Thriving Bottle Garden Hasn't Been Watered in Over 40 Years

05:39
Read More: http://www.GistOnThis.com David Latimer is one of the world's few proud owners of an entirely self-sustaining bottled garden. Looking at pictures of the lush green bottle, you'd think that growing it involved a lot of hard work. But the truth is that David hasn't even watered it in over 40 years. It's just been sitting under the hallway stairs in his home and it's doing extremely well on its own. The story of his this amazing experiment began in 1960, on Easter Sunday, when David decided that it would be fun to start a bottle garden. Since they were a bit of a craze back then, he wanted to see for himself what the fuss was all about. So out of idle curiosity, he got himself a 10-gallon globular bottle, poured some compost at the bottom and used a piece of wire to carefully lower a seedling in. Then he put in just about a quarter of a pint of water, and believe it or not, he only watered the plant once more in 1972. Never again after that. It has been alive and kicking for the past 54 years. The plant that David placed in the bottle is an indoor variety of perennial spiderworts that also go by the Latin name of Tradescantia. The bottle itself is tightly sealed; David only needs to rotate it around often so it grows evenly towards the light. "Otherwise, it's the definition of low-maintenance," he said. "I've never pruned it, it just seems to have grown to the limits of the bottle." So what makes the spiderwort so special that it can grow with almost no outside help? The secret is really pretty simple -- the plant has been extremely successful at creating its own mini ecosystem. Using the little water that David gave the plant 42 years ago, it has managed to get a water cycle going inside the bottle. The water is taken up by the roots, released into the air through transpiration, condenses down into the potting mixture and the cycle repeats itself. Through the glass, the leaves are able absorb as much light as they need to photosynthesize into energy that helps the plant grow. The oxygen created during photosynthesis also puts enough moisture in the air for it to 'rain' back down on the plant. As the leaves age, they drop to the bottom and rot, helping to create carbon dioxide (also needed for photosynthesis) and nutrients that are absorbed by the roots. At night, when there is no sunlight, the plant breaks down nutrients and uses cellular respiration to stay alive. The bottle has lived for 27 years in the same spot in David's retirement home in Cranleigh, Surrey. He took a photograph of it to a BBC radio show called 'Gardener's Question Time', to check with the experts if the plant was of any horticultural interest. And that's when it gained the media's attention. According to garden designer and television presenter Chris Beardshaw, "It's a great example of the way in which a plant is able to recycle, it's the perfect cycle of life." Beardshaw pointed out that this process was one of the reasons for NASA's interest in taking plants into space. "Plants operate as very good scrubbers, taking out pollutants in the air, so that a space station can effectively become self-sustaining. This is a great example of just how pioneering plants are and how they will persist given the opportunity," he said. But not everyone is enthusiastic about bottle gardens. Like organic gardener Bob Flowerdew, who said: "It's wonderful but not for me, thanks. I can't see the point. I can't smell it, I can't eat it." David has no choice but to agree with Bob. David did say that the bottle is incredibly dull and doesn't really do anything, but he's still excited to see just how long it will last. He hopes to pass it on to his future generations, and if they aren't interested, to the Royal Horticultural Society. David's bottle garden is essentially one of the best examples of nature's recycling process. And the wonderful part is that it should work with almost any plant, not just spiderworts. All you need to create your own is a large glass container with a wide neck and some good quality potting compost, deep enough for the plant to sink in its roots. Introduce very few tiny specimens of the plant of your choice, move them into position with kitchen tongs, water them ever-so-lightly, seal the jar, and place it in a well-lit spot. That's about it -- you've got yourself a beautiful bottle garden that will thrive for years to come.

Landscaping Ideas for Small Sunny Spot

03:59
Hi, I'm David with Smartscapes, LLC here in Nashville, Tennessee, and we're here talking today about landscapes in small sunny spots. When I think about small sunny spots, I think about patios and little accent areas that are scattered throughout a person's landscape. So, I'm going to start off with a sunny spot. We've got a fern over here. This fern will do great in a pot, full sun, hit it hard. It doesn't need a whole lot of water, it does a great job with it and then that moves us to our pots over here that we're going to have our herbs in. I like to call this our container gardens and this is something that we do for families that are really kind of into cooking, maybe a little organically and want to grow their own herbs and we actually throw tomatoes in them and parsley and it provides a nice look and accessibility the herbs for fresh cooking. Now again we're in the early Spring, so we're still with pansies in our landscape over in through here. We love to give a splash of annual color to the areas that need it, kind of the areas that you want to draw a little attention to and maybe a small area like this. We will be updating these pansies here in the next month or so, probably two weeks to a month, something like that. Another thing that does real well in a landscape in small sunny areas is Mondo Grass and here you'll find some of the Mondo Grass we have planted in through here. It makes a nice ground cover. Over a period of time it packs in real dense and then also there's some Dianthus back behind it to give it some color. Now what you're finding in this particular landscape is a combination of things that gives you texture, style, color and it works out great. Alright, over here we have another small sunny area. Unfortunately the sun hasn't quite reached it yet but back here we hid a pot back behind these Spirea that we have basil and we have tomatoes and this thyme that was in there, it came back from last year which we're thankful for but that's one great area to do a small sunny landscape but we incorporated the Spirea, the Barberry and the Yews back altogether to be able to give you that texture, that feel, that different contrast in colors and looks. Over here you'll find that we have a mixture of several different things. Like I said, we're making it fun for the kids. We have some ground covering through here. We incorporated the rocks. Sometimes, rocks are a nice little, nice little additive to a landscape but you'll find strawberries and mint and there's blueberries, grapes over on the back of the wall and the mint, you've got to love it but it scatters all over the place. So, you see it all over the place. Also, if you'll notice there's a little brown pipe sticking up out of the pine needles over there. We went ahead and incorporated our irrigation in on this area as well to be able to give a better fruit and a longer productivity. The last thing we're going to cover on small sunny spots is perennials. For example, right here these are Stella De Oro Daylilies and they do a great job, take full sun, they'll bloom all season long and they have great color with minimal maintenance. So be sure and check out what perennials you have available in your area. Again, this is David with Smartscapes, LLC. Turn Your Deck or Patio into a Gardening Oasis! - Episode 1 #containergardening

00:55
itsgardeningtime.com When you go outside to enjoy the weather and all that nature has to offer, turn your plain deck or patio into a gardening oasis! A deck or patio garden is simply containers of your favorite plants strategically placed around the deck or patio. If the plant likes full sun, like our Red Geranium, find a sunny spot on the deck or patio, which receives 6 or more hours of sun per day. If the plant likes partial sun, like our Salmon Geraniums, find a location that receives a few hours of sun, but is shielded from the hot afternoon sun. If the plan likes a shady location, place it in a location where the sun is blocked by an object such as a chair, bench, table, or other plants/containers. Simple and Easy Landscaping Ideas

01:45
► http://homelandscapingdesigns.aedvz.com ◄◄ THE MOST AWESOME COLLECTION OF LANDSCAPING IDEAS & DESIGNS THAT EXISTS!!! Simple and Easy Landscaping Ideas One of the biggest concerns that most family's face when deciding how to design their existing landscape is "where do I start?" If you aren't a creative person or can't afford a professional consultant to design your landscaping plans, what do you do? Most people are looking for a few simple and easy landscaping ideas that they can follow and do the work themselves. I have had several friends and neighbors ask me for my advice and guidance so they can get started with their landscaping plans. One of the first thoughts is to spend some time evaluating your current piece of property with particular emphasis on what do you want your completed landscaping project to look like. Don't try to copy your neighbors design! For example, they don't have any children and you do. They don't need a play area and you do. Therefore, it is important to know what you are starting with such as the existing layout and the primary features of your current yard. Does your lawn take up most of the property? What type of trees and where are they located on the property? Is the property level and easy to work with or are you faced with gully's and rocky soil? Once you determine the pros and cons of what you starting with, then you can sketch out a rough design and come up with a feasible budget. Now that you have an understanding of your terrain and landscape your need to whether to include a vegetable garden within the overall landscaping plan. A vegetable garden is not as aesthetic as a flower garden, however, sometimes it is easier to landscape. If you are only planting a flower garden, then you will want to keep the plants and flowers with a certain color scheme such as a combination of vivid yellows and reds. Although selecting plant colors is a personal decision, blending certain colors will give you a more beautiful and coordinated appearance. Don't overlook the importance of the need for direct sunlight for your plants. Some flowers require direct sunlight whereby other plants need a certain amount of shade. Determine the amount of shade a specific area of the yard receives, and if it is in direct sunlight, how to create shade for flowers and vegetables that grow the best in indirect sunlight. You can do this by planting them in the shadow of certain larger plants, shrubs or trees. One of the easiest ways to create artificial shade is to plant vines on a trellis or fence. You will now decide on how many and what types of trees to include in you landscape design. A single tree or a small group of trees can be a nice arrangement within the lawn or a pleasing side feature or you may decide to place or keep them in the background. Do not choose an overpowering tree. Select one with a nice shape with an interesting feature about its colorful leaves, distinctive bark, or colorful flowers. You may want to consider the blossoms of the tulip tree, the bright berries of the ash, the bark of the white birch, the leaves of the copper beech or the brilliant foliage of the sugar maple. If you have a low area that stays wet most of the time, the willow or birch are ideal trees for this spot. Do not plant a group of evergreen trees next to the house, this generally gives a dark and gloomy effect to the house. There are a variety of shrubs that can be used as hedges and are more pleasing in a landscape design than building expensive fences. The following shrubs make very nice and colorful hedges: California privet, Japan barberry, Van Houtte's spirea and the Osage orange. When choosing your trees and shrubs, select those of your local geographical area since they will be better suited for the climate and soil conditions. Your house or tool shed often needs the help of vines or certain types of flowers to tie it together to create a harmonious landscape. Landscape architects use vines to accomplish this purpose. Plant a perennial vine and it will develop into a permanent part of your landscape design. There are several alternatives that you can choose from such as Virginia creeper, clematis, honeysuckle, wisteria or trumpet vine. Walkways and pathways are essential for all landscaping designs, since they allow you as well as your guests, to walk through the garden without harming the plants and flowers. A variety of materials are used to create walkways such as gravel, pavers, brick or bark. Depending upon your style of garden, try to design your paths to curve and meander throughout your garden rather than in a straight line. Keep in mind, the path should lead somewhere; for example, starting from your back porch or deck and ending at your tool shed or property line.

Bury An Egg In Your Garden Soil, What Happens Few Days Later Will Surprise You

03:24
Good soil means everything for a gardener looking to raise healthy, happy plants. While there are certainly countless chemicals and egg expensive solutions, there are actually many simple things you can do to boost nutrients and maintain a successful garden. Curious to learn more? In this video I’ll show you 6 ways to make any type of soil enrich with nutrients naturally after which you’ll never feel the need to buy those expensive chemical fertilizers. 1. Raw Egg The solution for a thriving plant may be as simple as planting a raw egg. As you prepare your pots with soil, simply include a single raw egg at the bottom. Over time, the egg will decompose and works as a natural fertilizer for the seedlings.  You can also use crushed eggshells which work just as good as whole egg. Eggshell has calcium, nitrogen and phosphoric acid which make them an ideal choice for garden use. So next time you boil or fry an egg don’t throw away the egg shell but instead Recycle them to grow seedlings. When the seedling is ready to be planted outside, place the shell and seedling directly in the ground. The eggshell will decompose over time and help fertilize the soil. 2. Banana Skins Bananas contain a number of nutrients including potassium, phosphate, sulfur, calcium, magnesium and sodium. All of these things can help promote healthy growing for plants. best way to effectively use banana peels is to cut them up into small pieces so that they can decompose faster. This will result in organic matter that helps establish rich soil 3. Ash If you have a fireplace, you'll love this free method for raising pH levels.   you simply scatter the ash around the soil as a way to lower acidic levels. This will make it easier to grow a fresh crop. 4. Leaves Allowing leaves to rot over a garden during winter will provide nutrients for the soil to prepare it for the next growing season. The leaves work to pull the organic matter back down into the soil making it dark and rich.  5. Epsom Salt Epsom salts are especially good for soil. Low pH levels are usually an indication of a magnesium imbalance. To boost pH levels in the soil, dilute Epsom salt with water and spray on the plants. The vegetation will soak up the welcomed nutrients.   6.Use Compost Regularly While using bits and pieces of natural matter can be helpful, combining many pieces of compost will only go one step further toward enriching your soil. There are a number of benefits of using natural compost regularly  it works to improve the soil structure while using less water and warding off common plant diseases. The soil benefits from added layers of nutrients, especially before a growing season.  Now if you liked the video give it a thumbs up and if this is your first time visiting my channel please subscribe for more videos. Growing Land Moss in Aquarium

04:03
There are many types of moss growing on streets and in parks of New York. Here is an example of Bryum moss (please correct me if I am wrong). I am taking samples. Moss doesn't have roots. Check out my other videos about growing land plants underwater (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOahoXca864&list=PLM88hGt0AfGso8J51QCu-TSk4hnPpft43). Important! Wash moss until it is clean under running water. Soak moss in water for a day or a week. This moss absorbs a huge amount of water and yields an unbelievable amount of oxygen! Here is a closeup view. April 25th, 2017 I am setting up a new nursery aquarium for this example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lig8FRbunA8&list=PLM88hGt0AfGu6ebQ8bSkZyYB2BFBuqkcK). Use scissors to cut a semicircular strip of moss. Cover the bottom of an aquarium with gravel. Place strips of moss along the walls of the aquarium. Push moss down into the gravel. I made it look like a ring from the bird's eye-view. Add more gravel in the center, filling up the middle space. The moss strips are held down by the walls and by the gravel on the inner side of the ring. Add dechlorinated water. The moss stays in place! We have made the nursery. Let the moss stay and grow in it. May 14th, 2017 I planted a water lily in the middle and added little critters and snails. June 13th, 2017 The moss grew noticeably in the first month! July 19th, 2017 I added newborn guppies to the aquarium. This moss grows underwater up to the surface at an incredible rate, creating a green wall. It looks like a fence. This is another example of this moss in a different nursery. This moss likes direct sunlight. And so do little critters! You can see oxygen bubbles. Be mindful of direct sunlight rapidly overheating aquariums and making it dangerous for fish! I use only indirect sunlight for all aquariums containing fish. July 31st, 2017 My guppies love this moss. It looks nice and grows fast, benefiting aquariums in many ways. And it grows everywhere! I want to see if it grows underwater all year around ;) Have fun and happy plants :) Blog: http://rndmbits.blogspot.com/2017/08/growing-land-moss-in-aquarium.html More fun on my website www.fewdoit.com Views as Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03hgIT4HTiE

To witnesses on the ground, he looked like a god, and he felt like one too. But, in his society, the line that separated god from man was absolute, and the punishment for mortals who attempted to cross it was severe. Amy Adkins explains the myth of Icarus and Daedalus. Architecture Short Course: How to Develop a Design Concept

19:24
All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Creative Vegetable Garden Plans

02:41
You may be so excited about starting a vegetable garden that you are tempted to just jump in without making your vegetable garden plans first. The problem is, if you don't have your research and planning completed first, your garden will not be able to thrive to its full potential. If you want to make the most of your garden use the following vegetable garden planning tips. 1- Make your garden on paper first. Resist the temptation to simply buy vegetable seeds and toss them into your garden space. You need to design it out first. Each plant you choose will have different needs and requirements, make sure you give each plant the light and space it needs to mature. Also consider the colors the vegetable plants will be and color coordinate as desired. 2- Don't just picture your vegetable plants as seedlings, consider how they will look and fit into your garden when they are fully grown. Always plan with the end in mind, how will these look when they are big? If you don't leave enough space between each of your veggies they will compete with each other for soil nutrients and sunlight. This will cause some of your plants to wither and die. 3- If you also plan to plant some trees in your yard, place the taller ones to the north of your garden. It is also best if you plant your tall plants on the north side of your garden. An example of tall vegetable plants would be corn and tomatoes. Why? This is to prevent them from casting shadows on the shorter plants as they grow. Keeping shorter plants to the south will give them the best sun access. 4- Don't just put your seeds in the dirt, prepare your soil first. Your soil is one of the most important aspects of your garden. If you skimp on high quality soil, your garden will not do well. Get your natural soil tested to see if you can grow good veggies there. You cannot always tell the quality of soil just by looking at it. If you skip the soil your garden will most likely fail. 5- Sunlight is an indispensable part of your garden growth and longevity. Just like your soil, without proper sunlight your plants will die. Having vegetable garden plans that give too much shade can be disastrous. 6- Instead of just having one harvest time, consider having vegetables that peak throughout the year. If you have a large variety of different veggies that grow during different months of the year you'll be able to eat healthy fresh vegetables all year-round. Try some varieties you've not grown in the past. If you take your vegetable garden planning seriously and draw up your plans from the start you'll have a huge success. Use these vegetable garden plans to get started. Make sure to do your research and treat your plants well. You will reap delicious benefits in no time.
