It should come as no surprise that in the same way we inherit many family traits, the risk of cancer may also pass from generation to generation. “So if we can identify any genetic mutation that we can use later on for therapy, it would be hugely beneficial,” says Dr. Samith Sandadi, who is a gynecologic oncologist on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. Doctors have long understood there was a genetic link to many cancers - including colorectal, breast, ovarian and uterine. But only recently tests were developed to look at the DNA fingerprints. The most well known screening involves the BRCA gene mutation. “It gives you a better overall picture of your risk of getting not only breast cancer, but gynecologic cancers,” says Dr. Sandadi. Looking into the genetics of cancer is not a far-fetched idea. The technology is available locally and more people are taking advantage. Mary Ann Orlang is a genetic counselor with Lee Memorial Health System’s Regional Cancer Center. “What I do is talk to women, men, who think they might be at risk for cancer, or they have already been diagnosed with cancer. We do a family tree and determine a criterion for genetic testing,” says Orlang. Tests involve either a blood or saliva sample. The cancer center screens for a handful of genetically-linked diseases including BRCA and Lynch syndrome, along with rare mutations that may lead to cancer. “We’ve learned so much more about the genetic link so we’re able to provide testing for people at risk,” says Orlang. Getting a read on risk can help doctors specialize treatment, or provide patients a chance to closely monitor or take preventative steps. “By employing these screening tests early and by counseling them on risk-reducing strategies, we can decrease the incidence of ovarian cancer,” says Dr. Sandadi. An inherited predisposition for cancer is information that can and should be passed down the family tree. This time the anticipation couldn't have been higher since both teams were equipped with a 2012 McDonald's All-American and it could potentially be the last time they faced each other in high school. Miller Grove's Tony Parker and SW Dekalb's Shaq Goodwin are two bigs who use their power to wear down defenders and this was a joy to watch them clash.

This is a PSA I did Summer of 2007 for the Cancer Society. As usual, I am playing myself. My family back home in Texas has chastised me heatedly for supporting vegitarianism. They keep saying, "Think of all those poor little cows being wasted because you choose to eat celery." I am truly, truly sorry.

MESA, Arizona - Good old father's advice and simple foods are credited with helping a Valley man reach a milestone birthday. "Eat properly and get your rest," recommends Bernando LaPallo. Words to live by considering the Mesa resident was born in Brazil in 1901 and has lived to be 110 years old. "They had no automobiles, no airplanes I saw them all come about," remembered LaPallo. LaPallo claims he's never been sick a day in his life. He walks every morning and eats mostly organic fruits and veggies. "People ask me what do you do to stay so young," LaPallo explained. "I say, 'Well you've heard the old saying, you are what you eat.'" So what's LaPallo's secret? Five foods: garlic, honey, cinnamon, chocolate and olive oil. "Use olive oil on your skin," LaPallo said. "Rub your feet rub your arms you'll never rust." Healthy habits LaPallo picked up from his father, a doctor, who lived to be 98. Full story at ABC 15 http://www.abc15.com/news/region-southeast-valley/mesa/valley-man-turns-110-years-old-and-said-5-foods-helped-him-live-long-life "He told me not to eat ordinary red meat," expressed LaPallo. "He said lamb is okay but red meat, stay away from it. Hot dogs, french fries and all those things don't eat it." LaPallo keeps his brain sharp by being a voracious reader, solving crossword puzzles and playing checkers. "I can remember things my father told me when I was 8 years old," LaPallo recalled. A father who showed his son how to have a rich life worth living. "And he taught me how to live, how to eat and to have faith in God and he would take care of me," smiled LaPallo. "And so far it has happened."

Governor Nathan Deal appeared at the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport Wednesday for a helicopter ride across Albany, getting a first hand look at the devastation left behind by a deadly tornado. Deal said that Albany and south Georgia were not being overlooked this time, and that he he is trying to get as much help here as possible. Governor Deal was joined by Congressman Sanford Bishop as they flew in a helicopter over this area and other tornado damaged parts of Dougherty County. The governor described what he saw as 'A complete disaster.' The EF-3 tornado struck Sunday afternoon, and killed four people in Albany. Another tornado that began an EF-2 and grew to an EF-3, killed 11 others in other south Georgia counties. Adel was the hardest hit. Seven people died there. "From the air, as I was today, it is very clear to see the path that the tornado traveled a very devastating path. Pretty much everything that was in its path was either leveled or severely damaged," Deal explained. "A number of industries were hit. Those people won't be able to go to work. There's assistance for them. There will be housing assistance made available," said Congressman Bishop. Bishop said he knows people are tired and frustrated after two storms in January devastated the community. And he said that even though the federal government moves slowly, he is confident federal aid is coming. "I am frustrated, and we had a moment of silence Monday in Washington. And in my remarks what I said was, 'We look forward to collaborating with all of the partners that will provide help. And we want to get it soon. As soon as possible,'" Bishop said. Bishop said the presidential transition may have slowed the aid process last week, but he is working to get it back on track now. The governor said the state has as much help here now for this step of the recovery effort. Deal said there was 776 state workers taking part in the tornado recovery efforts on Wednesday, 322 of them were in Dougherty County alone. He said there are also thousands of volunteers in South Georgia working as well. But he said that even with all the help from all sources he knew, it is going to be a long cleanup from the deadly storms that blew through Sunday. Dougherty County leaders said the governor is doing all he can, but storm victims need that help now. "Well I don't know that they feel any comfort until the help is actually here, and delivered. And there is nothing else that our elected officials can do. We need the bureaucracy that is FEMA to actually move this process forward," Dougherty County Commission Chaiman Chris Cohilas explained. While Deal was visiting the area, he tweeted that the first FEMA request had been approved, including individual assistance for Dougherty County after the January 2nd storms. He also tweeted that he spoke with President Trump to thank him for approval and said that Trump is committed to expediting the second request for the January 22nd tornadoes. The governor also made a stop in Adel to tour the damage there, another hard hit area in Southwest Georgia. Governor Deal drove through some of the hardest hit areas. He took a look at Sunshine Acres and then went to Val Del Rd and spoke with the Bullard family, who lost everything. He also said everyone in Cook County has been accounted for. Deal got emotional at the end of the press conference, and said that the ability for South Georgians to come together is crucial. “You find out how important it is to have communities like this, who have neighbors who are helping neighbors,” said Deal. Other community leaders joined Deal in expressing their appreciation of all those working to restore normalcy. “If you want to talk about the heartbeat of America, go to Adel Grocery Company," said Congressman Austin Scott. "Talk to those volunteers down there, you’ll find people who lost their own homes, who are in there helping other people.” The governor expects more assistance to be given to all areas in Southwest Georgia, and he thinks that will happen quickly. Anybody who has damage from the January 2 storm and needs FEMA assistance, can talk to a real person with FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 or register online at DisasterAssistance.gov. Copyright 2017 WALB. MONETA, VIRGINIA — The suspect who shot and killed two journalists during a live broadcast in Southwest Virginia died Wednesday afternoon at a hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The on-air shooting of two WDBJ-TV journalists, Alison Parker and Adam Ward took place at about 6:45 a.m. at Bridgewater Plaza. A female interviewee was wounded and was in stable condition, Reuters reported. The suspect, Vester L. Flanagan II sent ABC News a 23-page fax about two hours after the shooting, claiming his attack was triggered by the June 17 mass shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, according to Reuters. Flanagan allegedly told ABC News that he had suffered racial discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying at work. Authorities located Flanagan's car, a 2009 Mustang at the Roanoke Regional Airport at 11 a.m. However, Flanagan fled the airport in a Chevrolet Sonic that he rented earlier in the month, according to the Washington Post. A Virginia State Police trooper using a license plate reader spotted Flanagan's car at about 11:20 a.m. and immediately called for backup and tried to make a traffic stop. Flanagan refused to stop and sped away before running off the road and struck an embankment on Interstate 66. Officers approached the car and found Flanagan had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. For further information visit http://www.HemOnc101.com Dr. Talebi's practice, Miami Hematology and Oncology Associates is located at 151 NW 11th street, Suite W303. Homestead, Fl 33030. Tel 786-504-3084 Hodgkin lymphoma Hodgkin lymphoma accounts for approximately 10 percent of all lymphomas and approximately 0.6 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the developed world annually. This amounts to approximately 8830 new cases and about 1300 deaths due to HL in the United States annually. The majority of patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma present with painless localized enlarged lymph nodes, typically involving the cervical (neck) region. Hodgkin lymphoma arises from germinal center or post-germinal center B cells in the lymph nodes. Hodgkin lymphoma has a unique cellular composition, containing a minority of neoplastic cells (Reed-Sternberg cells and their variants) in an inflammatory background. It is separated from the other B cell lymphomas based on its unique clinicopathologic features, and can be divided into two major sub-groups, based on the appearance and immunophenotype of the tumor cells. The diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma is made by the evaluation of involved tissue, usually a lymph node biopsy. Excisional biopsies are preferred and large core needle biopsies may be adequate in select cases. Here, Dr. Tony Talebi discusses the general concepts of Hodgkin lymphoma with Dr. Ann Morhbacher, associate professor of medicine at the University of Southern California and a "top US doctor" as per US world news and world report magazine. One of our favorites from Patsy and Bubba Brown, great Texas songwriters and performers - VISIT http://www.patsyandbubbabrown.com/ Patsy and Bubba Brown with Johnny Santos (harmonica) and Clay Meyers (percussion) Live at Canyon Lake, Lake-a-palooza! Norman and Jennifer's place with Trace Relations Trio and Katherine Dawn, June 2012 About the Artist: Patsy Coleman Brown, David "Bubba" Brown Patsy Brown - San Antonio born. Started singing in school, did all the talent shows etc. 1st experience singing with a band was with Bobby Martin and the Rhythm Mustangs at Castle Hills Town Lounge in SA. Lee Harmon had just come back to SA after touring with among others George Jones. He opened a club at Blanco and Fulton in SA. He called it The Junction and it was just that. He formed a house band with Gene Jacoby on bass Bud Treadwell on steel and Rudy Gray on drums(he went on to play with Charlie Pride for years). The Harmonaires backed up acts like Merle Haggard, Faron Young and Charlie Pride. When musicians were in town they would come out and sit in and hang out, this club was always packed and gave me the opportunity to mingle with some of the best. It was during this time I met David Zetner who then was working with Willie. The band was getting ready to go out and tour. They asked me to go and I jumped at the chance. We played across the country in places like Salt Lake City Utah on a show with Merle Haggards' band. In California we played in LA and had Roger Miller sit in. That night we wound up at Rogers house playing and partying. It was a great time for all of us. The tour took us across the US all the way to Great Falls Montana. We traveled in an old Flex bus. The band was made up of Jimmy Day on steel, David Zettner on bass, and Paul English on Drums. Johnny Bush also played drums and fronted the band, I would open for Willie. It was an experience to remember. At the end of the tour they took me to Nashville and I recorded a Shirley Nelson song and a Jerry Blanton song. After returning I worked with George Chambers and the Country Gentlemen and recorded Yesterdays Memories, written by Jerry Blanton at Joey Lopez's Zazz studio. I worked my 1st Willie Nelson Picnic with George's band. This record charted and got a regional pick. I worked the River Festival and many KKYX shows. During this time I met Bubba Brown and we formed Beaver Creek Band. That year we played the River Festival with then members Bobby Jenkins, and John Santos. Bubba Brown - San Antonio born. Started playing drums at 14, 1st professional job was with the Bobby Stone and Westernaires. Also played with The People and then on the road with The Visions of Light with Lord August (Augie Meyers). While in the service in El Paso-Fort Bliss, played for Jimmy Dalton & The Appollos. After discharge moved to Houston, signed with International Artist, to do an LP with a newly formed band Ice, including Stacy Sutherland of the 13 th Floor Elevators. Back in San Antonio recorded "Sunnyside of My Life", an original song which was later covered by Roger Miller. Recorded an LP with Denny Ezba, produced by Heuy Meaux. Wrote the song "Memories" and later recorded it in Austin. It was played in the movie "Paper Hearts" with Kris Kristofferson and James Brolin. Memories was also recorded by Augie Meyers and the Western Headband along with two more originals "You're the One" and "Dusty Roads". Made a couple of tours with the Willie Nelson Band . Went back to playing guitar and formed Beaver Creek Band with Patsy Coleman.
