Hey Guys, This is my Day 2 of no coffeine! I also discuss how caffeine can cause or affect high blood pressure. First off, today went pretty good. Got off work early so wasnt tempted to drink soda. Me and my wife grabbed some breakfast burritos and came home to relax. Was a little uncomfortable because I would usually have my 2 cups of coffee with my breakfast while watching my morning sports shows, but i got through it ok. One of the effects of caffeine is that it can have an impact on your blood pressure. If you are a daily caffeine consumer, then it wont raise your blood pressure significantly. This generally happens to those who rarely drink caffeinated drinks like coffee, energy drinks, soda, or energy shots. If you already suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension, have had a heart attack or stroke, or suffer from another type of heart disease, then limiting or cutting caffeine out of your like all together might be the best option. Even a small raise in blood pressure can cause problems for someone who has hypertension. How To Reduce Blood Pressure | How To Prevent Blood Pressure | How To Lower High Blood Pressure | Lifestyle | Diet Hey, guys! This weeks video is about high blood pressure and how you can prevent getting it with simple yet effective lifestyle changes. Healthcare professionals refer to high blood pressure as the silent killer and for a good reason! High blood pressure increases risks of many diseases and shortens your life significantly. WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as two figures: Systolic pressure – The pressure when your heart pushes blood out. Diastolic pressure – The pressure when your heart rests between beats. As a general guide: High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home) Ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg Low blood pressure is considered to be 90/60mmHg or lower. A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don't take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. HOW TO PREVENT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: High blood pressure can often be prevented or reduced by eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol in moderation and not smoking. SALT & DIET: Cut down on the amount of salt in your food and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. The NHS Eatwell Guide highlights the different types of food that make up our diet, and shows the proportions we should eat them in to have a well-balanced and healthy diet. Salt raises your blood pressure. The more salt you eat, the higher your blood pressure. Aim to eat less than 6g (0.2oz) of salt a day, which is about a teaspoonful. The Mayo Clinic says you should test your blood pressure 30 minutes after drinking a beverage containing caffeine, to find out whether it had an effect. “Caffeine can cause a short, but dramatic increase in your blood pressure, even if you don’t have high blood pressure,” said the Mayo Clinic online. “It’s unclear what causes this spike in blood pressure, but it can raise levels by up to 10 mmHg.” “However, if you drink coffee regularly you may experience little or no effect on your blood pressure from caffeine.” The Mayo Clinic says that if your blood pressure has been raised by five to 10 mmHg after drinking caffeine, you may be sensitive to its blood pressure raising effects. “Talk to your doctor about the effects of caffeine on your blood pressure,” they added. Although drinking caffeine-laden drinks can raise your blood pressure, this is only temporary and is unlikely to cause long term problems. The NHS said online if you want to reduce your BP reading, you should “cut down on caffeine”. “Drinking more than four cups of coffee a day may increase your blood pressure,” said the national healthcare provider. “If you’re a big fan of coffee, tea or other caffeine-rich drinks, such as cola and some energy drinks, consider cutting down. “It’s fine to drink tea and coffee as part of a balanced diet. “However, it’s important that these drinks are not your main or only source of fluid.” There is evidence caffeine may block hormones which widen arteries and causes more adrenaline to be released, both of which can an increase in your blood pressure. Caffeine is found in several drinks including coffee, tea and fizzy beverages. Cutting the substance out of your diet could help lower your blood pressure. So it's not completely caffeine free. There are many safe ways to remove caffeine from raw coffee beans. Most of them include water, organic solvents or carbon dioxide. This process leaves the nutritional value of decaf similar to regular coffee, apart from the caffeine content. So there's no issues with the caffeine removal process itself, but how does the end product compare to the health benefits of regular coffee? Regular coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in the Western diet, more than we get from fruits and vegetables combined. Antioxidants are molecules thought to help protect against numerous lifestyle diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. But otherwise decaf coffee is still a great choice if you are sensitive to caffeine or have a medical condition that will benefit from a caffeine-restricted diet. It's perfectly safe and carries most of the same benefits as regular coffee, just without the caffeine side effects. To start off, I just want to say that I absolutely love caffeine you guys. I love drinking coffee. Caffeine is a stimulant and the world’s most popular psychoactive drug, used to help people stay mentally alert. It works by blocking adenosine (a neurotransmitter that plays a role in sleep), which prevents drowsiness. Caffeine also stimulates the heart, muscles, and blood pressure control centers. That is why I limit my coffee consumption to just 3 days per week. I only drink coffee on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Okay well sometimes all drink it on Friday. LOL. I love coffee you guys. But I wont drink it 7 days a well. A common myth of caffeine is that it causes dehydration. This has been proven by studies that this a myth and does not cause dehydration. I have included the study in the description box for you guys. Let’s find out how much caffeine a day is healthy. Up to 400 mg of caffeine a day is safe for most healthy adults. That's the amount of caffeine in four cups of coffee, 10 cans of coke a cola or two "energy shot" drinks. An 8 oz of coffee can have anywhere from 95 to 200mg of caffeine. Insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, and increase rate are all symptoms of having too much caffeine. Chest pains and vomiting are severe symptoms and you should call the position control centre pronto. You will have a caffeine overdoes if you have over 400mg a day, everyone is going to be different though. Some people may experience these symptoms with less than 400mg a day. So just be careful with the amount of caffeine you are taking in per day. So how can we get rid of it from our body? Caffeine is fat-soluble, which helps it move through your body fast. Once you are feeling the ill effects of caffeine, it's already too late for water to help you. That’s not to say water won’t help at all, it definitely will. A study has shown that a way to come back down off of your caffeine high is to eat a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc.) this increased the CYP1A2 enzyme. In the description box I have put a link to a study on CYP1A2 and caffeine, it’s a good read. The only issue with eating Brussel sprouts and broccoli after you have had your caffeine offer does, is that our digestive system doesn’t work as quickly as we would like to think. For the body to actually break down the foods, its going to take around 8 hours or so, for us to actually get the enzymes we need. By that time the caffeine high will be done. The best way to get rid of the caffeine in your body is to drink water and eat vegetables, but just understand time is ultimately the best factor, just like in drinking alcohol.
