DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — Meat-lovers across the U.S. are suddenly finding themselves allergic to meat, all thanks to a pesky little bloodsucker. A bite from the Lone Star tick activates an allergy to the carbohydrate alpha-gal, and causes the body to overproduce the immunoglobulin E antibodies, according to a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Alpha-gal is found in the cell membranes of most mammals, except primates and humans. It isn’t in poultry or seafood, but is abundant in pork, mutton, and beef. Consequently, those who have been bitten become highly sensitive to meat. Eating red meat triggers a reaction that manifests hours later, with symptoms ranging from itching and hives to stomach cramps, pain, and even anaphylaxis. The meat allergy used to be limited to states in the southeastern U.S., but rising temperatures have caused ticks to spread north and west. Scientists have yet to figure out how exactly how the tick sends antibody production into overdrive, but suspect it may be something in the insect’s saliva. While the allergy currently has no known cure, the symptoms may recede over time. For now, it’s best to just double up on the bug spray and hope to the meat gods you don’t get bitten. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Red meat allergy transmitted by lone star ticks on the rise: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/red-meat-allergy-transmitted-by-lone-star-ticks-on-the-rise/. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbE5Qqp8QzWYH234U2VZ27g?sub_confirmation=1 A mysterious and rare condition transmitted by ticks may be on the rise. A bite from the lone star tick can cause people to develop a red meat allergy, and in some cases a reaction to dairy products. A researcher from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discovered more than 5,000 cases were reported in the country. That's up from 3,500 two years ago. On "CBS This Morning" Thursday, Dr. Tara Narula said medical experts have just begun to understand the condition within the last decade. "In some cases it could be [permanent]," Dr. Narula said, "But in most cases we think it will dissipate over time, usually within a couple years. But if you get tick bites again, it's going to make the condition take longer to go away." Essentially the meat allergy is an allergy to the alpha-gal carbohydrate that's found in cows, pigs, sheep and other non-primates, but not humans. Researchers theorize that If a tick bites an animal with the alpha-gal carbohydrate and then bites a human, it injects the carbohydrate into the person's bloodstream. The human body then mounts an antibody response that can activate after consuming red meat. The lone star tick is found in much of the eastern U.S., but is most common in the South. Some reports show the ticks are spreading to new areas as temperatures climb. Symptoms of the meat allergy include hives, skin rash, stomach problems, headaches and trouble breathing. There is no treatment or cure other than avoiding red meat.Study confirms this method of repelling ticks really does work Female lone star ticks have a white spot on their back while males have spots or streaks around the edge of the body, but those characteristics are nearly imperceptible to the eye. "The important thing is to do tick checks," Narula said. "When you come in from the outdoors, take a shower, put your clothes in the dryer on high-heat for ten minutes, avoid high grassy areas, stay on trails and treat your dogs." #Red, #meat, #allergy, #transmitted, #lone, #star, #ticks, #rise #lonestartick, #lymedisease, #cbsthismorning, #health, #tick

I think we need to understand the immune system here and help you understand exactly what is happening inside your body when you have an allergic response to something versus an intolerance that might trigger some inflammation later on down the line. This is all very important stuff. Whether you're doing a ketogenic diet, whether you're fasting, or whether you're just trying to live a healthy lifestyle, understanding how the immune system works when it comes down to our response to food is going to make your life a lot easier, but it's also some pretty fun information in the first place. Hey, if you haven't already, make sure you subscribe to my channel posting anywhere from three to seven videos a week, all kinds of crazy stuff, stuff when it comes down to keto, when it comes down to fasting, when it comes down to just general health. Also make sure you turn on notifications. All right. Let's get into the fun stuff. The first thing that I really want to talk about is a food allergy and what happens inside your body. Okay? A food allergy is a reaction that begins with a food shortly after eating it. You've probably heard of a food allergy before and you know what ends up happening. You might get them in the way of hives, you might get them in the way of maybe some rashes, or maybe you end up having to run to the bathroom or you end up getting some bloating. You know if you have a reaction to a food. You've probably experienced it before. Now that's the simplicity of it, but let's talk a little bit more about what's actually happening. You see, at the very, very root of it, when you have an allergy, it's just a simple substance that is harmless that your body is responding to as if it was a harmful foreign invader. Basically, your body sees a food come in and it thinks that it's bad, so it triggers a reaction, but there's a pretty interesting process that occurs when it comes down to that. You see, that response that actually happens with that food is coming from something known as IgE. It's a specific kind of protein, and we're going to talk about these all in a second. They're called immunoglobulins. Now in this particular case, this IgE protein attaches itself to the foreign invader, in this case, the harmless food that is labeled as a foreign invader. The IgE protein attaches itself to the foreign invader, and then from there it triggers multiple chemical responses, one of which is usually histamine. Now if you've ever taken an antihistamine before, this is what you're fighting. You're not fighting the IgE response. You're fighting the histamine response. So here's what's interesting. If you have allergies to multiple different foods, a lot of times you might find the reactions are similar amongst all those foods. Let's say, for example, you're allergic to shellfish and you're allergic to peanuts. You might find that if you eat shellfish, you end up with your throat closing up. Well, you might find that if you eat peanuts, you end up having the same kind of reaction, and that's simply because your reaction is to the histamine. It's not really to the food. There's a deeper problem going on where your body tends to recognize the shellfish or the peanuts as a foreign invader, triggering this already built-in mechanism that's causing your throat to close up. Psoriasis is condition that affects the skin. It could cause irritation and dry patches on skin. The patches could appear red and scaly. This condition is caused by a response of the body's immune system. The patches are mainly seen in areas like knees, elbows and scalp. The patches turn dry and may cause irritation. Flakiness, peeling of the skin, rashes, cracks and even pain are certain other effects of psoriasis. It is better to avoid alcohol, stress, smoking and too much of sunlight exposure if you have psoriasis. Also, avoid the following foods. 1. Fried Foods Certain fried foods could increase inflammation in the body and could raise the risk of developing psoriasis symptoms. Therefore, either avoid them or reduce your intake if you have psoriasis. 2. Dairy Certain compounds present in dairy could also worsen inflammation and therefore, may trigger psoriasis. 3. Sugar Dextrose, fructose, corn syrup, maltose, honey and various other types of sugars could aggravate the symptoms of psoriasis. Try to avoid cakes, beverages, candy, sweets and other items or drinks that contain sugar. 4. Citrus Fruits Certain citrus fruits like lemons and oranges may cause allergic reactions. Remove them from your diet if you have psoriasis. 5. Red Meat Even red meat could aggravate the symptoms. Avoid processed meat too. 6. Alcohol Alcohol can dry up your skin and it could also aggravate the symptoms of this skin condition. 7. Gluten Barley, rye, wheat and other grains that contain gluten are to be avoided as they may trigger psoriasis symptoms. 8. Yeast Foods that involve yeast and fermentation may also worsen the symptoms. Pizzas, burgers, breads and other foods which contain yeast are to be avoided. Video URL : https://youtu.be/BLsyRyJBwMM

While the idea of biting into a juicy hamburger would make anyone's mouth water, this mother has been struggling ever since a tick bite left her allergic to meat. Janine Baumiller, who is a mother of two from Suffolk County, Long Island in New York, was left with the allergy after she was bitten by a Lone Star Tick. The specific breed of ticks is distinguished by a white spot on their back. One bite from the arachnid will leave you with an allergic reaction that will cause welts to emerge on the skin. "I was having hives. Burning hands, chest breaking out in hives everywhere," she told Inside Edition. "I went to the ER." Lone Star Ticks first started popping up in the Southeast, but they've been making their way up the East Coast. Doctors say thousands of people have been diagnosed with red meat allergies due to the ticks. Dr. Erin McGintee, an allergist on Long Island, N.Y., told Inside Edition how meat causes the reaction after a bite. "People take a bit of a burger and feel fine until hours later and they start having the allergic reaction," she says meat allergy symptoms don't always show up immediately. "It often happens in the middle of the night for people, which is extra scary," she added. For red meat lovers like Baumiller, the tiny bug forced her to make a big change in her diet — now it's all chicken and veggies. Anytime you're outdoors, wear bug repellent that contains DEET, long pants tucked into your socks and always check for ticks when you return home after being out in the woods or long grass. We demonstrate the removal of a Lone Star tick as well as discuss the STARI and Alpha-Gal Syndromes. Southern Tick Associated Rash Illness is very similar to the Lyme disease rash, erythema migrans. It also presents with systemic symptoms of muscle pain, fatigue and headache. STARI appears to resolve with antibiotic treatment, but the agent causing the symptoms has never been discovered. The Alpha-Gal syndrome is an IgE mediated allergy to red meat that is caused by bites of the Lone Star Tick. Anaphylaxis can result in an immediate and delayed form.

A bite from the lone star tick, so-called for the white spot on its back, looks innocent enough. But University of Virginia researchers say saliva that sneaks into the tiny wound may trigger an allergic reaction to meat -- agonizing enough to convert lifelong carnivores into wary vegetarians. Three years ago I was misdiagnosed with chicken pox, which turned out to be alpha-gal syndrome. This means any "red" meat such as pork, veal, goat, lamb, or beef can have deadly consequences if ingested. Symptoms do not appear for several hours after a meal, and can include itching, hives, swollen throat, and possible anaphylactic shock.
