Diabetes is a serious problem that affects hundreds of millions worldwide, and the World Health Organization predicts that by 2030, diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death*. Also accelerating is the number of people with prediabetes, a little-known condition where the blood sugar level is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be type 2 diabetes. Merck is raising awareness of this global epidemic, along with the good news that prevention is possible with lifestyle changes and monitoring. *WHO Diabetes Fact sheet, July 2017 About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. By Carla Roberts (KUTV) If untreated, diabetes can cause blindness, kidney failure and even death. But what makes the disease so dangerous is that many people dont even know they have it. Dr. Sarah Woosley says that people can go 10 years with diabetes and not even know it. Their body is slowly losing its ability to produce the amount of insulin they need and they then turn into a person who has been diagnosed with diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes can cause heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. Doctor Woosley says you should get tested for diabetes if you are: physically inactive; have high blood pressure; have high cholesterol; have a family history of diabetes. We encourage folks to get in because early intervention can preserve our eyes, preserve our kidneys and lower our risks of heart attacks and strokes. So finding out if you have it gives you a better chance of stopping it in its tracks. Another way to stop diabetes in its tracks is to eat healthy and exercise regularly. In fact, one of the causes of diabetes is obesity. Read More At : https://t.co/qBla3iAjGP Subscribe To Our Channel :https://goo.gl/nZa4LU A Leading Cause of Death in AmericaIn the last 15 years, the number of people in the United States with diagnosed diabetes has more than doubled, reaching 14.6 million in 2005. Although more than 20.8 million Americans have diabetes, 6.2 million do not know they have the disease.People with diabetes have a shortage of insulin or a decreased ability to use insulin, a hormone that allows glucose (sugar) to enter cells and be converted to energy. When diabetes is not controlled, glucose and fats remain in the blood and, over time, damage vital organs. Diabetes can cause heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, pregnancy complications, lower-extremity amputations, and deaths related to flu and pneumonia. Heart disease is the leading cause of diabetes related deaths, and death rates are about 2–4 times higher for adults with diabetes than for those without the disease. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 most often appears during childhood or adolescence. Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity and physical inactivity, accounts for 90%–95% of diabetes cases and most often appears in people older than 40. However, it is now being found in younger people and is even being diagnosed among children and teens. Diabetes has its greatest effects on older adults, women, and certain racial and ethnic groups. One in five adults over age 65 has diabetes. African American, Hispanic, American Indian, and Alaska Native adults are twice as likely as white adults to have diabetes. In addition to the millions of Americans with diabetes, an estimated 41 million U.S. adults aged 40–74 years have prediabetes—that is, their blood sugar level is elevated but is not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk for developing diabetes.

http://goo.gl/QCJ9b0 - How to reverse diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! Hi! I'm robo-Suzie and today I'll talk to you about Diabetes - African Americans Deadly Foe. Also don't forget to check out the link below, to find out, how this guy reversed his diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! But back to our topic. Diabetes is having a devastating effect on the African American community. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in African Americans and their death rates are twenty seven percent higher than whites. Over 2.8 million African Americans have diabetes and one third of them don't know they have the disease. In addition, twenty five percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 - 74 have diabetes and one in four African American women, over the age of 55, have been diagnosed with the disease The cause of diabetes is a mystery, but researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play roles in who will develop the disease. Heredity. Researchers believe that African Americans and African Immigrants are predisposed to developing diabetes. Research suggests that African Americans and recent African immigrants have inherited a "thrifty gene" from their African ancestors. This gene may have enabled Africans to use food energy more efficiently during cycles of feast and famine. Now, with fewer cycles of feast and famine, this gene may make weight control more difficult for African Americans and African Immigrants. This genetic predisposition, coupled with impaired glucose tolerance, is often associated with the genetic tendency toward high blood pressure. People with impaired glucose tolerance have higher than normal blood glucose levels and are at a higher risk for developing diabetes. What is Diabetes? Diabetes, commonly know as "sugar diabetes", is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly produce or use insulin. Insulin is needed by the body to process sugar, starches and other foods into energy. Diabetes is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure; diabetes is a serious disease and should not be ignored. Diabetics often suffer from low glucose levels (sugar) in their blood. Low blood sugar levels can make you disorientated, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have headaches, have sudden mood swings, have difficulty paying attention, or have tingling sensations around the mouth. Types of Diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes can cause damage to the heart and circulatory system, but pre-diabetes can often be controlled by controlling blood glucose levels. By controlling pre-diabetes you can often prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 or juvenile-onset diabetes usually strikes people under the age of 20, but can strike at any age. Five to ten percent of African Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes are diagnosed with this type of the disease. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces little or no insulin and this type of diabetes must be treated with daily insulin injections. Type 2 or adult onset diabetes is responsible for ninety to ninety-five percent of diagnosed diabetes cases in African Americans. Type 2 results from a condition where the body fails to properly use insulin. According to the American Diabetes Association, "Type 2 is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don't exercise and who have cholesterol problems." In the early stages it can often be controlled with lifestyle changes, but in the later stages diabetic pills or insulin injections are often needed. Pregnancy related diabetes or gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes is often associated with high glucose blood levels or hyperglycemia. Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women. The disease usually goes away after delivery, but women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life. Symptoms of Diabetes. The most common symptoms of diabetes include: excessive urination including frequent trips to the bathroom. increased thirst. increased appetite. blurred vision. unusual weight loss. increased fatigue. irritability. Complications from Diabetes. Diabetes can lead to many disabling and life threatening complications. Strokes, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and amputations are common complications that effect African Americans who have diabetes Kidney Disease. "Diabetes is the second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans, accounting for about thirty percent of the new cases each year," says the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Up to twenty-one percent of people who develop diabetes will develop kidney disease.

Diabetes Mellitus - Epidemiology and history of diabetes mellitus - One Health 👉👉👉 Get It Here: http://tinyurl.com/lydyceh 👈👈👈 Epidemiology of diabetes mellitus As of 2016, 422 million people have diabetes worldwide, up from an estimated 382 million people in 2013 and from 108 million in 1980. Accounting for the shifting age structure of the global population, the prevalence of diabetes is 8.5% among adults, nearly double the rate of 4.7% in 1980. Type 2 makes up about 90% of the cases. Some data indicate rates are roughly equal in women and men, but male excess in diabetes has been found in many populations with higher type 2 incidence, possibly due to sex-related differences in insulin sensitivity, consequences of obesity and regional body fat deposition, and other contributing factors such as high blood pressure, tobacco smoking, and alcohol intake. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that diabetes mellitus resulted in 1.5 million deaths in 2012, making it the 8th leading cause of death. However another 2.2 million deaths worldwide were attributable to high blood glucose and the increased risks of cardiovascular disease and other associated complications (e.g. kidney failure), which often lead to premature death and are often listed as the underlying cause on death certificates rather than diabetes. For example, in 2014, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimated that diabetes resulted in 4.9 million deaths worldwide, using modeling to estimate the total amount of deaths that could be directly or indirectly attributed to diabetes. Diabetes mellitus occurs throughout the world but is more common (especially type 2) in more developed countries. The greatest increase in rates has however been seen in low- and middle-income countries, where more than 80% of diabetic deaths occur. The fastest prevalence increase is expected to occur in Asia and Africa, where most people with diabetes will probably live in 2030. The increase in rates in developing countries follows the trend of urbanization and lifestyle changes, including increasingly sedentary lifestyles, less physically demanding work and the global nutrition transition, marked by increased intake of foods that are high energy-dense but nutrient-poor (often high in sugar and saturated fats, sometimes referred to as the "Western-style" diet). Transcript: From Module 9 I looked at the health issues associated with African Americans. I found that diabetes is a leading cause of death for African Americans and there is a higher prevalence among African Americans compared to non-hispanic whites. This made me ask the question why do African Americans have a higher rate of diagnosis compared to non-hispanic whites? What is causing this difference between these two ethnicities? I speculated that it could possibly be due to the difference in diet and a difference in the way their bodies process and store fat. From the readings, it was clear that non-hispanic whites had lower obesity rates than other ethnic groups and this led me to believe that the higher risk of diabetes is associated in some way with obesity. Also, diabetes is the inability of the body to regulate blood sugar using insulin, so it made more sense to me for the cause to be related toward biological factors as opposed to environmental psychological or socioeconomic factors.I found that African Americans have a higher risk of being diagnosed with diabetes not because of socioeconomic, psychological or environmental factors but rather of biological risks. Socioeconomic disparities do play a small factor, however, biological factors have a much greater influence. These factors include a combination of body mass index, waist measurement, fasting glucose levels, lipids, blood pressure, and lung function. In a more general sense my research showed the true reason for the disparity is obesity. One genetic idea that has been suggested regards something called a “thrifty” gene. Scientists suggest that over the millions of years of evolution a gene that results in efficiently stored fat exists in some ethnic groups more than others. Efficiently stored fat could increase the chances of survival by combatting starvation however in today’s society it could lead to obesity and other health issues .This could possibly explain why African Americans are at a higher risk of diabetes; it is because of higher rates of obesity that could be associated with this thrifty gene. The Real Connection Between Diabetes and Cancer and how to lower both risks at the same time Over 29 million people in the United States have type 2 diabetes. The dangerously high prevalence of overweight and obesity is at the heart of this problem. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure in adults, and doubles the risk of heart attack and stroke. Diabetes also increases the risk of several cancers. In a number of studies, diabetic patients have been shown to have an elevated risk of colorectal cancer and non-diabetics with elevated postprandial glucose levels also have a higher risk of colorectal cancer than individuals with normal glucose tolerance. A review that analyzed data from several studies found that diabetic patients are 30% more likely to develop colorectal cancer, 20% more likely to develop breast cancer, and 82% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer. Heart disease. The world health organisation research also concludes that cardiovascular disease is the cause of between 50% to 80% of deaths amongst the diabetic community. Therefore, based on 2004 figures of 374 million deaths by WHO is:- 1. 187 million deaths are recorded due to diabetes based on 50% death rate. 2. 299.2 million deaths due to heart disease on the higher percentage of 80% Stroke can be known as the brain attack. The risk of a stroke for somebody with diabetes is 2 or 3 times higher and more likely. Kidney disease can impact anyone’s life across the ages. The communities very likely to develop kidney disease were sighted as African, American, Hispanic & American Indians. There is 30.3 million Americans that have diabetes and 7.2 million Americans undiagnosed. There is 84 million Americans that are pre-diabetic and 1 of 3 don't know they have it, are you one of them? There is 1.5 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes every year. Please listen to this video as I share how I went undiagnosed for 1 1/2 years. Don't be one of those people that doesn't know they have it. Diabetes is the 7th leading causes of death in America. Education about this disease is vital in out country. A better more understanding way to explain the test is here https://youtu.be/EWqs0qdXeZ4 Basically in simple English the hemoglobin test....HbA1C test the % of red blood cells that are damaged by blood sugars. Sugars (glucose) will stick to the different proteins, palates and blood cells. When this happens there is damage to the cells. What they are measuring is the % of red blood cells damaged. They are checking what they call a hemoglobin percentage HbA1C. That video is the best put in simple English for most to understand without getting to technical 🤗👍 Thank you for watching!!! Proceeds from this video will be given to the American Diabetes Association!!!

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes heart attack, stroke and heart failure, is the leading cause of death in the world today, with an estimated 17.5 million deaths per year. On September 15, 2016, we hosted the Halving Global Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Rates symposium. The symposium highlighted the growing global burden of CVD and the powerful evidence generated from population-level surveys and studies in China, Cuba, India, Mexico, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The sessions explored tobacco use, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, main risk factors that have a direct impact on CVD morbidity and mortality. Sir Richard Peto, Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford, provided the keynote address on primary and secondary prevention. The CDC Foundation presented its Hero Award to Sir Richard in recognition of his efforts to save countless lives worldwide by uncovering the root causes of CVD and cancer and bringing data to bear on public policies. Diabetes has become a massive epidemic. Nationwide, the rates have nearly doubled in the past 20 years, and numbers keep getting worse. More than 29 million American adults have diabetes, and the CDC projects that 1 in 3 adults could have diabetes by 2050. It's the 7th leading cause of death in the US, accounting for about $245 billion in medical costs and lost productivity each year. Clearly, current treatment and prevention approaches aren't working. To dig into the issue further, and discuss natural solutions that actually work, we bring back brilliant diabetes expert Dr. Jason Fung. Dr. Fung and I both remain passionate about the topic because we've seen countless lives change from strategically implementing simple, FREE, ancient healing strategies like fasting and ketosis to reverse the disease. In this Video We Will Explain What is Diabetes? High Blood Glucose Levels Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes What is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defects in insulin secretion, or its action, or both. Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes (as it will be in this video) was first identified as a disease associated with "sweet urine," and excessive muscle loss in the ancient world. Normally, blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level. When the blood glucose elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level by promoting the uptake of glucose into body cells. In patients with diabetes, the absence of insufficient production of or lack of response to insulin causes hyperglycemia. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition, meaning that although it can be controlled, it lasts a lifetime. How many people in the US have diabetes? • Diabetes affects approximately 29.1 million people (9.3% of the population) in the United States, while another 86 million people have prediabetes and don't know it. • An estimated 8.1 million people in the United States have diabetes and don't even know it. • Over time, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. These types of damage are the result of damage to small vessels, referred to as microvascular disease. • Diabetes also is an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases. This is referred to as macrovascular disease. • From an economic perspective, the total annual cost of diabetes in 2012 was estimated to be 245 billion dollars in the United States. This included 116 billion in direct medical costs (healthcare costs) for people with diabetes and another 69 billion in other costs due to disability, premature death, or work loss. • Medical expenses for people with diabetes are over two times higher than those for people who do not have diabetes. Remember, these numbers reflect only the population in the United States. Globally, the statistics are staggering. • Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States listed on death certificates in recent years. Join Brian Rodrigues, PhD as he speaks to the correlation or Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes. 5-6% of Canadians are currently diagnosed with diabetes. In people with diabetes, inadequate pharmaceutical management predisposes the patient to heart failure, which is the leading cause of diabetes related deaths. One instigator for this cardiac dysfunction is change in fuel utilization by the heart. Thus, following diabetes, when cardiac glucose utilization is impaired, the heart undergoes metabolic transformation wherein it switches to using fats as an exclusive source of energy. Although this switching is geared to help the heart initially, in the long term, this has terrible end results. These include the generation of noxious by products which kill cardiac cells, reduce cardiac function and ultimately result in an increased morbidity and mortality. The objectives of his studies is to examine the mechanisms behind this “metabolic switching” during diabetes. Given the disturbing news that diabetes is rampant across the globe, and that its incidence will double in Canada, results from these studies will help in gaining more insight into the mechanism(s) by which the heart fails during diabetes. This may assist other researchers in devising new therapeutic strategies to restore metabolic equilibrium, to help prevent or delay heart disease seen during diabetes.

Because diabetes treatments are so common today, it can be easy to forget that the disease can be fatal. In fact, it is approximately the seventh leading cause of death worldwide. Luckily, many people diagnosed with diabetes today enjoy healthy, otherwise normal, lives thanks to advances in treatment, and most notably insulin. However, this development is relatively recent, and only 100 years ago to receive a diabetes diagnosis was to be condemned to a life of near starvation and early death.
