing a B2B sales channel. First, it starts by defining the pros and cons of selling products through a distributor versus selling products through a sales agent. The pros of selling through a distributor include benefiting from the distributors network of salespeople, their contacts, their knowledge and their market insight. The cons of selling through a distributor include not knowing the final pricing customers see, not fully understanding where your company fits in the distributor's priorities and not knowing what types of mark-up or margins the distributor is taking. In terms of the sales agent, the pros are that you only have to pay a sales agent a commission on the sale. Also, you don't have to worry about who provides pricing to your customers. When selling through a sales agent, you control the pricing your customers see which means you control market pricing. However, the cons of selling through a sales agent or sales firm include the fact that many aren't committed long-term. Some sales agents aren't product specialists and some will sell anything to anybody. A company retreat is a great way to get your entire team on the same page. Pulling one off is not so easy, though. In this episode, Peter talks about why 352 started having retreats, and shares some of the best practices we've picked up along the way. Transcript: [Peter VanRysdam:] Hi, I'm Peter VanRysdam, one of the founding partners here at 352, and today I'm going to talk to you about planning the perfect company retreat. It's been something that's really important for us, and we're actually in retreat week here at 352. I've got some great feedback and tips that hopefully should help you guys. First, I want to talk about why we have retreats. It kind of seems obvious, but people think about retreats more like trust falls and things like that. That's not really what I'm talking about here. I'm going to tell you a little bit of story about the history of why we got into them, and maybe that will explain why they're important. We started here in Gainesville, Florida and then our company expanded. We added an office in Atlanta. We added an office in Tampa. It became really difficult to get all those people together. We actually went a few years where we never had everyone in the same room at one time, and we started to see some problems from that. I don't want to say things got adversarial, but it started to seem like people were kind of out on an island by themselves. Bringing them back together at least once a year was something that was really important for us to get that teamwork and camaraderie back together. That's kind of why we started. Once you're planning you want to figure out where to do your retreat. I would recommend that you want to get off site if possible. We've done our retreats before at hotel ballrooms, at a theater in town. There are lots of different options depending on the size of your company for where you could have your retreat. The reason why you want to get off site is you want to pull people away from their computers, away from their phones, otherwise every break you get they're going to be running to their desk checking their email and they're not going to be completely engaged. You want those breaks in the day to be times when people can interact with each other and interact with people that they don't always get to see. Getting people out of the office kind of breaks up that mindset and lets people know that this is important. Next, we want to talk about who. Obviously, everyone in your company, but how are those people going to work together? Here at 352 we have people that work in different groups based on a lot of different things. We have geography. We have Tampa, Atlanta, and Gainesville, so those people are comfortable with each other. We have individual development teams that are made of designers and programmers and development team coordinators that are obviously very comfortable with each other. Then, we have the groups of designers, the groups of programmers, sales, marketing. Those people work together on a daily basis. What we want to do when it comes time for the retreat is kind of break up those groups. We want to take a designer from Atlanta and pair them with a sales person from Tampa and a marketing person from Gainesville, for example, just to kind of break up those traditional groups that people are used to working in and start to kind of branch out and meet new people. I've found personally that's been really helpful for me to meet people that I wouldn't have necessarily interacted with on a daily basis otherwise, because after the retreat's over I've found that I reach out to those people when I need them for help. How, when you're actually doing the retreat, do you want to make it happen? A couple of tips that I have that have been effective for us that hopefully you can use as well. One of the first things is interaction. You want to get people up out of their seats. This isn't just a lecture. You want to have people talking to the rest of the group and talking in smaller groups on different group exercises. That's going to keep people from falling asleep and get them really engaged and into the message. A great way to do that is to hire an outside moderator. You can probably do that on a budget, too, by getting someone who's a colleague from maybe another company or vendor to come in and just kind of help facilitate the conversation. That can help you in a few ways. The biggest is if the CEO is just getting up and talking again then it's no different than a regular staff meeting. You want people to know that the retreat is something different. You have a goal in mind that you want to accomplish. By bringing in a moderator you may be able to lead the conversation down paths that it wouldn't have taken otherwise, and people are a little more comfortable... Hi I'm Karin Bellantoni and I'm here to talk to you about why you need a sales strategy. As we all know things have changed dramatically in the last five years. Companies are still stuck in denial, fear and other stages of grief. People are feeling like things are going to go back to the way they were. The only way to move forward is straight ahead not backwards. We have opportunities that didn't exist five years ago. This is a great time for companies to create new strategies around their sales teams and out preform the competition like they never have before. I say people because we work with people, people who make decisions inside companies and influence change. Are you open to change? Our clients are people, people who run companies and influence change. Their engaged in their companies success and there always looking for the next edge. Maybe you're on the top of your game and you see this economic downturn as a chance to crush the competition. Or maybe you're frustrated and you know you need to change but you're not sure where to start or you're too focussed on the how part. Could be a resource issue, either way you're not alone. We're not satisfied with the status quo. What is the difference between where you are today and where you could be? Your sales team is a valuable resource, like the brain you're only using a small percentage of its capacity. Are you really optimizing this investment? Are you leveraging your assets in a way that give your company, your customer and your sales people? The biggest win, until you have a strategy that taps this resource, you'll just be getting a fraction of the results you could be getting. We're at stand against waste, inside your company. How do you influence what you can't measure? Sales people are gleaning information on the street every day. This valuable knowledge capital that's not been transferred back to your company it's really unacceptable. Without proper feedback loops in place knowledge capital doesn't feed a sales persons growth. How can you influence what you can't measure? Is the absence of a plan, a plan to fail? Yes, band aids can work for a while but eventually you need to get to the route cause. We need to stop treating symptoms and get to the disease. Disconnecting form ease makes things really hard. In a survey we did last year a hundred out of a hundred companies told us they don't take the opportunity to create a strategy by a sales person. They just give these folks a number and expect them to get there. We think this is an incredible opportunity for companies wanting improve performance, manage key performance indicators and create some sustainable benchmarks for performance improvement. So, what is strategy; Strategy is a word that gets used a lot and often in a wrong context. Most people confuse it with goals. Essentially, strategy is a roadmap to how we are going to win. Where you are is your “as-is” state, and where you want to go is your “to-be” state. How you are going to bridge that gap is your strategy. So, if I was to teach strategy to my children I’d say, you wanna reach the finish line first. You may walk straight to the finish line at 5 kms per hour, Or you may extend your route, take more time as you have to travel more distance, but collect the speed boost on the way so you go faster at the end at around 20 km per hour. Collecting that speed boost to win would be your strategy. now let’s get back to the adult world, in business, we have 3 major layers of strategy; We have Corporate Strategy We have Business Strategy And we have Functional strategy So, let’s start with corporate strategy;
