13:21
If you're an artist or band trying to get your music out to the world (or even make a living) then you need to play by the new rules. Gone are the old days of the music industry where you would hope to get signed and then become a star (i.e. everything would be done for you). Today you need to view yourself (and your music) through the lens of three very important truths. I call them the new rules of the music industry, and those who play by them will succeed.

How to Create a Sample Reel to Promote Your Studio Business

08:20
Free access to premium courses from David Glenn ➥ https://theproaudiofiles.com/members Ear training for EQ ➥ http://quiztones.com Learn compression ➥ https://learncompression.com Some tips for creating a sample reel to promote your studio business. — Transcript Excerpt: Today I want to talk to you about business, and hopefully a strategy that will help you to grow your business. If you're doing this professionally or you're doing it on the side to make some extra money, if you're a hobbyist and you would like to transition into maybe finding some clients that are willing to pay you, this could be a huge step in the right direction for you. This works for me, I swear by it, I tell everybody about it that I can to try to help as many people as possible, and I've written an article about it. I've got that pulled up on the screen over at theproaudiofiles.com on Grow Your Studio Business, it's called “How to Attract New Clients to Your Studio,” I would encourage you to go read this, but I want to scroll down. The part that I'm going to talk about today and show you in Pro Tools is how I share my work and I create an mp3 of my latest samples. Well, this is that session. In Pro Tools, I would go and I would drag songs in so that they each have their own track. You'll see that there's some processing on some of these tracks. One track I just did some processing because as I listened to it, I felt like it was a little muddy, so I threw the VMR on there. A little shout out for the Slate plug that was just released. You can see I've just faded in and out of multiple samples. This one's a little bit longer because it's for that video. I recommend keeping your sample reel to about 4 or 5 songs and be genre specific. So if you want to gain a bunch of hip hop work, then throw your hip hop samples in, and go find hip hop artists. If you're working to find maybe some country artists, by all means, take just the country samples. I work a lot in the Gospel and CCM world, and there's a lot of cross genre work going on, so one artist in the Pop/Hip Hop/R&B world, they may also have some folk stuff, so for me, I take those samples and I market to that niche. You want to be specific on who you're trying to reach. You want to pull those samples in, fade them in and out of each other. What I was trying to say there was you want to keep it to about 30-45 seconds, so don't be afraid to fade in and tease them for 5 seconds on one song, fade it out, maybe 5 or 6 of the next, 10 seconds of the next. Try to keep it short and sweet, because people don't have a lot of time, and our attention spans are a lot less than what we give ourselves credit for, so you want to really capture them with your most impactful stuff first. Don't be afraid to include a ballad or whatever, but make sure it's not the first thing you hear, unless you're marketing to people who are doing a lot of ballads. That would be a good idea. [sample reel] I'm going to stop it there, because I want to talk about individual processing so that they sound – I dunno mastered is the right way to say it, but you want them to sound good transitioning in and out of each other. Some genres by themselves are going to be maybe darker than others, or wider than others, or more low-end, and that kind of stuff, and with this sample reel, you're really putting yourself on the spot here, and you've got to be careful not to let one song out-perform another too much. And so, for me, if I bypass VMR, I'll open up and show you what I did, I used a free plug-in, but coming out of this song, listen to what this sounds like without my processing here, and without the limiter on. [song plays] Noticing the difference, the transition there, this song is one that I actually didn't master. It went to a mastering engineer with the rest of the record. It was mixed by myself and a few other guys. So what I did is I pulled in a maximizer for this song, set it to a certain setting just to kind of hit it a little harder, and then I've got a mastered – not a mastered, but a limiter on the overall big picture just so that if anything was going a little bit above, that it kind of hits it and keeps kind of a consistent level. Nothing really too much going on with that. But then VMR, I felt like Chosen was a little bit too beefy, a little bit too much low-end. It's kind of muddy, so I'm going to show you now that we've got that limiter on to help that one be a little louder, we'll adjust the volume there. You could use clip-gain as well, that's a cool tool.

Recording studio budgets with the mixing and sample costs

https://lorenweisman.com/ https://CWealthC.com/ Recording studio budgets with the mixing and sample costs for your tracks. A Music Branding Strategist and Speaker Video Blog. All too often, when it comes down to mix, artists seem to cut corners when it comes to their https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23recordingstudio budgets around the https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23mixingcosts, sample costs and how to get the most out of a mix for the best profits. Your tracks need to be mixed not just for the songs that they are but also for samples, no vocal versions and even loops and different formats. When you are booking that recording https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23studiotime, you have to make sure the money for the recording studio budgets for all the things that need to happen with consideration of how long it will actually take to happen. An https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23artists guide to the best music business plan for recording studio budgets is to think about everything you want to do beforehand, from the mixing costs and sample costs of the songs you want to make, but also taking in to consideration the recording studio time that it will take to get the alternate mixes and samples you are looking for. Planning for this on the front side will save you a fortune on the backside. Make sure the time you have in the recording studio budgets for those short samples and fade in and fade-outs that will serve as stronger samples than just cutting the first 15 seconds of a song. Mixing down and finding those samples as you are doing the actual mix will help cut down the mixing costs and sample costs as a whole and give you a different ear on them instead of doing it at a later date. As a share with audiences as a music branding strategist and speaker, I ask them to make sure they are following the music business plan they put together to make sure their recording studio budgets take it into consideration all the small details. In turn, it will save them big bucks in the end. Music Funding - Making a Music Business Plan to ensure your spending

02:28
https://lorenweisman.com/ https://CWealthC.com/ Music Funding - Making a Music Business Plan to ensure your spending. A Brand Strategist and Counselor Loren Weisman Video Blog. With apologies to Chuck Lorre, Richard Lewis and Two and a Half Men, this is a music funding video giving an example of bad preparation and bad spending vs having a well-prepared music business plan and well-designated spending. Musicians and bands need to spend money on studio time, on marketing and on the other numerous line items to create a successful profitable band that will eventually go from red to black. However, many bands spend recklessly and are not building up a reserve or a return on their investments or even worse a return for the others investing in them. The money can just get sucked up. Investment risk management comes down to preparing the best plan for the best chances at music funding and the expenses that need to be allocated for while at the same time saving as much as possible as well. Working to reduce the risk, as best you can for your self and those investing in you. This is the difference during an artist development phase of the smarter band finding the money to invest into a music business plan, instead of spending all sort of extra money, in the long run, to get the same desired results from series of smaller costs that end up costing so much more in the end. As a brand strategist and counselor, I really push the concept of budgeting, organizing and maximizing the savings in the long term so that success and profit can occur sooner. The smart investment planning, in the beginning, can create savings down the line. Yes it may cost more and you may have to borrow, but it will save you much more in the long run and allow you to see profit much faster. ******************************* Brand Precision Marketing Strategist and Counselor Loren Weisman organizes, optimizes & implements individualized branding, marketing & content plans for start-up and established businesses including professional services, https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23entrepreneurs, artists, entertainers, athletes, authors and investors. ******************************* Hosted by Brand Strategist and Counselor Loren Weisman and distributed across iHeartRadio, “Wait What Really OK” is a Methodical, Comical & Informational Podcast covering the best approaches for business and the arts today. ******************************* Loren is based in Winter Garden, Florida, USA and is available to clients over phone, Skype or in person. ******************************* For more on Loren’s consulting, coaching, strategy work, books & speaking options as well as where to listen to the podcast, visit: https://lorenweisman.com/ https://waitwhatreallyok.com/ https://facebook.com/lorenweisman74/ https://twitter.com/lorenweisman/ ******************************* Music Funding - Making a Music Business Plan.

Music Business Planning. Goal planning with detail and direction.

02:18
https://lorenweisman.com/ https://CWealthC.com/ Music Business Planning. Goal planning with detail and direction. A Brand Strategist and Counselor Loren Weisman Video Blog. When it comes to creating a music business plan with a music producer, a music brand strategist and counselor, a small business association or whoever you are working with, the goal planning and organization has to be in place and address all the elements to make it work correctly from start to finish. In order to create the best music industry plan for the music industry market of today, the plan has to not only address the costs, expenses and end results of the long term. It also has to address the baby steps right out of the gate and in the beginning. This includes the things the artist, label or music business management group can do before funding or while on the way to funding. In many of my college speaker events, I discuss how the best music business plans are laid out with the goals in the short and long term. These plans show the goal planning that can occur when an artist is looking for funding and before any kind of money has come in. These steps include the grassroots marketing organization, content creation, early promotion channel creation and the tracking methods to show potential investors how you are making this happen on your own. A music business plan is so much more than just trying to get a large budget that covers all costs. A music business plan created effectively can give the artist a blueprint to build off of and work toward. This plan might be used to solicit to investors, it could be applied to a label that the artist ends up signing with, and most importantly, it gives the artist a solid plan that has laid out the goal planning with and without funding. It gives the artist the direction to continue to move forward and address every step that needs to be addressed. Lastly, with an artist working off of their specific plan, they may, in the end, be able to save money as they work to cover certain things that may have been allocated for in the plan. This, in turn, is showing how the artist is being proactive, assertive and showing a drive to make things happen even before a larger scale of support. An artist that shows the determination, the organization, the preparation and the execution of a plan is going to find the support and backing they are looking for, over the artists that sit back and wait for everything to be done and happen for them by someone else. ******************************* For more on Loren’s consulting, coaching, strategy work, books & speaking options as well as where to listen to the podcast, visit: https://lorenweisman.com/ https://waitwhatreallyok.com/ https://facebook.com/lorenweisman74/ https://twitter.com/lorenweisman/ ******************************* Music Business Planning. Mayor's Resignation & Wright Music Studio Goodbye Letter

12:39
MAYOR'S LETTER OF RESIGNATION : Dear members of Council, Town Staff, and residents of Witless Bay, Heather and I have made the decision to move to New Brunswick with our girls in order to be closer to our families. Leaving Witless Bay was a very difficult decision for both of us, but in the end, we agreed that this is what would be best for Évangéline and Amélie. I am therefore resigning from my post as Mayor and councilor of the Town of Witless Bay. I want to congratulate members of Council, Town Staff, and all of the individuals who helped us achieve so much in the past three and a half years. Although the Town of Witless Bay had been incorporated for almost thirty years, the municipality had never developed many key documents. In one short mandate, we managed to create a long list of much-needed guiding documents: • An official Vision Statement • The town’s first comprehensive Bylaws, Policies and Procedures Manual; • A Respectful Workplace Policy; • A Code of Ethics; • Job descriptions for Town Staff; • The Town’s first comprehensive Rules of Order for Public Meetings; • A Regional Emergency Management Plan • A New Business Startup Guide • A Tourism and Business Renewal and Growth Strategy • A Community Profile booklet. • A comprehensive Brand Standards Manual; • Modernized road engineering standards for safer roads; • The Town has just launched the process for the drafting of the 2030 Strategic Plan. These documents are posted online so that residents and stakeholders can access them easily. Since 2013, the Town has also posted all of its work online (including public meeting agendas, minutes, policies, regulations, bylaws, application forms, etc!), and has presented its full financials to the public every month. During the 2013 General Election, I had promised to keep taxes low. We managed to lower the residential mil rate by 11% in our first year, and followed this up with two further reductions in 2015 and 2017. We secured almost 2 million dollars in federal and provincial funding for infrastructure upgrades and managed to increase the value of the municipality’s bottom line by well over one million dollars while also eliminating the Town’s debt. We managed to add almost 30 new businesses to the Town’s roster, we ensured the long-term sustainability of the town and the protection of the Town’s water table & residents’ wells by establishing a 40-acre maximum for future subdivision Crown Land applications, and we protected & preserved a number of Witless Bay’s natural & historical assets. We also managed to develop a new visual identity for the town, including what is undoubtedly the Province’s sleekest municipal logo. What I’m most proud of, however, are the successes earned by the whole community working together. The list of our successes together speaks for itself: • 2016 Communities in Bloom National Award for Outstanding Achievement in Environmental Action • 2016  Five Blooms—Communities in Bloom National Finalist • 2015 Tidy Towns Newfoundland and Labrador Award of Excellence • 2015 Tidy Towns Newfoundland and Labrador Leadership in Environmental Action Award • 2015 Communities in Bloom Special Mention for Conservation Efforts • 2015 Four Blooms—Communities in Bloom National Finalist • 2014 Tidy Towns Newfoundland and Labrador Population Category Winner I want to thank the Town staff for your professionalism and unwavering dedication over the years. It’s entirely true that as councilors and mayors come and go, the Town staff ensure the carrying out of the Town’s business. You have done so consistently and conscientiously. The Town is lucky to have such dedicated employees. Witless Bay really is one of the Crown Jewels of the Avalon – it’s well worth protecting. I have done what I could, and trust that Council will continue grow the town in a sustainable manner with the best interest of the entire community in mind. The Vision Statement that was drafted by residents in 2014 is an inspiring mandate: “We stand united as stewards of rich natural, cultural, and heritage resources to ensure our beautiful town’s continued vitality. We are recognized for an authentic identity and inviting character that makes our community a great place in which to grow & prosper.” I wish you well. Sébastien Després Former Mayor, Town of Witless Bay

Artists Guide to Success - Chap. 1 Video - The Music Industry & You.

https://lorenweisman.com/ https://CWealthC.com/ Artists Guide to Success - Chap. 1 Video - The Music Industry & You from the first edition. A Branding Consultant and College Speaker Video Blog. TAG1st is out of print. TAG2nd - The Artists Guide to Success in the Music Business, Second Edition is an updated, rewritten but still falls into the same themes and message as these videos for the first book. The Artists Guide to Success in the Music Business is available at https://artistsguide.net/ Branding Consultant and College Speaker Loren Weisman talks about the music industry as a whole in the chapter one video. Loren gives a scaled back look of where the industry as a whole has been, where it is and where it is heading. An artist of today looking for success in music has to look at many other elements as well. The state of the music industry is ever changing. Musicians and bands that want to go full-time today into the music industry and chase after that career in music need to maintain an awareness of the past, a pulse of the present and a watchful eye on the trends, traits, and transitions of what is coming in the future. Independent artists need to use a rational mind when looking at success stories and failure stories. The who, what, when, where, why and how needs to be considered before an artist chooses to either copy or avoid an approach. Stay away from the hype or at least dig as much as you can into the full stories of those who have shown positive results and those who have not. The more you look at the trends, the conversions, the results and numbers of others, the better the plan you can have for your self, your music or your group. To achieve a sustainable music career in the music business of today, the biggest picture possible needs to be looked at and that is the overview of chapter one of The Artist's Guide to Success in the Music Business. Your organization, optimization, and implementation of a professional music business plan and strategy will give you the tools and the fuel to achieve. ******************************* Brand Precision Marketing Strategist & Counselor Loren Weisman organizes, optimizes & implements individualized branding, marketing & content plans for start-up and established businesses including professional services, https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23entrepreneurs, artists, entertainers, athletes, authors and investors. ******************************* Hosted by Loren Weisman and distributed across iHeartRadio, “Wait What Really OK” is a Methodical, Comical & Informational Podcast covering the best approaches for business and the arts today. ******************************* Loren is based in Winter Garden, Florida, USA and is available to clients over phone, Skype or in person. ******************************* For more on Loren’s consulting, coaching, strategy work, books & speaking options as well as where to listen to the podcast, visit: https://lorenweisman.com/ https://waitwhatreallyok.com/ https://facebook.com/lorenweisman74/ https://twitter.com/lorenweisman/ ******************************* Artists Guide to Success - Chap. 1 Video - The Music Industry & You

Under budget and overconfident equals trouble in biz plans

01:49
https://lorenweisman.com/ https://CWealthC.com/ Under budget and overconfident equals trouble in biz plans. A Music Business Author and Speaker Video Blog. Many people have the abundance of confidence with the lack of budget when it comes to a successful career plan and an effective music business plan for the music industry. The https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23underbudget, https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23undermarketed, https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23underplanned marketing and promotions, under organized and underprepared for a real release set up for failure. Then add in the overconfident, over cocky and over the top assumptions when it comes to the expenses and revenues of a release secure the plan, the project, the record and the band for disaster. In creating the best music business plan, there is a humility required during the process. The details that need to be covered from every angle and the costs that cant be skipped. Like they say, it is easier to get one hundred thousand from a real investor over only ten thousand and it's not the amount, it's the plan. Most https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23plans that cost a little more are covering a lot more of the details. I love that show shark tank and was watching with a friend who was surprised when all of them turned down a great idea. I agreed with the sharks and it began a little debate. The comparison to a well-designed music business plan and the money this woman was looking for showed in the area of marketing and promotions. She wanted a way too small amount with a way too percentage to an investor with a way too low marketing budget. It was that mindset, not unlike musicians that once it is out there, it will explode in sales. It can be a great idea, it can be a great concept, a great album, a great tour, but if it doesn't have a great music business plan or business plan for the project with an under budget approach and an overconfidence angle, it will more than likely be underwater very quickly. As a music business author and speaker, I go deeper into these ideas in The Artists Guide to Success in the Music Business available at https://artistsguide.net/ ******************************* Brand Precision Marketing Strategist & Counselor Loren Weisman organizes, optimizes & implements individualized branding, marketing & content plans for start-up and established businesses including professional services, https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23entrepreneurs, artists, entertainers, athletes, authors, and investors. ******************************* Hosted by Business Author and Speaker Loren Weisman and distributed across iHeartRadio, “Wait What Really OK” is a Methodical, Comical & Informational Podcast covering the best approaches for business and the arts today. ******************************* Loren is based in Winter Garden, Florida, USA and is available to clients over phone, Skype or in person. ******************************* For more on Loren’s consulting, coaching, strategy work, books & speaking options as well as where to listen to the podcast, visit: https://lorenweisman.com/ https://waitwhatreallyok.com/ https://facebook.com/lorenweisman74/ https://twitter.com/lorenweisman/ ******************************* Under budget and overconfident equals trouble in biz plans.

Richard Branson: Advice for Entrepreneurs

04:04
Don't miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Since Branson founded Virgin in 1970, the company has grown from a small record outlet to a global powerhouse. Can the brand continue its success without him? Question: What is your advice for entrepreneurs? Richard Branson:  I think the most important thing about running a company is to remember all the time what a company is.  A company is simply a group of people. And as a leader of people you have to be a great listener and you have to be a great motivator.  You have to be very good at praising and looking for the best in people.  People are no different from flowers.  If you water flowers they flourish, if you praise people they flourish. And that is a critical attribute of a leader. Question: What has been the most difficult part about running Virgin?Richard Branson:  There is a very thin dividing line between success and failure.  Most people who set off in business without financial backing they fail at some times in their lives. I've only just stayed at the right side of that dividing line.  For instance, just after...  You know we had a record company.  I was fed up flying on other people's airlines.  I felt that the experience of flying on other people's airlines was an unpleasant one and I decided to set up an airline.  Well our bank went into a complete panic attack and when I came back from doing the inaugural flight of Virgin Atlantic's very, very first flight from London to New York I came back to find the bank manager sitting on my doorstep and informing me that they were going to close Virgin down on the Monday and this was the Friday and that I had two days to effectively pay them off the monies that they'd loaned us and I remember pushing the bank manager out of my house, telling him he wasn't welcome, which is a dangerous thing to do to your bank manager and then spending the weekend ringing around the world to all of the distributors of our music asking if they could give us a temporary loan to get us through the following week, which they were good enough to do and by the end of the week we had changed banks and we actually managed to find a bank that was willing to lend us 30 times the overdraft facility that our bank had lent us and we managed to survive. And I think the moral of that story is actually don't think of your bank as somebody that you're beholden to.  I mean don't...  You know people just don't move from one bank to another.  Sometimes you need to be willing to step up and move your banks in the same way that you should step up and move your doctor on occasions and anyway, I learned from that lesson. Question: Can Virgin continue to be successful without you?Richard Branson: Virgin does work very well without me.  I mean I use myself to build the brand, to build the sort of three or four hundred companies around the world, but I also learned the art of delegation.  I have a fantastic team of people who run the Virgin companies, give them a lot of freedom to run the companies as if they were their own companies.  I give them the freedom to make mistakes and the Virgin brand is now maybe one of the top 20 brands in the world, well respected. And when my balloon bursts Virgin will continue to flourish. And maybe I add the icing on the cake on occasions, maybe they'll have to spend a bit more money on marketing, but fortunately Virgin is in a state where it can live on healthily without me. Music business plans and the best questions for soliciting.

01:20
https://lorenweisman.com/ https://CWealthC.com/ Music business plans and the best questions for soliciting. A Branding Speaker and Business Advisor Video Blog. When it comes to soliciting to agents, managers, producer, investors with either your music business plan or the requests you are looking for, make sure you are asking the best questions to get both responses and results. So many, or actually way too many artists half-ass their soliciting when it comes to emails, Facebook messaging, Twitter messaging or whatever else. Be professional, think about what you are looking for and make sure you are not coming off confusing or worse like you are just emailing spam. Simply put when you are #musicmarketing for money, bookings, producers or whatever, it is going to take a direct question that is precise and easy. A bad approach to your #musicbusinessplan of #soliciting is when you are sending short notes saying, "this is the link to my song." So what? Who cares? Do you want me to review it, share it, listen to it, find someone to perform it? Just sending a note like that is foolish and ineffective not to mention unprofessional and not the best way to approach your marketing and promotion techniques to those in or out of the industry. Think about what you want, individualize your request and your approach to the person you are sending it to. Make a core element of your music business plan include a solicitation plan that is going to get responses that will then turn to conversions and answers you are looking for. A common theme I share as a music branding speaker and business advisor is that when you address the who, what, when, where, why and how of what you are looking for and the details of your request, you are going to get a lot more answers than sending short, email spamming notes to everyone with no detail and no care. Ask a question or the questions that will be the first step to getting the answers that you are looking for. Instead of assuming your short message and short link actually, makes that much sense. ******************************* Brand Precision Marketing Strategist & Counselor Loren Weisman organizes, optimizes & implements individualized branding, marketing & content plans for start-up and established businesses including professional services, entrepreneurs, artists, entertainers, athletes, authors and investors. ******************************* Hosted by Branding Speaker and Business Advisor Loren Weisman and distributed across iHeartRadio, “Wait What Really OK” is a Methodical, Comical & Informational Podcast covering the best approaches for business and the arts today. ******************************* Loren is based in Winter Garden, Florida, USA and is available to clients over phone, Skype or in person. ******************************* For more on Loren’s consulting, coaching, strategy work and more about Create Wealth Communities, visit: https://lorenweisman.com/ ******************************* Music business plans and the best questions for soliciting

How to Get Sample Clearance to Use a Sample in a Song?

05:12
► This is a preview lesson from my course "Sample Clearance for Music Artists" Get the complete course for only $15 (92% off the regular price) for a LIMITED time here: https://goo.gl/hH9H92 In order to legally use a sample, you need to get permission from two sources: 1. One from the copyright owner of the song (which is typically the music publisher), and 2. One from the copyright owner of the sound recording (which is typically the record company). The copyright for the song protects your lyrics and melody only and the copyright for the sound recording covers that particular recording of the song. The sound recording copyright usually belongs to whoever pays for the recording. In traditional music business, the sound recording copyright is always owned by the record company. Now days, it's more common to see writers or publishers owning the sound recording because it's easier to self distribute than it used to be and because the sound recording is valuable. So in other words, you need to find and contact and ask permission from both the copyright owner of the underlying musical work and the copyright owner of the sound recording. Then you need to negotiate and come to terms with an agreement for using another artist’s sample in your work. Legal disclaimer: I’m an attorney but I’m not your attorney. Sample Clearance for Music Artists

► This is a preview lesson from my course "Sample Clearance for Music Artists." Get the complete course for only $15 (92% off the regular price) for a LIMITED time here: https://goo.gl/hH9H92 To sample or not to sample? This is the question many a DJ, producer, and songwriter must grapple with on an almost daily basis. Sampling is fun, and in the era of the ubiquitous digital audio workstation, very easy to do. But is it always a clever move from a legal and business perspective? In this course we’ll consider how to go about sampling within the law, how to avoid getting sued, and consider some of the pitfalls of falling foul of copyright law. Sampling music is the act of reusing a portion of another sound recording. Whether unique percussion combinations or distinguishable guitar riffs, many musicians sample other's music. Without obtaining permission from the original musician or owner of the rights to the music, many of these musicians face legal trouble, such as inunctions to not use the sample or even money damages. Obtaining permission for music sampling can be tedious, but will save you from legal action you could face if you sample without permission If you’re a hip hop artist or producer, odds are you either have or will be faced with the issue of using a sample in your music. The biggest problem with this is that most people wait until their music project is completed before they start dealing with the legal aspects associated with clearing those samples. If you plan to use samples in your musical compositions, you may need to get permission to avoid legal trouble. Unfortunately, getting permission is not always easy. Here are some ways an independent artist can obtain sample clearance. The process of getting permission from the owners of the sampled music is referred to as "sample clearance." Failure to get the proper permission could lead to serious consequences: lawsuits or the inability to distribute your music to the public. Many clients ask about whether or not they can "sample" from an existing sound recording and how much is permissible to use, and whether or not they need permission to embody a sample in their new sound recording. Learn the do's and don'ts of sampling in this course. Using someone else’s recording in your music without permission can lead to disaster. We explain the ins and outs of copyright law, and guide you through the process of clearing your samples. The Golden Rule of Licensing: if you don't own or control it, you likely need a license to use it. There are a few exceptions (such as public domain compositions), though the golden rule is a common sense guideline that can help determine when licenses are needed. Startup Business Planning Jigsaw - Donncha Hughes

I was delighted to be invited to speak at GMIT's New Frontiers Entrepreneur Event on the 27th February 2015 on the topic of ‘Lean Startup and Navigating the Funding Scene’. (This 27 minute video is a recording of the practice for that address). In the slides, I use the Startup Business Planning Jigsaw to summarise my thoughts on starting a knowledge based business in Ireland with a particular focus on Lean Startup and the Startup Supports that are available as a business moves from idea to market launch stage and beyond. Hence the subtitle to my address, ‘Strategy Roadmap for Startups and the Supports at each stage’.
