When asked to build housing for 100 families in Chile ten years ago, Alejandro Aravena looked to an unusual inspiration: the wisdom of favelas and slums. Rather than building a large building with small units, he built flexible half-homes that each family could expand on. It was a complex problem, but with a simple solution — one that he arrived at by working with the families themselves. With a chalkboard and beautiful images of his designs, Aravena walks us through three projects where clever rethinking led to beautiful design with great benefit. A rooftop running track will connect the two towers of this housing complex, designed by Milan-based Peter Pichler Architecture for a Dutch town. Peter Pichler's firm won an international competition with its design for the Looping Towers. The figure-of-eight-shaped scheme will be built in Maarssen, Utrecht, on a plot facing the Vecht river. Measuring 35,000 square metres in total, the scheme will include 260 apartments, set within two L-shaped towers at opposite corners of the site. This layout creates open spaces at the centre of the site, and also leaves space for the running track, which will top a low-rise structure that connects the two towers. Because of the figure-of-eight shape, this track extends through part of the building. As well as the track, there will also be a swimming pool on top of the western tower. The central opening will give residents clear views to the river on the northern side of the site, while also allowing plenty of light into the building from the south. Similarly, the sloped sides of the block will also help to give each home enough natural light. All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? In the small town of Rijssen we designed the new healthcare and housing complex ‘Eltheto’ for elderly people. Until recently elderly people were seen as a group that isn't part of modern society and are only in need of care. The contemporary healthcare centers and housing for elderly people are still designed according to his idea. In the past decades this resulted in a range of introvert buildings where the main focus was to provide healthcare for the elderly instead of quality of life. The new generation of elderly (the baby boom generation) has different ideas on how they want to live when they are in need of healthcare. They want to remain independent and stay connected, have a social life, friends and family. For Eltheto we separated the housing and healthcare program. The housing program functions like a particular housing program that one would find in a suburb. They are open and social housing blocks where the main focus is on the quality of life and staying part of the social context. For the less independent inhabitants the housing program is adjusted according to their needs, but still the focus on quality of life remains. The urban layout is designed according to this idea. The housing blocks are situated around several public spaces. The public spaces interact between the housing blocks, the centrally located healthcare facility and the neighborhood. It’s a place where the old meet the young, a place to rest, be active or sit on the terrace of the new public restaurant. The public space belongs to the people living at Eltheto. They are free to transform the space according to their own ideas and needs. This creates a strong social bond between the elderly inhabitants because they have to organize themselves to maintain the public space. Whether they want to start urban farming, play petanque or organize a neighborhood party it’s all possible. The architecture of the different housing blocks reflects if they house a more individual program or a more socially orientated program. Although this results into different volumes the blocks are clearly part of the same family that together with the public space become a warm and welcome place for everyone. link to the project on our site: http://www.2by4.nl

Interesting architecture doesn't always come with a high price tag. In a similar vein to the S House and Low Cost House, Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao unveiled an US$8,000 home at this year's Chicago Architecture Biennial. The low-cost house could perhaps one day complement existing social housing options in Mexico. Architectural drawing of the $8,000 home Architectural drawing of the $8,000 home's various configurations Architectural drawing of the $8,000 home Architectural drawing of the $8,000 home Working under the assertion that Mexico currently has a shortage of affordable housing, Bilbao conducted interviews and workshops with people who may benefit from a low-cost house, asking what they wanted. The resulting home is colorful and flexible – though admittedly very basic. It comprises a central core built from concrete blocks, with surrounding modules constructed from wooden pallets. The pallets allow relatively easy expansion and alteration, and they're also used instead of windows to offer natural light and ventilation in suitable areas of the home. There are several potential layouts. One comprises a house suitable for a small family which includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen, and a combined dining and living space. A larger family could add additional bedrooms and even an outdoor terrace, while other layouts depicted in the architect's plans include a large workshop and a store that takes up much of the ground floor. Depending on its size, the local regulations, and location, the home would be priced at a minimum of $8,000 and rise to a maximum of $14,000. However, a few concerns spring to mind, including the toxicity of some pallets (which are often treated in chemicals), the apparent lack of insulation, plus whether the home would even be preferable to existing social housing schemes. Still, it's early days yet and assuming such concerns are addressed, the home could be an interesting alternative to social housing, especially for rural and semi-rural areas. On this note, Dezeen reports that the house was commissioned by Mexico's government as part of a low-cost housing scheme and that 23 have been built thus far (20 for a private client). http://newatlas.com/8000-dollar-house-tatiana-bilbao/39919/

Jean Nouvel (born 12 August 1945) is a French architect. Nouvel studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a founding member of Mars 1976 and Syndicat de l'Architecture. He has obtained a number of prestigious distinctions over the course of his career, including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (technically, the prize was awarded for the Institut du Monde Arabe which Nouvel designed), the Wolf Prize in Arts in 2005 and the Pritzker Prize in 2008. A number of museums and architectural centres have presented retrospectives of his work. The resolution of social housing has always been a tricky issue and a suspense account for the great architects who are used to solve large spaces and work with high budgets. Since the beginning of the twentieth century with the expansion of cities due to the strong increase in the number of plants (from the Industrial Revolution), the need for more homes to be noted. The deficit increased with the exodus of population from rural to urban areas led to the urgent need for mass housing and low cost. The cities were not prepared for such growth, and lacked the necessary infrastructure for this new situation. The lack of safe water and hygiene and sanitation led to epidemics that resulted in tragedy. This reality is echoed in the designs of the era, and soon to appear for settlement proposals. Working-class districts, with the repetition of the minimum housing standard were the first response. Almost at the same time, examples emerged in Russia's affairs and are committed to using new materials. But the first World War, coupled with the economic crisis in the United States which had caused a large scale again this urgent need. The destruction of entire cities and the sharp increase in construction costs require new solutions. The first attempts in the Netherlands were the prelude to the contribution of Le Corbusier in his buildings as city halls self. Since the 70s, the search for new theoretical and practical responses decreased worldwide, supported by the rise of capitalism, investing in commercial buildings to provide revenue. From there, bringing the architecture to social housing has been more mild and isolated models. Without strong intervention by the state and less commitment on the part of architects, examples have been increasingly heterogeneous and without clear guidelines.

If you got a kick out of this check out another modern small home I just finished. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8ATR9wrBVg This small modern home design can be adapted in a number of ways, both with regard to plan and finishes. I've shown it with a horizontal wood siding treatment. I pictured this for the Pacific Northwest, using SIP (structural insulated panel) construction and a "rain screen" siding system. But it could equally well be built with conventional wood framing or even AAC (aerated autoclaved concrete) blocks. If it were built in the Southwest I would consider using a stucco finish, somewhat in the manner of the architect Irving Gill. As far as the plan, the ground floor is one continuous social space. The upper floor has 2 separate private zones and a bath. In this version I've shown the upper floor as an open loft, suitable for a single person or couple, with no children, who want a home office as well as an airy bedroom space. But each of the 2 private zones could also be enclosed to create completely private bedrooms. The total floor area of both levels is 743 ft2 (69 m2). The footprint fits within a 24' square. If you liked my little video, please check out my channel where you can see more of my work. I've got home designs inspired by famous modern architects as well as designs inspired by traditional styles. I'm making all these models in Sketchup, which I'm teaching myself to use. I'm somewhat of a novice at Sketchup and the videos are a bit rough. But I've been designing homes for 25+ years. (I'm old enough that I've lost count). Enjoy! And if you do enjoy, please leave a friendly comment. Thanks! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoog_kGySiu9_fcHzG4iGmw

It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin. I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight. Seven enduring lessons from the mid-century modern case study house program and a call-to-action for architects to consider developing their own case-study homes. The influence of the Case Study House Program in the United States on residential design is remarkable given that it was essentially a regional architecture movement centered in Southern California. In part as a response to the post-war World War II housing shortage and building boom - the now defunct - Arts & Architecture magazine announced the “Case Study House Program” in January of 1945. The editor at the time, John Entenza, handpicked a select group of architects to design and construct homes that were affordable, modern and efficient. Entenza wrote in the program’s announcement that the houses were required to be quote, “conceived within the spirit of our times, using as far as is practicable, many war-born techniques and materials best suited to the expression of man’s life in the modern world,” end quote. In other words the houses were to be devised to disseminate modernist ideas and design culture on a mass scale. Despite the fact that so few were built, many of the case study homes and the ideas they inspired persist today, including the Eames House shown here, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1949. The homes reflected post-war attitudes toward reinvention and social awareness. They helped to define the style of mid-century modernism but they were much more than style. The open floor plans that the homes imagined decades ago are still seen today. They offered a new way of thinking about space and made modern design available and approachable for all. Their budgets were modest, which meant they had to employ off-the-shelf, standardized materials, and they were small in scale. Open plans blurred lines between inside and out and a simple, honest use of materials were key to their economy. This video is an in-depth look at how contemporary architects might employ the case study house as a means to improve our built-environment. For the first time ever, a+t research group has conducted an analysis of ten inspiring masterpieces through drawings and texts highlighting the most important contributions made by each of the architects towards developing desirable housing. The book recognizes masters such as Ignazio Gardella, Jean Renaudie, Ralph Erskine and Fumihiko Maki, among others, who defended their own personal vision of architecture, a far reach from dogmatism and closer to users. Each story is a journey through multiple possible links which relate the project with works that preceded it, set it against those of its generation and match it up with recent 21st century designs. This is neither a canonical list of buildings nor the top ten of collective housing. They were chosen as one chooses one's friends. Faults and all, they make everything worthwhile. We've grown good at making many things in the modern world - but strangely the art of making attractive cities has been lost. Barnet Homes marked a positive start to 2016 by marking the second phase of house building plans with Barnet Council on Monday 11 January as two sets of families collected the keys to their newly finished council homes in Edgware. The homes are part of a wider programme to build 40 new family sized houses and flats in the borough by spring 2016, and hundreds more homes on council land over the next five years. The new homes, which were built to Code Level 4, (which includes solar panels and Secure by Design) by contractors Bugler, help to address an historic shortage of social housing in Barnet. The families were assessed as in Housing Need, conditions of which included making a positive contribution to the community. Barnet Homes’ Deputy Chief Executive Derek Rust handed over the key to new resident Esther Boakye, who only saw the property the previous Friday. Derek said: “I am delighted to have been present to mark another significant day in the evolution of Barnet Homes’ new build ambitions alongside Barnet Council. It was also a humbling moment to hand the keys to the new residents of Green Lane and see just what it means to the new families who will be moving in making all the hard work with our partners to make it happen worth-while. Derek Rust continued: “I sincerely hope that we never lose the buzz of excitement that comes with creating new homes and communities as we seek the opportunity to increase the volume of building new homes. It truly is a terrific sense of achievement as well as a sense of genuine legacy to the community at large.” Mum-of-three Esther had been living in 2-bed temporary accommodation in Brent. Esther said she relied on the help of family members, particularly her sister Francisa, for the school-run, as her children remained in Barnet schools: “When I viewed the property last Friday, I was so happy. The accommodation I was living in in Brent was tiny, there was just about enough room for my two teenage sons to sit and eat our Christmas dinner on the sofa and myself and my daughter to sort of sit on the floor.” Esther continues: “When I told the children about the new house, they couldn’t believe it and even though they haven’t seen it yet – they have already googled their new route to their schools. “I am so looking forward to settling in. I couldn’t have done this without my sister who helped me during my homeless periods and of course, Barnet Homes for finding me a settled home for the family.”

More than half of the world's population already lives in cities, and another 2.5 billion people are projected to move to urban areas by 2050. The way we build new cities will be at the heart of so much that matters, from climate change to economic vitality to our very well-being and sense of connectedness. Peter Calthorpe is already at work planning the cities of the future and advocating for community design that's focused on human interaction. He shares seven universal principles for solving sprawl and building smarter, more sustainable cities. Model of temporary housing project is a new approach to solving the housing problem primarily intended for social groups which are disadvantaged. With increasing poverty and migration, as well as a lack of adequate strategies in the implementation of housing policies, the needs for alternative types of housing are increasing. The main objective is, first of all, the answer to current social and political scene of Serbia and the region, with the possibility of using it in other, broader social context. The main features that affect accessibility and applicability of alternative housing models are: economic viability, mobility, and possibilities of reuse and repurposing, prefabrication and the use of recycled materials. Models of temporary housing, related to the topic Belgrade / Energy Spots project, defines the use of alternative types of housing in different social scenarios and in relation to the contexts of the city, in order to address the lack of housing intended for specific groups of people. Project redefines the housing model in relation to selected spatial structure formation within the city that has adequate physical capacity and potential for accommodation. Context / spatial formations define a typology of housing and settlements, where the key element is a basic residential unit, which is used in defining this model. It is, actually, a module for the accommodation of a family, which in further multiplication can form a structure in accordance with the needs within the social scenarios and in relation to town’s demands. Models of temporary housing project is defined as temporary assistance to socially vulnerable groups, aimed to establish a long-term resolution of housing issues and raising awareness about the issue itself and its social change, in order to create more humane living conditions for those in need.

Paul Chambers had began building a home out of two shipping containers as a project, but when his wife got tired of suburbia and put their four-bedroom home on the market, his project became the couple’s full-time home (Paul’s ebook: www.buildshippingcontainerhouse.com) Paul and Sarah Chambers were living in rural Scotland when Paul received a job offer in Australia. They packed their belongings and moved to a large home with a pool in an Australian suburb. After only a few months, they began to tire of spending so much of their income on their home. They also felt they’d lost touch with nature and a more active lifestyle (“there weren’t even any trails for walking”, explains Sarah). So they sold their home and moved with Paul’s “project”: two shipping containers he’d been transforming into a kitchen/bathroom + bedroom/living room. They found someone willing to let them park their new home on their rural property in exchange for making improvements to the land. When the couple first moved onto the property, the home was a very simple shelter and over the following three years, they built the containers into a proper home. Their home is completely off the electric and water grids. When they first moved to the bush they used a 3kw Honda generator, but they’ve since installed 2Kw of photovoltaic panels and a bank of batteries and phased out the generator. They have enough energy to power their home with all its conventional appliances, including a standard fridge/freezer. For heating, they rely on firewood (collected from fallen trees on the property; they have “not cut down a single tree”). For air conditioning, they use fans and AC “during really hot days”. In the beginning they had to rely on water deliveries, but Paul has since installed an extensive rainwater capture setup- both on the roof and gutters beneath the home- which provides for all their water needs: 65 square metres of rain water collection in 10,000 liters of storage. The indoor bathroom includes a shower, but Paul built an outdoor, open air bathtub which they heat with solar in the summertime. They’ve also created an extensive vegetable garden inside a netted garden cage (after the animals and hot sun destroyed their first attempts). For eggs, they have two hen houses. Paul has published an ebook explaining how he built the home including a step-by-step guide: buying and moving shipping containers, a wiring diagram and schematics, installing solar panels and a breakdown of costs.
