Oral contraception pills work in a lot of different ways. First of all, most kinds prevent you from ovulating, which is when your body releases an egg that could potentially be fertilized by sperm. But your body also affects the endometrium or layer in the uterus where an egg would settle if it was fertilized. It also affects cervical mucus which makes it harder for sperm to get to the egg. There are lots of different ways that these pills work. Basically women can get pregnant on the pill if they don't take it at just the right time to prevent ovulation. Basically what I'm saying is once you've stopped taking the pill you can get pregnant any time. It usually does take women a couple of months just because that's normal. It takes most couples about six months on average to get pregnant assuming that they're not using any form of contraception. It definitely is possible for you to get pregnant even though you're not bleeding or actually seeing that you're having a period. As long as your body is ovulating or releasing that egg then you could get pregnant. Some women actually find out they're pregnant but they haven't had a period for a while and have no idea how far along they are because they haven't been able to track their cycles. It's very important to go to the doctor as soon as you find out you're pregnant and they can help figure out what your dates are, how far along you are, and make sure that all is well. The fact that you're not having regular periods yet does make it a little less likely that you're ovulating but you could still could be. It would be best to follow your doctor's advice, just wait a little bit longer and see if your body starts to return to normal. In the meantime since you're trying to get pregnant be sure you're taking a prenatal vitamin every day that has at least 400 micrograms of folic acid in it, that you're avoiding all alcohol, drugs, and tobacco products, and talk to your doctor about any and all prescription medications that you take regularly, any over the counter medication that you may take regularly or even just occasionally. For example, ibuprofen for cramping should not be taken during pregnancy and then some people are taking herbal supplements that aren't okay with pregnancy. Check with your doctor before you take anything and just think twice before you put anything in your mouth. Also make sure you're at a proper body weight. This decreases the chances of both you and the baby having complications during pregnancy. If you want to find out what your BMI is, or body mass index, you can go to babyyourbaby.org, click on "Pregnancy," and then there is a "Before Pregnancy," link and "Preconception Health," link. Once you've found that there will be a BMI calculator where you can plug in your weight and height and you'll be given a number. You want that number to be somewhere between 18 and 24. Once you're at that point you're at a good place to be before you get pregnant. Ask your doctor if you have any other specific questions about your situation. This in turn helps shorten your cycle. 1.Soak 2 tablespoons of crushed ginger pieces in 1 cup of hot water for a few minutes. 2.Strain it and add 1 tablespoon of honey to the ginger-infused water. 3.Drink the ginger decoction while it is warm. 4.Drink this 2 or 3 times a day during your period to help stop it earlier than usual. 7. Exercise Body weight plays a prominent role in determining the length of your menstrual cycle and the amount of menstrual blood flow. Women who are physically fit and have less body fat will naturally experience shorter and lighter periods. On the other hand, overweight or obese women tend to have longer and heavier periods. Exercising even during your menstrual cycle can help increase blood circulation in the body, which in turn will help reduce painful cramps and shorten your period. 8. Take Hormonal Birth Control Pills You can take oral birth control pills or get the birth control shot to help regulate and shorten your menstrual cycles. Hormonal contraceptive pills inhibit ovulation and fertilization, which in turn affects the uterus when no shedding of the uterine lining is triggered. The first sign of pregnancy is a missed period, and so whenever that day comes when your period should start and it doesn't, that's when you take a test. It sounds like you took a few of them, and they were all negative, and because of that, the likelihood of pregnancy is not great. But that leaves you wondering still, it sounds like, "Am I pregnant, is there any chance, and if not, why didn't I have a period?" It would be best for you to call your doctor and talk with them about your concerns. They can give you the best information based on their knowledge of your circumstances. You mentioned that for the better part of your life, you've had irregular periods and you're trying to have a baby so of course you're frustrated because this makes it very difficult to know when you're ovulating or if you're ovulating at all so that you can time intercourse with ovulation and conceive and achieve your dreams of having a baby. It sounds like you sought help from a doctor and that's good. That's always the first step because they can ask you questions about your history, perform an exam, and then decide what treatment is most appropriate for your situation. You brought up thoughts about birth control pills and how they do regulate you while on the pill but then you're wondering if when you stop taking them you stop being regular. Sometimes birth control pills are prescribed to women who are irregular because it does regulate their cycles long enough, at least for a couple of months, for a woman to try to get pregnant once she's gone off the pill. On average, it takes most couples about six months to get pregnant. You can actually get pregnant any time after you've stopped taking the pill if you're ovulating and you time intercourse just right with ovulation. As soon as you stop taking the pill, it doesn't take months and months for your body to return to normal cycles. In fact, like you were mentioning, it can regulate you at least for a couple of months and your cycles might start to spread out and become longer and longer and become more irregular again but there might be a window of opportunity where you could get pregnant if the stars align and everything comes together just right. Talk with your doctor again and based on their knowledge of your situation, they can recommend other treatments that might be more appropriate for you or if you want a second opinion from another doctor, that's okay to do, too, if desired. You have some questions about oral contraceptives, and exactly how they work, and how things work with the sugar pills that are at the end of a 28-day pack. Oral contraceptives are very effective at preventing pregnancy when taken as prescribed. When taken as prescribed, the chance of getting pregnant is less than 1%. However, a lot of women miss pills or don't start pills when they should, and so they end up getting pregnant 8% of the time. The pills that you take in your pack contain hormone that help to suppress ovulation, and they're given at specific times in your cycle to prevent ovulation. So it's important to start on the first day that you're supposed to start, and then at the end of a 28-day pack, the last 7 pills are sugar pills, but a lot of people like to have those available, because it just makes it so you're used to taking a pill every day and you don't forget to start on day 1 of your next cycle. Basically, you're able to get pregnant (or you're fertile) for 6 days out of each month - 5 days leading up to ovulation and on the day of ovulation. And ovulation typically happens about mid-cycle, and so of a 28-day cycle, you'd probably ovulate on day 14 and be able to get pregnant for 5 days leading up to that day, because sperm can actually live inside a woman's reproductive tract for 3 to 5 days. So you could potentially have unprotected intercourse on day 9 and actually get pregnant if you ovulate on day 14. It's possible, but the chance is low - about 5%. The chance of getting pregnant increases when you have intercourse closer to ovulation. The chance is actually greatest on the day before ovulation at about 30% to 35%. But of course, this all only applies if you're not taking contraceptive pills, using any other forms of contraception, or if you're not taking it as prescribed. Then you might ovulate, and pregnancy is possible. To specifically answer your question, you're not going to get pregnant when you're on your period, because you're not ovulating and that will never fall during your fertile window. You mentioned that a few months ago, your doctor put you on birth control pills, but now you want to have a baby, so you just stopped taking them on your own, and you're wondering if your body is going to be regulated, and if you're going to be able to get pregnant. And there are situations where doctors recommend birth control pills to regulate a woman's cycles so that she does have a greater chance of conceiving once she stops taking them. So for certain types of medical conditions, this can help. If you've gone in to the doctor because you had irregular cycles this might be the treatment the doctor prescribes. And it sounds counterintuitive to put you on something that would prevent you from getting pregnant, but actually, it helps to regulate your body so you're having regular cycles. And then once you stop taking the pill, you should start ovulating, and this gives you a predictable cycle, because in order to get pregnant, it's all about timing. You need to time intercourse with ovulation, and ovulation usually happens about mid-cycle, or 12 to 16 days before your next period is going to start. So if you were taking the pill, chances are that you were having a cycle every 28 days, and that means that your fertile window is going to be on days 9 through 14, most likely. Now ovulation isn't a perfect science, so sometimes it happens a little bit earlier or later than the norm. So since you're trying to conceive, I recommend tracking your bleeding patterns, and then count the first day of your period as the first day of your cycle. And to increase your chances of conceiving, start having intercourse every other day on the day your period ends, and continue with this until about day 17 or 18, just to cover for days past the day that you probably ovulated, in case you ovulate later than the norm. And if you do this, then you definitely have a great chance of getting pregnant. But do keep in mind that it takes most couples up to 6 months to conceive, so if it doesn't happen the first few months, don't get discouraged. Keep trying. And if you have been trying for 6 months without success, then talk with your doctor, and based on their knowledge of your situation, they might recommend trying a few things. And for sure, I hope it doesn't get to this point, but if it does, if you've been trying for a year without success, then it''s definitely time to talk with a doctor about infertility. 16 Reasons for Missed or Irregular Periods in Hindi | By Ishan While most women aren’t exactly excited about menstruation, most realize the importance of this bleeding when, suddenly, one month it either doesn’t appear or it shows up when least expected. What’s going on when you have irregular periods? Or why do they suddenly stop? Let’s start by understanding the mechanics of the menstrual cycle. During a woman's fertile life, the eggs mature within the ovaries in a cycle that typically lasts 28 days (this varies from woman to woman and even from period to period). On day five of the cycle, about twenty eggs start to mature in the follicles of the ovaries. Each of these follicles is like a tiny fluid-filled sac. As day fourteen approaches, one follicle has generally matured earlier than the others and releases its mature egg to be fertilized. What happens to the other follicles? They shrivel up and are reabsorbed by the body. But the mature follicle transforms into what is known as a "corpus luteum," which is responsible for producing the hormone progesterone to prepare the uterus to receive the fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized, it disintegrates and dies. Likewise, the corpus luteum withers. This causes the uterus to shed its lining, the endometrium, causing the bleeding of menstruation. What is a regular menstrual cycle? Having a regular cycle means that the interval between periods is consistent. As mentioned earlier, it’s usually 28 days, but depending on the individual woman, can range from every 20 to every 35 days. What is an irregular menstrual cycle? Having an irregular cycle means that the interval between periods varies each month. That is, sometimes they come every 28 days, sometimes every 20, sometimes every 30. Having irregular periods is very common.The causes can range from something insignificant to something that requires treatment. For example, if you're a teen, your body's hormones can fluctuate and take some time until they find a balance. Therefore, it’s normal to have an irregular period during adolescence or, sometimes, for your period not to arrive in a given month. But, before we get down to business, remember that the main cause for your period not to arrive is a pregnancy. So, if your period doesn’t arrive, check to make sure it’s not actually a baby on the way. Now, let’s look at the most common causes of irregular periods: 1.Eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia 2.Excessive weight gain or weight loss; extreme thinness and obesity both cause your menstrual cycle to become irregular or even to disappear 3.Stress or emotional problems 4.Hormonal problems, for example, when the thyroid malfunctions Travel 5.Over-exercising: If you're an athlete and train very hard, you may stop menstruating because your body wants to survive and save energy and menstruation requires energy 6.Problems with the pelvic organs (such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, for example) 7.Drugs like birth-control pills can affect the frequency and / or intensity of menstruation 8.Breastfeeding Irregular periods or a stop of menstruation can be due to a condition called "premature ovarian failure" which causes a woman to stop having her period before age 40. This can be caused by radiation, surgery or chemotherapy, in the case of a woman with cancer. Don’t forget that if you are sexually active and don’t want to get pregnant, you should use a birth control method you can trust so that irregular periods don’t bring you an unexpected surprise. Also, remember that even if your period goes away for a while, this does not mean you cannot become pregnant. You are still at risk! If you're not planning to have a baby, be careful! And, as always, I recommend that you consult your healthcare provider if you have questions about what’s causing your irregular periods. EC does not provide any protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, the virus that causes AIDS (only condoms can help protect against HIV and many other STIs. EC may cause some unpleasant side effects - like nausea and headaches. These side effects only last a few hours. Plan B usually costs between $35.00 - $50.00, though some Planned Parenthood or local health department clinics may offer it at a reduced rate. Plan B® and other emergency contraceptive pills that contain only the hormone progestin reduce your risk of pregnancy by 89%. This doesn't mean that 11% of women will get pregnant using these pills. It just means that this type of emergency contraception prevents 89% of the pregnancies researchers would expect to happen when women have unprotected sex. Usually, if 100 women have unprotected sex one time during the 2nd or 3rd week of their monthly menstrual cycle, 8 of them will get pregnant. But if those same 100 women use Plan B®, only 1 will get pregnant. And if you take these progestin-only emergency contraceptive pills within the first 24 hours after unprotected sex, they reduce your risk of pregnancy by up to 95%. In other words, emergency contraception works better the sooner you take it. EC can give you a second chance to prevent pregnancy after sex. You can use EC as many times in a month as you need it, but remember, it is not as effective as birth control that's used before or during sex, like the pill or condoms. It also causes more side effects than regular birth control methods. That's why you shouldn't use emergency contraception as your only protection against pregnancy. Learn how to calculate safe period to avoid pregnancy using a free, simple, natural and effective method. HOW TO CALCULATE SAFE PERIOD TO AVOID PREGNANCY: FREE, SIMPLE, AND EFFECTIVE METHOD! Calculating your safe period and using it in preventing unwanted pregnancy is free. It has no side effects; it is always available and quite effective if properly calculated and applied. But many people find this very confusing and difficult to calculate. And so, today, we will be looking at a simple method of calculating one's safe period and applying it in preventing pregnancy. 1) Okay, the first thing to note is that: you should start counting from the date you started bleeding (not the day you finished the bleeding). For example if you started bleeding on the 4th, you start counting from the 4th (not the day you finished but the day you started). The 4th will be day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and so on the day you started bleeding will be your day 1. 2) The second thing to note is: when it comes to calculating your safe period you must avoid Day-14 and days around Day-14: These days are the "dangerous days". So if you started bleeding on the 4th, that would be your day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14...then the 14th day -- and days around Day-14 should be avoided: these are the dangerous days because, these are the days the egg is likely to be released and the probability of getting pregnant is very high! 3) The third thing to note here is that: every other day apart from this danger period constitutes your safe period; so all these days aside Day-14 (and days around it) constitutes your safe period. As you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases and away from Day-14, the likelihood decreases. So, the day you started bleeding is part of your safe period but as you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases. Days around day 14...avoid, but other days are safe and down to your next period next month are safe. The danger period are the days to avoid intercourse which are the days around 14th day. I will repeat it one more time: The first thing is start counting from the first day you started bleeding that would be Day 1. The next thing is avoid Day 14 and days around day 14. I hope that helps but before we leave, 2 very important points to note: 1) First this method is best for ladies with a fairly regular menstrual circle where the difference in months is just few days. You might see your period 17th this month and 18th or 19th next month or 15th or 16th next month. The difference is just few days plus or minus. We can say you have a fairly regular menstrual circle then you can apply this method of contraception. 2) The second point is this method is not advisable for ladies with very short menstrual circle say for ladies that see their menses every 3 weeks and it is also not advisable for ladies with very long menstrual circle say for ladies that see their period once in every 2 months.
