American Cancer Society’s Kenya Radiotherapy Program

02:08
In Kenya, patients may wait longer than 18 months for radiation treatment because of the limited number of machines in public hospitals. Currently more than 1,500 patients are waiting for treatment. Your donation will be used to support American Cancer Society’s Global Cancer Treatment program to subsidize radiation treatment at a private hospital. This program provides treatment to the most medically vulnerable for $60 per session, a price negotiated to be 40% lower than the standard rate. The American Cancer Society is working globally to eliminate the pain and suffering of cancer because where you live shouldn’t determine if you live. Click here to donate: https://www.crowdrise.com/shutterfly-acs. You'll receive a FREE 8x8 photo book from Shutterfly when you donate at least $1 to the American Cancer Society by August 19, 2016.

American Cancer Society Revises Cancer Screening Guideline Process

02:46
(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) Atlanta, GA -- December 21, 2011 -- The American Cancer Society has revised its guideline formation process to achieve greater transparency, consistency, and rigor in creating guidance about cancer screening. The new methods align with new principles from the Institutes of Medicine (IOM) by creating a single generalist group for writing the guidelines, commissioning systematic evidence reviews, and clearly articulating the benefits, limitations, and harms associated with cancer screening tests. The new process is outlined in a Special Communication in the December 14, 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The new process stresses transparency, with activities and timelines posted publicly on the American Cancer Society web site. To align with the new IOM standards, the ACS process will separate expert input from the writing of the guideline, so an independent writing group will receive appropriate subspecialty expertise while protecting it from the appearance of professional conflict of interest. The process will incorporate a systematic evidence review that will use methods consistent with IOM standards, and the guidelines group will grade the strength of its recommendations. The guidelines will explicitly describe potential benefits and harms of screening and will articulate any differences between its recommendations and those of other groups and the reasons for those differences. The new process will conclude with a formal review that will include opportunities for experts and professional organizations to comment on draft guidelines. Finally, the guideline process itself will be reviewed periodically by an independent advisory group to assure clarity, utility, and influence of the guidelines. There will be a formal review and rewriting of every ACS cancer screening guideline at least every five years. "Historically, the ACS has convened ad hoc screening guideline groups to come up with its recommendations for methods of cancer screening," said Tim Byers, M.D., MPH, of the Colorado School of Public Health. Dr Byers headed the Guidelines Process Workgroup convened by the ACS Board of Directors in 2010 and co-authored the new report. "Although that approach has resulted in highly credible and useful guidelines, we saw that the ACS process could be improved in terms of consistency, transparency, scientific rigor, and communications. This new process should ensure that ACS will remain the national leader in creating and communicating trustworthy information to guide clinical practice, personal choices, and public policy about cancer screening." How to Get Well, Stay Well & Never Be Sick Again- Raymond Francis (Nov 2017)

01:23:25
"How to Get Well, Stay Well, and Never Be Sick Again” was presented by Raymond Francis DSc.,MSc, RNC on November 16, 2017 at the Silicon Valley Health Institute. Raymond Francis, D.Sc., M.Sc., RNC has been called a “brilliant advanced thinker” and has been cited as “one of the few scientists who has achieved a breakthrough understanding of health and disease.” On the cutting-edge of health science, Raymond is an internationally recognized leader in the field of optimal-health maintenance and a pioneer in transforming our failed disease-care system to a true health-care system. He is a chemist by training, a graduate of M.I.T., a bestselling author, and a world-class speaker. At the height of his career as president of a management consulting firm, Raymond’s health began declining. What began as fatigue and allergic reactions, ended up as several autoimmune syndromes, chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue, and acute liver failure. At age 48, his imminent death was considered a medical certainty. With only days to live, he used his knowledge of biochemistry to save his life and restore his health. Now age 80, Raymond enjoys an extraordinary level of health and vitality. Since his recovery, he has devoted himself to helping others to get well and stay well. To teach others how to achieve the level of health he has achieved, Raymond devised a new health model, The Beyond Health Model. This model cuts through the complexity and confusion, takes the mystery out of disease, and makes health simple for the average person. This model is so simple it can be taught to a child, yet so powerful that many have used it to cure themselves of incurable illnesses. Raymond is a former U.S. Army officer who served in a combat infantry division. He is listed in standard references including: Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in Finance and Industry. He has written five breakthrough books, the international bestseller Never Be Sick Again, Never Be Fat Again, Never Fear Cancer Again, Never Feel Old Again, and The Great American Health Hoax. How Cancer Industry Started Cut Poison Burn Protocol

01:27:48
This hard-hitting documentary, Cut Poison Burn, takes a rare look at what happens when a cancer patient questions the "standard of care" and attempts to make personal choices promising the best results for the patient and not the cancer industry. U.S.'s War on Cancer lead to almighty dollar Sadly, according to the DVD, all paths in the U.S.'s 'War on Cancer' lead to the almighty dollar Unless you've personally walked the path – or have accompanied a loved one – through this brutally convoluted, hostile maze, you probably have no clue as to the hidden and well-disguised demons awaiting the unsuspecting visitor. And so in lies the value of this bold and daring documentary. The opportunity to catch a glimpse of the path before you or a loved one join the 1-in-3 women or 1-in-2 men who will be forced to walk it during their lifetime. And perhaps the opportunity to make a difference – today and not tomorrow. In Cut Poison Burn, you'll glean an insider's view of America's so-called 'War on Cancer' and the cancer industry while meeting its various players: The federal government who, despite claiming they will "leave no stone unturned" to fight the nasty enemy, instead spends its precious time and resources persecuting innocent innovators whom they consider "quacks" The drug companies threatened by alternative cancer treatments that can't be patented or produce sufficient profits The powerful "non-profit" organizations that clearly have their eye on the money instead of cancer victims' best interests If you doubt that it's all about the money, consider this intriguing fact… According to the documentary, ONE cancer patient, from diagnosis to death is typically worth a whopping $350,000 and in some cases, over a million dollars, to the lucrative cancer industry. Can you imagine a more perfect setup for Big Business? "Why Are We Losing the War on Cancer?" Despite over $2.7 trillion spent on research and treatment, 14,800,000 Americans have died from cancer since 1971. In 2009 alone, 565,000 – or 1,548 people every day – lost their lives to the dreaded disease. And in the next 3 years, more individuals will die from cancer than ALL the U.S. soldier deaths from EVERY war since the American Revolution. What's going on? We weren't supposed to lose. In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared the 'War on Cancer'. And with that declaration, the American Cancer Program officially launched. With an initial appointment of $1.6 billion for the first 3 years alone, the program shouldn't have failed – but it has. And miserably at that. Perhaps Charles B. Simone, M.MS., M.D., Founder of the Simone Protective Cancer Center sums up this dismal failure best: "Little or no progress in the treatment of adult cancers has been made. A man or woman who gets prostate or breast cancer today will live as long as the person who developed these same cancers in 1920. Nothing we've done in a century has substantially reduced deaths." Dr. Simone agrees that certain cancers have been helped – lymphomas, childhood leukemia, Hodgkin's, and the type of testicular cancer that afflicted Lance Armstrong. But the more common cancers affecting average citizens – colon, breast, prostate, and lung – have not been aided by the War on Cancer's conventional treatments. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Burzynski's Groundbreaking, Yet Forbidden Treatment The Navarro's journey took them to the steps of the Burzynski Research Institute in Houston, Texas, founded by the renowned Stanislaw R. Burzynski, M.D., Ph.D. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The American Cancer Society: For the People… or for Corporate America? "Who does the American Cancer Society represent? The answer with all non-profits is defined by where their financial support comes from." - Jonathan Emord, Constitutional Lawyer The American Cancer Society (ACS) is one the world's wealthiest non-profit organizations with total assets of $2,317,471,000. You may be wondering… if it's non-profit, where does it get its generous funding? According to the documentary, the answer lies in a long history of partnerships with deep-pocketed corporations, including Big Tobacco. Here's an example of one of their mutually-benefiting, "revolving door" relationships… The first director of the ACS, Clarence Cook Little, resigned in 1954 to become the Scientific Director of the Tobacco Industry Research Council. At the time, there were ACS board members working "hand-in-glove" with tobacco industry advertising firms, who were, in essence, running the American Cancer Society's advertising. This tradition continues today. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dare to Discover the Truth… Cut Poison Burn Uncovers it All ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Big Idea: Treating Cancer with Immunotherapy

02:47
Cancer specialists have discovered a new way to activate the body's immune system. Immunotherapy may finally be the weapon needed to conquer one of medicines' fiercest foes. Doctors diagnosed sarcoma in Sudhakar Iyer it is a rare and deadly soft-tissue cancer. He endured debilitating rounds of standard cancer treatment known as chemotherapy. It put his cancer in remission but left him weak. Then the cancer returned. This time it spread to his lungs. Iyer qualified to take part in a clinical trial run by Dr. Gary Schwartz, chief of hematology and oncology at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. He used a promising new treatment known as immunotherapy. Administered by an IV, the patient takes a drug that activates normally dormant T-cells. A T-cell is a type of white blood cell essential to the immune system. In just a few months, immunotherapy seemed to be working for Iyer. The tumor on his lung went away. Dr. Schwartz said doctors are seeing response rates that are extraordinary and unparalleled survivals. In 2016, more than 1.5 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with some form of cancer and nearly 600,000 people will die of it, according to the American Cancer Society. During immunotherapy, doctors administer drugs that will actually boost your immune system, training your own body to fight the cancer. Unlike chemotherapy, there are virtually no side effects. --SHARON CROWLEY

Breast Cancer Intra-Operative Radiation (IORT):

07:46
We teach you about intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) for early stage breast cancer. This one-time dose of accelerated partial breast radiation is an option in some with early stage breast cancer. VISIT THE BREAST CANCER SCHOOL FOR PATIENTS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org LIST OF QUESTIONS FOR YOUR DOCTORS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org/breast-health-updates-latest-videos/ FOLLOW US: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Breast-Cancer-School-for-Patients-958519147618444/ ________________________________________________________________ Questions for your Breast Surgeon and Radiation Oncologist: 1. Am I a candidate for IORT? 2. Would you recommend I consider IORT? 3. What are the advantages of IORT compared to standard radiation? 4. What are the disadvantages of IORT? 5. What is intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT)? Intraoperative Radiation Therapy is an evolving technique of radiation therapy for women having a lumpectomy for favorable, early stage breast cancer. “Whole Breast Radiation” is still considered the standard of care. IORT is slowly becoming more available at hospitals across the country. It is appropriate for only a small proportion of patients with small breast cancers. Also known as a type of Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI), IORT is a technique of delivering a one-time dose of radiation to the lumpectomy area during surgery versus whole breast radiation – a treatment that takes usually four to six weeks. IORT is still an investigational therapy and not yet incorporated into national breast cancer guidelines. When a lumpectomy is performed for breast cancer, radiation is usually recommended to reduce the chance of cancer re-growing in the lumpectomy area of the breast. IORT applies a single dose of radiation to the operative lumpectomy site while under anesthesia in the operating room. Only women who meet the strict criteria for IORT should consider this mode of radiation. What are the general criteria to have IORT? This therapy may be an option for women older than 45, a “favorable” tumor smaller than 2.5 cm, and no evidence of cancer in the lymph nodes. There are other, specific criteria that can exclude eligibility. The decision to consider IORT must be made with your breast surgeon and radiation oncologist before surgery. It takes a great deal of coordination with your surgeon, radiation oncologist, and hospital to be prepared to perform IORT during your lumpectomy surgery. Most hospital facilities currently do not offer this form of breast cancer radiation. What are the Advantages of IORT? The most attractive aspect of IORT is completing a surgical lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy, and radiation therapy in one day. If successful, you can avoid the 4 to 6 weeks of daily trips to your radiation center to receive whole breast radiation. Another advantage is that IORT applies the radiation to only the site of the surgery, where cancer cells could be unknowingly left behind and grow again in the future. Whole breast radiation is applied to the entire breast and could affect other healthy tissue. As a result, IORT can focus radiation just on the area of the lumpectomy site. Review our lesson on “Brachytherapy” to learn more about shorter course radiation options. What are the disadvantages of IORT? IORT is a new technology, so the long-term success rate for keeping cancer from returning in the breast is still uncertain with this technique. As a result, whole breast radiation is still considered the standard of care to reduce “local recurrence” of cancer in the breast after a lumpectomy. The “Targit-A” and “ELIOT” clinical trials did show statistically higher recurrence rates at 5 years for IORT when compared to whole breast radiation in highly selected patients. The NCCN (see below link) has yet to add IORT to their treatment guidelines. Other studies are in progress to study IORT’s effectiveness. We currently are awaiting studies to see if IORT is effective at 10 years which is the benchmark for success in the field of radiation therapy. Patient-Friendly References: breast360.org An excellent detailed overview of IORT is located (here). This site is created for patients by the American Society of Breast Surgeons. cancer.org This page (here) has a general outline of breast radiation. It mentions IORT briefly as an option. Being Called Back After a Mammogram

01:48
The gold standard in breast cancer screening, mammography offers an x-ray view of the breast. The American Cancer Society recommends women start getting them at age 40, and every year thereafter. "The reason that we do it every year is that we're looking for subtle changes in the pattern over time. So if something begins to become distorted or a mass shows up or calcifications that are suspicious show up, those are the things that we're looking for," says Dr. Gail Santucci, diagnostic radiologist with Lee Memorial Health System. Certain breast tissue is easy to read, others make it more difficult. "She's our favorite candidate for screening because she has very small tissue. Tumors would show up very easily in a patient like this," says Dr. Santucci. The denser the breast, the harder it is to spot minor variations. Doctors are looking at two images of each breast. At least eight to ten percent of patients are called back to take more pictures. "With those four views we are taking of the breasts, we aren't looking up close at particular areas, we are kind of getting an overview and look for anything that triggers us to look closer," says Dr. Santucci. In itself, it doesn't mean the test was 'positive'. "It could be that the tissue overlaps funny on the mammogram pictures and it looks like it could be distorted by a mass, when in fact it's just normal tissue. It could be that we see a mass on the mammogram and we're not sure if it's a cyst or if it's solid," says Dr. Santucci. One to two percent of patients will undergo a biopsy. Only a half a percent end up having breast cancer. So getting a call back after a mammogram is no reason to hit the panic button. "I think that's one of the most misunderstood portions of mammography. People become very concerned when they get a call," says Dr. Santucci. Reimagining Cancer Care: Beyond #Moonshot: Back-to-Basics Cancer Care Otis Brawley, MD, MACP | Chief Medical Officer, American Cancer Society, Inc. The underbelly of health care is hard to look at. But Otis Brawley, an oncologist who grew up in inner-city Detroit, worked in the largest public hospital in the U.S. and is now a leader at the American Cancer Society, has seen it all: how the rich are over-treated and the poor are under-treated, patient care based on how big a payment the doctor can expect, rising health care costs for unnecessary and unproven treatments. Brawley says rational health care, drawn from results-based, scientifically justifiable treatments, should be the norm, not the exception. What will it take to get us there? Using his personal experiences and deep understanding of today’s health care system, Brawley answers that big question. Join us in 2017: http://www.qualitytalks.org

Thomas Seyfried, PhD-Boston College Biology Department-Metabolic Therapy A Toxic-Free and Potenti...

39:59
According to the American Cancer Society, over 1,600 people in the United States die from cancer every day, many of whom were receiving the current standard of care, which is radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of both. Thomas Seyfried is a professor in the biology department at Boston College and strong proponent of using metabolic therapy as a form of treatment for every type of cancer, arguing that it’s more effective and less toxic than radiation and chemotherapy.  So, what exactly does metabolic therapy entail? It’s based on a simple concept: growth requires fuel, so in order to stop the growth of cancer cells, their sources of fuel--namely glucose and glutamine--must be reduced or eliminated. Reducing the availability of glucose and glutamine results in an increase in ketones, which can be effectively used by the body’s normal cells but not by cancer cells. Seyfried explains how the primary difference between cancer cells and normal cells makes this an effective form of treatment for cancer, discusses how to achieve a state of therapeutic ketosis, and describes what to do once a state of therapeutic ketosis has been achieved. He also explains what’s standing in the way of widespread implementation of metabolic therapy in modern medicine, and the main problem with the gene theory of cancer and personalized targeted therapy for cancer. “The whole paradigm has to change, the whole concept of what people view cancer as has to change before we understand how much more effectively we can build therapies that don’t harm anybody,” says Seyfried. Tune in for the full conversation, and check out his book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer.

How Is Liver Cancer Staged?

21:49
http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/glytamins.html According to the American Cancer Society, "The stage of cancer is a description of how widespread it is. The stage of a liver cancer is one of the most important factors in considering treatment options. A staging system is a standard way for the cancer care team to sum up information about how far a cancer has spread. Doctors use staging systems to get an idea about a patient's prognosis (outlook) and to help determine the most appropriate treatment. There are several staging systems for liver cancer, and not all doctors use the same system." Liver biopsy as well as imaging studies help in classifying liver cancers as per the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM system, the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system, the Cancer of the Liver Italian Program (CLIP) system, or the Okuda system. http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/store http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/store/glytamins.html

Breast Cancer | Dr. Tony Talebi discusses "Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer".

Dr. Tony Talebi discusses Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer with Dr. Lippman. For further discussion please visit http://www.HemOnc101.com Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in the US. Important risk factors for breast cancer are age, gender, reproductive history, hormonal factors, and family history. Although a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer is common in patients diagnosed with breast cancer, less than ten percent of all breast cancers are associated with genetic mutations. Assay of hormone receptors (estrogen [ER] and progesterone [PR] receptors) is an important component of the pathologic evaluation of breast cancer, for both prognostic and predictive purposes, as patients with hormone receptor-positive tumors benefit from the addition of endocrine treatments. The treatment of early stage breast cancer includes the treatment of locoregional disease with surgery, radiation therapy, or both, and the treatment of systemic disease with one or a combination of chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, or biologic therapy. Here, Dr. Tony Talebi discusses the general concepts of what is estrogen receptor positive breast cancer with world renowned breast cancer expert Dr. Marc Lippman, professor and chairman of the department of medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Marc Lippman pioneered the use of tamoxifen in estrogen receptor positive breast cancer with his early research while at the National Cancer Institute which revolutionized the treatment of breast cancer. The discussion includes symptoms, diagnosis, staging, genetic implications, surgery, radiation therapy, Oncotype DX testing, hormonal therapy including tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors and chemotherapy for breast cancer. Communicating Radiation Treatment to Patients for University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center

03:00
38.4% of people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes (Cancer.gov, May 2018), and nearly 66% of U.S. cancer patients will receive radiation therapy (American Society for Radiation Oncology, 2015 Legislative Priorities Brief). External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) is one of the most frequently used radiation treatments, yet the process is opaque and complex. Providing understandable educational material to help anxious patients and caregivers navigate the process is vital; current patient education material is voluminous and overwhelming. Typically written at a 12th grade reading level, with occasional stock photographs, explanation of the treatment is handed to patients in their first meeting with their doctor, a point of high emotional stress. In a project funded by UChicago Medicine’s Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence, an IIT Institute of Design (ID) student team partnered with Dr. Daniel Golden of UChicago Medicine to explore how visual narratives could better educate patients about radiation therapy. • By surveying existing visual narrative styles, along with theoretical teachings from Scott McCloud, a renowned comic theorist, the team explored visual narratives, more popularly known as ‘graphic novels’ or ‘comics’, as legitimate emerging media for serious topics, in healthcare, mental illness, death, abortion, abuse, and cancer survivorship. The class learned that graphic storytelling is its own visual language that can be leveraged to display concepts such as time passage, transitions, simultaneity and projection. • They also researched how, as healthcare delivery adopts patient-focused care, principles for public-facing communication have emerged. However, many guidelines are focused on primarily text-based materials. • The team interviewed 26 stakeholders: patients/caregivers and medical and non-medical staff. They analyzed audio files and transcripts, extracted insights, distilled them into design principles, ultimately creating a goal-oriented framework that streamlined the process and ensured that decisions for content representation were sound and principle-driven. Research yielded design principles reflected in the design of a multicolor illustration-based discussion guide prototype. In easy-to-follow framing using 5th grade reading level language and simple graphic narrative-style illustrations, the team’s prototype distills what had been dozens of loose pages into one two-sided takeaway document designed to support clear communication and expectation-setting between doctor and patient. Dr. Golden is now testing the prototype with patients. He will present “COMMUNICATING THE EXTERNAL BEAM RADIATION EXPERIENCE (CEBRE): A NOVEL GRAPHIC NARRATIVE PATIENT EDUCATION TOOL” (for which the ID students are listed as co-authors) to fellow radiation oncologists at two North American forums this year in order to disseminate the approach, receive feedback for future iterations, and instantiate it as standard practice. Patients have reported that the tool has made a stressful interaction easier, helps them to understand how external beam radiation works, and sets expectations for the process. In 2018, an estimated 1,735,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. (Cancer.gov, May 2018). Given that external beam radiation is one of the most common treatments, this work could improve the experience of hundreds of thousands of cancer patients annually.
