What US state is the best? People talk about the United States a lot. It’s a major world leader with the largest economy on the planet and the highest immigration rate in the world. It must be a great place to live, but like any country, it’s not the best at everything. We’re gonna look at what each state in the US is the best and worst at! TIMESTAMPS: New England 1:15 The Mid-Atlantic region 3:01 The South 4:31 Florida 6:06 The Midwest 8:24 Konsas 9:08 The Southwestern region 11:41 New Mexico 12:40 The westernmost region 13:00 #usastates #newyork #usafacts Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - Maine is the most well-behaved state, with the lowest rate of violent crime in the entire country. - Vermont is the best at gender equality when it comes to employment and income rates. - Connecticut’s residents have the cleanest teeth! Statistically speaking, they’re the most responsible about visiting the dentist regularly. - New York not only has the most densely populated city in America, it’s also the homestate of the most presidents (7) and vice presidents (11). - New Jersey, despite being the butt of so many jokes, has the lowest suicide rate in the country. - Maryland has the best household income rates in the country at an average of $80,000 per year. - Virginia has the lowest asthma rate in the US. That must mean they have the cleanest air, right? Wrong! - West Virginia is the most equal state regarding education, race, and income level. However, only 19% of the population goes on to get a college degree. - Florida: great for vacationing, not so much for living! It’s got the most popular amusement park in not just the country but the whole world: Universal Orlando Resort. - Alabama is the best at college football: their universities have racked up 16 national championship victories. - Louisiana is famous for New Orleans and for the Port of South Louisiana. It’s the largest in the nation, overseeing 60% of the country’s grain exports. - Tennessee has the highest number of caves in the country, so if you’ve ever wanted to go spelunking, get a group together and head on over! But be careful not to hurt your mouth on your expeditions! - Kentucky’s another great place for exploring caves; they’ve got the longest cave system in the entire world! If you’re interested in checking it out, it’s Mammoth Cave National Park. - Kansas is the largest producer of wheat in the nation. Maybe all those endless flat wheat fields have something to do with the fact that this state is also ranked as having the ugliest natural scenery in the US. - North Dakota boasts the highest quality of life in America and the fastest growing economy. - Indiana is the best at high school basketball, but also has more meth labs than any other state. - Texas is the biggest state in the continental US, and as such produces the most energy and has the highest migration rate: over 1,000 people move to Texas each day. - Nevada makes more tax money from gambling than any other state in the country and has the highest rated nightlife. Olson, Perry Show There Are no Limits to Bison Toughness By: Jeff Kolpack, INFORUM Fargo - There was something about No. 34 leading the Bison players out of the locker room and into the darkened Fargodome on Friday night that makes you wonder about the limits of mental toughness. Like, there aren't any limits with these North Dakota State players. Linebacker Grant Olson returned to the lineup despite a torn ACL. Last year, he played in the FCS national title game with a painful appendicitis problem. He'll get to play in pain again this year because the Bison are heading back to Texas, partner. The 52-14 win over New Hampshire at Gate City Bank Field in the FCS semifinals before 18,694 maniacs that make college football the passionate game that it is sends the Bison to the FCS title game in Frisco on Jan. 4. For the third straight year, the stadium is named something else -- Toyota Stadium now -- but the throng of NDSU cowboys and cowgirls will be there again. Olson was in for a few plays, but the fact he put on pads at all was a minor miracle. The big play of the night, however, was turned in by another senior who battled his share of ACL problems. Defensive tackle Leevon Perry, who spent all offseason rehabbing his injury, started the plane to Frisco with a 6-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The 6-foot-4, 281-pounder showed the wheels of the running back he once was at Saint Agnes High School in the Twin Cities. Well, he was mostly a defensive end but got to carry the ball on occasion. "I think I scored about the same number of touchdowns," he said. "It was a good time." So you thought you had a good day Friday at work? Perry graduated earlier in the day and then went out and played one of his best games of the season. "That's a full day in my book," he said, before talking about teammate Cole Jirik sitting with him at the postgame news conference. "Me and Cole have known each other for a long, long time. It's nice we graduated together. It was a little emotional today. It's nice to be done with school and have the opportunity to put three rings on the fingers." Perry's touchdown made it 24-7 and calmed the nerves of thousands after a shaky start. When New Hampshire's Steven Thames picked off Brock Jensen's second pass of the game and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown, psychiatrists in the Fargo-Moorhead area were put on red alert. Their beepers went off when usually sure-handed running back Sam Ojuri fumbled two plays later and the Wildcats had the ball at the Bison 29-yard line. It was about a perfect start as the Wildcats could have hoped for. It had the makings of this NDSU team going the way of the 1998 Green Bay Packers as a heavily favored playoff team to go down in upset flames. In the words of former Vikings head coach Mike Tice, "OK, calm down." With 24 seniors and a veteran coaching staff, that's exactly what happened. The defense held New Hampshire on a fourth-and-5 after the fumble. Wildcats head coach Sean McDonnell opted against the 41-yard field goal, saying he need more than field goals. "We needed 7s today," he said. "Fourteen wasn't going to be enough. Ten wasn't going to be enough. We knew we had to score points." Jensen's 50-yard bomb to Zach Vraa tied it at 7-7, and the Bison had their train back on tracks. "I'm not going to say panic, but you never want start a game off like that," said Bison running back John Crockett. "We knew it was time for us to get it going." They got it going ... all the way to Frisco, again.

Minot came into existence in 1886, when James J. Hill's Great Northern Railway ended its push through the state for the winter, after having difficulty constructing a trestle across Gassman Coulee. It was the end of the railway's line, so whenever a train came into the town and the stop was announced, the conductor would call out "Minot, this is Minot, North Dakota, prepare to meet your doom". A tent town sprang up overnight, as if by "magic", thus the city came to be known as the Magic City, and in the next five months, the population increased to over 5,000 residents, further adding to the nickname's validity. The town site was chosen by the railroad to be placed on the land of then-homesteader Erik Ramstad. Ramstad was convinced to relinquish his claim, and became one of the city leaders. The town was named after Henry D. Minot, a railroad investor, an ornithologist and friend of Hill. Its Arikara name is niwaharít sahaáhkat [niWAharít sAhaáhkAt, niWAharít shaáhkAt]; its Hidatsa name is dibiarugareesh, ("Plum Coulee"). The city was incorporated on June 28, 1887. The Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (Soo Line) later built a line from Valley City up to Canada. While initially their plan was to cross the Souris River at Burlington, local interests and arguments convinced them otherwise; landholders along the new route donated the right-of-way. They reached Minot in 1893. Minot and its surrounding area were wide open throughout 1905-20. Population grew rapidly due to railroad construction and availability of unclaimed land. Nearly complete court records of Ward County and Minot document the prevalence and different types of criminal activity, and offer strong support for the dubious title of "crime capitol of North Dakota." State attorney general William Langer helped clean up the town in 1917-1920, but by the time Prohibition had arrived in the 1920s the city had become a center of illegal activities associated with the High Third district, which were exacerbated due to the city being a supply hub of Al Capone's liquor smuggling operations. The hotbed of alcohol bootlegging, prostitution, and opium dens that sprang up in the Downtown area soon led people to give Minot the nickname "Little Chicago." The Smugglers used a network of underground tunnels (some of which were previously built for heating or deliveries) to transport and conceal the illicit cargo entering from Canada.

OGDEN, Utah -- Heartbreak has followed Weber State in March the past few seasons. The Wildcats reached the Big Sky tournament championship game three times in the past four seasons, falling short each time. Two of those title game losses came with NBA All-Star Damian Lillard at the helm. With Lillard in the house, Weber State finally snapped its championship game hex in dominant fashion. Kyle Tresnak scored 27 points and Davion Berry added 19 to help the Wildcats beat North Dakota 88-67 Saturday night for the Big Sky tournament championship and an automatic NCAA berth. Joel Bolomboy added 11 rebounds for Weber State (19-11, 14-6 Big Sky), which earned its first NCAA tournament spot since 2007. "I've been waiting four years for this," Tresnak said. Troy Huff had 17 points and Alonzo Traylor added 15 to lead North Dakota(17-16, 12-8 Big Sky) which trailed from start to finish. UND has lost all six meetings in its series with Weber State. North Dakota shot just 39.3 percent from the field and trailed by double digits almost the entire second half. The Wildcats had no trouble finding their shot. Weber State shot 56.6 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the perimeter. "Against these guys, you got to pick your poison," North Dakota coach Brian Jones said. "They're good inside. They're good outside." Weber State opened the game by hitting 10 of its first 11 shots from the field. It forced North Dakota to play from behind the entire first half. Strong outside shooting made the difference. The Wildcats shot 53.8 percent from the perimeter in the first half. Weber State scored on each of its first seven possessions to take an 18-6 lead over North Dakota. Berry had a big hand in the hot start. He drove for a layup, made a 3-pointer and hit a pair of free throws to help push Weber State's lead to double digits. "Our guys came out with great confidence," Weber State coach Randy Rahe said. "We got great looks to start off with and then it's kind of a roller coaster. When the first couple of guys make shots, everybody else just feels like, `Hey, it's our night. We're going to make shots all night." UND struggled to hang close to the Wildcats. North Dakota made four baskets in its next five possessions -- culminating in a jumper from Traylor -- to cut the lead to 21-14. But Tresnak responded with three straight baskets in the paint to stop the run and boost the Wildcats to a 27-16 lead with 10:49 left before halftime. Weber State built its largest first-half lead when Berry hit a pair of free throws to put the Wildcats ahead 36-23 with 5:03 remaining. UND cut the deficit to seven points three times in the final five minutes, but Berry made a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Wildcats a 44-34 halftime lead. "I got the ball and then I basically had to just cool off for a bit because there were 9 seconds left," Berry said. "I just wanted to take my time and get a good look. I came down, I took a rhythm dribble and I just let it go." Slowing down Weber State did not get any easier for North Dakota in the second half. UND cut its deficit to nine at one point when Quinton Hooker hit a pair of free throws to make it 54-45. Starting with a layup from Berry, the Wildcats had three straight baskets to seize momentum again. They went up 65-49 on a putback from Bolomboy with 11:34 remaining. Weber State pushed its lead to 20 points when Tresnak drove in for a layup to make it 75-55 with 7:18 left. "They executed their game plan better than we could on the defensive end," UND guard Aaron Anderson said. Copyright by STATS LLC and The Associated Press

01/12/2012 The South Carolina Attorney General's office and State Law Enforcement Division are investigating more than 900 cases of dead people being recorded as voting in the state to see whether there was fraud or clerical errors. SC Attorney General Alan Wilson says, "If there's some discrepancy or some glitch or some mistake, we're going to look at it. And before I start throwing out the idea that there is fraud going on, I want to know. I want facts." The question surfaced in relation to the state's new voter ID law, which requires people voting in person to have a photo ID. Critics of the law say it would hurt thousands of South Carolinians who are registered voters but don't have picture IDs. State DMV director Kevin Shwedo wanted to know how many people could be affected, so he got the voter rolls from the State Election Commission, which show when someone voted last. He then got death records from the state's vital statistics office and the Social Security Administration, to eliminate people who've died. But he found 956 cases of people being recorded as voting after they were dead. "In my opinion, and I'm no expert in this area, dead guys shouldn't be allowed to vote," he says. State Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire says the agency gets regular updates from the state vital statistics office and removes from the rolls voters who have died. He doesn't know why more than 900 dead people show up has having voted, but doesn't think it's necessarily fraud. "We want to know what's going on. We want to get to the bottom of it and figure out if this is going on and, if it is, find out what's happening and stop it." He says it's possible they could be clerical errors. For example, if John Smith, Jr. goes to vote and his name is right below John Smith, Sr., who died recently, a poll worker might accidentally fill in the box for Senior, showing that he voted. "There could be a problem with the data or the way that the data was compared against each other. We just don't know at this point," Whitmire says. Brett Bursey, executive director of the South Carolina Progressive Network, has been fighting the voter ID law since it was introduced. He doesn't believe the 956 "dead voters" data show any fraud. "I know that at the precinct level, if somebody shows up that's dead, the chances are somebody at the poll's going to know that. And so for 900 of this to happen and no one to notice is improbable," he says. The U.S. Department of Justice is blocking the state's voter ID law, saying it would suppress minority voting rights. SC Attorney General Wilson says his office will file a lawsuit against the DOJ within the next few weeks to defend the law. http://LeakSource.wordpress.com

When They Were Kings chronicles the great sports rivalries between North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota in their division II days. The UND/NDSU men's football rivalry raged between 1981 and 2003, and the women's basketball rivalry played out during the 1990s when NDSU combined to win eight out of nine national titles. The producer and writer of the documentary, Prairie Public's Matt Olien, gathered stats and file footage that spanned two decades to compile information about the football rivalry. "NDSU won 12 games in a row from 1981 to 1992, and UND dominated the last decade — winning 10 of the last 13 games," he said. The UND and NDSU women's basketball rivalry was equally intense — the teams combined to win eight of nine national titles between 1991 and 1999. Each year, Olien said, the Bison and Sioux seemed to hook up in crucial games to determine conference, regional and national supremacy. In addition to archival video footage, the documentary is built upon reminiscences and analysis from key players and coaches, including Rocky Hager (NDSU Head Football Coach 1987-96), Roger Thomas (UND Head Football Coach 1986-98), Gene Roebuck (UND Women's Basketball Coach 1987-2012), and Amy Ruley (NDSU Women's Basketball Coach 1979-2008).

Susan Peirez was placed on leave during an investigation. “I work for the governor," she claimed as she was caught on video yelling at a crew member aboard the Delta flight. It turns out the woman who got all sorts of attention for her obnoxious behavior works for the New York State Council on the Arts. Peirez's name and image have been removed from the council's official website.

How much do you know about the U.S.? Were you aware that the Library of Congress could have a record of some of your social media posts? Let’s see which of these 10 little-known facts about the United States will manage to surprise you the most! For example, in fact, there were actually 6 American flags placed on the moon during the Apollo landings. It’s unknown whether all those flags are still standing, but the ones that remain have most likely been bleached completely white, from exposure to radiation from the sun. Or what do you think America’s favorite drink is? Go ahead and guess down in the comments! Tea, coffee, soda, juice? If you think soda, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong since it was the top beverage choice for Americans until recently. Now, its crown has passed to…bottled water! TIMESTAMPS: Out-of-this-world flag 1:05 Americans on the moon 2:03 The greatest of the Great Lakes 2:52 The most visited museums in America 3:49 America’s favorite drink 5:03 The Library of Congress archives 6:05 “Hollywoodland” 7:09 Halloween craze 8:04 The Empire State Building lightning strikes 9:08 The Statue of Liberty 10:05 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - In the U.S., you can see the Star-Spangled Banner waving in the wind at fast food joints, standing tall in people’s yards or attached to their houses, and printed on all kinds of stuff like clothing, pillows, and coffee mugs. - If Armstrong was the first, not many people know that the last man to walk the moon was Apollo 17 Commander Eugene Cernan. - With a surface area of about 31,700 square miles, this lake is about the size of South Carolina! And with a volume of 2,900 cubic miles, Lake Superior is big enough to cover the entirety of North and South America in a foot of water. - Both museums saw around 7 million visitors in 2017, making them tied for the #3 spot on the list of the world’s most visited museums. - In 2016, Americans consumed 88.8 gallons of coffee per capita! So, now you know why your favorite coffee shop is always so crowded! - The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, holding over 167 million items like rare books, manuscripts, photographs, recordings, and plenty of other important and historic materials. - But when it was installed back in 1923, this iconic sign actually read “Hollywoodland” instead of “Hollywood.” It was originally meant to be a real-estate ad for an upscale district that was only supposed to stand for about a year and a half. - According to the National Retail Federation, more than 175 million Americans are estimated to participate in the holiday in 2018 and will spend around $9 billion. - The tallest building in America is the One World Trade Center at 1,776 feet. But for a long time, from 1931 to 1972, it was the 1,250-foot-tall Empire State Building that held this title. - A lesser known fact is that Lady Liberty looked quite different when she first arrived in New York from Paris. When the copper statue was completed and brought to America in 1886, it was more like the color of a penny. By Sue Scheible The Patriot Ledger 'My name is Edna Potts and my 36-year-old daughter had a massive stroke in January of 2006, six days after giving birth. It affected her right side, including her speech, walking and her arm," Potts, who is 59 and lives in Plantsville, Conn., wrote in an e-mail. "She would like to know if any more studies are being done on the robotic arm brace that she may participate in. She is desperate to get her arm back. Out of the whole ordeal, the loss of use of her arm is the most upsetting thing for her. "I am desperate to get her into the program you wrote about. She is so young to have this happen to her. PLEASE!!!" Potts saw an article in The Patriot Ledger about a new robotic arm brace that was clinically tested on five people at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital and was approved in July by the federal Food and Drug Administration. In the short-term trials, the Myomo arm brace showed promise for improving arm strength years after a stroke. Potts' daughter, Rene Hall, was a middle-school teacher with one child, now 11, when she gave birth to her son, now 19 months. Right after the birth, everything seemed fine, and then six days later, Hall had a major stroke. Her high blood pressure during pregnancy was a possible cause. I contacted Theresa Hayes at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital about the e-mail and she called Potts to tell her the hospital plans to make the Myomo arm brace available for more outpatients in the fall. Hayes put Hall on the list of interested patients. The hospital has received a dozen calls from others in New England and South Carolina. For more information, call Hayes at 781-348-2500, Ext. 2107. Maureen Liberty at Myomo Inc., can also help. Myomo is the company that created the robotic arm and it will soon be working with other rehabilitation centers in other states. Call 617-996-9058 and press 1. Myomo may have a hospital closer to Hartford where Hall lives. Potts and her daughter show what great hopes are stirred up by news reports of new scientific developments. For over more than a year, Potts has searched the news media and the Web for anything that might help her daughter. Several months ago, she saw a network TV report of a new neurological implant, but when she called Dr. Philip Kennedy at Neuro Signals in Atlanta, she learned that her daughter wouldn't be a good candidate due to because of her type of stroke. "A stroke changes your life totally," Potts said in an interview. She and her husband, David, live next door to Hall, her husband, Teon,cq and their two children. Potts has a full-time office job and also helps with the child carecq -- two words. "You don't realize how devastating a stroke is -- my daughter can drive, but she can't use her right arm and she can't really talk. She is too young to be left like this for the rest of her life. We are grasping at anything. Compared to a year ago, she can talk better and we are so excited by any possibility for help for her. We follow everything." Potts' e-mail is email@example.com to run LOST STORIES -- Ralph Fergason,cq 59, of Weymouth has a new hobby taping oral histories of interesting South Shore elders. Fergason is an audio/visual/lighting technician at the Boston Marriott Copley Place in Boston. The project started when a longtime member of The First Church in Weymouth died and Fergason audio-taped the funeral. "He was just a very quiet but interesting gentle giant and I wanted some record of his life," Fergason said. The man's widow later told him she didn't remember anything from the funeral because she was so grief-stricken. She and as well as other out-of-state family members who couldn't attend the services were very grateful to have the audio tapes to listen to, he said. Since then, he has gone to the Colonial Adult Day Health Center in Weymouth and interviewed four aged veterans on tape. One worked years ago as a rigger for the USS Constitution and literally "knew all the ropes." Fergason doesn't want elders' stories to be lost to posterity. "When that person dies, their story goes with them," he said. You can e-mail him at firstname.lastname@example.org. CAREGIVER PAY -- A South Shore man in his 50s who takes care of his elderly mother wants to find out if he can qualify as a paid family caregiver under new state programs. The state's enhanced adult family care program is a MassHealth program that has income and asset limits. It pays certain family members for caregiving of a person 60 or older. Spouses and legal guardians cannot be paid, but adult children can qualify. The family caregivers get $49.05 a day for personal care -- about $18,000 a year to provide care that prevents or delays institutional care. The Caring Homes program under the Office of Elder Affairs, is not MassHealth and has higher income limits. Spouses and legal guardians are not eligible as caregivers; adult children are. There is a waiting list. For more information on either, call Christina Gardiner at Old Colony Elderly Services in Brockton at 508-584-1561, Ext. 230. MassHealth Customer Service is 800-841-2900 or TTY 800-497-4648. For Caring Homes info, call 866-797-4222. NEEDS HELP WITH DRUG -- A Halifax woman is frustrated because her Medicare Part D prescription drug plan won't pay for an expensive new medication, Procrit, that her doctor has prescribed for her kidney disease. She is working with Peggy McDonough and Cathy Varnum at the state's SHINE insurance program at HESSCO Elder Services in Sharon. McDonough said many seniors and younger disabled people are finding certain drugs won't be covered under the Medicare D insurance plans they joined. "One man found his copayment for a cancer medication would be $1,500 a month, until he spent $3,850 out of his own pocket," she said. Seniors can appeal an insurer's refusal to pay for a drug. SHINE counselors will call the insurer or the drug company to see if either provide the medicine at less cost. McDonough also refers people to Greater Boston Elderly Legal Services in Boston for legal appeals. To contact SHINE, call 800-243-4636 and press 2. To contact Greater Boston Elderly Services, call 800-323-3205. Reporter Sue Scheible can be reached at 617-786-7044, by mail at The Patriot Ledger, Box 699159, Quincy, MA 02269-9159 or e-mail at email@example.com.

That's what MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell called today's "gold medal" in Nevada for presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Sure the state was uncontested by any other Republican except for Ron Paul, but by winning out there, Romney picked up 31 delegates to South Carolina's measly 24, right? So by bailing on this state in favor of an easy victory in the Silver State, Romney comes out on top and holds a huge delegate lead. Well, that's the spin coming from the Romney camp. And, as you can see in that clip above, it's being pushed pretty heavily by another MSNBC anchor, my very favorite Joe Scarborough. But there's a problem. Nevada isn't awarding any delegates today. Actually, today's caucus was basically the equivalent of a straw poll.

President Trump is holding a post-election news conference Wednesday, which he announced with a tweet: "I will be doing a news conference at The White House - 11:30 A.M. Will be discussing our success in the Midterms!" Though the Democrats won back control of the House, Republicans increased their margins in the Senate. CBS News' Major Garrett reported that the president said he was ecstatic as he watched the election results come in. He had focused in the closing days of the campaign on helping Republicans maintain their majority in the Senate, and that effort appears to have paid off. Wednesday morning, he was tweeting about the GOP's "Big Victory." WWW.TRUNEWS.COM TRUNEWS WITH RICK WILES (TRUNEWS Radio Broadcast) SPECIAL GUESTS: Aaron & Melissa Klein and Herb Titus What’s up with Raul Castro’s pledge to go to church? Is it a genuine conviction of his soul, or is liberation theology being re-introduced by the Marxists? Aaron Klein, co-owner of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, talks to Rick about Oregon’s prosecution of his small bakery over a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. Later in the program, constitutional law expert Dr. Herb Titus tells Rick what is at stake in the upcoming Supreme Court decision about same sex marriage. AARON & MELISSA KLEIN Aaron Klein is the husband of Melissa, the two Christian bakers from Oregon who were ordered to pay "damages" to the lesbian couple they turned away in 2013. In January 2013, Aaron Klein was approached by a mother and her daughter as the two were interested in a cake for the daughter’s upcoming wedding—to her lesbian partner. “My first question was what’s the wedding date,” Klein told television station KTW in Portland. “My next question was [the] bride and groom’s name. … The girl giggled a little bit and said, ‘It’s two brides.’” He then informed the women that the bakery does not make cakes for homosexual events. “I apologized for wasting their time and said that, unfortunately, we do not do same-sex marriages,” Klein explained. The women left Sweet Cakes upset about the incident, and later, one of them filed a complaint with the state. The Oregon attorney general’s office soon launched an investigation against the Klein’s as the state’s non-discrimination laws prevent public accommodations from being denied to any individual on the basis of “race, color, religion, sex or sexual orientation.” But Klein states that he regularly serves homosexuals. He believes that there is a difference between serving homosexuals in general and having to personally facilitate same-sex ceremonies, which is an act of participation. “I have customers come in almost on a weekly basis that are homosexual,” he said. “They can buy my stuff. I sell stuff. I talk with them. That’s fine. … This was not the first time we’ve served these girls.” “We were being asked to participate in something that we could not participate in,” Klein’s wife, Melissa, noted. Some Christians believe that being a part of a same-sex event violates the biblical command in 1 Timothy 5:22 not to be “partakers in other men’s sins,” as well as the command in Ephesians 5:7, “Be not ye therefore partakers with them.” HERB TITUS http://www.herbtitus.com/ Herbert W. On the Sea Islands along the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia, a painful chapter of American history is playing out again. These islands are home to the Gullah or Geechee people, the descendants of enslaved Africans who were brought to work at the plantations that once ran down the southern Atlantic coast. After the Civil War, many former slaves on the Sea Islands bought portions of the land where their descendants have lived and farmed for generations. That property, much of it undeveloped waterfront land, is now some of the most expensive real estate in the country. But the Gullah are now discovering that land ownership on the Sea Islands isn’t quite what it seemed. Local landowners are struggling to hold on to their ancestral land as resort developers with deep pockets exploit obscure legal loopholes to force the property into court-mandated auctions. These tactics have successfully fueled a tourism boom that now attracts more than 2 million visitors a year. Gullah communities have all but disappeared, replaced by upscale resorts and opulent gated developments that new locals — golfers, tourists, and mostly white retirees — fondly call “plantations.” Faced with an epic case of déjà vu, the Gullah are scrambling for solutions as their livelihood and culture vanish, one waterfront mansion at a time.
