Fertile, healthy soil is essential for agriculture and food security. Without it we couldn’t grow the food we need to live. But it’s at risk from many different threats: erosion, degradation, poor soil management, desertification and urbanization. Syngenta works with growers to help them restore the fertility of the soil they farm. We’ve committed to improve the fertility of 10 million hectares of farmland on the brink of degradation. Visit http://www.goodgrowthplan.com to find out more.

Jesus used the natural world to teach people all the time. This object lesson follows His lead in teaching the Parable of the Sower found in Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 4:1-20, and Luke 8:4-15. Lesson is simple and engages the kids on a number of levels, plus gives them a little 'take home' gift as a reminder of the truths of the parable. Our topic for today is Soil Formation. Soil is formed by the combination of physical, chemical and biological processes in which huge rocks are broken down into smaller particles over a long period of time. Rocks undergo a process of expansion and contraction in which they expand during the day and contract during the night due to the constant rise and fall in temperature. However, not all parts of a rock undergo expansion and contraction at the same rate, resulting in the formation of cracks. Gradually, these cracks cause the rocks to break down into smaller pieces. With time, these smaller pieces convert into particles and form soil. Water plays an important role in soil formation. Water that gets collected in the cracks of rocks sometimes freezes, which helps in widening the cracks. Also, flowing river water helps in the wearing down of rocks over time, which results in the formation of soil. Strong blowing winds also rub against rocks and help in wearing them down. Lastly, some living organisms like lichens, that grow on rock surfaces release certain substances that cause rock surfaces to powder down and form a thin layer of soil.

It results in the loss of valuable top soil and important nutrients that are necessary for crops to grow. There are 3 major kinds of erosion: wind, water, and tillage.

Layers of Soil. Soil is composed of 5 distinct layers. O Horizon: This layer is dark in color. This layer consists of decomposed leaves, organic matter and humus, which makes the soil fertile. A Horizon: This layer is called as top soil. It is a soft porous layer and is very rich in humus and nutrients. It is a shelter for living organisms like worms and rodents. Plant roots grow in this layer. B Horizon: This is a hard and compact layer. Roots of bigger plants extend till this layer. It consists of many minerals. This layer is also known as sub soil. C Horizon: Here we can find slightly weathered parent rocks that have cracks and crevices. Bedrock is the last layer of soil. This layer is very hard. It consists of unweathered parent rocks. The vertical section through whichthe different layers of the soil are visible is called soil profile.

Our topic for today is Seed Germination. The life of a plant begins from a tiny seed. The seed is protected by an outer covering called a seed coat. The seed contains a small baby plant called the embryo. Conditions required for the growth of a seed are Moisture, Warmth, Nutrient rich soil, Sunlight and Good quality seed. Once, these conditions are satisfied, the seed begins to grow. The seed absorbs water from the soil and provides moisture to the embryo. The plant cells inside the seed start duplicating, enzymes get activated and the embryo starts getting nourishment. The first sign of growth is a tiny root which comes out of the seed. With more and more nourishment, the embryo starts growing. Eventually, the growing plant bursts open through the seed coat in search of sunlight to start its own process of photosynthesis. Once the seed coat falls off, the root starts growing downwards to anchor the seed and to search for more food and nutrients from the soil. Meanwhile, the shoot also starts growing upwards towards the light. Soon, we see a baby plant with tiny leaves. This process of the growth of a seed into a plant is called germination.

3 Types of Rocks. On the bases of their formation, rocks are broadly divided into three types, namely igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks are found in volcanic regions. Igneous rocks are formed from magma, which is a molten material found deep inside the earth. This molten magma comes upwards or even erupts from a volcano in the form of lava. When this lava cools, it leads to the formation of igneous rocks. Pumice and Granite are examples of igneous rocks. Sandstone, coal and limestone are examples of sedimentary rocks. When limestone is subjected to pressure and heat, it forms marble, a type of metamorphic rock. Quartzite and slate are examples of metamorphic rocks.

In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina gives us a real world example of how the Hydrosphere and Geosphere affect each other in the form of Weathering and Erosion. Our topic for today is Parts of a Plant. A plant has many different parts that perform various functions. The 2 main parts of the plant are the root and shoot. Root usually grows under the ground while shoot usually grows above the ground. The shoot has different parts called the stem, leaves, flowers and fruits. The stem is the stalk of the plant. It helps the plant to stand upright. It carries water and minerals from the roots to the leaves and carries food prepared by the leaves to the different parts of the plant. Branches are parts that grow from the stem. Leaves grow on the stem and branches. They are usually green due to the presence of chlorophyll, which helps them to prepare food. Leaves have small openings called stomata, through which plants take in and give out air. Flowers are the reproductive parts of the plant. They come in different shapes, sizes and colours. By the process of pollination, many flowers develop into delicious fruits, which are eaten by us. Roots help to anchor the plant to the ground. They absorb the water and minerals required for the growth of the plant.
