Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain. What happens, if you're not getting close to 8 hours of sleep per night, the hormone called cortisol increases in your blood and this hormone is responsible for storing fat. So, as your cortisol levels go up because of lack of sleep, you can gain weight. Another thing that happens when you don't have a lot of sleep is that your willpower to make healthy choices decreases. If you're exhausted during the day, that piece of candy looks a lot more attractive and you feel that you deserve it and so you're more likely to eat it. So, it's very important that you try to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night it's part of a healthy lifestyle to help not just lose weight but also to maintain a healthy weight. So, while lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, people who suffer from obesity typically don't get a good night's sleep. And one of the main reasons for this is something called sleep apnea. When you're overweight you can have sleep apnea and what happens is that while you're sleeping you actually stop breathing for periods of time and this leads to dangerously low oxygen saturations. And then when you wake up in the morning you're just not feeling as well rested. You also may wake up with a bad headache so, being overweight definitely affects the quality of sleep.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 65% of Americans are overweight or obese. Most experts say our sedentary lifestyle and excessive caloric intake are to blame. But we're also getting less sleep, and sleep deprivation is just coming to light as a factor associated with obesity. There are an ever-increasing number of studies finding a direct connection between sleep deprivation and weight gain. In a study involving 9,000 people between 1982 and 1984, researchers found that people who averaged 6 hours of sleep per night were 27% more likely to be overweight than their counterparts who slept 7-to-9 hours per night. Those averaging 5 hours of sleep per night were 73% more likely to be overweight. In a Harvard Nurses' Health Study, women who slept less than 5 hours per night were 30% more likely to gain at least 33 pounds over time, than women who slept 7 to 8 hours per night. Researchers measured growth hormone levels in 20yo men who were restricted to 6 hours of sleep per night. Growth hormone regulates both blood sugar and the body's proportion of fat to muscle. Without adequate sleep, the production of growth hormone goes down. The study concluded that sleep deprivation during your 20s can lead to a middle-age paunch later in life. The amount of sleep you get early in life can even affect your health when you get older. How does this happen? Inadequate sleep affects a hormone that regulates carbohydrate metabolism called leptin. When leptin levels are low, you crave carbohydrates which leads to a vicious cycle of more carbs, more insulin and a yo-yo affect on blood sugar levels. The end result is obesity and even pre-diabetes....and sometimes, even to full blow diabetes. So, can you lose weight while you sleep? It sounds like something you'd hear on a late night infomercial. But as wild as the idea sounds, substantial medical evidence suggests a fascinating link between getting adequate sleep, your hormones and your weight. What an ideal circumstance! Well this is the question that I tackle in today's video. I have a lot of clients constantly asking me how to lose weight, but very rarely do people even consider the fact that you can boost your metabolism while sleeping. I think this is because most people relate fat loss to hard work and high intensity exercise. This is definitely true, there are no quick fix shortucts to achieving the body you want. However, there are little tricks you can do to help increase the amount of calories you burn. So let me explain to you how to burn fat while sleeping. Losing weight while you sleep is one of the easiest tricks to burn more fat. The first tip that is probably the most important is to increase your resting metabolism in general. I go over this topic in depth in my "how to increase your metabolism" video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikQgK7yjPEk Other than increasing your rmr (resting metabolic rate) there are other solutions for how to lose weight while you sleep. One such solution is to focus on specific types of training that break down more muscle tissue. Weight training in general is proven to be the best way to break down muscle tissue safely and effectively. Slow repetitions with weight heavy enough to take you to failure is one of the best ways to maximize hypertrophy or muscle breakdown and gain. When your muscles are broken down it takes time and energy (aka calories) to repair your damaged muscles. So if you do weight training and break down your muscles, while you are sleeping at night, your muscle tissues will be using calories to repair themselves. The other very effective and simple way to boost the amount of calories you burn while you sleep is by having a high fat high protein meal before bed. Even though a high fat meal before bed sounds a little contradictory, trust me just give it a try. Fat slows the digestion of whatever meal we just ate. So if I have a piece of steak, chances are it will take a lot longer to break down than a whey protein shake. Don't have fat after your workout because you want the protein to breakdown and get into your bloodstream and muscles as fast as possible. To further slow the digestion of the meal you eat before bed, have a slow digesting source of protein. Again whey protein is not very slow digesting, but there are plenty of slow digesting protein sources to choose from. This combined with the fat will literally create a weight loss dinner. Protein sources like casein, cottage cheese, milk, pork, steak, chicken, turkey, salmon, and nut butters. Be careful with the nut butters because one macron-nutrient we do not want to have before bed is carbohydrates. You are Not Eating Breakfast: Many people skip breakfast. You need to try to eat a healthy breakfast. Also try to eat healthy throughout the whole day. When you eat breakfast, you energize your body and feel more alert. You also stay full throughout the day and tend to eat less during your lunch and dinner. When you skip breakfast, your body becomes extremely hungry, and by the time lunch or dinner time roll around, you tend to eat more than you usually would. It’s best to eat breakfast so that you are energized throughout the day and get your metabolism started early. 9. You are Not Getting 7-9 Hours of Sleep. When you don’t sleep enough you are increasing a weight-gaining hormone called cortisol. Too much sleep, and you are still increasing your body mass. Experts recommend 7-9 hours of sleep for a healthy balance. 8. You are Not Going Outdoors: Once you wake up, open the curtains. Light helps ignite your body’s metabolism so don’t stay in the dark for too long. At least 20-30 minutes of outdoor sunlight is enough to affect your body mass. 7. You are Not Keeping A Clean and Comfy Bedroom: Keeping your bedroom clean and comfortable keeps environmental toxins out and can impact the quality of your sleep. Remember it’s not only the quantity, but also the quality. Try to start a daily habit of cleaning your room every morning or every night. Once you make it a habit, you will wonder why you don't always do it. A clean, stress free room and home will help you sleep better and increase your overall happiness when you realize that you don’t have to stress out about cleaning so much. 6. You are Not Measuring Your Weight Every Day: Weigh yourself every day so if your plan is not working, you can adjust it. Weighing yourself will also keep you motivated. Do this in the morning. That’s when the body has less water weight so the measurement is more precise. Try not to obsess about it too much, and keep in mind that depending on how much water you are retaining, you will notice that your weight fluctuates a few pounds every few days. This is perfectly normal, and is nothing to panic about. If you had a carb heavy dinner the night before and are shocked to see the scale jump up five pounds the next morning, don’t freak out. You didn't just gain 5 pounds overnight - all that weight is merely water weight, and will go down within a few days. 5. You Are Not Leaving Any Room in Your Stomach: Our parents taught us to eat everything in our plate. You should not always eat until you are full. The Japanese use a trick where they spit their meal into 10 segments, but only eat 8. If this trick doesn’t work, use a smaller plate, that way your portion will appear bigger. 4. You Are Not Going for Regular Walks: Are you a couch potato? Resist the pull of your couch or office chair and spend more time on your feet. A couple of extra hours of couch time a day can increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. By going out every few days for a brisk 20 to 30 minute walk, you can slowly start to introduce a form of exercise to your life and also burn calories. And instead of taking the elevator at work or driving to the corner store, consider taking the stairs or walking to the store. You can also consider taking your bike, too! These are great alternatives which can help you burn calories. This can lead to eventual weight loss! 3. You Are Not Avoiding Zero Calorie Soda: Do you think zero calorie soda will keep you slim? Wrong. Zero calorie sodas are filled with synthetic estrogen which affects your thyroid gland, leading to weight gain, according to Red River Health and Wellness. 2. You Are Not Going to Bed: When you ignore your bedtime you’re contributing to the factors that cause anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular disease. Resist the temptation to be a night owl and catch some zzz's. As mentioned earlier in this video, you should also avoid the kitchen at this time. 1. You Are Not Sleeping with the Lights Off: Sleeping with the lights on lowers the quality of sleep. And as we know, sleep is extremely important because it helps our bodies rest and recover. Now sleep deprivation in general causes an imbalance of hormones that control your appetite. You have two hormones that control your appetite, leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is a hormone that lets you feel satisfied after meals, and ghrelin is the hormone that makes you feel hungry. So you have an increase in ghrelin, so you're more hungry and you have a decrease in leptin. So you're more satisfied after meals. So you tend to eat more and since you are less satisfied after meals you tend to eat even more on top of that to help you satisfy your hunger. Now there is an alteration in your metabolism when you're sleep deprived, so it is harder to lose weight because your metabolism is not working at its peak level. So in general insomnia will cause weight gain through the effects of sleep deprivation.

Getting enough sleep can greatly affect your weight loss goals. It's been said for many years it's really important to get enough sleep, especially when you're starting a new fitness program. And I KNOW sometimes that may seem like an impossible task. I've done a little bit of research for you and I hope you'll see that you have got to get those Z's. Your body has two different hormones: one that stimulates hunger and one that tells you that you're satisfied. The one that tells stimulates hunger is called ghrelin and it is the one responsible for telling your brain that you need to eat. The hormone that signals tat you've had enough is called leptin. Scientific research has determined that an interesting thing happens when you get too little sleep: your body naturally creates and releases more of the hormone ghrelin while decreasing leptin levels. So, put it together. When you don't have enough sleep, it becomes a hormonal imbalance where you have more ghrelin causing you to have more of an appetite and less leptin telling you when you've had enough. In fact...studies have shown that people who get 5 hours of sleep or less on average each night are 50% MORE likely to be OBESE. Think about that! You're 50% MORE LIKELY to be obese if you function on 5 hours or less of sleep each day. That statistic blew my mind and absolutely made me a believer. I used to be one of those people who could function on 4 hours of sleep on a regular basis. Every now and again I'd get 7 hours if I was lucky. Getting enough sleep each and every night has become a regular part of my life and I'm so glad, especially after doing this research. So what is enough sleep? Studies show that people who get 7-9 hours of sleep every night on average are actually healthier individuals and their hormones are way more balanced. Now if that's not enough to convince you, listen to this: when you're tired, you're naturally going to crave things and eat more and that's because of those two hormones at work in your body. Think about what you reach for when you're hungry. You grab sugary things, treats which are unhealthy; you're less likely to make really wise decisions when you're feeling run down. Do a complete blackout of your room and you will notice a BIG difference in both quality of sleep and ability to get to sleep. Also, computer screens and phone screens confuse melatonin as well. There are nighttime modes on these devices, but it’s always best to just not use them 1 hour before bedtime. Sleeping tip #2. Have A Routine Humans are habitual creatures and creating a systematic routine will improve sleep. Something as simple as brushing your teeth, reading a book for 15 minutes and immediately going to bed is a habit you can build to make your sleep almost automatic at night. Sleeping tip #3. Use Your Bed for Nothing but Sleep and the occasional… physical activity. Goes with the habit thing, but the moment you hit the bed you want the body to recognize that it’s time to fall asleep. So try not to work on your bed or spend anytime on it when you’re not resting. Sleeping tip #4. Use a pillow between or underneath your legs. This will help to maintain the alignment of your back and improve your posture over time. It will also help those of you suffering with lower back pain. A study reveals that a lack of sleep inflicts an almost immediate weight gain. A lack of sleep is nothing to take lightly. Researchers have recently concluded that losing a few hours of shuteye over the course of several consecutive nights can lead to an almost immediate weight gain. University of Colorado sleep researchers had 16 healthy men and women participate in the two-week long project. During the first 3 days all participants slept 9 hours and ate controlled portions. The next 5 days half of the participants were allowed to sleep nine hours at night while the remaining stayed up past midnight, allowing them to get only 5 hours worth of sleep.The second week, both groups traded places, meaning the sleep deprived got an extra four hours. Those who got the least amount of sleep ended up eating way more than their rested counterparts. When they did not receive enough sleep, the participants overate carbohydrates later in the night, presumably to make up for the energy loss. The lead researcher states "When people are sleep-restricted, our findings show they eat during their biological nighttime when internal physiology is not designed to be taking in food." Too little sleep resulted in an average 6 percent daily caloric increase.

He added: "When we are young, we have deep sleep that helps the brain store and retain new facts and information," Walker said. "But as we get older, the quality of our sleep deteriorates and prevents those memories from being saved by the brain at night." Brain waves • The brain creates waves from the middle frontal lobe, as this part of the brain worsens, which generally occurs among elderly, it damages the ability to enter deep sleep, which is critical for keeping memories. • Research is indicating that using electrical stimulation improved sleep and improved memory. • Lead author of this study Bryce Mander, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at UC Berkeley, said: "Can you jumpstart slow wave sleep and help people remember their lives and memories better? It's an exciting possibility." Deep Sleep • The quality of deep sleep on average is much lower for seniors than for younger people often as much as 75 percent. • Studies have reported that it is suggested that the deterioration of the frontal lobe is linked with impaired wave activity. • The special importance of a good nights sleep can not be over emphasized. • Our bodies produce less of the sleep hormone melatonin as we age. Check with your doctor before taking melatonin supplements. Insomnia & Sleep Apnea Insomnia, the most common sleep complaint, which affects almost half of adults 60 and older. - Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which can elevate the risk for high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, and cognitive problems. Snoring, a symptom of OSA, is a very common condition affecting nearly 40 percent of adults, and is more common among older people. Not sleeping well can lead to a number of problems. Older adults who have poor nighttime sleep are more likely to have a depressed mood, attention and memory problems, excessive daytime sleepiness, more nighttime falls and use more over-the-counter or prescription sleep aids. 8 Good Sleep Tips 1-Establishing a routine sleep schedule. -2-Avoiding utilizing bed for activities other than sleep or intimacy. - 3-Avoiding substances that disturb your sleep, like alcohol or caffeine. - 4-Not napping during the day. If you must snooze, limit the time to less than one hour and no later than 3 p.m. - 5-Stick to rituals that help you relax each night before bed. This can include such things as a warm bath, a light snack or a few minutes of reading. - 6-Don’t take your worries to bed. Bedtime is a time to relax, not to hash out the stresses of the day. - 7-If you can't fall asleep, leave your bedroom and engage in a quiet activity.
