Cancer cure: Scientists use light to help T-cells track down and kill cancer cells - TomoNews

08:15
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK — Mobilizing a patient’s immune system to eradicate cancer is often hit or miss, but a group of researchers have discovered that light and optics might help. Killer T-cells act as the body’s defense, but are often evaded by cancer cells and kept out of areas surrounding aggressive tumors. To help them track down their target, scientists from the University of Rochester Medical Center combined the T-cells with a light-sensitive algae molecule. A press release from the center reports that when injected into mice and activated with light, the T-cells were better able to kill the cancer cells. In a separate project, mice with melanoma on their ears were implanted with an LED chip and made to wear a small battery pack. The battery signalled the LED to shine light on the tumor, calling killer T-cells to the scene and boosting their cancer-killing function. The non-toxic treatment is promising, but the researchers are still determining how effective it is on tumors deep in the body. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Referring cancer patients to exercise professionals

00:38
Karen Mustian, PhD, MPH, ACSM of the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, New York, NY highlights the importance of exercise in cancer care. Dr Mustian believes that as an oncologist, it is especially important to discuss exercise with cancer patients, ensuring that they are aware of what their toxicities and side effects are, and what exercise might help with. Since their clinics may be really busy, and treatment of the disease is the prime focus, oncologists should be aware of the exercise professionals around the community, and make a referral as they would for any other specialty medical need for other patients. Recorded at the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO) 2016 Annual Meeting on Supportive Care in Cancer held in Adelaide, Australia.

Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: New Perspectives From the Bedside to the Bench

01:29
Charles L. Loprinzi, MD Division of Medical Oncology Mayo Clinic Cancer Center Rochester, MN Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a significant, debilitating complication of chemotherapy administration for cancer. The chemotherapeutic agents most often associated with CIPN are platinum drugs (carboplatin, cisplatin, and oxaliplatin), taxanes (paclitaxel and docetaxel), vinca alkaloids (vincristine and vinblastine), and epothilones. Because these agents are used to treat several types of cancer, CIPN is common, affecting up to 30%-40% of chemotherapy-treated patients. The symptoms of CIPN, including numbness, tingling, and burning, typically occur in the "glove and stocking" distribution seen in other neuropathies. Paclitaxel-associated acute pain syndrome is a variant of CIPN that usually appears 1-2 days following treatment and resolves within a week. Most attempts to prevent CIPN have not proven effective, although intravenous infusion of calcium and magnesium before and after oxaliplatin administration has produced promising initial results without inhibiting the anticancer effects of the platinum drug. Additionally, despite presumed similarities with other neuropathic pain syndromes, little clinical trial evidence of efficacy has been noted when treating CIPN with centrally acting analgesics. Here, Dr. Loprinzi discusses the current avenues of research into the prevention and treatment of CIPN.
