You mentioned that you're pregnant and constipated and are wondering if it's going to hurt the baby if you strain to have a bowel movement and this is actually a really common question that pregnant women have. All that increased abdominal pressure can be a little scary, you want to make sure you don't push anything out. But there are a couple of things that are important to know. Number one is that constipation can be a normal part of pregnancy., Bowels just kinda slow down so if you're having issues with this you should do whatever you can to remedy the situation. Drink more water, eat high fiber foods, and talk to your doctor about a stool softener, and if that isn't enough then they can give you additional advice on what you can do in order to help witht eh constipation. Ultimately though, as long as you're not in labor or anything just straining while having a bowel movement should not hurt your baby or you, so that's important to understand. But also recognize that an increase in pressure, like sometimes it feels like you have to have a bowel movement, can be associated with contractions. And if you're preterm or less than 37 weeks, and you're having more abdominal cramping or back aches or abdominal tightening or this pressure sensation then you should talk to your doctor about it and then they'll ask you more specific questions about it and will be able to determine if they need to check you out for preterm labor issues. Another thing to consider is that if you are contracting and you feel like you're in labor. Let's say you're full term, you’re 38 or 39 weeks, you're at home contracting every 10ish minutes or so, it's not quite time to go to the hospital if everything else is looking good, but you're just trying to buy some time at home. The last thing you want to do if go on the toilet and strain to have a bowel movement because if you have that sensation to push while you're in labor then it might be a little bit concerning because you might go from 0 to 60 really fast and occasionally there are people who deliver babies in the toilet. On labor and deliver I would frequently tell my patients that they were able to go have a bowel movement if they needed to, but it needed to be something that could happen quickly and easily because it's not something that you should strain over while you're in labor because again it's probably not the need to have a bowel movement, it may be the baby’s head putting pressure on the rectum giving the sensation that you need to have a bowel movement. Hi there. Eric Bakker. Thanks for coming back to my channel and having a look at another video. I always appreciate the support from you guys out there, and it's for you people I make these videos. I have a question here from somebody, asking if magnesium is good for constipation. Magnesium is excellent for constipation. In fact it's been used for a long, long time. When I renovated this house ... I've got an old part of the house there and I've got a new extension here at the back of the house from where I'm talking. In fact, right underneath this house, when we put the foundation down, we took an old shed, an old wooden shed away off this property and guess what we found? We found a whole heap of bottles poked underneath the shed, and these bottles were from about a hundred years ago. I found one bottle, and it had milk of magnesia on it with old faded label. And I found many other medicine bottles. Well, that milk of magnesia had England on it, so it would have come over from England a long, long time ago, probably turn of the century. Milk of magnesia, or magnesium sulfate has been used for about 150, 200 years for constipation. Heavy users though can develop a kidney problem, so you need to be careful with these strong types of magnesiums, not to use loads and loads of them. Especially in the old days when people didn't really understand the bowel function or constipation, and they'd eat lots of meat and drink lots of ale, and have heavy gravies, things like that, and not understand that you need to eat more fresh, and to be more active and mobile, and drink more water. People didn't know that. So they would just drink milk of magnesia to get the bowel working. And it worked alright. But then they would rely too heavily on it. Doesn't happen so much today. But if you've got a kidney problem, just be careful with magnesium. Magnesium is citrate, or citrate, whatever you want to call it, is a very good form of magnesium for cleaning out the bowel. And it does so by when you swallow, and it goes through the digestive track, it goes through the large intestine particularly, it creates this osmotic effect where it attracts water to it. So as the bowel sheds a little bit more water, it becomes looser inside and easier to pass out a motion. So magnesium citrate, 500 milligrams, twice a day. You could take magnesium sulfate, which is a little bit stronger. You can take magnesium oxide, which is found in product colon cleansing products. So these also have the oxide as an ability to oxygenate the bowel while attracting water to it, so it's a very, very good product. I often recommend a bit of a bowel flush, or bowel cleanse prior to getting to a detox. It doesn't make sense to go detoxification if you have constipation issues. So taking some magnesium for seven or ten days as a bowel purge, or bowel flush is a clever idea to clean that bowel out, to wash it out. So I really like magnesium and I think it's a fantastic supplement to have in your diet in general. Most people today suffer from stress, burnout or general fatigue to some degree, and magnesium is a God send for most people who can't sleep properly, are irritable, have fatigue, have blood sugar dysregulation. Magnesium is a fantastic supplement for that reason. Certainly try magnesium if you ... I particularly like it for people my age, 50 plus. I think it's a fantastic supplement to take. Try and take 500 milligrams before bedtime with a little bit of water, and see how that goes. It should help you quite a lot. Yes, I do endorse magnesium for constipation. I think it's a very good supplement. You just have to work out the correct dosage for you, and the other spinoff is about 57% of your bone is actually magnesium. You also need magnesium for the proper regulation of the heart, and the muscles and the nervous system. You need magnesium for blood sugar regulation and a whole lot of other things. Is it normal to be constipated while pregnant? When you are pregnant, you are not eating for two, but you do need to drink for two. I do drink a lot of water. Your body has to filter waste for you and the baby, and the extra liter or two of blood that your body produces while pregnant to sustain the baby. That’s why I’m bloated and anemic and peeing a lot. What does that have to do with the constipation? If you are not drinking two to three times as much water, your body takes extra water out of your food. You end up more constipated because that’s the desiccated waste left over. So I need to drink more water to cure the constipation. That’s a standard treatment for it. If I already felt bad about flushing the low flush toilet so often after pooping, now I might as well camp out in the bathroom. So cut back on the caffeine, which dehydrates you and stimulates your kidneys. I’m not cutting back on the chocolate, not when I’ve got an excuse to get all the chocolate dipped fruits and desserts I want. I mean, cut back on the tea and coffee and soda. In fact, drinking Coke, which is similar chemically to stomach acid, can make you more likely to throw up, too. I know that would cause more dehydration. And you said dehydration can cause constipation. Is it safe to take stool softeners? Probably, but check with a nurse before you take a medication. It is a lot better to eat a bowl of oatmeal. I hate oatmeal. So try those Fiber One bars they make like chocolate brownies and lemon bars. As long as it does not taste like I’m eating rabbit food. Speaking of rabbit food, you could solve the problem by eating more carrots, apples and high fiber vegetables. All that stuff about eating healthy, and now there’s another good reason in the end to do so. I’m worried I’m going to have this problem all throughout the pregnancy. Do not worry, you tend to lose it all at the end. Super-pooping is a common consequence of labor. I hope I do not poop on the nurse.
