The concept of sampling is based on a process whereby as the researcher, you are trying to obtain information from a subset of a larger group. For example, you might be trying to research a particular attitude towards a product in your neighbourhood, but you are only interested in people who have tried a similar product. Therefore, the group is everyone in your neighbourhood, while your subset is the people who have tried a similar product to yours. Step 1: Defining the Population of Interest Step 2: Choose an appropriate Data-Collection Method Step 3: Identify a Sampling Frame Step 4: Identify and select a Sampling Method Step 5: Determine the Sample Size Step 6: Create Operational Procedures for Selecting Sample Elements Step 7: Execute the Operational Sampling Plan Step 1: Defining the Population of Interest When defining the population of interest, you should consider things such as: Geography (location or neighbourhood - could be as small or as large as you require) Demographics (age, income, etc.) Awareness (of your product and/or similar products) Usage (identify the requirements for that particular population of interest). For example, if your product is cosmetics, you might want to know how much people spend annually on cosmetics within your chosen geographical area. Step 2: Choose an appropriate Data-Collection Method Decide how you want to collect your data and the implications of the chosen method. Some common types of data collection methods are: - Face-to-face Interviews - Observations - Surveys - Telephone interviews Step 3: Identify a Sampling Frame The sampling frame can be a little tricky. Generally, the sampling frame is defined as the list of elements from the population from which units to be sampled can be selected. In other terms, identifying the list of elements from which to base your sample. This can be tricky because the sampling frame is rarely 100% accurate. For example, you might want to know the number of people who have had two or more Folgers coffee cups everyday for the past week. This can be extremely difficult, hence, you need to identify a representative sample - which can be achieved through the sampling frame. The sampling frame is therefore a list of elements that will help you narrow done the individuals which fit your study the most. Step 4: Identify and select a Sampling Method When identifying and selecting a sampling method, it is very important to take into account: - the research’s objectives - available financial resources - time limitations - the nature of the problem being researched There are two major types of sampling methods: Probability samples and Nonprobability samples For probability samples, there is a nonzero potential of selecting every element in the chosen population. For instance, blindfolding yourself and randomly chosing 100 people from the population without knowing anything about them. For nonprobability samples, the elements in the chosen population are chosen in a nonrandom manner. For instance, all the people wearing a blue sweater in a population. Step 5: Determine the Sample Size The sample size approach really depends on whether you have chosen probability or nonprobility samples. For probability samples, a formula is usually used to calculate the required sample size, and the acceptable error, as well as the levels of confidence, which is the likelihood that sample size will, within a small range, will be truly representative of the population. In the case of nonprobability samples, it is common to use on rules of thumb, the available budget, and the number of subgroups. Each research will have different dynamics, and the challenge for the researcher is maximizing the research’s validity. Step 6: Create Operational Procedures for Selecting Sample Elements The operational procedures are your ‘plan’ of execution. It is how you plan to conduct the research. This is much more critical with probability samples in order to avoid researcher bias and errors. The procedures can be a list of instructions that will be followed in order to maximize a sample’s inclusion in the research. Step 7: Execute the Operational Sampling Plan The operational sampling plan is put into execution! If as a researcher, you start to notice issues with the execution, it is always best to tackle those issues early. It is important to avoid gathering significant amounts of data and then realize that the data is not representative of the research’s objectives. Visit us @ www.MindCoral.com

What is FOOD COMPOSITION DATA? What does FOOD COMPOSITION DATA mean? FOOD COMPOSITION DATA meaning - FOOD COMPOSITION DATA definition - FOOD COMPOSITION DATA explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Food composition data (FCD) are detailed sets of information on the nutritionally important components of foods and provide values for energy and nutrients including protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals and for other important food components such as fibre. The data are presented in food composition databases (FCDBs). In the UK, FCD is listed in tables known as The Chemical Composition of Foods, McCance and Widdowson (1940) and in the first edition the authors stated that: ‘A knowledge of the chemical composition of foods is the first essential in the dietary treatment of disease or in any quantitative study of human nutrition’. This demonstrates the main reason for establishing FCD at that time. To this day, food composition studies remain central to nutrition research into the role of food components and their interactions in health and disease. However, due to increasing levels of sophistication and complexity in nutrition science, there is a greater demand for complete, current and reliable FCD, together with information on a wider range of food components, including bioactive compounds. FCD are important in many fields including clinical practice, research, nutrition policy, public health and education, and the food manufacturing industry and is used in a variety of ways including: national programmes for the assessment of diet and nutritional status at a population level (e.g. epidemiological researchers assessing diets at a population level); development of therapeutic diets (e.g. to treat obesity, diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, food allergy and intolerance) and institutional diets (e.g. schools, hospitals, prisons, day-care centres) and nutrition labelling of processed foods. The earliest food composition tables were based solely on chemical analyses of food samples, which were mostly undertaken specifically for the tables. However, as the food supply has evolved, and with the increasing demand for nutritional and related components, it has become more difficult for compilers to rely only on chemical analysis when compiling FCDBs. For example, in the UK the third edition of The Composition of Foods presented data on vitamin content of foods. However, due to the amount of information already available and in order to avoid the need to analyse every food for every vitamin, values from the scientific literature were included, although the tables are still predominately based on analytical data. Chemical analysis of food samples carried out in analytical laboratories is typically the preferred method for creating FCD. The food samples are carefully chosen using a defined sampling plan to ensure that they are representative of the foods being consumed in a country. This includes accounting for factors that could affect the nutrient content of a food as purchased (e.g. region and/or country of origin, season, brand, fortification) or as consumed (e.g. storage, preparation and cooking methods). If necessary, further preparation and cooking takes place prior to the analysis using appropriate analytical methods and often appropriate samples of foods are combined rather than taking averages of individually analysed food samples. Ideally, the methods used for analysis should have been shown to be reliable and reproducible, i.e. those recommended by organisation such as the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) or the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

Coyotes attacked my chickens the other night. They surrounded my chicken tractor. There was a group of them around the chicken tractor, another group behind the camper and another group in the next meadow. They were yipping excitedly because they found a source of food and were closing in to attack. Fortunately the chicken tractor is Fort Knox and they did no harm before I chased them off. I have my electric fence off until I get power outside my RV. There are no electrical outlets outside the RV and I need to fix that problem asap. I spent a full day testing out the barrel stove and homemade stove shed. I started out with a very slow and careful burn and worked up a little bit at a time. I am being extra careful to be safe. I want to make sure the temperatures on the walls and ceiling of my outdoor wood stove shed are safe. I am heating my RV with the wood stove through an open window and using a 12 volt box fan to blow heat into the RV. I still need to insulate between the RV and the shed and porch much more to eliminate drafts and heat loss. I used my laser thermometer to test temperatures all around the wood stove to make sure everything is safe. So far it all seems fine. I still plan to put up some heat shielding around the stove pipe on all sides to protect the shed framing and roof. I will use the same idea used on car exhaust systems with a piece of flashing suspended about an inch away from the pipe itself. This should lower the temperatures on the ceiling of the stove shed. It is getting colder outisde but I had it a nice, toasty 75 degrees F inside during the day and it was still near 70 inside and 46 outside later on after the sun went down. I let the fire die out before I went to bed for safety though. I do not want to risk anything until I am sure it will be safe. I received a package from Lindon Farms. This is a survival food pack containing 60 servings of freeze dried meals. I cooked up a batch of potato soup for myself and Chris to try out for lunch. I used the SilverFire stove to cook the meal on. Makes sense to use a survival biomass rocket stove to cook a survival meal on. The soup cooked up nicely and tasted very good. This was Chris' first ever potato soup and he really enjoyed it. It needed a bit of salt but that is good news for many people who do not want too much sodium in their diet. Many freeze dried survival rations have too much sodium. Lindon Farms has an awesome package where you sign up and get a discount price of $59 per month. Each month they send you a new package of freeze dried survival rations. This is a good deal for those who cannot normally stock up. I would strongly encourage all families to do so. I am not being paid or this. I believe everyone should be prepared for emergency, loss of income, or disaster. Believe me, I have survived a few natural disasters myself and am very happy to have preps on hand. This week we are going to show you how to properly take water, protein, and soil samples from your property. These samples can then be analyzed to give you an idea of water and soil quality on your land. You can take your results and develop a plan to improve aspects of your property such as the soil for you food plots, or existing vegetation that's already on your property. A deer manager can also learn why one water hole is preferred over another and determine if more should or shouldn't be created in the area.
